Happy Sunday everyone 🙂
Happy Sunday. Think I will watch this to fall asleep
This is what my Saturday night has come to. 1:00 AM go to BoW. No XLBS. Hit F5. Still no XLBS. My gods, the internet is broken! 1:01 AM. F5. Some hesitation building. Page loads and still no XLBS. 1:02 AM. F5, F5, F5. Withdrawal symptoms set in. Heart rate accelerates. 1:03 AM. Checks forums for announcements of the death of a Beast. Nothing, go back to the main page. 1:04 AM. The world is on fire, and I’m the only one left. The zombies have risen. The aliens invaded and Ireland is in smoking ruins. 1:05 AM, XLBS loads. Hit play.
Aaaand relax. 🙂
Happy Sunday!
The warships were two Dutch, and one British – and it was in the far east the had been lost.
And you should know there was folks in America in 1815, you seem to like the battle of New Orleans from the war of 1812 (or just after the war …)
The lost ships were in Indonesia. people saw salvage ships on their location.
In our newspaper it stated that there were 3 Dutch shipwrecks from WWII before the coast of Indonesia. Two are completely gone and big parts of the third. They think that the wrecks were scrapped for the metal, just like Justin said. And It seems that there are hundreds of shipwrecks in the area.
The Americans also noticed that somebody has been poking around the wreck of the USS Houston without permission, that is located in that area.
Glad you enjoyed it I can supply you with some more any time. We even got Justin on board.
Justin there were people in America in 1815. American Revolution was 1776 and had a big role in destroying France and letting Napoleon come to power. The British fought the United States from 1812-1815 during the War of 1812 or The Forgotten War where those pesky Canadians burned down the Government and the Americans created the White House.
You really got me with that Neybours joke well done sir.
Happy Sunday!
Is there a place or the reistance down in the DFC cities – fighting back against the invaders?
Battleships in the Dead Sea? Red Sea maybe.. Lol!
American Declaration of INdependence – 1777… Battle of Waterloo 1815… do the Maths!
New Carnevale location? N’Awlinz baay – N’Awlinz
How to deal with a charging line of Elephants: Everyone knows – even though Legolas took his Olliphant from behind (?!?) – that you leap up onto it, kill its inhabitants, drive something sharp into its brain and leap off before it knocks over all the others in a dominos like fashion.
Certainly Cohen the Barbarian should be able to do so… 😉
@dignity great job having Warren doing a Goldfish impression when asked what do you call a space battlefield 🙂 As for the resistance in space in DFC, it worked for Star Wars hehe.
@warzan don’t be silly it wasn’t aliens, it was the Kraken warming up for a resurgence having seen the Mythic Pantheon KS. He’s getting in some battleship dumbbell curls to look the part. On Naval items did you know World of Warships/World of Tanks may be joining with sandboxr so you can 3d print your ships and tanks and will be customisable to match yours in game. Don’t tell John or he’ll have no money left hehe.
Here’s a conspiracy theory for you to consider.
The so called pandemic Spanish flu c1918-1920.
60-100 million dead.
Freak of nature or bacteriological warfare to depopulate the enemy and finish the war?
@warzan if ‘Spanish Flu’ was a result of bacteriological warfare that got out of control, then what of Chinese Flu, Bird Flu and Swine Flu? Are they naturally occurring strains of a distant cousin or is there something more sinister afoot? (Cue x-files music) 😉
I think you will find that there were people in America before Europeans arrived.
And they are still battling for their rights – look at what is happening at Standing Rock.
Im pretty sure Justin was wondering about the early colonists not the indiginous people 🙂
Although you can never be sure!!! 😉

In regards to Ney at Waterloo there is some discussion that he was trying to get back into Napoleons good books after screwing up at Quatre Bras a few day earlier so launched the cavalry early to try and show Napoleon he gadnt list his nerve
Why was Ney sentenced to death. Mainly because he had pledged allegiance to the new French King and promised to capture Napoleon when he landed at Grenoble do was unlike the rest if the French army as s traitor
The main idea is that France was still a rebellious powder keg as shown by Napoleons easy take over and they needed to have him beaten in a large battle that would destroy the peoples faith in him. What better way than to kill tens of thousands of Frenchmen in crazy assaults.
