Gale Force Nine's Tanks
Getting historical we take a look at what Gale Force Nine have coming soon for their skirmish game called Tanks. As you might imagine this is proper full on tank warfare but with simple kits and easy to learn mechanics.
We've been playing around with some of the components for the game (in printed form) and let you know how it feels to be a tank commander right now.
My Little Pony RPG
We had Alessio Cavatore in the studio this week and we had a surprise interview where we talked with him about My Little Pony, a new license that River Horse has picked up, and the RPG they have planned for it.
Could you see this being the neat role-playing game for kids to have a go at?

‘My Little Pony’ RPG!!!! Oh Dear!! Barrel Scraping comes to mind! Anything for a buck products Inc etc etc etc. Still………I suppose there has to be products to ‘lure’ in the next gaming generation…….and it may be preferable to ‘anti-social’ console/PC games…….So? Maybe? It won’t be quite my ‘cup of tea’
I’m not a Brony myself, but there’s a lot of them out there.
True that! My oldest son is a massive brony and, heck, there are far worse cartoons he could be watching. I have to admit that the MLP CCG was surprisingly good, so I’m sure there are plenty of people out there who will enjoy the RPG..

What a shite episode.
Oh hells no. You boys DID NOT just knock Beast Wars did you?
Three points to bear in mind:
*When Beast Wars hit the Transformers franchise was dead. I mean flatlined. If Beast Wars hadn’t come along it’d probably be in the same position GIJoe is now…
*For a show that was made 20 years ago the CGI animation, by pioneers Mainframe (ReBoot, aww yeah), holds up remarkably well. Especailly compared to the early 2000’s TF shows.
*Having to work with a small cast of characters due to the costs of the animation meant that Beast Wars could go all in on characterization and some plots that paid off spectacularly well, especially in seasons 2 and 3. Even today episodes like Code of Hero, The Agenda, Nemesis stand up as fantastic bits of storytelling, and served as inspiration for many of the writers shaping IDW’s acclaimed crop of Transformers ongoings (and if you want a hook for a Transformers-themed RPG experience, go read More Than Meets The Eye).
And fun facts, towards the end of the series Mainframe enlisted the help of legendary TF writer Simon Furman, and one of the production team was a chap by the name of Dan Dideio. You might know him (for better or worse depending on your point of view) as the man who has been at the helm of DC comics for most of the last 15 years in some role or the other….

Tanks looks a nice lightweight game. As BF focus on Team Yankee this creates as new revenue stream for their existing ww2 models.
Question is, will they go the whole hog and do pre-assembled and pre-painted minis?

My little pony, first time I’ve fast forwarded through a BoW show.
I fast-forward often. In this episode it was the tank game, and the boring rules talk grinding away my sanity. Usually I fast forward through company interviews, which I think should be separate from the Weekender.
They can’t please all of the people all of the time. 😉

It would be great to get back to the 3 amigo’s (justin, lloyd and warren ), with many a tale from warren taking the show off on a comedy tangent ( just for a few minutes ) because ( for me ), the whole skype thing i find a big distraction from whatever the guys around the table are talking about.
As to MLP, no, just no, MLP marines were bad enough 🙁 .
Yeah, I have to agree that the 3 amigos are enjoyable to watch. The best Weekenders for me are when the guys kick back and chat, with nothing too in-depth in any one game system.
Yeah, those are definitely my favourite as well.
Just to try and clarify my earlier comment, I am not ( as it would appear ) an old fogey against change, its just that this particular one has ( for me ) spoilt the look and feel of the weekenders..

Good Show… now whilst I am not now and never have been into My Little Pony ( I am a bit concerned about @johnlyons level of knowledge although I my have missed the explanation) I actually think that Alessio has hit on a brillent idea for bringing kids into the hobby I think many of those on here who have kids will actually relate to this and it will be the unblessed that dont get it. I hope it does really well.
It might bring kids into the hobby, but I’m guessing its main audience will wind up being Bronies. You don’t see many kids playing the My Little Pony CCG, but lot of Bronies play it. The annual BronyCon gets a similar attendance to Salute.
As a father of 2 girls who have both discovered My little pony and role play a little part of me panicked when I saw Alessio’s new RPG today. May God have mercy on my soul if my daughters find out about it!

