Who is the new bloke in Gerry’s seat?
I think he’s called Warren – he was in Justin’s seat last week! 🙂
11 mins , how freaky is the boat moving , sailing into the sunset???
The planking really looks great!
Happy Sunday / Mothersday in the US
I must say that pirates is just too awesome. would love to try blood and plunder.
I’m with Warren on this. The only reason I paint is that I can’t afford to pay someone to do it for me.
It’s the other way round for me – I mostly paint, but I found that owning pieces e.g. I bought a piece of terrain of ebay that was painted well and it inspired me to do better.
Also not having the time to sit down and get a good number of models painted…
I’m firmly in the multi part plastic corner. One piece figures can be beautifully sculpted but for me personally they are always..dead. Plastics are more fun for me as I can convert or repair them easily. With metals I ALWAYS end up with paint chipping off some bendy part somewhere regardless of how many layers of coating they get 🙁
I can see why a lot of gamers like one piece figures but I enjoy building and painting plastics too much to have any warm feelings for one piece metals..
But..as always: Suum quique!
Couldn’t agree more and don’t get me started on the evils of multipart metals!
Yep one thing even the most pro metal guys admit is that mutli part metals are annoying.
Accelerant has fixed this but it’s still a thing.
The guys from Firelock Games did an epic job making everything 1 piece.
I use automotive self-etching metal primers and have never had paint chip off of a metal figure.
I agree specially that plastic can have amazing details now just like long time ago you could only get on metal.
Blood & Plunder looks amazing.
happy sunday!
I mentioned it yesterday regarding blood & plunder, have a look at Benerson Little, he wrote some fictional and non fictional books regarding the golden age of piracy. I read one of his fictional books and I would read some of his non fictional books in the future to get some inspiration for scenarios, campaigns, etc. Also I think I mentioned it before as well michael crichton’s book Pirate Latitudes would be a great inspiration for blood & plunder and is a great read for anyone who like Pirate stories.
Plastics for me all the way , there be pirates blood and plunder for everyone .
I’d like to paint more, but I get a limited hobby/gaming time and I’ll take playing every time over painting. I don’t enjoy painting and I’m a slow painter to boot. I’ve already long since decided not to buy any terrain I have to paint.
Happy Sunday! Miniatures that don’t require any assembling make the games feel much more accessible, from a personal point of view, I’ve started looking for games where there is little to no assembly required now.
So you pop the one piece minis out. Prep, spray, paint, sit back and then realize that your minis are boring as F**K. They look just like everyone else’s figures. Nothing like repetition to make me ditch a game. Long live multipart metal and resin.
Out of curiosity, how many unbuilt minis do you have in your collection? I bet your not playing with them either 😉
Accessibility definately has an appeal all of its own when time starts to become the major limiting factor.
Which is why for many (perhaps even most) they have more fun with meeples than minis…
the metal vs. plastic discussion was there when I joined the hobby in 1990/1991. The older companies where doing mostly single cast metal miniatures and as far as I can remember GW was one of the first gaming companies to bring plastics into the mix. Back then the ‘old guys’ hated the plastic minis from GW and wouldn’t touch them or look at them.
I didnt like plastics at the beginning because they just didnt look as good as metal minis. GW improved them over the years and they became more and more attractive to me. I liked the versatility of them and I liked to be able to ‘create’ my own minis.
today i like metal minis, why? dont know I just like them more than plastic i think I like to have something heavy in my hand 😀 . But I love my KD:M plastic models they are fantastic, also plastic can be more forgiving when you drop them.
Time is the biggest issue for me, for example the minis from blood & plunder are great for people with time issues. Unpack them paint them done! It takes me ages to finish my Infinity models, and most of my KD:M models are still not built. I just built and painted the ‘basic’ models so I can play the game but I haven’t touched the armor kits yet or painted the big monsters.
I think its up to personal preference there is no right or wrong way when it comes to plastic vs. metal its what you like and what you need.
I’m a moddeler that games so a huge part of my enjoyment is the build, that’s perhaps my only criticism of walking dead all out war is the prebuilt minis, that said I doubt it would have been played as much by me if they weren’t….
I keep my gaming and my model building hobbies as two separate hobbies that just happen to share techniques & tools.
I’m with you in a way here – while I enjoy painting primarily, games get sidelined without ever being played for me – ditched may be the wrong word, but another one comes in and steals my attention. All games get put to the side eventually – however some don’t get played even once as the minis are not ready while you still have the interest.
I’ve still got a whole Tau army sat waiting to be build and painted, but already moved onto collecting up both Tyranid and Genestealer cults…
Same here! Good to hear that Im not alone 🙂
I have a whole Tau army I need to build and paint but have already started collection both a Tyraid and Genestealer cult army, the problem is I have no time to paint but love the designs.
I don’t even want to talk about the amount of unpainted/unplayed with figures I have.
Blimey!
Son of a sea Biscuit!,
There goes my pieces of eight.
Blood and Thunder WOW
Pretty excited to check this out. I am very interested in how the ships work at this scale
I have to say that I am really tempted by Blood & Plunder, looking forward to the let’s plays.
Regarding vikings; we have a viking festival coming up in just under a month. Hordes of roving vikings, longships, longhouses, viking food, artisans – the lot.
Avaldsnes was the location of Harald Hairfair’s royal court, so it’s smack dab in viking country.
http://opplevavaldsnes.no/vikingfestivalen/
Leave it to @warzan to come up with “History in the gaps”…
Happy Sunday!
What size are those B&P bases? I can see the edges of those being prone to chipping and wondered whether they could be stuck onto a plastic base that will also provide stability on rough terrain.
Also – we’ve all been there with minis with fragile glue points to the base. Sorts that too.
Bases are 20mm ish bases and it’s all 1 piece. I bought about 150-200 minis from the kickstarter and 2 needed glue.
I found the stability and issue but a little circle of felt soon fixed it. Things being in units make the game more forgiving than a skirmish game since you can have 1 or 2 minis out of place if you have to.
I varnished the **** out of my edges and found they’re both chip free and look great since I painted them gold.
The game could be adapted easily for other bases though your only issue would be with the ships
This game does look interesting. I might look into it at some point.
Happy Sunday!
Metal v Plastic, I must admit that I detest plastic miniatures, having come from a modelling background making and painting Airfix kits you might think that I would be happy with them, but I gave up with plastic all those years ago because I got bored with having to spend hours putting things together before I could paint them.
Metal got me on to what I loved doing far quicker with much less preparation. I find it also holds much more detail, is much easier to paint and is far more resilient to damage than plastic. After playing with my friends WW2 plastics for just a couple of games most of the guns have lost the end of the barrels, almost all of the have lost packs or bayonet scabbards and arms are constantly falling off. My 25mm metal Anglo-Danes have been used frequently for over 30 years and while a few spears have broken off, are still in pretty much the same shape as when I first fielded them!
Horses for courses though, this is a hobby and each of us have our own preferences, but for me its metal every time.
Love the Firelock Pirates of course!
I think my own experiences are something similar. I have tried plastics but I really do hate having to build them. Took what little joy I get out of painting and hid it
Happy Sunday!
Plastics over metal all the way…
I returned to the hobby a few years ago and went through the same thoughts as Warren describes back in the day the metal minis were the high quality ones whereas the plastic minis were there to bulk out your force a bit. It’s taken a while to move over to the plastics as first choice – snobbery was certainly a factor for me, but I think it’s the fact that they are a bit bigger that is the primary appeal – that and the survivability if you drop or knock them over that means that plastic wins out for me now. The improvements in plastics have helped as the space hulk 1st edn terminators were massively porer than the metal ones.
Painting minis is somthing that you should enjoy if you dont then you should find another way to get painted stuff on the table
As for plastic over metal Im an Infinity player and yer it takes some work to build the metal minis but there latest ones are so much better than the old ones to build and i have not see any plastics that can come close to what they are doing for detail one piece minis are good but you get a compromise over the pose in order to be able to mold them in one piece
plastics over metal everyday.
Great show and Happy Sunday!
Will have to keep an eye out for the Blood and Plunder kickstarter
Congratulations @warzan in fessing up to your inner self and removing the burden of painting from your life. There is nothing more oppressive than persisting with a responsibility from which causes you frustration. I hope it feels like a weight off your mind!
And let’s be honest, the community will be better served by your exploration of games, and bringing unique content, than it will by you being locked away with a paintbrush!
The perfect Sunday as always!
I can use the texts of the New Testament, amongst others, to try and reconstruct the earliest Christian communities. What I can’t do is tell you whether Jesus was or was not divine, or was or was not resurrected. That’s not evidence-based, it’s faith-based. There will be historians who do believe it, but they believe it as Christians and not as historians. As an historian I can’t speak to an advanced civilisation we have no evidence for. It’s not that I say it never happened, it’s just that it’s literally not historical. If we turn up physical remains it enters the realm of archaeology, if we turn up writings as well it enters the realm of history. The impact of melting ice sheets or comet impacts isn’t either. I guess it’s probably geology. Without physical or written remains then it’s pure speculation, and it can’t be dealt with by history.
Does other cultures writing about them count as evidence? (Plato, Sumerians that kind of thing)
I just wonder what shape evidence takes and is it really black and white?
From memory as mentioned most cultures have some sort of flood story from Gilgamesh to the Hindi religion most seem to happen when their society is perceived to be failing and a new start rebirth of the civilisation is thought to be required
Again from memory in the earliest versions of the Noah story only pairs of holy animals ( those used for sacrifice) were taken on to the ark
i know what you mean warren – my status
painted approx 200
unpainted (don`t know exactly) i guess more than 1000
so i am looking forward on the possibilities you discover to get my minis painted in cheap way
…
but….is there hope
For most minies I massively prefer metal/resin over plastic. I like the weight and the detail, but most importantly that there’s not much building involved. It’s not so much about the options with plastics, but just the whole hassle with finding the right pieces from the sprue, clipping, cleaning, gluing, posing etc… The absolute worst thing in the hobby for me is trying to position arms to hold a rifle.