Remember the average death toll for a Napoleonic Battle was very low.
At the Battle of the Pyramids Napoleon lost 29 men out of 20,000
At the Battle of Talavera the French lost 7300 out of 46,000
At the Battle of Salamanca the French lost 6000 out of 50,000
At the Battle of Borodino the French lost 35,000 Dead out of 190,000.
At the Battle of Austerlitz (my favourite and the single greatest battle Napoleon fought) the French lost 1300 out of 67,000
Yet at Waterloo the French lost 26,000 out of 70,000. Huge losses for the Period and it utterly crushed the French moral and destroyed Napoleons credability as a great leader among the French.
There is a theory that Ney had PTSD after seeing 2000 of his men that he’d fought with for years, buried in a mass grave after freezing to death. This may have made him snap and order the charge’s (14 of them) out of panic or loss of judgment. The powers that be then could have taken pity on him and let him flee into exhile. This could also help to explain his suicide attempt. I don’t know his motives or how it was done only that the Neys seem to be almost perfect matches
David Chandler, author of The Campaigns of Napoleon, always used to refer to Ney as “the bravest of the brave, and the thickest of the thick.”
I would agree with you that Ney suffered trauma in the Russian campaign. I have to disagree with the idea that Ney faked his execution, however, as given that he allowed Napoleon to return, I am sure his death was watched by enough officials of the new French government that he could not get away with that.
Elon Musk didn’t create electric cars. They are very old they were just slow and couldn’t go very far also most electric car companies made ugly or funny looking ones. So he made a fast cool looking one with a decent action radius.
@warzan they were 3 Dutch battleships in the Java sea. https://www.thesun.co.uk/news/2198030/mystery-disappearance-dutch-battleships-sunk-japanese-wwii-vanish-seabed/
Justin was right all ships has been cut to peaces and sold as scrap.
Had a look at the hex jig and have been trying to do costing compared to the Hex terrain Kallistra do. Yes the Kallistra stuff uis expensive but it’s made from hard plastic so will last a long time. Our group has made polystyrene hexes before and sadly they do damage easily so we tended to have to replace quite a lot over the years we used it.
Saying that I think this guy’s idea us fabulous and a lot more games are going to hex or squares to speed games up in regards to movement and more traditional games both on land see and air like DBM,Grand fleet etchave had hex conversions done for them
*Stares at my 400+ hours played on Elder Scrolls: Skyrim*
Also, that neighbours joke had me chuckling!
To the left!!!
Happy Sunday all, great show as always.
@warzan there is a conspiracy dating back to the Roman period, that suggests captured legionnaires ended up in Han ruled China.
http://beyondthirtynine.com/a-roman-legion-lost-in-china-2/
Is this the one where Roman soldiers were sold as slaves after the capture of Valerian
I think this one is highly possible. Trajan without knowing it got within a days march of the Chinese frontier and China wasn’t as isolated at that time as historians first thought
This is after the defeat of Crassus by the Persian or Parthian Empire, captured Romans were taken in to the Empire and enlisted. It’s believe they were posted near the border with Han China.
Another article on the theory: http://www.historicmysteries.com/a-roman-legion-in-china/
It is very possible – these Romans (Crassus) and later Legionaries who fought in Nero’s Armenian War ended up in Merv-Bactria 🙂
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Roman-Empire-Silk-Routes-Ancient/dp/1473833744
there are so many great wargame scenarios could be played in the wider ancient world…
Nevermind China – 47 Ronin is on Film Four and…

their ship probably got attacked by one of those sea monsters!
Devastated to hear the pub has been sold.. 🙁
Good news that there is one even nearer tho and having the option to separate us from the general public is probably only wise. @commodorerob and I can talk about Cromwell without getting lynched then.
