Happy Weekend!
Happy Saturday- liking the look of Shadow Games
Is John’s illness eyesight related?
Are You think he has been messing with his tool too much ????
Possibly
It’s the Weekend!
It’s official. I CAN control myself and not back every KS that crosses my path!
Even though I love Malifaux, something about the Other Side didn’t rock my boat. Now I Love the look of some of the SMOG: RoM models, but … I dunno… Aren’t you also meant to like and play the game?
How you haven’t spotted Medioevo Universalis yet I don’t know, but maybe that’s better in XLBS, guess we’ll find out tomorrow!
Warren -Search as I might, on my table’s youTube I can’t find your Song to ‘ding’, but I was able to stick my thumb up it for you – hope that’satisfied you?
I hate autocorrect with a tucking passion! ( yes I let that one go)
Exodus gets interesting when you look at the evolution of language – one thing i found particularly interesting is that the word that is translated to “the Red Sea” has been suggested as also being translatable to “the Reed Sea”, which would shift the path of the Exodus north to the Nile Delta and areas around the Mediterranean shore where you can still find dense areas of reeds today. Now the waters are not very deep in these areas but if you had a particularly strong tidal surge then the power of water flowing back in would be more than sufficient to swamp chariots.
Also, the matching the ancient Middle East to myth and folklore is utterly fascinating. Factor in changes in climate (during the age of Babylon, Egypt, Urr and the Hittites things would have been positively temperate, especially around the rivers Tigris, Euphrates, Jordan & Nile) and their is a reason these lands are regarded as the birthplaces of (some) civilization…
‘Red’ and ‘Reed’ sound like similar words in English, but it would be quite a coincidence of the the words for these two things sounded similar in whichever language(s) were used back then, would it not?
In Arabic – which is related to Hebrew – the word for red is ‘Ahmar’ while the word for ‘reed’ is ‘Qasab’. (I had to look the last one up, so I can’t be 100% sure that it’s correct.) So they don’t sound anything like each other so it’s hard to believe that a typo or slight mistranslation would see the meanings swapped.
I don’t know what language(s) these texts are that the historians and archeoligists are looking at: they may not be related to the Semitic languages like Arabic and Hebrew at all. But the red / reed theory doesn’t sound as plausible to me as it perhaps does on the surface of things given the sounds of the words in English.
That said, it’s an interesting idea and I don’t pretend to know anything about the research into this subject.
I think I read that they theorised it would have been due to the translation of the written version. It was a good few years ago though so that theory could have been debunked by now….
Every Easter I get out my BBC computer and play Elite for a couple of days
Have you tried the New Version Elite Dangerous on the latest gens of consoles?
I had Elite on my—- I think C64, but it might have been the Amiga. I loved it.
Wow BBC Micro that is a blast from the past..
Did it have anything to do with the Auntie BEEB????
@torros can’t beat a master b elite and repton!
I only had the original one but then we upgraded it to 32k and got a disc drive. Best days
We had a BBC Model B and had Elite… Vector graphics were amazing…I got Elite Dangerous it’s just not the same.
makes me laugh now how in the 80’s we could not get over the blisteriing power of 8bits, and the blistering speed of 950 khz was well blisteringly fast.
Also you could take a tape recorder around a mates listen to electronica dance music for a few hours and take home a copy of every one of his games. Spend a day programming a game in from the latest issue of C+VG and it would not bloody work. Ah great times.
I still think fondly of Cassandra Cardetti and BIgge RED.
Yes, BBC Micro did come from the BBC. My first ever experience with a computer was a BBC Micro with 1K of RAM, playing Elite at junior school. A group of us hadn’t been able to take part in a sports lesson for some reason, so the Maths teacher showed us Elite.
I’ve played Elite Dangerous (it is gorgeous) but my mouse control is really off now, so maybe the RPG might be the way to go for me..
As of my fathers work I grew up all over the world , mostly schooling in developing nations. We never had computers at school . My constant travel companion was my C64 and Commodore crt monitor. I was a star when I took it in to class and showed basic use, game creation, and playing. At the teachers request . We had a computer class on it on most fridays in which at 10- I was the instructor and the teacher was a class mate,
Africa and far east in the 80’s were awesome for an 8 yr old Brit.
Also great way to make friends . Show up in a new country/ area go to a new school and on first day when introduced tell the teacher and class about c64 , and about bringing it in to class at end of week and doing a computer club and how i have done it ( letters from other teachers) before.