As painting goes, I’m the opposite of Ben, metal figures I paint tend to end up much nicer than plastics. Especially faces. I almost never have problems with chipping, proper priming and varnishing takes care of that. Plastic is of course great for tanks, spaceships and other like. I recently put together some Dropfleet resin kits and boy did I wish they were plastics!
The one piece Blood & Plunder models really tempt me. The sculpted bases are nice, I like the low profile and the smaller footprint. I guess the models are designed so that they’re balanced to avoid them tipping over even with the smaller base size?
I may have missed it, but has the Salute 2017 prize been done yet.
No not yet. Couple of weeks yet they were saying on today’s XBLS
Great show guys warren I use dragon painting service on ebay
http://stores.ebay.com.au/Wargame-Painting-Store
@warzan This is a great little book on the crusades. Highly recommended by me
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Crusades-War-Holy-Land/dp/1849836884/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1494748571&sr=1-1&keywords=the+crusades
Ordered! Thanks mate
Given all the SAGA currently going in on BoW Towers, it might be worth getting your Crusader fix there.
I think @avernos has plans for doing it in 15mm
great book – met Thomas Asbridge once, he’s friends with my old lecturer Andrew Jotischky. Another good book worth looking at: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Crusading-Crusader-States-Recovering-Past/dp/0582418518
Thanks for recommending this book- ordered it as well 😉
Hearing that Blood and Plunder will move the timeline is a plus for me. Taking games to the great white north or even closer to a period of history that ties directly to the history of the human civilization of this area is great. Looking forward to the videos to come about this game. Especially the ship to ship fighting.
haha morning guys.
Watching this morning I have just realised how much has changed. I remember Warren years ago saying for him it was Fantasy and Sci-Fi and had no real interest in Historical gaming. How things have changed and to be honest I have gone through exactly the same so I have gotten older don’t get me wrong I’m still interested in them games such as Infinity and Frostgrave but historical games have definitely come to the for front Bolt Action, Saga Flames of War etc. Its like looking in a mirror haha.
As for giving up on the painting side it’s the part I love I don’t get much chance for playing games these days but as you said a while back that’s my hobby your hobby may be different. that’s how this thing works haha
Anyway have a good Sunday guys.
Welcome to the club Warren.
One of us, one of us, one of us….
I have seen the minis for Blood & Plunder live last week on Ad Arma Con in Speyer/Germany. Awesome minis and great looking game.
Totally get where you’re coming from with painting figures. I used to paint them for a living a long time ago, totally killed that side of the hobby for me. I recently got myself a couple of packs of Skaven. I’ve got them based and undercoated, but they are still on the shelf looking at me accusingly…
@warzan Your hobby is your hobby. So plunder e-bay and chain John to a paint station 🙂
The romans built roads leading straight from one city to an other (or Rome)
Looking at the roadmaps in Ireland you can see that the romans never went there.
Just an other aspect of what history can tell us.
metals over plastics any day. Not may company’s can pull off the detail that well, the detail ends up “blurred”.
I have an entire bolt action commando army i keep putting off just because they are plastic
Man, you haven’t seen the recent releases from Victrix, have you..?!
Hands down, at least as crisp as any metals!
You guys should start using that dancing Lloyd clip every time you announce prizes.
absolutely – it’s genius!
I’d put money on @caesar doing a Valhalla as the next strip though based the weekender! 🙂
How much?
Another great period emerging from the dark ages is the era of the Khan. Dan Carlin has a great podcast series on this period.

Fireforge miniatures have a range to support it!
An interesting read about the discovery of the Americas is 1421 The Year China Discovered America
https://www.amazon.com/1421-Year-China-Discovered-America/dp/0061564893
Blood and Plunder ships are sooooo good, but so spendy….
Just realised I’m two weeks behind because of the house move. So I have last weekends show plus this weekends episodes to catch up on, its going to be a day of weekenders.
In regards to the sagas they where not exclusively written by the Christians, the most unbiased ones where written by Muslim academics of the day. And paint a rather different picture of their day to life and the raids.
More I see of blood and plunder the more it’s drawing me in. I’m really looking forward to seeing the upcoming videos you guys put up about it.
@warzan theres a fascinating book (not that long) of a journal by a muslim called ibn fadlan who journeyed north to write down what he found, his writings about kievian rus (vikings around the volga) are a fascinating insight into some of their cultural aspects
Definately check him out for an islamic middle east commentary on the men from the north!
And of course became the 13th warrior 🙂
I know nothing about that zombie game, but I saw those zombie cubes and instantly thought, “I want!”
Great video as always. Living the Blood and Plunder content. Can’t wait to see the videos over the coming weeks!
@warzan, it is, and always has been, about the hobby. I love painting and modeling and play very few games. I have a couple dozen factions and small armies that will never see a table top because I wanted to build and paint them. There is no shame in embracing the hobby that you want to be part of. There are a lot of advocates of the idea that to be a gamer, you have to do everything from modeling, painting, terrain making and playing. That’s great for people who take that holistic approach, but there is no hard and fast parameters for what defines a gamer and how your personal interests and abilities align with those.
I hear a lot pf jokes along the lines of, Warren has a new war band, someone tell John to get to work. While amusing, that happens a lot in the community. Many people aren’t interested or aren’t as accomplished in every aspect of gaming, but there is no shame to be had from that. Work on the parts of the hobby that excite you. Find alternatives for the parts that don’t, but I hope you don’t feel resigned to the idea that just because you don’t do everything doesn’t make you any less of an awesome gamer.
Of course, this idea isn’t specific to anyone. BoW is full of talented people who create a fantastic community of inclusiveness. This is why we have different forums, different hubs, different aspects for different people. Gaming isn’t how well you paint. Gaming isn’t how well you make foam rocks. Gaming isn’t how well you set up your shield wall or position a tank. Gaming is, and always has been, about having a laugh, getting excited and creating experiences. Go forth and game in whatever manner you choose, even if that only involves sitting around a table, talking about rowing a longboat over a cup of tea.
Hobby is about doing the things you enjoy, if you don;t enjoy painting, then don’t paint.
As anyone who has seen my various attempts recorded in the WAYPN thread and other areas of the site will know, I’m not the best of painters either, but I enjoy it. I find the process relaxing, and these days I try to do as much with an airbrush as possible because I fond that easiest.
In fact, as sad as my hobby output has been this year, although I managed one whole mini over hobby night live, I have actually done more painting than playing so far in 2017, as I struggle to find time.
I don;t think Warren is an outlier either, in fact i would say that the fact the minis come prepainted has helped X Wing’s popularity, especially in the initial launch period.
Joy within our hobby time @nogginthenog – that’s it exactly. Even if there are some phases of your live you can’t dedicate much energy and time to it, be happy when acctually painting or playing.
I agree, X-Wing is great!
Blood and Plunder looks the dog’s. Never thought I’d be tempted by another historical period, but this one is calling to me for some reason.
Just recently returned to wargaming after a almost 20 year hiatus and loving playing Bolt action and Saga. I think Blood and Plunder just made it on to the list of “games I need in my life”
Love the weekender!!
Happy Sunday!! Awesome show again guys, thanks for the golden button, I definitely dont mind admitting i did the jammy dance!!
Personally i live plastic minis as it allows me to have a few different modelling options, however. The metals have so much details and i think in a game of this size where you dont need many it works quite well. Bringing me into blood and plunder i love the look of the unalligned, that would 100% be the faction for me!!
We have a viking festival down the road from me near huntingdon. I went last year and it was awesome. Definitely going again this year even if its just for the mead!!
I still enjoy painting but finding the time at the moment is a real problem, I’m also nearly always distracted by the latest shiny thing so finishing stuff off for me is something that never gets done. I will be looking out for what you find out about painting services and pre paints.
Late night. Bit queezy. Not sure I can cope with more chubby knees. 🙂
Metal mini’s = one piece mini’s? I think you have to talk to Corvus Belli about that.
I think these are actually two different comparisons mixed up: One piece / pre-built vs. sprues with parts. And metal vs. plastic. When the models are very characterful (Mythic Battles for example) I don’t mind having them pre-built. But for models with variations (Bolt Action, Warhammer) I prefer to build and customize models myself.
I also enjoy customizing mini’s a lot. For that I highly prefer plastic (and cardboard) over metal and resin. It’s just a lot easier to work with.
@warzan Don’t think you’d have to give up painting completely. You can get quite decent results with colored spray cans and proper use of directional lighting effects using these spray cans. I base painted all my Dreadball teams this way to quickly differentiate them. Each team has a different color scheme and somewhat different lighting effect.
Mine are still waiting to be detailed, but you could be quickly done with it dipping them and leaving it at that. Or else you could get your John out to do some highlighting/detailing.
This method works best on bigger, blocky models, like Dreadball teams, Space Marines etc. It’s probably less useful for a Napoleonics force with their intricately colored uniforms.
Nice to end the show with another attempt at Breaking Ben. 🙂
I agree. If it’s a multi part sculpt, plastic is infinitely preferable in my opinion. If it’s a one piece, metal is the way to go.
Happy sunday!
I used to be in the plastic camp. But these days I prefer smaller games and metal. I have started to prefer metal because I noticed that there are usually a fair amount of sculpts in metal in most series. As a result there are relatively few duplications in smaller games. The heft, often more natural poses and ease to get to the painting stage are all boons for me these days.