Concerning DFC, I am actually with @dignity in this one, a Resistance Fleet, illogical and rag tag as it it might be, would be awesome. I’m sure over a few pints Dave will come up
with a plausible explanation why they could have access to ships…
Not sure about the Ney ‘conspiracy’. Stabbing himself in the neck seems a bit girly for a cavalryman..and claiming to be ‘Ney of France’ on your deathbed when your name is actually Ney and you are from France..well, if he’d said ‘Vive l’Empreur!’ maybe.
The hex terrain looks cool. Poor @johnlyons tho, it really does look brutally fiddly and time consuming!!
Yea, I could see a Battlestar making it into the fleet! 😉
@warzan it’s not the kids, just your age making you flag early.
Hmm, that sounded comforting in my head, before I hit “send”.
The Ney theory may have some credence a lot of the old Napoleon diehards from the Old Guard moved to Louisiana after Waterloo to avoid persecution, there is
even anold John Wayne movie about it with Oliver Hardy of Laurel and Hardy fame as his sidekick.
Just started to write that. You saved me the trouble. 🙂
Given the facts you presented on the Ney conspiracy I’d say he doublecrossed Napoleon.
Beause if Napoleon was exiled instead of executed, why wouldn’t Ney be treated the same way? If he was loyal to Napoleon, perhaps there was too much risk of them getting together again and making another attempt at disturbing the power balance.
But if Ney had secretly aided the king then there was the risk of Napoleon finding out or the conspiracy becoming public in some other way, damaging the reputation of the king.
What did you do in those times when you wanted to get people out of European politics without resorting to killing them? You sent them to the colonies.
Indeed the most believable theory you spouted on the show so far.
Keep them coming. It makes for an entertaining Sunday morning.
There are a number of Harry Potter board games, including a version of Cluedo.
The most recent enter is Harry Potter: Hogwarts Battle from USAopoly, which I think came out at or around Gen Con this year.
I’ve got the Cluedo one!!! 🙂
Will be nice to see one with amazing miniatures though 🙂
Watching Gangs of New York added to the to do list 😛
happy sunday! great show again guys, thank you!
on the subject of everything nautical I know one or two things you might find interesting, I apologise for the up coming rant. 🙂 My grandfather was in the german navy during WW2 and he thought me sailing, so I can sail a small boat on my own. Additionally I’m a rescue swimmer and a dive instructor with over 500 dives under my belt. I’m not surprised that two ships just disappeared, and no they won’t have been salvaged. Salvaging sunken boats is a huge enterprise and not easy at all you need a lot of equipment, most of the times the window to do so is very narrow because of weather conditions. The only reason why something gets salvaged is when it sunk recently and the cargo is very valuable. As an example I know a boat that transported teak wood, even the teak wood is still in the boat because it would be to expansive to bring it back up to the surface. And its not deep where it is its only 30 meters and close to the coastline. So imagine two old war ships in the middle of the ocean, the costs to bring them two up would be to high and you couldn’t do it without someone noticing it.
First of all we know nothing about our oceans, we know about 10% of our oceans, we know more about our solar system and the rest of the universe than we know about our own oceans. The budget of a standard space mission today would sustain all marine biology research programs conducted right now world wide for another 10 years!
As an example I will tell you something about the Humboldt Squid. There is nothing in the oceans that scares me besides the Humboldt Squid and saltwater crocodiles. Not even a great white scares me I have huge respect for them but I don’t find them scary. The Humboldt Squid on the other hand is scary as f****! We didn’t know much about them until most hammerhead sharks and other sharks got wiped out in the Sea of Cortez on the west coast of Mexico. Suddenly there were reports of man eating squids, squids attacking fisherman pulling them in the water, etc.
A guy from the US who was a navy seal heard about the stories and didn’t believe them. He said there are no sea monsters thats stupid, so of he went to Mexico to find them and proof that they are not as dangerous as people said they might be. Long story short on his first dive looking for them he almost got killed by them, they broke his wrist, dislocated his shoulder broke multiple rips, rapture his ear drum because they where pulling him down to fast and he claims only his training and his physique prevented a very cruel death. He is know one of the leading experts for Humboldt Squid and helps scientist to study them. Now when they go diving with them they where chain mail diving suites and are attached with cables to the boat so the Squid cant drag them down.