@warzan , if you fancy a game that has more than a dash of Elite in it’s dna yet won’t make your pc weep at it’s system specs, can I recommend Independence War 2: Edge of Chaos? I still have fond memories from playing this back in the day. It doesn’t quite have the same scope of Elite, but does have a number of star systems to play around in, with a fairly decent narrative. Bonus points as most of the ships you fly aren’t super-sleek fighters, instead you get tugs and 100 metre-plus corvettes, married to some lovely “real” physics. Plus, it happens to be bloody cheap 😉 https://www.gog.com/game/independence_war_2
(bonus – if you have a spare 15 minutes check out the opening video to the first Independence War game. Still bad ass https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C9AN1hpbw2Y 🙂 )
Elite:Dangerous doesn’t make your pc weep.
Star Citizen does … (if it manages to live up to the hype and get finished that is)
Rebel Galaxy is another alternative : http://rebel-galaxy.com/
It has a bit of that Firefly vibe in the soundtrack.
Happy weekend great show. The wood floor mat is really interesting. You could overlay a sea effect with two cut outs of ships and do a ship to ship game. Please send a get well soon to john I hope he is taking it easy and hasn’t gone home to play with his tool instead.
Happy Weekend!
Oh good grief, Johns Tool, Dinging your dong and the Warren meets mat intro, seriously guys.
Relic Knights look awsome, more content on it please 🙂
Elite Dangerous rpg. Oh no, I’m trying to stay away from KS this year, Help Me!
Great show guys 😀
A new youtube sensation is born, first there was the dubbly do, now we have ding on their dong to show your love. Remember everyone it’s not enough to be subscribed ding on their dong.
Ha ha ha
Bloody Heck Warzan . Well done mate you have lost so much weight, looking great dude. I bet the wife is Happy 😉 😉 😉
I had to watch the Crunking scene a few times before i recognised you.
But be careful loosing weight too fast can be unhealthy, and lead to a rapid regain.
Anyhoots well done Duder. I take my hat of to you sir and offer 3 cheers ; HUSSAR, HUSSAR, HUSSAR .. Keep up the good work and truly well done you are looking very trimmed down. .
Oh I hope Savannah Christmas play went well, you were missed that day in the boot camp. But nothing is worth missing times like that with your Children.
Any way well done and I hope you have your warm orange glowing 2017 mate .
I am just worried that with Trump now being the President of the USA that warm orange glow you sense is from the nuclear bomb explosions, radiation glow and fall out ;-P
Weekend off to a good start again.
Warren, looks like you’re into Mat a little too much in the segment intro.
Use the floor mat for a Walking Dead barn razing (purposefully misspelled). Put some horse stalls and hay piles all over it.
He is married with 3 kids. You have to get your action how and where you can :p
It may be sacrilege but I do have an idea for the lovely deepcut mat you showed us all today. I would cut it up and use it to line the floors of my buildings which don’t have any patterning in them. I have quite a few from the likes of TT Combat and think this would work a treat as their floors and help protect from chipping if the models fall over inside them. With it being such a large mat I think I would have plenty left over for things like walkways, Who knows maybe the combination of laser cut and neoprene is the way ahead for buildings, a sunken floor level to the thinkness of neoprene would allow for a tight fit and a great look.
Dude Neoprene floors ????
its gaming , not studio 54 in New York 1980’s. Ahh !!! Fun Fun times but ouch is glitter painful in the undies
The new Dark Age miniatures are looking fantastic.
Elite (on the Spectrum) and Frontier were awesome. I sunk a lot of hours into those in my youth. Then along came the X series. The chance to build your own space stations and then fly between the struts? Awesome stuff and more hours lost. I’ve been deliberately ignoring Elite Dangerous but I’m now feeling drawn to checking out the minimum spec to see if it will run on my PC…….
I play it on a simple core I3 PC with a 4 generations old nvidia graphics card. You can’t have all the bells and whistle graphi options turned on but it runs fine, even the landing on planets bit with procedural generation.
I Don’t get a lot fo time, like my hobby, but I do have an Asp Explorer spaceship and a space buggy to run around on planets.
This last few weeks saw the first sightings of aliens in the game, and it is, without doubt, the most atmospheric scene in any game I have ever played. They drag you out of hyperspace and disable your entire ship while they scan you.
