Happy Weekend!!
Aaaaahhh yeeaaahhh
Happy Weekend!
That cabinet your pop made looks flippin brilliant behind you there mate! 🙂
Thanks very much. My old office “studio” was always a little too dark, I thought. Those LED lights in the cabinet are adjustable (complete with remote control), so I though we could use that as a new interview location.
Watching the interview, though, I noticed my web cam was shaking a little bit. Sorry about that, I’ll have it set on a steadier platform next time. 😀
Thanks again to @johnlyons and @dignity for another awesome interview!
And one thing I totally forgot to mention in the interview: The games we’ll be using to run this campaign / article series:
Battlegroup by Ironfist Publishing, in 15mm. Specifically, the “Blitzkrieg” campaign supplement that covers the invasion of the West in May and June 1940 (oh, and also Poland in 1939, but of course we’ll be using the 1940 data for this project).
Panzer Leader by Avalon Hill, specifically the “Panzer Leader 1940” supplement originally published in “The General” magazine, supplemented by research, counters, and 1940 campaign commentary from Imaginativestrategist, com and Gregory Moore’s PanzerBlitz website.
Remember to give em a good grounding in Escape to Victory for me next time mate 😉 lol
I’ll do better than that. Operation Sea Lion articles are now cancelled, I’m instead launching a full-scale tactical deconstruction of Escape to Victory. Twenty articles, the first one will publish today. Moscow, Stalingrad, Alamein, Kursk, Normandy . . . the true turning point of WW2 was on that football field. 😀 😀 Sly Stallone and Pele and Michael Caine! We’d all be speaking German now if it wasn’t for you! 😀
I f******* luv ya lol
It’s the Weekend! I don’t have to be awake this early, go back to ******* sleep!
That cobblestone street map is my favorite (4×4 version). So flexible working with Mordenburg scenery, giant graveyard, even some more modern pieces for a WW2 or later village.. A distinct absence of straight lines.
Wot! No purple BoW bags & accessories?
@warzan will tell you that the bow colours are red and green 🙂
Got a deep cut snow mat for Frostgrave and it’s brilliant
I have a desert mat, love the stuff, so colourful.
Happy Weekend!
Great show. The current Re-Roll was excellent.
Unless I am very much mistaking, the texture of that mat is actually done by Dave Graffam. He did it as a print and play texture on his own website and later the guys at deepcut used it to make an actual mat of it.
That would explain why he kept popping into my mind!
Another great weekender. Love the idea of merchandise, would buy the dice and token bags for sure.
Love Re-Roll, #3 is very good, love the extra content. Would love to see something like scenarios, etc. for different games.
The Battlesystems stuff looks better every time I see more!
The Battlesystems stuff is great. I’ve got one set of Shanty and it is an awesome kit.
Escape to Victory 1981. Of course its (one) the greatest WWII movies as its got Michael Caine in it.
And a dude who looks exactly like bobby moore!
The Ossie Ardiles look-a-like was my favourite character
LOL 🙂
Escape to victory is one if those films that might make a good game. Could be some tense moments when the Germans discover your tunnel and proceed to at first probe then investigate it fully
I’d probably go with red on black myself
The deep madness minis…I think I need to see a few painted examples to geta sense of them. Otherwise they are just globs of chaosy parts. Variations of the the Thing, basically.
Great Weekender, you guys gel so well together and your enthusiasm is so contagious.
The beasts of war merchandise is a no-brainer. It’s a win win desision. We get quality gear to show off and you get free advertising. Think t-shirts, hoodies, beanies, etc. You work hard to promote other gaming community companies, time to do the same for yourselves.
I’ve had to pullout of backstage for a while due to severe financial issues but will be back once we’re off the skids.
Woven patches would also be a good seller.
You could also do a line of water-slides/decals to add to scenery/buildings,vehicles etc.
@warzan have you perhaps thought about giving a dice bag to your centurions has a thank you/incentive for taking out years subscription finances permitting of course,
Has for me would most definitely purchase b.o.w merchandise maybe getting ahead of myself here but a soft pack b,o,w miniature case would be well just cool 🙂
Your offices are amazing, the boot camp setup looks as though you have been working really hard!
So stoked @caesar has a Beasts of War Channel – Justin & Dragins always makes me smile. That is worth every pixel.
James’ – @oriskany – passion for Second World miniature gaming is amazing. I am always impressed with his knowledge and dedication to bringing this amazing historical period to the tabletop has renewed my boyhood interests in World War Two and some Bolt Actin (and possibly Flames of War) gaming is a very likely goal in the near future. Many thanks James for your active contributions and time.
Mythic Battles. Mythic Battles! The kickstarter I desperately want to back but I may have to wait for retail… 🙁 But it looks great! 🙂 So glad it is going well and they are opening up a lot of extra content. This a good sign for its future. Maybe I can flog off some other minis… 😀
And Deep Madness… that went under my radar and looks amazing too! What is this ‘madness’… 😛
Too much shiny overload. The Weekender is worse than than cocaine for my gaming addiction. Great show boys!
Oh and a big thumbs up on the BoW merchandise, dice and counter bags FTW!