The scary thing about these squids is, as we know now, that they are highly aggressive, highly intelligent and very very fast. They hunt in swarms like wolves would do, they attack everything that is eatable even their on kind. If one of them gets caught on a hook his buddies will attack instantly because it cant defend it self and they know it. When they hunt their prey they will surround it and stay out of reach, then one of them will attack and let go, then the next one will attack and so on. What they are doing is they gather intel, when they know enough about their prey the whole swarm will attack. They communicate through changing their colour like a chameleon.
Why we never heard of them? Well they where hiding in the depth and in the dark they only come up to surface at night during the day they stay down below. The sharks kept their numbers small and because of the sharks they didn’t came up to the surface so often. Now the sharks are almost gone and suddenly they appear and become a huge problem, not only on the west coast of Mexico no for the whole west coast of north america. In some regions of the US you can buy squid burgers, steak, etc. because the fishermen wont catch anything else.
The Humboldt Squid is a good example why we know just a small part of our Oceans and a ex Navy Seal Diver has to come and investigate them because nobody else was bothered by it.
Now another interesting story, I think it was 2002 Norwegian fishermen caught by accident a couple of kraken. Male and female, the male got damaged by the net but the female was almost intact. The fishermen gave the couple to some scientist who had a closer look at them. It was the first time that a kraken that big hat been caught and was in one peace. There were hints before mostly scars on whales or tentacles found in the stomach of a whale.
The female was 6,90 meters long and was about one year old. The scientist found out that she needed about one year to grow from 1mm to 6,90m what makes them the fastest growing animal in the world. We dont know how old they get but just imagine they get 10 years old how big they can become. Because of that scientists believe kraken are the fastest evolving species on the planet and in a couple of million years they could sit on top of the food chain not us.
Oh and there is no need to close the street of Gibraltar because its closing it self, slowly but it will close at one point in time. As well as Africa will break apart and will create a new ocean.
I have more stories like that but that would break the comment section I believe! Thats officially my longest comment ever on BoW! Happy gaming everyone!
Legacy – I think I really first struck that, in gaming, when D&D first edition came out. We weren’t tearing up cards, but we were changing our character sheets…. Unless the story lead them to an unfortunate demise.
Surely the most hard hitting example, in gaming turns, is the End Times from 8th Ed WFB.
I gotta say that while I love a good conspiracy theory, I have to say that the actual history of Marshal Ney’s death is slightly more romantic. his last words to the soldiers whose task it was to execute him were:
“Soldiers, when I give the command to fire, fire straight at my heart. Wait for the order. It will be my last to you. I protest against my condemnation. I have fought a hundred battles for France, and not one against her … Soldiers, fire!”
What a man.
On Legacy Games:
The Legacy format is discouraging me from buying certain products. I’ve bought and played both editions of the Pandemic board games, and i have all the expansions for both games, all but one of which i’ve played. I still play them and I would have continued to buy into those games. What i liked about them was the smooth intelligent gameplay, the quality of the board and pieces ( i was a little saddened by the move from wood to plastic, but it was still good quality ), and the replayability. Z-man Games had given me a certain amount of trust in the quality of their products, to the extent that i was happy to buy more Pandemic expansions or editions as they were released and without much information. When i went looking for new games the Z-man Games website was one of the few board game manufacturers websites i would visit ( as opposed to general games stores and their websites ). When the Legacy Pandemic Season 1 arrived i bought it straight away. It promised to combine one of my favourite games with progressive campaigns – something i like in miniatures games and that i’d hoped would get slicker for some time. Alas, when i opened it up i discovered cheap looking components that had been designed to be used once and thrown away, which kills two of the things i like about Pandemic in the first place. So it’s been sitting on a shelf for a year whilst i decide if i’m going to sell it or ‘fix’ it by making the components re-usable. Unless i find the process of fixing it fairly simply and quick i doubt i’ll buy Season 2. I have no intention to do so at the current time. Moreover, Z-man Games has gone down in my estimation.