That wartile game looks as though it would be ideal for an Occulus-style 3D gaming system.
Well I can safely say My Little Pony won’t be on my list of games to buy lol, though I know some dads who will be persuaded in to getting a copy…Tanks on the other hand will be a purchase this year..
I said from the start that Tanks looked like WW2 X-Wing for armour. It also gives Battlefront another means of funding new plastic kits for Flames of War as there is no way in Hell most new gamers would want to futter about with resin and metal models.
I never anticipated seeing Alessio and My Little Pony on BOW… is this an atlernate reality?
I think Tanks will be great fun. I also think x-wing players will feel at home with tanks which is great (this includes me).
But this will have a higher hands on hobby aspect with making tanks and tables to play on :).
There is playmats for sale coming up too so similar to X-Wing in tables setup.
sorry to say it was not he british who killed witman But a canadian brigade. The british were on the right and just 1100 m away the canadian were on the right just under 700 m away and his tank was hit in the left rear blow the turret off .
Conratulaions to Riverhorse on the big chance, they’re playing with the big boys now.
Really hopes it will be a success, as it might open to other IPs.
But there is a market for My little pony related RPGs, Ponyfinder, the my little pony and Pathfinder mashup, have aready had several successful kickstarters.
Wartile seems to pretty much be what I never knew I always wanted.
I just hope they can keep it up since as of now it seems a bit bare boned.

@frankle – what’s Visionaries about? I goggled it and looked at the images but don’t remember ever seeing it which is strange… it looks like the right period in time for me to be watching it on a Saturday morning.
I Havent seen it since i was a kid but Basically a modern day world lost all power, a wizard gave people the power to turn into different creatures and they all donned armour with an image of what they could turn into.

It was the typical good vs evil toy show of that era (kind of like MASK except in a fantasy setting).
I think any of those shows would make for pretty nifty basic rpg games.
The toys had holograms on them way before holograms were popular!! They were awesome! Not as cool as GI Joe but pretty cool…. can you tell I was a child of the 80s? LOL

actually i recall a perfect cartoon from my youth that would make an epic RPG. it was about some kids that went on a fairground ride and were transported to a magical universe. Each of the kids were given special charateristics…one became a barbarian, another a knight, one a ranger, one a wizard, one a thief, and there was this short bloke who helped guide them and they faced a evil dude and there was also a dragon called tiamat…now what was it called again…..;-)
that would be Dungeons and Dragons …
The little kid was a barbarian.
And they had a wimp as a palladin
The little old guy was the dungeon master who would give cryptic hints.
And as it was based on D&D the one thing that was missing was an official campaign setting.

I wonder if I could scale up the Tank game to use all those built 1/35 scale models I’ve got ? . And how big of a table would I need to field 18 1/35 scale T-34s ? MLP RPG , why not ? Anything to get kids away from the TV / computer / cell phone zombie lifestyle and back to interacting with parents and siblings . Next game up for Alessio to work , how about Battle Smurfs ? lol
My first grader just squealed with delight about the MLP news, so I’m looking at the upcoming RPG as a potential gateway game for my daughters…. I typically don’t do any RPGs (miniature gamer here!) so it will be something new for me, too. 🙂

I’ll be interested to see how this My Little Pony RPG compares to some of the unofficial options out there. Whilst I agree that the primary target for the official RPG should be the younger audience, I’m hoping (and actually have faith) that Alessio is able to keep the system enjoyable for groups of more mature gamers.
Also, I want to RP as Bad Horse 😉
Hmm, more zombies? How about a Resident Evil dungeon crawler or skirmish game? Think of the figures that could come out for that series.

It tool me literally whole day to watch the show with all choirs to take care of.
It was a blast thou and hello @lloyd good to see you back on the Weekender.
The Tanks might be an interesting title… smells a bit of X-Wing and WoT.
As for the cute little PINK My Little Pony series if I had a kid, a daughter probably would be more interested, I would go for it.
My daughter saw the “My Little Pony” game…I am now required to get it…lol 🙂
We need to start a support group already
Seeing all these Dads saying their little girls are interested in gaming because of the MLP game proves that something like this was needed!