I did not know about Blood and Plunder before the Island built but it looks very very interesting, especially with the dutch joining the fray :D. I have a few 3d print files for caribbean terrain like a house, 50cm long frigate and a vauban fortress with bartizans which will be very suitable for this game. Damn you guys! I had promised myself to stay rooted hobby-wise in WW2 Europe for at least a year!
Cheers,
you guys……im sat here surrounded by waffen ss painting away ….rains dropping gently in the background….alls peaceful in my world as i listern to you talking pirates getting my mind in a turmoil of should i get pirates or have i too much other stuff to do yet……i look down not even remembering doing it to find …….my officers got a eye patch…….cheers guys now doing some miniature stripping
Eyepatches are seen to this day. So I would leave it be
Plastics:
* feel crisper & sharper in detail
* are (way) easier to glue
* much easier to alter
* lighter, so increase your options with mounting options etc.
I don’t mind metals if they already do what I want them to (e.g. a lot of the Frostgrave models are just fine for what I want) but I won’t touch multi-part metals any more.
Thanks guy for another fun and informative show. on a note about Stone Hendge there is a book by a sci-fi author called Harry Harrison. one of his many books was call “Stonehendge Where Atlantis Fell.” This book is highly recommended and first came out in the early 90’s so don’t if it’s still in print but well worth a read. I can’t remember her name but wasn’t there a famous Irish pirate who who was feared by many but respected by her all male crew?
Plastic over metal for me, especially armies due to cost and weight.
Also, no more live Twitch on the front page please, it slows down the page loading time no end.
Great show and another happy sunday!
Another fact that happened in the Viking Age was womens rights. See, the viking woman had to manage the farm when the husband went away on the seasonal raids. To manage a farm you had to know about production, management and to make decisions…and that led to make the viking wife a very efficient asset and one that could govern the farm in the husbands absense. We have a saying: Behind every great man stands a great woman!
In the northern countries the viking wife had the rights to the property and if the man died on a raid, she would be the sole owner of the farm…she could take another man for husband later on.
The greatest riches was not gold pillaged from foreign contries or christian monestries but it was to own land. Land and thralls. Which led to collonisation of Iceland, Greenland and further abroad.
Harold Bluetooth (Harald Blåtand) was the first danish king to be babtized into christianity (White Christ) and decreed that all danes should turn from their pagan gods and worship the new Christ. Harold was politically aware from his trips to central Europe that the Christian Church was a force to be reconed with and it was a way of securing his kingdom by not giving his southern kings an excuse to invade Denmark as they would then kill fellow christians. Wise man!
That was common in the ancient world also.
Although I actually like painting minis, usually listening to a good audio book, I fully understand Warren’s decision to give it up. The hobby is about having fun, and if that’s actually taking it away from your enjoying it,then it’s time to find alternative methods. Might be an interesting project for you too show us how you get on.
On the note of plastic vs metal minis (multi part and one piece).
It depends on the company that it is from and the mini itself. I have seen plastic/metal minis that look fantastic and others that look like S***.
An other factor for me is weight, plastic minis weigh a lot less. If you have to transport a full Astra Militarum army (100+ models not including tanks), I am glad that they are plastic.
Multi part models can give more options for positioning and elaborate clothing but if you want to paint it well, you have to paint in sub assemblies to get everywhere (in my case anyway). So I can’t use it until it is painted.
On the point of painting. I like painting but with so much stuff coming out I can’t keep up. So I like being able to use models even if they aren’t painted yet and I am not shy of games with pre-painted models if they look good.
On the question of metal or plastic, I prefer metal though plastic minis do have the advantage of being easy to convert.
Back into 2010 I was demoing Army Painter Dip at a show with Sheffield Irregulars and I got into this conversation with a chap, who said he didn’t buy metal because of paint chipping. I told him about using Dip, but he wasn’t convinced so I picked up a metal mini I had coated in dip the day before and chucked across the room. He looked at me horrified until I fetched the mini and showed him there were no chips in it
Really cool show guys. Thanks
Happy sunday from Michigan, Love plastic over metal
I’ve always been put off by metal miniatures. To the point where I’d only invest in games/factions where I could do an all plastic force.
That’s purely down to my experience with trying to assemble multi-part metal models though. I hate working with super glue, don’t want to have to pin or greenstuff. If sculpts are multi-part, I’d much rather they be in plastic.
However, with single piece sculpts, I have no issue with metals at all. I wouldn’t have looked twice at blood and plunder until seeing these videos and realising they are single piece sculpts, with integral scenic bases to boot.
I love the idea of skirmishing on land, ship to ship, ship to land, boarding actions, broadsides with cannon, all on the same table in 28mm.
I’m going to get some activator for the next time I assemble metal or resin with super glue – the drying is either instant or takes ages, but it looked easy on the hobbylab / vlog that went out last week.
I really know what you are talking about @warzan . Nowadays my hobby time is very limited due to work and familiy. So I don’t have as much time as needed for painting. But I do not have the money to use a painting service either. Which left me with compromise. I said to myself my armies have to be at least primed and/or basecoated. So I don’t play with dull grey somethings. It makes a huge difference on the table.
On the multi part or single cast thing I prefer the multi part plastics. Why? I hate repeating gestures in my Armies. I have a Wood Elves army where are only 3 different models of Rangers. But when your unit size exceeds this number it looks weared. So I repositioned one and changed Weapons on the other two to get 6 slightly different looking models. But if you get multi part kits from the start you can do these adjustments beforehand and don’t have to worry about screwing everything by accidently snipping off a part you wanted to keep.
@ Blood & Plunder: I’m really looking forward to your battle reports. The table Lloyd and John build looked really sweet and the miniatures and ships the guys brought with them were sweet as well. The setting is also very interessting and something different to what nomally comes along.
Blood & Plunder looks really great!
I’m old school. Really prefer metal.
Blood & plunder sounds interesting and very cool that they are going to bring some Dutch forces to kickstarter
The one piece miniatures are nice and even if I enjoy building my minis, in most games I play, there is not much possibility to vary the poses. If the poses of one piece miniatures look natural and not flat, I really like them as in my gaming group some players struggle to build and paint their stuff. With one piece figures I don’t have to fight armless onelegged Billy with his not yet build gatling gun..
Great show guys. Loved the Viking discussion. Especially now since Warren has gotten me watching all the back seasons. I must say that do like the single piece minis. I did some from Hasslefree and Lead Adventure for This Is Not A Test and it was nice to just prep and paint. Blood and Plunder has my interest with the talk of moving more into the 18th century.
Happy Sunday!
Metal vs Plastic – I’m very much in the same boat as Ben in that I don’t like/enjoy painting metal minis any more. In terms of materials my preference is resin>plastic>metal. Having grown up with metal minis from the early 90’s, I found myself incredibly relieved when GW released their first mainstream plastic kits to replace metal squads.
This blood and plounder ships look great!
Blood and Plunder looks great!
I don’t have a lot of time anymore either. That’s one of the reasons why I started collecting 15mm armies. They are almost all one piece and much much quicker to paint. It feels like I’m getting something done again. I’m currently working on a Halo ground battle army and loving it again.
Oh iam so hyped for Blood & Plunder! Everything looks so amazing, the models, the ships and the gaming table from BoW of course to!
Can’t wait to get my hands on this stuff and iam looking forward to their Kickstarter later this year :)!
Yeah i would love to see some conquistadors fighting over a golden statue with some indios.
Awsome show Guy’s
warren, you should try hobby night it’s a 4 hours fun live show that will help you get in some painting done. 😉
Historical / Archeological shows are also great as a backdrop to getting some hobby done.
Perhaps reading less papers will give you more time to paint @warzan
Blood and plunder? Yes please.
Happy Sunday! Blood & Plunder looks amazing. Gotta love Pirates!!!
Good show guys! I agree with the issue that Bolt Action plastics have. I had no idea what to build, ended up looking at the rules and eventually copied an army list Warlord had online.
Blood and Blunder looks like a really neat game.
Opppps look at that I created a new game: LOL
correction Blood and Plunder!!!!!! Looks Awesome!!!!
Metal v Plastic, I see it as win-win.
why the need to put yourself in a box Warren mate. if you don’t feel like painting, don’t paint. no need to say i’m done with painting full stop. why limit yourself and your potential future experiences by putting up an imaginary barrier. who knows which way the wind will blow next week , next year , next decade. attachment and aversion are trouble causes both.
multi part plastics vs single piece metals is an odd comparison.
multi part over single piece sculpt all day long when it comes to quality, as it stands. single piece sculpts , as good as they have become, tend to be flat in comparison to what can be achieved with multipart sculpts. dynamic poses tend ether not to happen or are unnatural in there composition by comparison. things like hips, shoulders and legs in single piece sculpts that are running are a good example of the restrictions at present. they can look great as long as they keep the posture fairly simple.
metal over plastics is a tougher call. it depends on the style. my KD:M plastics or my infinity metals ? both are stunning. generally i’d say metal holds detail better but you can get fantastic results with ether in the right hands. while we’re at it the KD:M resins are better still. I do love the reassuring heft of metal miniatures though.
as for building the miniatures, it’s my least favourite part of the hobby. I much prefer painting to modelling. that being said a lot of these new CAD miniatures go together like a dream, old infinity miniatures can be a nightmare, the new ones go together beautifully.
you certainly wouldn’t see that Dante’s inferno boatman in single piece anything, that thing is like an oil painting.
maybe the day we can have our cake and eat it isn’t too far away.
blood and plunder looks great and strikes a good balance by having single piece miniature in metal. I can see how it started this debate.
Arrr great show mate!!!! Hoping to win.
It has to be plastics every time, just for the versatility!