Right now i’m deciding whether or not to buy the Android: Netrunner Legacy style box set expansion. ( I have all the Android: Netrunner cards, including 3 Core Sets. ) If the coming box set expansion were only a one-play-throw-away Legacy game i don’t think i would buy it, but because it is also a bunch of cards for the LCG i might. My decision is partly dependent on the fact that i’ve written some house rules and errata that i’m hoping to find players to play, and i’m considering not collecting anymore cards ( or at least not auto-purchasing when them they are released ) after the end of the current cycle. The fact that i might now need to pay a premium for one-play-throw-away components in legacy boxes in order to keep up to date with my collection is convincing me to stop collecting.
I think OPTA ( One Play Throw Away ) describes the current Legacy format well. In order to convince me to buy into Legacy format games that OPTA element of them would need to change, which is a shame because otherwise the Legacy format is exactly what i’m looking for. I think @warzan ‘s comparison to the video industry is a little misplaced, at least from from my point of view. As it happens i’m thinking of buying a gaming console ( PS4 ) for the first time in some years. I haven’t bought one since my PS2. Although video games do tend to have a ‘beginning, middle and end’ as Legacy games do, what encourages me to buy into the next game in the series is that the first game was great to play each and every time i played. Unlike the OPTA Legacy format they are replayable, and that’s key.
If the OPTA components ( such as the cards that need to be ripped up and thrown away ) in Legacy games could be replaced relatively cheaply ( in the form of replacement packs ) then i would be more likely to buy them.
Pandemic Legacy would come at about the bottom of a list of games I regret ever buying. It’s incredible and I loved every card-tearing, card-scratching, box-popping, sticker-laying moment of it. I’d take 20 hours of that for my £50 than any amount of hours of just about any other game.
That said, if you want to make it replayable it’s easily done. A group I know did exactly that. They put the stickers on little wooden cylinders, didn’t tear anything up or do any other changes that couldn’t be reversed, and to date have played their copy through three times. That number alone should tell you how much they enjoy it also.
I appreciate the feedback on that. It’s good to hear that making it replayable is easily done. However, the very fact i need to do that puts it on a hobby to do list, along with painting miniatures, house rule writing, etc, instead of it being something that’s ready to play.
I mean, you could also embrace the destruction that is designed into the game. I love that. It makes you think more about your choices.
The collector-slash-borderline hoarder in me hates it. But, I’ve accepted it.
@derekkinsman I could, but i won’t. I see the logic, but i take my time anyway and i’d rather be able to replay it ( without spending another wad of cash to repurchase ). And in any case that would still leave two issues for me, namely the aesthetic of the lower quality components, and the unnecessary enviromental impact of throw away plastic.
For the potter game you are talking about, I think a format similar to flying frog’s Shadows of Brimstone would work well. Their whole exploration tokens found in rooms, which result in encounters which result in skill tests. Do you encounter filch in the hallways and either all need to pass an agility test to hide from him, or one person pass a cunning test to convince him you have a legit purpose.
It also has great artifact and gear cards that could be adapted to the various cool magical artifacts they find in the books.
Lastly, the SoB system has storyline campaigns, but missions that are limited in scope. While one boxed set could be “year 2, the chamber of secrets” it could have 10 missions, with each being something like “get the book from the library restricted section.” However, the random map tiles and encounters, combined with different PCs, could mean playing out the same “mission” from the books in very different ways.
I think the pitfall the game could fall into would be trying to fit too much into a single gaming session.
Happy Sunday… It is still. Sunday right..had a lay in today
@warzan i know some people who can help on a the Naval gaming show stuff, a Naval Historian who has been on TV and is a Wargamer and a guy who works with The RN and writes naval rules.