This guy got it on video.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RCiQndFFQzs
runs great on my Pavillion notebook
Nice show guys, it dinged my dong
@warzan If I were going to use this week’s deep cut mat, I would make a 40k space marine chapter cathedral. Imagine rows of pews and colums. Side rooms of Confessionals and chapels, a rectory. Then using stone walls for the exterior to bring it all in. Maybe a dais at one end for the alter. For something completely odd to use it for, come up with a Pin setter terrain, a ball return, and a way to mark the gutters and lane separators, and you have an entire hard wood bowling alley.
I used to love Frontier, too @warzan!
Memories of making runs between Barnard’s Star and Wolf 359 (or was that the system with the big Borg battle in Star Trek?) in that cool ship with the three nacelles… Ah…. proper space flight physics.
The game box came with a big “flight manual” and novella – you don’t get that these days!
But the music! Wow… that was the game that gave me an interest in classical music: In the Hall of the Mountain King, Great Gates of Kiev, Night on Bare Mountain – ridiculously cool!
The new one is the same, in fact I fitted a docking computer on my ship in Elite Dangerous just so i could listen to the music played again like i did back on my Acorn Electron.
Agreed. As much as I loved playing the game, the music is what has stayed with me all these years later. It still makes me tingly!
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=HbegNmKRZUM
Happy Saturday. I hope that 2 sided mats start to become a trend. They just makeso much sense and you get more for your monies.
The dream mat would be if deepcut did the beach and cobblestone town on a 2 sider.
On the whole exodus thing it sounds like they are hammering the “evidence” to fit their desired outcome
Okay, that mat, you get a tone of tables and chairs, a bar and a piano, now you the inside of a malifaux casino 🙂
Have a great weekend guys! ^^
Weekenders on, all is ok with the universe.
Elite Roleplaying Game! Weeeeeeeeeee!!! I was a massive fan of Frontier (on my Amiga) back in the days, and I do play Eleite Dangerous now, whenever I have the time (and don’t have a paintbrush in my hand instead). I’m so gonna get my greasy hands on this. It’s the best news in like forever.
But first of to Ding the Dongs on all things Bow on Youtube 🙂 Thanks for yet another awesome weekender, and for the chance to win a fun looking game. Looking forward to the play through on monday.
Elite, SimCity 2000 and morrowwind are perhaps the greatest computer games ever made hate to think of the years I’ve invested into them now an elite rpg am seriously excited 😀 😀 😀 😀
Wow, Frontier was a kick-ass game!
Still not used to the opener for Warren Meets Mat… But I like the segment. I have a feeling I’m going to end up getting some of them.
Nice to see a 2 sided mat. Those things cost a lot so its good to see one being more value for money. I hope more companies follow suite.
Oh Ding-Dong chaps!
Fellas, I won’t lie. I was looking forward to seeing John’s tool. The rest of the show is a bit of a second prize. I’ve no doubt it’ll be a great second prize, but it’s still a second prize.
Lack of John’s tool aside great show.
Awesome weekender!
That mat would also work for boardgames like Rumbleslam, because then the board would feel less like a game and more like part of the terrain.
I dinged your dong 😉
How many attempts did it take to shoot that Warren Meets Mat intro? It’s just so smooth.
Hiphop Lance just cracked me up. 🙂
My favorite game is Infinity. How could I use the wooden flooring mat for that?…
Maybe setting a game on Earth in a cultural heritage site. Mix it in with some modernized buildings. The contrast could be interesting…
Ariadna will probably use wood as well. Maybe for an outpost. Or cross over to the other side and use it as the base for and Antipode settlement…
A Yu Jing palace with a lacquered floor.
Yes, I guess even in a hyper-modern game like Infinity there are options for this mat.
For the gaming mat idea. i was thinking the inside of a zepplan. for Woling.
I popped over to YouTube, dinged your dong, and while I was there stuck up my thumb too 😉
I’ve been against mats for a while. I always thought the surface would just look too 2D. But two things are bringing me around:
1. the idea of using them as a surface for dungeon crawlers, placing the walls directly on to the mat.
2. Warren Meets Mat.
Hope @johnlyons gets well soon!
Interesting stuff, I can’t say I would be purchasing that new mat, cool and functional as it might be, I lean so much towards sci fi versus the fantasy realms that I would stick to the war torn fields, or city scapes. That being said, that would make a killer map for a game of Malifaux in a big brewery, not a brew house, but an honest to grog brewery. I would imagine it would look truly epic with huge silos of hops, great vats of yeasty beasties eating away at those sugars for a fantastic treat to guzzle down.
thanks guys, dance mat was awesome.
Like the double sided battle mat, same space but twice the mats. I hope they will make more of these.