The tank Xwing game is definetely interesting. After quitting FoW I always wanted to get some tank action going, but I didn’t want to get into a bucket of tanks per side situation again so this sounds perfect.
As for MLP RPG…I approve. If only to annoy the haters.
My litte pony RPG ! Yeess! We are playong android game for half year with my daughtre, but I didnt realized its good show too, time do do some research! I printed rules for tank the other day and rules are very like x wing are they are fantastic! also price 17 pound yes please, can’t wait april.
A lot of the stuff you may need for this game came in the BattleSystems Kickstarter. Might be a good mix of game and card!

Happy Saturday everyone (what`s left of it), another good show guy`s………………….
Liking the look of “Tank`s”, as i have the FoW starter set (2 Stugs & 3 Sherman`s). I think i have a head start (did put them up in the backstage, but as nobody wanted them), just need to get the new box set (when it`s out) and get to playing. Might even get my grandson interested, but then again he`s more in to “Zombie`s”………………….
My little pony, now i`ve seen it all, but then again it was gonna happen sooner or later. Now this is a game i can play, as my two granddaughter`s would love it. Transformer`s first gen, now there`s a game i`d like to see and play. My son grow up on a healthy diet of Transformers – Thunder Cat`s – He Man and a few other`s, i think he would like to play and collect any of them, if they ever made them in to table top miniature games ………………..
The tank segment was definitely the highlight of this episode for me. I liked the idea of Wittmann in a Panther, that might have been even more formidable than the lumbering Tiger he’s historically associated with. In any event, Firefly vs. Panther, a great match-up.
I swear, I’ve been tossing around the idea of a MLP game as a joke, as in when Warren would ask if I was interested in a BoW campaign system, I would say: “I don’t care if it’s My Little Pony vs. Strawberry Shortcake! I’m in!”
He never really laughed at that joke.

My Little Pony will be a must. I can see already several friends that would play this.
Loving the look of the new tank game. Not sure if I would have preferred to see it as pre paints on bases more like x-wing or as it is. Pre paints may have been more attractive to the current x-wing crowd.
First thoughts on My little pony was nope, nope, nope. However I soon realised that although it was not for me I can see that it would appeal to gamers with young families. Great for getting the family together and introducing them to gaming. Good luck With this River Horse, I’m sure that it will be on Warren’s wish list!
My little pony isn’t my cup of tea, but I hope it’s a massive success. This hobby needs more subjects, more diversity of themes for games. Just cos it’s not for me doesn’t mean it’s not welcome.

The pony segment was very funny! Sandwiched as it was between ‘tankstankstanksblabla’ and ‘oh look another zombie game’ (OK, that was a bit harsh, the tank one looks ok I guess and I love the scenery for the zombie game). I don’t really understand the mlp background to be honest but I think in combination with some of my more imaginative nerdy friends and a not inconsiderable amount of beer a hilarious gaming experience could probably be had!

I really do not understand the My Little Ponies thing. I’m not a bronie and I don’t have a daughter. Does this make me the minority?

The Powerpuff Girls where something my son and I watched and again as Alessio said about the new MLP there was stuff going on that younger minds didnt (hopefully) get.
And Yeah its another money maker, but as Warren has said many times that’s what games companies are in business to do.
Not sure about the rest of the world, but here in the US the MLP and brony thing is a bit freaky. What I have seen with card game at least is mostly middle aged men. I for one wouldn’t want my kids around them. Look at some of the freaks at bronicon on YouTube ,,, scary

Question: unless I’ve completely missed the news, isn’t WotC owned by Hasbro? Any idea why Hasbro would go to an outside company for an RPG? The only thing I can think of is not wanting to “dilute” the WotC/D&D brand.
I can think of a few possibilities for them not using WotC:
1) The outside company came up with the idea of the game, and then approached Habro for permission to license the game.
2) The WotC staff team is not large enough for them to develop other products as well as supporting their current line.
3) WotC produce games with a lot of rules. If Hasbro were the ones who decided to develop the game, WotC may have been seen as not being able to produce such a simplified role playing game.
That makes sense. I can see Hasbro not wanting to ramp up the WotC staff on a possibly risky venture. And hopefully, WotC has a lot of work in the pipeline 🙂
While I won’t be picking up MLP myself, that’s no reason for it not to exist. A lot of people need to realise that other games appeal to other people (And OTHER is the key word here – just because something exists doesn’t mean you need to include it in your life). Fanboys especially – irrational hatred of something because it’s not “your” game is a bit silly.
Good luck to Alessio an driver horse. More choice in gaming can only bring in a larger crowd of gamers. This can only be a good thing.