On those missing ships, they were not Battleships, they were wrecks from the battle of the Java sea which was the battle against the Japanese with a combined British,US and Dutch fleet in which the Dutch Admiral Carel Doorman was killed. It was the largest surface engagement since Jutland but the largest ship was a Heavy Cruiser so no battleships involved 🙂
They were ships that did battle 😉
true… but not to be too pendantic… ok i am going to be pedantic…lol the term battleship is derived from the term line-of-battle-ships and shortened to Battleship. So were the ships with the most armour and heaviest weight of guns:-) the correct term you should probably have used is Warship:-)
About Ney, I doubt he did doublecross Napoleon, as the Marshal of France – he did go to do the kings (the king of France) and bring Napoleon back to Paris in a cage. But he rejoined his old boss instead, at the start of the 100 days, that is the reason the king would have him executed for that initial betrayal.
Ney’s actions a Waterloo, remember that he had command of the French forces at Quatre Bras a few days before, so if he was looking to loose the war, that would have been a better chance.
Ney was not a Napoleon, I always seen him a best in a defensive like covering the retreat from Moscow, he did miss read the movement of some of the centre of Wellingtons army and threw away his reserve of cavalry.
I have alway had a soft spot for the Mustang who worked his way up to Marshal – so I hope he did make it to the Carolinas
On Canivale how about St Peterberg in Russia that would work 🙂
That. Would. Be. Amazing!!!!
I am really really sorry guys…. *Arsehole hat comes out*…. Ahem….
Michel Ney was a Marshal of the Empire and a Marshal was not a military title, it was a title of the Courts. Ney was considered a lunatic or a madman (even being called “le Brave des Braves” (The Bravest of the Brave) by Napoleon himself) but his madman status was formed in a time when the typical infantry tactics was to form lines approx 50 yards (sometimes closer) to the enemy, and fire volley after volley until one side turned and fled (I am aware this is very basic and there are a number of battles that this changed, but this is the basic infantry tactic). One of the reasons his cavalry attacks were questionned due to being unsupported or in unusual parts of the battle was because Ney enlisted in the 4th Hussars and learned how effective cavalry could be, especially when the enemy was unprepared for it. During the Battle of Waterloo alone, Ney had a total of 5 horses shot from under him and led one of the final infantry charges on foot. Ney was executed by firing squad on Dec 7, 1815. He refused the blindfold and was allowed to give the order to fire himself. Picking his own firing squad was not common, but not unheard of. Some high ranking officers were allowed to pick their firing squads to make sure the marksmen would hit their mark allowing for a quick death.
All this about him living in America after this is really odd, even by conspiricy theories. First of all, if you were going to live in another country and were incredibly well known, why would you keep your surname? Although there was no Internet, the Americas were well aware of the European conflicts happening and know about Napoleon and his staff. The name “Peter” is the English translation for “Pierre” (I have been unable to confirm if Ney’s mother’s maiden name was “Stuart” or anything similar), but it is really strange for someone to live a new identity using names linked to your parents and your own surname…
Empty coffins are thrown into so many conspiricy theories I think that needs to be ruled out.
The man’s last words: “I am Ney of France”. There are numerous cases of people suffering mental issues believing they are someone else. If this man was Ney, a confession could be plausible, but if not and this man was a “teacher”, but had a life of having the same name as a famous Marshal could have easily started to believe he was Michel Ney.
My personal view is this is Coincidence, not Conspiricy.
By the way Justin: Mayflower landed at Plymouth Rock in 1620. Waterloo was 18th June 1815. 🙂
There is a fine line between mad and brave 😉
Agressive on the attack, even to the point of throwing away the cavalry
@warzan iron maiden must now become compulsory listening at the bow studio to remedy such a shocking state of affairs.
Iron Maiden should be compulsory listening everywhere; )
yes totally agree
I hope everyone had a great time at the boat camp, I have been MIA for awhile, so i will have to catch up 🙂
@warzan If you want a real out there conspiracy theory not that I am a big believe in conspiracy theories. So here it is, so the reason that there was a huge up take in sightings of UFOs after WWII is because of this… There are a people that live under the sea, but they live at such depths that most things don’t effect them, so, during WWII with all of the naval battles finally our world effected theirs with all of this sinking wreckage, they decided they need to find out what was going on up there and all those UFO’s were them checking out wtf was going on up here.