I’m not into anime, but I’m a big fan of Relic Knights. The game stands out on its own.
Warren Meets Mat 2: Electric Boogaloo
Let me win…from the shadows
Re the discussion of Exodus. This is what it must be like to be a doctor and have someone explain homeopathy to you…
Lol you old professors are just stuck in your ways 😉
@warzan, mainstream academics make their careers on re-writing what has gone before. If they didn’t there’d be nothing to do.
Great show, again. You guys can bust some unbelievable moves.
I hope that double sided mats become more common place, just makes sense in many ways.
Bonus: you would also get to make another Warren meets map intro along the lines of 2 on 1 action.
Lovely size box that shadow games.
Guys at Beasts of War if you get the double sided mat, could you show it off with bigger scales models e.g. 35mm wwx models? I’m looking for a gaming mat I could use for wwx a long with other systems I play and if it scales well it could work nicely.
Ding Dong the weekend is here!!
With that gaming mat i’d try an make the Grand Archives of the Doctrine for relic knights
I backed the Elite Dangerous: Role-Playing Game — can’t wait to give it a go
Good show guys. My brother was always the Elite player, my preference was Wing Commander! Dare I watch the Relic Knights vids? I’m supposed to be cutting down on unplaced games not getting more!
I have Ding the Dong on my You Tube account so it’s now done , and for the Relic knight games Justin is right Pirate team is pretty cool but my number one is The Black Diamond just cause the mini are so cool but pirate team is my second , so nice choice Justin
Looking forward to the next kingdom Death
I just beat the Butcher then took on a level 2 lion
All survivors died horribly
Hi Guys
Great Show as always. I have been away from tabletop games for a few years. I decided to dip toe back in and re sign to BOW and am amazed how much I have missed. I have loads to catch up on.
Happy weekend all!
Great show guys, looking forward to XLBS tomorrow 🙂
Dong dinged!
I look forward to seeing the demo game of “Shadow Games”. I don’t play Guildball, but the card game might be fun regardless.
You could use the wood-floor mat for Bushido, Ronin, or a Fistful of Kung Fu: a training floor or a teahouse setting, like the scene from Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.
Happy weekend!
That mat is awesome. You could do it up as a theatre with the stage, seating, dressing rooms, entrance and all that. Or a really interesting multi-level museum and have your crews fighting over relics or artifacts; that’d work for AoS, 40k, relic knights, maybe some weird world war stuff….it’s a fun mind exercise at least.
Another great show guys.
I always had issues docking in Elite, I could never match the rotation of the stations. An elite rpg sounds great in the manner described, if only I had the time to roleplay at all.
so many things, never enough money
I need to sit down and relax with this weekender!..It hasnt been a wonderful weekend so far!..so it is nice to watch a new episode of this!
I doubt that the real historians and archaeologists doubt that exodus story because they are too lazy to rewrite their books. I think it’s more that they have heard about the scientific method. Prove a scientist wrong and he’ll happily change his mind. Prove a religious fanatic wrong and he’ll start singing “la la la I’m not listening”.
Shadowgames and elite dangerous look great.
The moment when Warren goes “Pirramitt” and you exactly remember the episode, when he told us about this documentary with the guy that always said “Pirramitts” and you think: “Damn I’ve been watching these dudes for quite a while now!”
Also like the new Hub-Swish-Music. Reminds me of the old “On the Table”-days. Think you had something similar running in the In-Between-Shots.
well now i’m playing guild ball, thank you very much.
well that explains the glasses @warzan dinging your bell to much? HUuummm?
Had Lunch, can’t wait to fight rats in the dessert.
shadow games! keep it up with the weekender show guys.
A great show guys the new stuff coming out looks great I loved playing elite back in the time and frontier.
Thanks for the show guys, see you on XLBS
I can’t wait for elite. What a throwback
Love Deep cut studio maps, that one is perfect for old west RPGs. My 5 min map would be a Bruce Lee kung fu game where you need to beat the bosses in each room to continue using walls and doors to funnel the combat until you reach the big boss at the end/throne room. Maybe use A Fist full of Kung Fu for the rules. Some random scatter terrain and print out some japanese sliding doors on stands as walls. Or even better use two heros racing to the end like in Bunraku so you have eastern and western characters!
Thanks again lads, Keep off the sugar Warren you’ll notice a difference. Just as well I am a backstager as the prospect of dinging Warren’s dong holds very little appeal (Sorry Warren)
I have been manfully avoiding Relic Knights week .. the last thing I need is another game and if it is as good as you say it is … well .. I am a weak, pathetic man, what can I say it’s not you it’s me.