Happy Sunday. I was looking forward to the interview with the guys from B&P, I cannot say I’m disappointed on the news. Ive never roleplayed before, but my friends have finally convinced me to get stuck in and next week I’ll be thrown in the deep end with the French Indian War RPG, so hearing that this will be brought to the B&P world brings me so much joy as its a time period Im fascinated by. (Big fan of The Last of the Mohicans) Actually I’m a big fan of the age of black powder so I’m pretty sold on anything and B&P has me hooked.
Im so glad they will expand on this game and I kind of hope there future plan to ease in larger multiplayer games, sure you can still work on the initiative basis on the cards between four, but it would be great for rules to work on a smoother 4 player game. Cant wait to see future models and ships, I’m so sold on the Dutch faction.
Also in true BoW fashion, I game hacked B&P inadvertently after painting some models. On desk backlog I had my B&P English with my boat, but I’m also working on my Walking dead. To clear space to paint I put some zombie on the deck and once Id finish painting I looked at the ship where I had inadvertently created a zombie outbreak battle on the deck of a frigate. This got my brain ticking and 10 minutes later, squads of buccaneers were holding of waves of zombies in a short game mixing the dice from both games. Rolling the red dice from WD per musket shot into a zombie made perfect sense, a line of 8 matchlocks and only a couple of head shots but the rest knocked made for great atmosphere. Could the men reload in time before those that were not killed got back up and pressed on? This made a fun dynamic. Total nonsense obviously, but i had a blast firing cannons and muskets into waves of zombies.
I cant speak highly enough about B&P, the models and the ships are just lovely and it sounds as though he future is bright. Just have my wallet as I want all their products.
Blood and Plunder looks like an awesome game!!
Thanks for the nice show guys! I wish there was more time to dicuss theories in historical science and their evidence. This was rellay interesting.
@spaderfish
One piece castings are totally o.k. Just take a look at the range of perry miniatures or great war miniatures. They have a huge amount of one piece castings and they look great. And because they have sculpted so much different poses, there is plenty of variaty in the units.
And blood and plunder looks awesome!!!
No canyons were ever formed overnight. A geologist can explain to why that is impossible
Plastic over metal for me. I understand the work assembling plastic minis is sometimes extreme. But this is a hobby. Part of the allure (for me) is the hobby part. If you think about the time you spend in your hobby, you will find gaming is 3 down the list. First is painting, assembling and prepping, second is researching your factions and third is actually GAMING your hobby. So when you decided to start playing any new game. Assembling plastic models is part of the whole fun of choosing your new game in the first place (for me anyway). I LIKE researching which gun(s) I should choose, which head to go with etc etc. Its all part of the experience.
Plastic you can make your own. Metal cuts down the hobby time, I agree, but sometimes I don’t want my hobby time cut down. I know I might work 40-50 hours a month in my hobby, and I bet 6 of those (at most) is gaming. The rest is prepping, researching, painting, assembling. If I did not want that, I could easily choose a hobby that was not so intensive of my time. I could always choose a miniature game that has prepainted minis (X wing etc)
Thanks
Blood and Plunder was deffiently worth backing. I am glad I did and hope to be able to back the new kickstarter coming up soon.
I lived in the Caribbean for a few years in the Dominican Republic. I’d love to build a Taino native force to represent the ancestors of my Dominican brothers and sisters.
The new Native Caribbean factions are definitely inspired by Tainos, Caribes and Guanahatabeyes. One of the reasons why Natives in this game are my favorites is due to the team trying to stay true to not only the physical appearance but also how it ties to their custom. If they go back in time chances of adding famous Caciques like Guamá or Hatuey who fought against the Spaniards also increase.
I am dying to play blood and plunder with my gaming group.
It really does depend on the miniature and game system when talking about plastics v metals.
Generally I think I prefer one piece metal but when it comes to something such as This Is Not a Test I prefer plastic/resin just for the customisation and character I can get out of each of my miniatures.
Blood and Plunder also really interests me, would love to win a set, at least then I have an excuse when the girlfriend discovers yet another game has creeped into my collection.
interesting facts about the vikings lost to history:
http://trib.al/Wc7iD5q
Just recently joined BoW and really enjoyed the historical discussion and non-mainstream theories…almost forgot this was a show about toy soliders.
Blood and Plunder looks great, I was following the original KS but couldn’t commit at the time. Look forward to seeing what the next one holds.
I must say that blood and plunder looks awesome. I would love to try it.
I find I have a harder time prepping metal mins. Scraping off seams with an x-acto is easier than filing off seams IMO.
First I want to say I don’t think there’s any right or wrong to plastic vs metal, one piece vs multi-part. I think it depends on the game system, the company producing them, and the individual mini. However, like everyone, I do have an opinion. 😉
I have just built and (mostly) painted my first 40K plastic box. I have to say they’re plastics are a lot better than they used to be. I started collecting GW LotR minis around the time the Two Towers came out in theaters, but stopped well before the Hobbit movies came out. That means I can see the drastic difference in quality from then to now.
First, regarding single piece vs multi-part. It’s a similar question that was asked more than a month ago…. do you prefer generic models or boutique? I understand what the guys were saying about having to know how to play in order to build some of the kits. There should be easier ways for players to get into the game, but most of us veterans really do want the choice of how to build. That’s what makes GW some of the best plastic kits out now.
I understand the appeal of the smaller bases and generic poses for something like Blood and Plunder, and other games where you have a lot of generic soldiers. I would still want something more ‘characterful’ and/or unique for commanders and heroes. The biggest issue for me is that one piece casts are, by necessity, flatter and less dynamic than multi-part. That’s independent of any issues regarding choice in building the figs mentioned above. A good example is what Steam Forged had to do to the Brewers and Masons to put them in the Kick Off! box as one piece plastics. They lost details, had to flatten poses, etc. I personally don’t enjoy painting minis with less detail, less dynamics, or less individuality.
It’s the same with the smaller bases. I understand why that works for Blood and Plunder. You want to put more units on a small space (the decks). However, the reason why a lot of the companies who produce prettier minis use larger bases is because it gives their sculptors more creative freedom. Corbus Belli is an example of that.
As for plastic vs metal, I’ve seen a lot of garbage metal minis over the years, and a lot of companies are still producing them. It’s one reason I’ve stayed away from a lot of historical games. By comparison, there are a lot of quality plastics out there now that simply weren’t available before. There are advantages to the plastics, such as how the glue fixes them, how they sit better at times and don’t break as badly from falls due to the lack of weight, They’re generally easier to store and carry, etc.
However, I play Guild Ball and Infinity, and I’ve just finished building a box of plastic Tau. My conclusion is that the best plastics I’ve worked with still don’t compare to the best metals. After working with the plastics I long to get back to my metal minis from Steam Forged and Corbus Belli! But I realize that is strictly from a painter’s perspective. I don’t mod a whole lot and it’s been years since I’ve played massive games like 40K. I’ve never played the historicals.
My only beef with what was said on the show about these things is that you lumped it all into one subject, when really, they are all different issues (parts when cast, choice in building, metal vs plastic).
I’d love to add Blood and Plunder to my collection of games to play, my shelf doesn’t have nearly enough of them 😉
I wish I could afford to have someone paint all of my unpainted minis. With that said I am starting to buy some of my minis already painted. I will probably do a mix of the two for the near future. Still waiting to play Blood and Plunder but by everything I see and hear it is an awesome system. Anxiously awaiting the BoW demos. When might we be seeing those?
The historical portion of the show was interesting as well because both the Viking and pirate histories converge in my area. I live in the Atlantic Province region of Canada. We are the very area where Vikings landed in North America, as evidenced by the archaeological dig at L’Anse aux Meadows. http://www.pc.gc.ca/en/lhn-nhs/nl/meadows
It is believed that that settlement was just one of several and that Vikings visited farther South, including the coast not far from where I live.
Regarding the history of pirates, I thought it interesting that they quickly briefly mentioned Canada, Hudson Bay, etc. I live on the Atlantic Coast, just slightly North of the U.S border, and we have quite a history of piracy. I’m not far from Oak Island, where History Channel’s “Curse of Oak Island’ is filmed. But even closer to me, in the bay of Fundy, is the Isle Haute where it is said Captain Kidd made stops to hide, and perhaps retrieve, treasure.
The river our city is on (Moncton) has had historical pirate ship sightings, and there are several pirate legends surrounding another City just West of us (Saint John, New Brunswick).
I recall from what I learned in high school (also Canada but all the way out west – B.C.) that there were (official) privateers of both French and English that harassed each others ships. Once the Americans were independent the British and Americans also employed privateers to harass each others shipping. A very interesting time period. I’ve always been interested in the early European history in North America.
On the west coast the aboriginal peoples also raided (each tribe would raid other tribes) and the best known among them is the Haida as they were probably the strongest and ended up having the largest influence on the North West coast of North America.
Pirates? ARRR! I’d like to try that.
That Blood and Plunder looks so good!!
I certainly wouldn’t feel any shame in resorting to pre-paints, @warzan – for the gamer who doesn’t have the time, energy or desire to paint minis, they are perfectly serviceable if you are prepared to dip them and give them a blast of anti-shine. For skirmish games or dungeon crawlers there are plenty of choices out there.
Alternatively if it comes to getting them painted elsewhere, I recommend this guy from our local club: http://cornishmikey-painting.webs.com/ – his prices are very affordable!
Prefer plastic over metal, especially metal minis where you are required to pin a piece.
As for painting minis, for me it comes in burst. Bought Guild kick off about 5 weeks ago, painted both teams in a week, and then haven’t touch a brush since.
Blood and plunder looks great, I just have too many games to play now as it is. I’d always be willing to play my French Napoleonics as a faction but otherwise I think I’ll have to just pass for now and see what others think of the game.
Warzan I agree that painting can become a chore. I have also picked up some minis on Ebay that were painted and then just painted the parts on them that would make them match my existing force. Sometimes that was just a little and other times it took some addional work but in the end it satisfied my need and once I made the basing the same as mine it was fine.