Short but sweet, there is more on the theory out there but if you want one that will really melt your brain check out the berenstain bears theory that, will damn melt your brain, because we are living it right now…
(not really I can explain it easy but the theory is so fun)
it absolutely matters what you think Warren my mate. its always nice to have someone who’s opinion you respect say they think your talking sense. same goes for when you liked my kingdom death monster comment the other week.
its been a rough couple of weeks and getting a little love from beasts of war makes all the difference.
if you need energy for boot camps then make like Santa on Christmas eve, have a full sack.
Just putting in my 2 cents to have a review of the hex terrain building system. I believe this is an excellent and quick way to build terrain of any type and he even has tutorials of building dungeons. IMHO, this is the way to go.
Happy Sunday!
Well, for those wanting to go the road of building tables, that Hex Kickstarter is a neat idea. But i’m with John & Ben on this: too much work (at least to me). I now prefer gaming mats…
On the Carnavale front, i almost got on it because i liked the look of it but, since i play multiple types of games, i thought that a Venise table was just for that game and nothing else… so yeah, i’m with you @warzan, they need to go elsewhere to maybe draw in more people…
See you guys next week
@warzan there was already a quiditch boardgame called hogwarts house cup challenge by reel games. I got it for my girls many years ago. man did it suck, but it has been done.
and of course the harry potter quidditch boardgame, which sucked even more.
@warzan maybe all you need is an underwater gaming mat…….
http://battleboards.co.uk/shop/battlemats/battlemat-underwaterocean-seabed-3ft-x-3ft/
Carnivalle would be better in Boston than New York. Both have lots of immigrants in the time period and this would open up the Salem idea and keep the Indian stories as a possible arc.
Or take a different take and do a Charleston South Carolina and it would fit in awesome and have that old families storyline with a great mix of cultures.
Or even New Orleans, with the mix of culture down there
Related to being a soldier charged by elephants, If you’re in a disciplined block of troops you can’t simply “run left” or “run right”. Probably you would die anyway in the crush of people if such poor discipline was allowed.
Also I love the hex tile toolkit and the idea of the fun to be had assembling different layouts. It’s like terrain Lego! The only downside is the high probability of miniatures – especially top-heavy metal ones – constantly falling over on the uneven surface. 15mm or less scale figures should have no problems.
Most rule sets these days either use movement trays or multi figure bases so falling over wouldnt have any problem I think
@warzan @dignity you mentioned on the last XLBS Weekender looking at more Naval tabletop games. found a great looking Kickstarter thats live at the momant. its name is Naval Battle in Archipelago (Board Game).
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1732812836/naval-battle-in-archipelago-board-game
And now @dignity knows the value of having Skaven allies. They are the solution to being charged by armored elephants. 😉
The hex based terrain system is increadible – I am not a fan of hex boards generally – but seeing how the 4″ sections allow for subtle undulations in the terrain – that makes a huge change in how a game might play. Imagine playing a mass army battle like Kings of War, where you could have low, rolling hills to maneuver behind or attack down from – you suddenly leave the realm of tactical game – units against units – and enter the world of tactical battles – units and terrain. Also, because the tiles only fit together with certain rules (very loose rules, but some non-the-less) – you could build a board with an I-go-U-go method and watch the strategic decisions around terrain… do I let him build that slope higher so I can widen the river where I want it, or do I constantly counter his placements … it becomes almost a simulation of ancient commanders choosing where to fight.
To the left! Nice show looking forward to merchandise….
Happy Sunday 🙂
a jolly good show. Keep those conspiracy theories coming @warzan they really make me laugh my ass off.
Thanks again for the Jammie dance on frontstage. Has made my weekend and when the next weekender airs I’ll be on my way to see Ronnie at the Mantic Open Day and tell him how awesome he is!
