If you missed it, Artorus Games added a supplement into the mix for their Napoleonic wargaming rules, Soldiers Of Napoleon. The newest book in the range, Wars Of The First Empire, can be snapped up from the Gripping Beast webstore.

Wars Of The First Empire - Soldiers of Napoleon

Wars Of The First Empire // Soldiers Of Napoleon

As mentioned above, this supplement looks at the War Of The Third Coalition and carries through to the Invasion Of Russia during the 1800s. There are fourteen army lists included that cover four campaign theatres that slot into that period between 1805 and 1812.

To give you a breakdown of what's inside...

  • The War of the Third Coalition includes four army lists for the principal combatants: France’s Grande Armee against the alliance of Austria and Russia, plus the small British Expeditionary Force to southern Italy.
  • The War of the Fourth Coalition includes three army lists for the combatants of the campaign: France’s Grande Armee against the Prussians and Russians.
  • The War of the Fifth Coalition includes five army lists for the combatants of the various campaigns in Bavaria, Austria, Poland and the Netherlands: France’s Grande Armee, the Bavarian army and the Duchy of Warsaw against the Austrians and the British Expeditionary Force to the Netherlands.
  • The Invasion of Russia includes two large army lists for the combatants of the campaign: France’s mighty Grande Armee de la Russie against the Russians, including new unit profiles.
  • March On!, is a narrative campaign system for use with any Soldiers of Napoleon theatre, as players command their own division through a series of linked battles and refight their war, until one side is forced to sue for peace. Featuring unit experience and attrition rules, campaign random events, great battles and siege assaults.
  • A Siege Assault scenario and new units for the Army’s Central Reserve, rules for the siege train’s heavy guns and mortars.

It certainly seems like you have some fun additional rules to delve into if Soldiers Of Napoleon had already got you hooked. I particularly like the addition of that March On! narrative campaign system where you can start to show the changes and developments within your army throughout the course of a few linked games. Also, everyone likes a good siege scenario, right?

Wars Of The First Empire #2 - Soldiers of Napoleon

Wars Of The First Empire // Soldiers Of Napoleon

For those unfamiliar with Soldiers Of Napoleon, the game focuses on card-driven action where the focus is on making it feel like you're playing out narratively strong battles on the tabletop where there is a focus on tactical command.

Some more details on Soldiers Of Napoleon...

"This is a set of rules for battles, not skirmishes. It pits battalions, regiments and brigades against each other, but even at this roughly ‘divisional’ scale, it can only recreate part of the many, many, far larger battles of the period. It was an era of European history that saw many of the largest battles ever fought on the continent, which helps explains the period’s lasting appeal to wargamers (always useful to have a huge war to refight) as well as providing a historical backdrop to wargames unlike most others for sheer visual spectacle, with all those men, horses, guns and colourful and decorated uniforms."

Warwick Kinrade has had his hand in this so it's certainly a game to have a look at if you're interested in his style of game design.

Have you tried Soldiers Of Napoleon yourself yet and have you snapped up this supplement?