I do have a lot of Armies that are built and not painted yet but I look at those as Armies that I’ll play at home whenever a friend or group of friends comes by to play something.
I tend to make my painting a priority for any given army only when I have a match coming up that I want to get ready for. If I have an existing army I’ll build my force and then just have to paint those new things I want to try out. So almost all of it is built already just waiting for the call forward to battle.
Example I have an extensive German Flames of war late war force painted, probably close to 10k in points. But I recently wanted to try out my Mech Pioneer platoon that had been on the in painted shelf with about 10 other units for a club game we were holding in 60 days. So I brok out the paints and worked up the 7 Infantry stands and 7 pioneer halftracks and knocked them out before the match. The other nine units are still sitting there and I don’t mind playing them in the house if I need too.
To me it just comes down to not having the time as my day job is pretty hectic and the fact that the priority has to remain my wife and family.
Blood and Plunder looks fantastic I would love to play it and one piece minis is great!
@warzan
I will be in Coleraine 1-6 July. Would like to stop by and drop off some BBs for BOW in case someone wants to try out my filling of tanks with BBs to give them some heft. Let me know what days are best for you. I also work cheap (One or two Curlywurly’s & Icewater) if you need a hand building/painting or working on anything in the workshop.
Cheers! John
B&P is an amazingly fun game. So glad I backed the KS and will be backing the next. You guys did a smashing job on the table. Cant wait to see all the videos.
I like plastic and metal minis equally both have their merits. One piece minis are also cool saves time and trouble building them.
Happy Sunday!
I absolutely love the look of Blood & Plunder, It was the ship that jumped out at me. I am still up in the air over plastic and metal. I am fairly new to this Hobby and I find that my plastic boxes seem chaotic and to me. Where as Metal are a simple build.
I am working on my Bolt Action German Pioneers and Warlord threw me for a loop when I have to combine plastic and metal together. This was new for me and more complicated but I am progressing.
@warzan have have a wonderful time at your Viking Weekend and I hope you will be sharing pictures!!!
There is something about a metal mini that I really enjoy, I think in part when I first got ino the hobby those were the first minis i played with.
Cant wait for the Blood and Plunder week.
Blood and Plunder looks like fun!
Its always strange sitting at a table in the Trip to Jerusalem under that horn and have people swinging that ring over your head.
As a hoarder of all things, I like metal and plastic. Both have appeals. I love to build minis, models, wooden ship kits. I love to paint everything. I play with less than a quarter of the stuff that I have. I have game systems that have never been on the table. Everyone has different aspects of the hobby they love and hate. I would probably play more games if I had a gaming group interested in other games, or other gamers that I liked to play around. Enjoy what you can, when you can. And screw all haters.
Happy Sunday all. Another great show 🙂
I’ve never been that interested in pirates as a theme, but the coverage so far has definitely piqued my interest so looking forward to the coverage and seeing some games played on that lovely table.
I primarily have metal minis but see that some of my plastics are better proportioned. Maybe that isn’t always the case. I really love the Blood & Plunder minis, as they are innovative (the bases look like planking and are made to stand on their own, as well as having great poses, and the primary pirate historical consultant answers questions about them all the time on their Facebook site. I don’t know what the difference would be with plastic, but I would be concerned about plastic minis falling over more because of being too light. Can’t wait for the Blood & Plunder expansion in June!
Those metal minis look awesome! Love that the models can fit on the boats.
Blood and plunder looks amazing
Blood and Plunder actually has a very reasonable buy in cost.. pretty low. I liked that.
regarding expanding the map for blood & plunder dont forget madagscar / St. Mary’s Island. I will quote:
“Beginning in the late 17th century, well-armed bands of freebooters used the African island of Madagascar as a base of operations for raids on European and Asian shipping. According to pirate legend, some of these pioneering thieves even set up a utopian colony called Libertalia, where they mingled with native women and organized a democratic government. Libertalia is most likely a seafaring myth, but Madagascar was home to several other pirate strongholds, most famously St. Mary’s Island on the northeast coast.
In the 1690s, St. Mary’s boasted a population of around 1,500 and served as a vital supply base for pirates like Captain Kidd, Thomas Tew and Henry Every. As part of an underground shipping arrangement, many St. Mary’s-based buccaneers would attack ships carrying exotic goods from India, and local traders would then sell the booty to crooked merchants in cities like New York and Boston. Some of these raids were among the most lucrative crimes in history. For example, in 1695, Henry Every used a six-ship fleet to attack a treasure ship owned by the Great Mogul of India.”
On another subject regarding ancient civilisation’s , don’t forget southeast asia. I was a tour guide at Khao Sok which is the oldest evergreen rainforest. I will quote again fromt the national parks website:
“There is evidence of human presence on Borneo between 37 000 and 50 000 years ago. The last ice age ended about 10 000 years ago, meaning there could have been migration (by land) from Borneo to Thailand during the period of the ice age. Certainly, the habitat in both locations was similar enough to support these people. There is also biological evidence. For example, the bamboo species Gigantochloa balui is normally only found in cultivated areas on Borneo – never truly wild, yet this species has been discovered growing wild on the Thai peninsula. It is highly unlikely that this species moved between these countries without being carried by humans.”
I like a mixture of plastics and metals as long as there is not a lot of assembly of the metal figures.
The minis and boats for Blood and Plunder look really cool.
Hanging up the brushes I can completely understand, I find it very hard to get the time. It will be very interesting to see if BoW reviews painting services, cost, and quality.
Great show as usual.
As far as the plastic vs metal I guess I like the plastic a bit better when i’m wanting to be creative and build thinks differently. I am a converting monster when it comes to mini’s. I’m never more happy than when I’m modeling minis. I often lop the heads, arms & hands of even metal models to get a different look.
For me there is something therapeutic about building and creating the model. That’s more important to me than the painting part, although it is satisfying when you finish painting a unit too.
So Justin/Loyd/Warzan if you don’t want to build a force or have that army that you just couldn’t be bothered to build ship it on over to me or have it ready for me to pick up or build in July and I’ll jump all over that! Won’t cost you anything but a few curly wurly’s, ice water and some good old craic!
John
@warzan Here’s an article about the flood that probably created the prebiblical story that became the story of Noah in the Torah and the Bible.
http://www.csun.edu/~vcgeo005/Flood2.html
When it comes to metal vs. plastic minis I have to say I don’t care. If I like the sculpt I’ll paint it. Also, would it be possible to get a video of just the dancing @lloyd with the techno music?
Happy Sunday!
Love the blood and plunder miniatures, so full of character and evocative of the period.
I like Metal when the models are on the table, they are heavier and have a better tactile feel.
When it comes to painting and carting stuff around to different gaming events, Plastic wins.
Peace
I have to say over all I like building Plastic models more then any other type. It is true you can get good one piece models in Metal and resin. But for some reason I just don’t like them as much as plastic.
Great show
I’m also definitely in the multi-part plastics corner. I like my forces to be unique, something more difficult to achieve with single cast models, plastic or metal.
Why I prefer plastic over metal:
– Generally better value for money (I’m not including GW in that statement).
– Paint on metal miniatures chips.
– Fine metal parts like spears bend and if they snap, it’s a real pain in the arse to repair.
– Metal multi-part miniatures can be a nightmare to assemble, often requiring pinning. Multi-part hard plastic, a dob of glue and I have a secure bond that will last.
– Plastics are easier to repair and convert.
– Clean-up of metal minis can be more difficult, particularly when those figures require extensive filing to remove mold lines. I can’t stand having metal chips and particles all over the place (neither can the wife).
– Multi-part metals often require extensive filling of joins with modelling putty. Too time consuming for my liking if I’m not converting my figures.
– I’ve found plastics to have crisper detail. However, I am aware that there are also some plastic ranges out there that don’t have great detail. And there are some metal ranges that are quite detailed, such as the models produced for Infinity by Corvus Belli. However, generally, I’ve found plastics to be superior in detail to metals. The example I’m thinking of is Battlefront’s old metals compared to their new plastics. There is no comparison, the plastics are superior.
All of these issues aren’t worth it for me just so I can have the benefit of “heft” in my minis.
Absolutely no surprise to hear of civilisations before the ones we know. Humans left Africa tens of thousands of years ago: those people that left – and those that remained – were exactly as intelligent as we are. We spoke, we sang, we danced and we painted. The only difference between cultures before and since Sumeria is writing, so history is recorded.
Not pyramids though, just some designs get repeated because they just work.
great show I think plastic is better not as heavy and a lot less likely to brake if dropped,
Missed the Blood and Plunder KS but its now available to preorder from my local online FLGS. Gotta get some seadog action me hearties
Blood and plunder looks great. Enjoyed the pirates cove vlog very very much! Can’t wait to see the let’s play etc.
Also @warzan you might look into theory that the minoans came to Michigan 1000’s of years ago and mined Billions of tons of very pure copper to take home (or to Atlantis) to make bronze.
@warzan I believe Iridium is the comet material that you’re thinking of. It isn’t very plentiful in the Earth’s crust, but seems to be the defining element in the layers that separate and define the archeological periods.
http://www.livescience.com/39143-iridium.html
Happy sunday!
Blood & Plunder looks promissing, i’ll watch the vids when they come out.
I’m with @suetoniuspaullinus, I really prefer plastics over metal. Paint chipping is a drag, especially if you’ve put a fair amount of time on your minis. I think that the one piece Blood & Plunder minis look nice though, i just would not go “full on”, paint wise…
I am going to tackle my Haqquislam this summer, so i’ll see where this goes with “modern metal” minis, compare to the old 40k (pain in the ass to assemble Eldar War Walkers!) but, i did paint a lot of D&D one piece back in the day…
@warzan First up ye olde history. Did you know they had batteries about 2000 yrs ago, using urns with copper wire and iron rods and using lemon juice. Question thats always befuddled me is why, what did they use the batteries for?