For a Naval game I can’t recommend Dystopian Wars by Spartan Games enough. It’s very token heavy but we’ve found by printing off stat cards and putting tokens on them rather than by the ships it tends to run smoother (you dont have to move the tokens around with the ships).
As for bootcamps, before you recover too much, maybe a Spartan Games one or a roleplay group run by Ben? I’d love a solid weekend of roleplaying with painted minis or just some kind of awesome dungeon crawl…
ps. What is Darth Vader holding (above Warren’s head)?
@cybermonkey That would be a Blood Gelt from Dark Age, think of it like the Golden ticket that will let you enter the Immortals tournament that the guys at Cool mini run.
Enjoyed the XLB show today. If any is looking for more female characters check out this link from Oathsworn Miniatures. These are from their 2 kickstarters Sensible Shoes & they are awesome looking mini’s. Just don’t go petting the owlbear cub.

Interesting subjects, as usual ( usually 🙂
Thorium – I agree with Justin & Warren that it needs to be used. Just got introduced to the subject half a year ago.
Conspiracy Theories – just a mention that Season 2 of “Hunting Hitler” is on ( History Channel in Canada ) with more de-classified documents from other agencies around the world. Basically Hitler escaped to South America. Just sayin’ !
Naval Games – not sure if anyone has thought of rules similar to Dropfleet Commander, with Surface, Periscope Depth, & then a few lower depths, along with Sonar, Active Pinging, Running Silent, etc. to get the different detection ranges.
Naval Games – there is always Dystopian Wars from Spartan Games.
It looks like the game is getting a bit of a refresh, perhaps with a movement in the timeline (legacy elements) and even a Kickstarter – and we all know that BoW enjoy a good Kickstarter.
Perhaps you could wrap it all up in a bow 😉 with a bootcamp then transition to a web campaign.
The Ptolemais in Egypt (Greek kingdom) got Elephants from Somalia by sailing hundreds of miles down the Red Sea and loading them on boats… think how awesome that was 🙂
three weeks at sea with a cargo of captive elephants :-O
I would definitely be interested in buying BoW merch, if you would stop making me spend all of my money on kickstarters for long enough that could save some up to spend on you. 😉 😛 🙂
a great show guys the hex game mat looks interesting very (populous) looking I bet all the dogs near john’s house went nuts as he went NNNnnnnnnoooooooo thinking about all the terrain he will have to make for @warzan
Jamestown, VA 1607
Hampton, VA 1610
Plymouth, MA 1620
US Revolution 1765-1783
War of 1812 1812-1815
Waterloo 1815
Therefore, I think it is safe to assume that there were Europeans in the US at the time of Waterloo.
Whats happened to Hobbyween?
We’re looknig to get something sorted for that this week don’t worry @panzerkaput 🙂
If You guys wanna go nautilus…go check out Sails of Glory by ARES…Warren!..It is even set in the napoleonic era og 1815-ish. Man-o-wars battling it out with blackpowder cannons…sand on the deck so as not to slip in the blood…musket fire…grape shots…grog…U got it all in that game!
Tally ho!
Machinegod
I will second that response. Sails of Glory is a great Sailing ships game. I love it!
Regarding BoW Merchandise, without USA friendly shipping, it is no go for me. If you setup an eBay store and use the cross border shipping option of eBay or use Borderfree.com, then I would consider it, otherwise, shipping would be more than some of your items I am certain.
You can’t have a Resistance Fleet but you can have Remnants which could be comprised of Pirate and EAA Navy that combined. As well as They could be based from remote Orbital Space Station or Deep Space Stations or Black Op R&D facilities
Any chances that Justins & Dragons could make its way on to t-shirts or bags? That’d have my money.
Imagine Justin once he graduates from his apprenticeship…. I think this…..

Thanks very much, @warzan – for the shout out at the end of the show. 😀 Appreciate it as always.
Wow, no Iron Maiden knowledge… mega nega points to Justin and Ben…boooooo
Just bought into the Hex terrain Kickstarter, look like the solution to my tabletop terrain dreams. Thank you for bring this up on the weekender should of be front stage tho.