With the wooden floor mat, the first thing I thought of was ship board combat you could .. with a number of cut outs have two ship with multiple decks and have boarding actions etc, (we used to do that with Warhammer minis in our Man of War games (A game few people now remember) and geez it was a hoot.
I was slightly disappointed that we didn’t see more of shadow games, but hell if you have a whole video of a play through I won’t complain. I really like Steamforged games and what they are doing with Guild ball and I want to see how Shadow Games plays.
On an unrelated issue I must comment on the music between the segments, I notice you changed it to a more hip boppy sort of techo travelling style, rather than the old ” whaa whaa wap whaa wa-wa wap” … hmm jury’s out .. I’m sure I’ll adapt … but a little part of me has died… sniff
@beardragon14 We’re been slowly changing a few things for Youtube to allow for use of Cards instead of annotations. This way if we mention a link you can click it on your mobile device too 🙂
Thanks for the info Lance. I suppose if it’s for a good reason I can live with it …. sigh … 😉 She’s all good mate 😉
For the woodgrain mat, I can see a massive saloon fight in Wild West Exodus! Beer and bullets for all!
And with a little tweaking, the Elite Dangerous RPG could easily be adapted for a setting like Destiny to get other people interested in the world of pen & paper RPG and tabletop. I might back it for that reason alone.
For that Deep Cut mat- when you said Wolsung it made me immediately think of a museum battle with staircases, display cases and dioramas and a gurt big dinosaur skeleton in the middle!
Absolute great idea @jonhay – especially with the big skeleton.
wuhu love these!
SMOG looks like it could be great.
Nice move from Cmon to let people get in 1dollar in there ks, after Xmas my wallett is empty, Sad Panda
@warzan: any new on Vanguard of War gameplay video?
@skolo we will have one with you very soon. 🙂
The Shadow Games looks great! The artwork looks fantastic and the bluffing aspect sound like a blast!!! Nice job Steamforged!!! Now.. where are the further Season 3 spoilers!!!???!!!!
Happy Saturday!
And once again a glourious Weekender. I dinged the dong! 😀
Am loving the ‘Warren meets Mat’ series. I like the idea of using the wooden decking mat as a palace for something like Wolsung. Or how about for an Achtung Cthulhu! or other weird war skirmish game set at one of the great diplomatic events like the Yalta or Tehran conferences, where a small group of undercover commandos are going room to room trying to find and kill Churchill?
You could also for some weird SF or fantasy game create some wooden rings you could put around some trees and scatter them across the mat. So the matt would represent an absolutely gigantic treehouse with brances of some collosal tree growing through openings / portals in the floor. Clearly the tree would be hundreds of meters or perhaps kilometers high.
Five minutes indeed!
Also for Lord of the rings and Hobbit . the home of Beorn the were Bear has a wood floor with a massive tree growing from the centre and through the roof.
Be good to have beorn and heroes ( bildo, gandalf, 13 Dwarfs holding the centre from a huge horde of goblins kinda new aside story from the Hobbit, or from LOTR beorn and his army of woodsmen vs the uruk there after retreating from the high passes with the uruk chasing
I’ll be getting some of those houses. They look great.
Good show guys. The RPG sounds interesting as does the card game Shadow Games. A nice small card game.
The capper to a great weekend is the BoW Weekender! Game of Shadows looks really intriguing for a travel game and with the small ruleset may even be able to convince the significant other to play….
liking the look of the shadow cast of dark age
Got to agree with @warzan the few quid for the backstage pass is definitely worth it and cheap as chips, however the hundreds of pounds he persuades me to spend on kickstarter with his boundless enthusiasm …
Looking forward to Elite roleplaying game, hoping for something traveller like as have great memories of playing traveller in my younger days.
I am soooo looking forward to seeing what you guys produce with the Steamforged guys. I just started Guild Ball. I’ve got half my Fishermen painted up and played my first game on Saturday. It was a lot of fun.
Happy weekend guys
Wouldnt it be great if all mats were double sided?
Shadow games looks fun, but I usually suck at bluffing games…
loved the show, that is a great mat but i’m defiantly more fan of it as an interior. otherwise it needs a lot of sidewalk support to get outside of walls. not a fan of streets made of wood planks.
I’ll lurk in my Shadow 😉
Grew up on Elite, had notepads full of trade routes and prices, very interesting to learn there is an rpg for this now. Will need to look into this further