Atlantis or whatever name its inhabitants used existed, see above modern level technology in ancient times, (not forgetting steam engines used to open temple doors). so easy to extrapolate a society more advanced than its neighbors/trading partners using devices to perform tasks rather than people.
The washed out myth, well it isn’t a myth fact is in Mediterrain has had a number of cities destroyed by volcanos and floods. Bearing in mind ye olde times a City virtually was a State so wiping out the city pretty much dead ends that society and its footprint in history.
Minion Crete was wiped out by Volcano, imagine if Rome was Pompeii and they hadn’t expanded out much suddenly Vesuvius takes out the Roman state.
Talking of Pirates Port Royale the City of Pirates literally, was wiped out by a flood, enough survivors remained and being criminals not welcome elsewhere rebuilt New Port Royale on remains of the old city.
So a city/state building up doing well than destroyed overnight has happened repeatedly every few a century or so. Krakatoa 130 years ago, tidal waves devastating city in Japan etc.
I was a plastic model guy but loving the metal of Infinity.
@warzan You covered a lot this weekender so my vote plastics, number unassembled too many but nvm.
Prepaints, nothing wrong with that imo, I play x-wing and feel no need to pick up a brush to add paint to them. Some do because they enjoy that, I’m happy to use pick and play as make my own stuff.
Sooo, Warlord do some prepainted items. Dust Premium, Havoc about 15? years ago, maybe need to check out what games use prepainted minis. You may find in checking out the prepainted gaming ranges some games not tried before like Heroclix.
54mm gaming is making a resurgence, Victrix have some 54mm Napoleonic rules, so some Brittain soldiers maybe useful, convertable to ACW I imagine as well.
Comission painting which can give you a chance to specify what scheme you want, and the look for an army.
I like both metal and plastic (and resin for that matter) ……for different reasons…..choose between the two……quite frankly no! I convert, paint and really enjoy loads of the current GW plastics. They allow for so much. Some of the other plastics out there…….warmachine’s new plastic starter boxes for instance – utter garbage. the quality of the material is just nasty.
On the metal side – I’m colelcting and painting the old Inq54 inquisitor models and they are all in the old white metal adn i love them, the detail, the feel, and especially the weight. The are meaty and you feel liek you really have something in hand. Converting metals……..no.thanks.very.much!!! that way nightmares lie!!
Then again for me, painting and modeling is the top part of the hobby for me and the part that gives me most enjoyment. the thought of buying or using prepaints just doesnt appeal at all but i understand that for some, who dont enjoy painting or dont realy care about it, they are a cracking idea a great alternative to having to sit down for houurrrrs with brush n paint and some of the prepaints these days are pretty decent quality wise.
First week as a backstager, and the whole metal vs plastic is a really interesting conversation.
While I’m happy enough with either metal or plastic, I can genuinely say I enjoy prep work / assembly with plastics, while I loathe it with metal. I can’t really say I prefer one or the other strongly after that point…
But the assembly is a huge factor for me – putting together plastics, and coming up with a “story” behind each figure / unit is a lot of fun – for example with my BA British, one unit is fresh off the boat and on patrol, so they all have the same helmets, holding their weapons at the ready etc while another unit is veteran in the midst of a fire fight, so their gear is a mixture, all figures are firing or throwing grenades etc. But with metal it’s just a grind assembling / prepping.
Blood & Plunder looks like great fun, especially now that I’ve seen how the table was put together and I’m also dead keen to give that a go!
I really don’t care about materials, plastic. metal or resin it´s all the same, the problem is in the quality of the joints between the parts. And about single cast and multi parts, usually multi parts allow more dynamic poses.
Happy sunday.
If I had to choose I would probably go with plastic(the kind you use plastic cement on) especially the way the top companies make plastic models today. But I think all the mediums have their own strengths and weaknesses and I don’t really dislike any of them. Some are more detailed others are easier to work with, one kind has more options, its just about what your looking for. So for me if its a cool quality mini or interesting game I’ll grab it, while I’m not a huge fan of restic but if its a cool enough game I can even look past that.
Blood and Plunder looks awesome, I think i’m def going to have to brake off some of my 40k 8th ed fund to grab the rules and the French starter.
Blood and plunder looks amazing great show
Mold lines on metal are just to much for me 🙂
I do really prefer plastic or resin
Blood and Plunder is a really good game. The activation mechanism keeps you engaged all the time and the possibility to play both on sea and land creates a very varied form of play. The possibilities for narrative play are endless!
I must admit, I am one of those that is not a fan of metal and I think you guys hit on the 2 main problems I have with it, they are harder to put together, and I don’t like painting them.
Really like the look of Blood and Plunder I wish i had the money at the time to get in on the Kickstarter, I will look to pick this up when it comes to retail in the UK as I think it might do well with my gaming group
Great show, would love to try blood and plunder, looks great.
I specifically enjoy PVC plastic minis, even though they can be soft on detail and mould lines can be real bad and sometime unfixable. But even with those negatives considered I think they are still unbeatable for durability and ease of painting. Metal has better detail, but with assembly, pinning, basing and so forth and STILL having to worry about it being knocked off the table just doesn’t seem to be worth the hassle for a gaming piece. Display piece sure; just not a regularly used gaming piece. As for harder plastics like GW’s, I think they are easier to assemble then metal miniatures, but with all the spindly things people like to make with them i worry about them breaking just by picking them up. Like a model airplane, it can be great to look at, but you don’t want to play with it.
I guess I am a bit biased since I mostly play miniature based board games as opposed to out and out miniature games, but I still think I would prefer plastic, which is yet another reason I look forward to CMON’s A Song of Ice and Fire. If it wasn’t for that I might probably throw down on FFG’s Runewars since their minis also look fantastic.
metal or plastic … i’ll take resin every time! lol.
the hobby for me comes in building and converting – painting and playing are very much secondary – but if im notplaying a game, im not invested enough build or paint minis just for the sake of it.
so yeah – resin and plastic purely because they are much more friendly than metal when it comes to conversion. Also, like Ben said – I dont really enjoy painting metal – there is something of a tactile difference in how it paints.
really enjoyed the format of the show again – and hour and a half of you guys chatting about hobby and the ideas surrounding it all. shows like this one are exactly why i subscribe
i was quite impressed that there were a good few innuendo moments during the show that were bypassed in favour of continuing the discussion …until the end. im surprised @brennon doesnt get one of those Bingo cards from HobbyNight to mark off during each show!
Happy Monday!
This blood and plunder looks great. I sadly missed the Kickstarter… Looking forward for the themed week 😉
shiver me timbers and all that… as ex navy you simply cant beat a game with ships in it.
Woohoo!!
Been following the build up of Blood & Plunder for a while and to now have a chance to win it is awesome…. I’m actually painting up a pirate army for my LOTR at the moment so I’m loving all things pirates right now 😀
[everything crossed]
I missed the previous Blood & Plunder Kickstarter, will have to get in on the new one, sounds so good.
Really looking forward to playing B&P.
Have we had news on whether there are other factions in the blood and plunder kick-starter? I got the brigantine and some black scorpion British marines as I really wanted a royal navy feel. I heard someone mention these guys might be doing them as a faction, if so that would be awesome!
Could be a verry cool game. Blood and plunder.
Certainly go for the Dutch, when I try the game 🙂
Awesome XLBS – where can I get a the with a picture of jammy Lloyd, cause that’s just too damn cute.
@warzan I’d be happy to volunteer to paint up (some…) of your minies, but you’d be better off buying from ebay. You can get whole armies (fast) and only one way shipping. Besides shipping from Denmark is expensive as hell.
Blood and Plunder looks really awesome. Not gonna invest in it though. @brennon‘s show of Alone in saturdays weekender made med drop my money into that immediately. Who needs food anyway 🙂
Thanks guys, as always these shows brightens my day.
Please don’t underestimate good food @aurorainbag 🙂 It is essential for good painting to stay healthy. That’s why painting sessions with my friends are also great feasts as we tend to have great food alongside.
That is very true 🙂
I have some co-workers (and my boss) that I get together with and paint and have fun. And boss is always cooking us awesome dinner.
It looks like it is time for the resin pirate ship, that has been lurking somewhere at the back of the garage for 10 years, to make an appearance.
Can’t wait for more Blood and Plunder goodness!! A great show, thanks guys.
In regard the Dark Ages – initially described as that as we knew little about them, but that is now changing. And as for the Crusades, maybe you could look into ‘Crescent and Cross’ (Saga for that period) as this is a system you have some experience with and doesn’t require many models (and figures are well covered by GP, Perry’s and Fireforge at name but a few).
Plastic v metal and Painted mini’s – currently prefer plastic, though always base on washers/metal as I like the heft. No really bothered though, whatever works will do for me
Absolutely detest ‘Restic’ though – as Gollum would say;- Hates it, we does.
Enjoyed the wondering conversation, and in regard to Atlantis, it does depend on where you look. Plato mentions them, and current thought is they may have been an island near Crete that was sunk by a Volcano, though as stated that’s just one theory. Agreed, in Plato’s description, they are not that my further advanced than the nations around them, but still advanced as in culturally developed.
Did not go with the B&P KS (too many other projects), but am liking what I see, and the extended timelines (both back and forward) do interest me. A lot of these type of ‘Historical’ games being released at present are really open to ‘alternate history/fantasy’ input (Saga, etc.), which I find a good thing – you can take the Historical as far as you want, but are not directly anchored to it – if your honest, all the games we play fall into the ‘Alternate History/Fantasy (even SF Games)’ type, as they are not detailed and factually accurate recreations of a particular engagement. And I, for one, would have it no other way.
