Get ready to dangle precariously above an ancient Mayan temple, because Lara Croft is coming to the tabletop.

The announcement came from Square Enix on Twitter, following a series of online clues.  Not much is known about the game, which previewed at Gamescom in Cologne.  However, Square Enix has said a familiar artifact will be of importance to helping solve Croft's mystery.

Early release pictures of the game board look promising.  Each player takes on a different iteration of the famous treasure-hunter throughout the franchise history and progress around a circular board, drawing cards, taking damage and placing tiles.

I'm pretty excited about this release.  Yes, a lot of this is hype - the new video game Shadow of the Tomb Raider was also previewing at Gamescom, and Square Enix could easily make board game money off the Tomb Raider brand without having to put any real effort into the board game mechanic.

However, the images that have been released so far demonstrate a well-crafted board game with a beautiful design, and miniatures which successfully scratch that dual-gamer itch.  And I love the legends theme - being able to play as the original Lara Croft is gloriously nostalgic.  Definitely on my wishlist!

What video game would you most like to see developed into a board game?
