The newest expansion for the hit board game, Wingspan, is lined up to release this November. Wingspan Asia throws a whole bunch of new elements into the mix for Duet (two-player) play, much larger groups and more. Could you be tempted by these beautiful new birds from Stonemaier Games?

Wingspan Asia - Stonemaier Games

At the heart of the new set is the two new modes of play. You've got Duet Mode which has been designed to make the two-player experience all the more refined and interesting. With the Duet Mode, you'll go head to head as normal but you'll also be playing to take control of a map which features goals that you're trying to complete.

In that vein, Wingspan Asia is actually a standalone expansion (expandalone?). You can just pick up Wingspan Asia and you'll be sorted for playing with two players. However, the elements from the expansion can be used to turn the game into a six or seven-player BIG game called Flock Mode.

Flock Mode is interesting because it turns games of Wingspan into much longer affairs with two hours slated for your first experience. To speed things up, two players will take their turns simultaneously and they will only be able to draw from their own group's resources. Yes, Flock Mode splits you up into "teams" which changes the dynamic at the tabletop and offers up some interesting new tactical decision making!

I do like that Wingspan Asia isn't just adding new cards into the equation but instead building on what Wingspan can offer as a game. Oceania was a really great addition to the game, speeding things up and offering up a much smoother (it was pretty smooth already) game experience when it came to handling resources and the growth of your board. Wingspan Asia seems like a solid next step, especially with the Duet Mode and Flock Mode coming in to support bigger and smaller groups.

I feel like I might need to do some catching up when it comes to Wingspan. I have the European expansion but have only played the Oceania one. I'll have to snap that up alongside Asia when it becomes available in November!

If you're interested in learning more about the expansion, the rulebook for Asia can be found HERE.

Will you be snapping this up?