Happy… err Monday?
Plood and Blunder is looking like awesome fun. If I didn’t have so many projects on the go already I would be all over it.
Love the design of the Blood and Plunder minis, been checking out online and am so tempted to jump straight in, why is pay day only once a month!!!
I like metal or resin minis the most. I only like plastic if it’s polystyrene. All these PVC minis that are coming with Kickstarter minis-boardgames are horrible. They’re terrible to clean up, the all come warped. They don’t hold detail very well.
Plastic is great for customizing minis, but if I’m not doing that I’d rather it be resin or metal.
Sounds like Warren needs a commission painter.
Someday I will get this game, someday.
We just started a campaign of Gorkamorka so for the most part our attention is there. This works in nicely with the metal v plastic aspect of the show as for the most part all of us are converting our orks to be wysiwyg, well at least close to it anyway as we aren’t too strict about it as our games are mostly friendly. The easy with which plastic is converted is a plus in a game like this. While I would have preferred an all metal force the weapons combos just aren’t available. While I could have converted some of my metal boys it would have been much more time consuming and a slightly harder task as metal is not as easy to cut through.
That being said, I do actually prefer metal minis, weight, detail, ease of use so to speak. I think it can really be based on the situation and needs of the player and the game.
Good show as always guys.
Forgot to add, that Dante’s Inferno KS has some amazingly sculpted busts and vignettes. I have never been into that sort of thing before as I sort of feel that if I can’t play with it what’s the point???
However!! Saying that I am SERIOUSLY considering jumping all in on this as those are fantastic.
Sure I couldn’t paint them nearly as well as the ones on the page BUT I could paint them to look like stone or something resembling marble and I would be more than happy to put them on a display shelf like that.
About Warren’s Bolt Action plastics comment. I have the same frustration with not knowing what kit each soldier should be outfitted with. Especially with what position on the belt – and on what side of the body – should the various ammo pouches, canteens, etc. go. I suppose though that it’s supposed to get me to do research, but then I don’t immediately satisfy my urge to build my toys.
I love plastics over metal mainly due to how much easier it is to create variation between miniatures. However If i want character models I don’t mind metals but would definitely prefer resins. However for blood and plunder I lover the look of all the miniatures they look like fun to paint!!
Whuhuu! My toes made it XLBS ! Don’t worry @lloyd Ive keep my feet on the floor and not on the table 🙂 You hobby weekend really inspired me to get my ork force going.
So plastic or metal.. im bad at assembling the metal mini’s, but i have no problem with painting them. So i would prefer them to be a single cast.
The blood and plunder ships looks amazing! I really like the figures, and the game sounds like a lot of fun too. I like the card mechanic, always good with some new way to play tabletop games.
@warzan you should enjoy the hobby the you want. Some times you may feel like painting again someday. Im sure you will find some cool painted vikings. One of my favorite of the viking kings was Svend Tveskæg or as the english translater says Sweyn Forkbeard. He was the son of Harald Bluetooth.
About the vikings writings, they did write a little, but it was more about big events, like the Jelling stone we have in Denmark, it tells it was Harold Bluetooth who made the Danish vikings follow the christian faith.
But Jesus have already been among the viking gods for some time at this time. It was not the Jesus we know today. They saw him as a general of an army of angels. And he existed among the other gods like Tyr, Thor, Frej and so on.
@warzan a little controversial but you might also enjoy the Crusades narated by Terry Jones of Monty Python fame.
I find him to be a good non-historian historian – but his show / books are married to one point of view
Okey dokey you have persuaded me to watch Black Sails on Amazon Prime!
Metal or plastic is a difficult one to decide.
I prefer metal over plastics as I find cleaning mold-lines off of plastic minis a major pain.
I use a few resins but I am always dubious about the strength of resin as I have had a few resin minis break too easily.
Yarrr? 🙂
I used plastic parts to modify metal miniatures for years. For instance most of my Saga warband (Viking or Jomsviking) is metal frames with plastic heads and weapons, mixed with some all plastic and some all metal models. For Blood and Plunder I am looking at some of the Warlord Pike and Shoote for modifications. Heck some of the Pike and Shoote even made it on to a few of my Infinity models.
Blood and Plunder looks like fun!
This game looks fun!
Thanks for giving us the chance to win! I’m dying to play Blood and Plunder!!
Blood and plunder looks so good, I’m desperate to try it out!
ok, this pirate game looks really good.
Really interesting discussion about vikings and middle east. Keep it up!
The quality of plastic minis has come on in leaps and bounds since I joined the hobby. Sadly they no longer seem to be a cheaper alternative. I will always prefer the weight of a metal mini over plastic but converting plastic is so much easier.
In true pirate fashion, Blood & Plunder wants to take all of my money.
Really regret not boarding the Blood and Plunder ship before!
Hey guys,
How about we actually put Blood & Thunder under a stress test in the tropic?, where there were actually pirates and we still have to deal with mosquitos, sharks, alligators and snakes all while enjoying some rum (Zacapa or Flor de Caña).
I´ll be waiting for that sweet prize on my comfy cotton hammock
Metal versus plastic minis?
Metal – Infinity models are a pain to put together at times. Super glue activator spray really helps, but even so, it can be rough especially on new comers to the hobby.
Metal – The single piece metal miniature can often have beautiful detail and saves on the time and effort of building your miniature. If building is your least favourite part of the hobby and your game doesn’t lend it self to conversions then metal can be a cheap and simple option. The heft of a metal miniature does make it feel like you are playing a war game rather than a board game. We are considered by those that are yet to be inducted in our world to be adults playing with toys, so anything that makes the game feel less childish can make us adults feel less conscious / foolish for being in this hobby.
Plastic – Not all plastic models are simple to put together. In my experience Wargames Factory miniatures either have poor or non-existent instructions or just don’t seem to be designed with a novice miniature builder in mind. It is easier to convert with plastic kits because a bit of easy cutting and green stuff allow you to be very creative. The potential for variety of poses certainly seems to be on the side of making with plastic.
Plastic – Though it feels like plastic can be the cheaper option, if you factor in the time it can take to piece together a multi part, multi pose plastic kit of soldiers it can be time consuming to work strictly in plastic.
If you buy metal minis from the suppliers of a specific game then the unit composition once painted will probably be ready to slot immediately into the game. A plastic kit is often created for variety and options in mind which actually requires a better knowledge of the rules. You may be required to do some sums and army list building before creating a unit of plastic miniatures in case the rules won’t actually allow you to field your built miniatures.
When asked how to get into Saga cheaply by a someone on my Saga Facebook page I made some of the points raised above, rather than just talking about the cheapest plastic multi part box set and what sites have the best sales on for those boxes.
I hope Warren enjoys his journey into not painting and that his quest to find nicely painted miniatures to play with does throw up some bargains and ways around paying a fortune to play his favourite games.
The Blood and Plunder game looks beautiful.
My favourite Commodore Amiga game of all time was Microsoft Pirates (Now available in Steam as Sid Meier’s Pirates! Gold Plus – Classic). Since that time in my preteens (long before Pirates of the Caribbean movies) I have been fascinated by pirates and the history of the age of sail. Treasure Island with Robert Newton as Long John Silver was one of my favourite summer holiday movies as a kid. I really enjoyed a biography on Lord Thomas Cochrane who many fictional naval heroes like Hornblower have been partially based on. The Black Flag assassin’s creed game is probably my favourite in the ever growing franchise and Black Sails has proved to be a great TV series. Now that I love and adore table top war gaming Blood and Plunder seems like a really cool way to bring all that emersion and nostalgia forward into my gaming and hobby today. The upcoming series of videos on this game should be great and I’m really looking forward to seeing the pirates cove gaming table come to life and show off it’s modular qualities as the series unfolds.
Micropose not Microsoft – spend many hours/days in front of that on the C64
Nothing worse than an inaccurate nerd. I shouldn’t have made a mistake like that. Lol. My love for the game is noted diminished, even if my memory is failing me.
I also loved Sensible World of Soccer. Happy memories. 🙂
Wow that’s a lot of comments! I read a book about Gobekli Tepe by Andrew Collins last year and it’s fascinating stuff! There is a bunch of meteor showers that hit Earth every year as the passage of the Earth’s orbit brings us back around into the debris fields left from various comet impacts or near misses. I can’t remember which one, maybe the Leonids, anyway the point is that one of these meteor showers could well be the remains of the comet that impacted 12-13000 years ago. I believe the first impact (caused by a ‘near miss’ that broke up the comet) may have started the younger dryas period and then a few thousand years later another chunk impacted and finished the younger dryas period and the end of the last (mini?) ice age! Which would probably have been around the time of the magical Graham Hancock date of 10,500 BC!
Or it’s all bollocks! But it’s a damned good ride!
Great shows this weekend guys.
Happy monday ….. doesn’t sound as nice but great show as always guys
Happy Sunday.
I have to say I’m becoming the exact opposite of Warzan. I’m finding much more happiness building and painting rather than playing.
Also I find metal minis annoying to paint much like Lloyd. Too heavy and easy to chip. I drop my minis enough that I don’t want a metal mini smashing my terrain. LOL
Hey @warzan, I think we must be going through miniature painting crisis together. I am afflicted with shiny syndrome, and this has duly led to a huge swathe of unpainted minis and with tonnes more on the way. So I took the plunge and have ordered some Eldar through a painting service so I can actually have a game with the family Space Marine v Eldar. My Space Marines have taken 2 years to paint and collect and I just cant wait that long for Eldar.
However I still love painting so am working on .. drum roll… Templar’s for Saga Crescent and Cross… plus some walking Dead and anything else that takes my fancy. So knowing the pressure is off so to speak I have renewed energy for painting.. just a few at a time to compliment whats arriving soon.
I really need to get some pirate ships…
I love both plastic and metal – you can get used to working on both.
Although you can also find bad products in both too
Umm’d and ahh’d about jumping on the Kickstarter but just couldn’t justify at the time. Glad to see its out there now and im feeling the urge after the epic table build!
I generally prefer plastic for ease of assembly, but the B&P one piece metal minis look sweet. Didn’t jump in for the first B&P KS, might have to have a really good look at round 2 though.
Cant wait to see the blood and plunder lets plays to see it in action. @warzan Terry Jones of Monty Python fame released a book showing the Romans to be less than civilised and if I remember it correctly escentially goes on to say all the “good” bits we know of them, they pinched from other lands… might be of interest if you’re looking at alternate views on history

As a new dad with sooo little time for anything but poopy nappies and an emotional wife to cope with, one piece minis, low model count games are right up there to enable me to get my tabletop fix. I need streamlined playtime, and stress free builds.
Blood and plunder gives me that streamlined play, with ace story telling, alongside bushido and guildball are to me the pinnacle of my games at the moment.
If nappies weren’t so expensive I’d pay for someone to paint my minis for me, I’m not a great painter but that being said, I think if you can create something that you are personally happy with (trying not to compare it to the internet) that’s good for me.
Great vid again guys. really looking forward to some more Blood and Plunder video’s.
Great show, thanks. I finally got through the last of it today as RL keeps interfering.
Metal vs Plastics – I have plenty of plastics in my collection but I do prefer metal to them generally but that is because there are more sculpts from my favoured designers in metal than in plastic.
Thanks for mentioning Gobekli Tepe. This is a really fascinating area of research that could see us gaining valuable insights into much earlier periods of our archaeology than we have previously been able to analyse in much depth.
As redben mentions much earlier in these comments, History isn’t able to comment on such things as it is bound by the constraints of evidence and as yet there isn’t any corroborating writing that covers the use and purposes of this site. It doesn’t mean that it doesn’t fit into the story of mankind, just that we can’t analyse it in the same way as sites that have other sources that help us to understand them. This leaves the field clear for those with interesting theories like Graham Hancock and who is to say he is wrong. From the perspective of an historian he has placed the cart before the horse a bit by having a theory which he is then fitting the scant available evidence to. Normally you would take all the evidence and work out what theory it allows, perhaps having to include or consider things that don’t fit neatly into the narrative you might want to construct. Now for the era in focus some 12,500 years ago there isn’t much ‘traditional’ evidence so who’s to say his method isn’t the correct one? Whatever you might think of the veracity of his methods the story he comes up with is entertaining and at times compelling. It certainly poses some significant questions that to traditional academic approaches struggle with and may well have provided valuable insights that hep our understanding of Gobekli Tepe. However his theories may not survive intact were there to be a serious attempt by a significant academic institution to try to uncover the story of events on our planet at this time and what human societies were like and how they were affected by them.
Great stuff. Keep up the flow of imponderables please.
I’ve always enjoyed building minis but the more games I play the more I want one piece Models. Anything that helps get the games to the table is a win.
Got to get me some Blood and Plunder!!
On Metal V Plastic its all about the assembly. If they’re one piece, i really don’t care what its made of, but if I have to glue pieces together its plastic EVERY time! There’s nothing more frustrating or time consuming than assembling a multi part metal mini… Time to get out the pin vice and paper clips! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I think I might actually be sold on this game… gonna check out the batrep. eyeing those Spanish privateers
Blood and plunder looks aw-some. Watched the blogs on creating the table. I think Lloyd has excelled, one of his finest. I have a friend at the club I attend who paints figures for a good price. I have to say I am of an age where my hands shake and the eyes are not as good. But I will not go to him to paint my figures as I love painting them, I have accepted they are not as good as they used to be. Although my wife would like me to give up painting them as I spend a lot longer in my study painting these days. But I understand where Warren is coming from.
I’m in the plastic camp. I like the building and configuring of them and like Ben, I also find that painting the metal minis to just not work as well as the plastics – don’t know why.
But, I do miss the heft of the metal minis. They just felt more solid so I’ve got around this by filling in the the underside of bases with polyfilla. It provides the heft and lowers the centre of gravity which stops the minis falling over as much on slopes. My FoW minis, I used the polyfilla on top to model the mud of the battlefield and pushed the figures into it – looks great once it is painted up.
I’m going to side with Ben on the metal/plastic debate. There is just something about metal minis that I just hate painting wise (apart from a few exceptions, notably the Infinity metals from Corvus Belli). As to the heft, I prefer the weight of plastics for 28mm men and the like, and for heavy things (warmachines/tanks) I really like resin.
The sculpts for the Dante’s Inferno kickstarter really are stunning and timed very well. The wife and I have been discussing rebuilding/renovating the house a few years from now and one of the things we’ve agreed on is some lit display cabinets with busts, dioramas and the like that we’ve painted up. Might have to see if I can find some funds before this one finishes up.
Having just binge watched Black Sails (thanks Warren) this prize would be amazing.
Right well off to finish watching Black Sails after that. It’s a game I knew would be hard to stay away from right from the Kickstarter and it just keeps coming back. Well done guys. As always I love Warrens “this is what could have happened talks”. Keep me coming Waz
Great show!
The two player game set looks great! Id’ be tempted to choose Indians and Spanish for something different…are the Caribs going to get war canoes? Hopefully, we will see Portuguese next. Or perhaps they will head over to the Med. or Asia?!?
I’m a metal over plastics guy.
I saw Blood and Plunder when it first came out on KS but abstained cos I thought the scope of the game would be limited. And I was skint.
Looking at the stuff now, especially painted and seeing it on a well crafted gaming table makes me wish I’d signed up. Plus hearing the guys talk about extending the time period to cover different types of battles. I would love to see them extend it to cover the colonization of the Americas. British Navy. French Navy. Militia. Native warbands. Trappers. Pirates. You could fight some absolutely epic battles and add some real depth. Defiantly one to watch methinks.
blood and plunder looks sweet! would love to win that set 😀 The combination of ship and land combat sounds great.
@warzan I’m right there with you when it comes to painting figures. I once loved it, but now I have very little time and soooooo many to paint that it feels like a chore. I’m also now looking into painting services. That will free up time to actually play, and make terrain. I do still quite enjoy building terrain.
I’m really looking forward to checking out Blood and Plunder. I still have a ton of painted Chinese pirates and a little junk to sail them about in.
I have a buddy that has collected dirt/rocks/sand from battlefields all over the world and he uses it to base figures for those battles. He feels it gives them a bit more mojo!
I sense that blood and plunder is quite popular in the studio right now!
Been Interesting watch the development of the Pirate game!!
Gee, that new gent “Warren” sounds a lot more exciting than that Gerry bloke, who’d make a nuclear war sound boring (as all SAGA discussions that you guys have that effect on me-fast forward comes to mind). Although he does carry on so.
Please say that you asked the Flintlock guys how they made the textured water surfaces for their game shots.
i really like the weight of the metal minis. they almost feel more powerful in the game as well compared to the light plastic models.
Another great show. Cheers fellas. I totally get where you are coming from @warzan, painting wise. My painting skill level is nowhere near where I would like it to be and doesn’t do the mini’s justice. Unfortunately, time limitations mean I can’t see me being able to practice enough to improve and so what little time I do have, I find frustrating. P.S any chance we will see Justin’s mind getting melted soon? I love that segment.
“No-see-um’s”! Love it. They are the worst kind of biting bug!
My first XLBS show. Interesting, but I will need to check out others before continuing my trial.
Great job, guys! Love the look of the Blood and Plunder minis, ships and game!
Just out of curiosity, how much should you expect to pay a painting service for 28mm miniatures, say, like the Blood & Plunder pirates? Would you pay per miniature or per set of 5 or 10? Tabletop gaming-level quality? Maybe this was answered earlier but I didn’t look through the hundreds of comments.
3 reasons to love Firelock Games/ Blood and Plunder
1) It’s a pirate game! I don’t think I need to explain this to anyone here!
2) Single part metal minis…..awesome. I love the feel of metal figures and the single cast keeps me from going bonkers trying to assemble mulitparts. And the pose doesn’t really matter, because they are pirates! They could be in the loo and still be cool.
3) My 19 year old son said he would find time to play Blood and Plunder with me. That is the best part of all. With single cast minis and a beachfront mat and a couple of 4Ground buildings, we are up and playing!
Cheers to the guys at FireLock Games for a terrific game.
I just dug out GW”s Legends of the Old West, but now you have me thinking I need to get into Blood and Plunder. Well here’s hoping I win!
Metal for me is nostalgia as it reminds me of my first venture into miniature painting. Now i tend to go for p lastics. Single casts are appealing more and more mainly because the reasons brought up in the show, almost to many options in plastic sprues (luxury problem, but still a problem hehe)
I’m just falling so far behind watching these now 🙁
Plastic, metal, resin actually I dont really care as long of the model is good.
Blood and Plunder is looking very nice and it made me wish I had joined the KS, alas
ZOMG Blood & Plunder looks so awesome. Mrs. Starminer wants us to start that game!
Blood and pounder looks awesome, and now new huge ship, so will be amazing to try it, also a nice piece and cool minis too, with is detailed base,
about viking, theres true many movies and war and honour related image on that, i have a rpg here in spain that was developed by historians and its a compilation of knowledge from the dark age and its amazin, with great artwork and reenactment pics of groups here, its called wallhalla, for now only in spanish.
Meanwile happy gaming.
Love the look of these pirates 🙂
When and where is the winner going to be announced?
Peace
When’s the new B&P kickstarter?
Gah, how did I get so behind? I hope BoW 2.0 has some sort of playlist function so I can create a list of things I’ve missed or need to see.