Thanks @spaced2020 . 😀 Here’s hoping your Bolt Action or Flames of War campaigns meet with success! Roll those sixes! 😀
No weekend without the weekender! 🙂
https://youtu.be/ymFSzyTqfe0
Awesome classic war film, has my favourite intro to a WW2 movie ever
An awesome movie, @torros – I own it, and a great scene. 😀
So don’t threaten or dictate to us until you’re marching up Whitehall! And even then we won’t listen!”
@oriskany
It’s one if those cameo appearances that I can’t imagine anyone but Ralph Richardson doing
I love how Curt Jurgens is threatening him in his office. “Goering and his Luftwaffe would love to flatten London as a prelude to invasion . . . we can walk into England whenever we like!”
And he’s totally blowing him off.
“It’s two lump in your tea, right?”
I love the line ”The last little Corporal who tried came a cropper!”
Watching the weekenders a great way to get distracted from painting =]
I know what you mean – my half painted Zombicide BP minis are staring at me accusingly…
It’s the opposite for me. They catalyse my painting by having something gaming related on in the background. Then I find a gaming podcast afterwards to keep the ball rolling (Darker Days Radio perhaps), doesn’t really matter to me if I don’t even play the systems discussed. For me it’s a good way to get a few hours painting in on a weekend.
For your store, how about offering the BoW wound counters that you use in your Kings of War demos?
Did you use the cell shading on the Deep Madness figures? The highlights on them looked a bit too fixed when you rotated them.
Too much cool kickstarter at the same time. My pocket cant accord all this games.
We are blessed to be so unfortunate – dammit! 😀
The Sealion articles are well timed with the Len Deighton SS GB book being on TV this year on the BBC
Even in NI you can see invasion bunkers there in still one in the corner of Glentorans football ground in Belfast
There has been a couple of programme made about the Home Guard role in the case of a German invasion which is a million miles away from Dads Army
Was going to mention SS-GB myself
Re-roll is a very good chance to catch up on stuff I might have missed. 🙂
Exactly – and awesome hi res pics too!
Great show, just what I needed to keep me awake this early on a Saturday morning!
Mythic Battles looks incredible
@warzan re Centurion Challenge – I’m a monthly backstager who’s been wanting to change my username for a while (which I know isn’t possible on BoW v1). If I cancelled and re-subscribed with my preferred username, paying annually up front, would that help the camera fund?
Please please do the merchandise. I would love a polo shirt with the beasts of war logo on it.
Watch this space 😉
BOW dice bags and messenger bags are super cool.
I bot tue Malifaux version of the cobble stone street mat an it is a joy to play on.
The neoprene is great for pushing models, which makes mass battle systems easier to play. Recently I combined their grass matt with the muddy field. This quickly created a superb setting for a 6 player Warhammer Fantasy mega battle.
Happy Weekend!
I just love the dice bags and satchel, fabulous idea to start some BOW merchandising. I’m very interested. T-shirts, polo shirts and hoodies would also be welcome. Hint, hint 😉
I would love the dice and counter bags myself, particularly the red ones
Another great show. Happy weekend everyone!
Another great show. I think the merchandising is a good idea especially if you can get your username on it as well and would be a good mechanism to help you guys get your 4k system up and running.
A nice fountain or statue would fit nice on the square.
Tea Man…..by the powers of Earl Grey!
The Beasts of War dice bags and satchels look really good. The Battlesystems terrain would go really well with a variety of games. I am looking at the Nickstarter for Rogue Star by Osprey Games. I already got most of the Frostgrave books, and it is a really fun game to play.
@warzan, wouldn’t an escape to victory game be subbuteo with Nazis?
Really Liked that Skirmish Kickstarter. Been trying to get a campaign together with friends who all live at a distance. This seems really cool and I like the maps and stuff included. Really good Weekender, but you guys a killing my wallet!
Couple of things.
1) On that table I would choose to play ArcWorlde, I wish you guys would give it a go sometime. Right no its one of the most fun games going.
2) I’m a backstage month to month member. I’ve been trying to figure out how to change that to pay the full year but havn’t found the answer. I even emailed the team but have had no reply. If anyone can point me in the right direction I would appreciate it.
Do we have a rough price for a tea pinny? 😉
If you want one a price can be arranged 😉
One, I am not sure I can handle Justin and Warren in 4K. However, that could save me some cash in not buying a 4K tv. 🙂
For anyone looking for the Shanty Town video, Battle Systems has this video up for viewing…
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7pWfHq9ZosI
Blown away by the Pacific preview for Konflikt 47, Samurai with jetpacks!
4K would be great if you can manage it, painting tutorials need all the resolution you can get! The Duncan videos show what can be achieved. Does anyone know if Duncan is in 4K? In the meantime, some hi-res stills at important stages would help.
The best game for that table has to be the Hobbit. One of the best if not best fantasy skirmish game of all time.
Happy weekend guys , the bags are a great idea
‘JUSTIN IN A TABARD!!!!!’
WIth operation Seelöwe I always hae to think of the Enxpansion for Dust with the same name, all those Mechs stomping through south Britain…
Great video guys, the value for money from those kickstarters at times is astonishing.
I still try to stick with my rule of only buying from my local store though, I like it there for non kickstarter stuff.
I am not really one for writing articles and things, so I contributed to help out with the 4K in the best way I can. For the record, I think Romain’s tutorials are as useful and enjoyable to me as a lot of the miniature mentor stuff I have bought. 4K will only improve that.
The battle system terrain looks awesome, but I find it too expensive.
Yes to dice & token bags.
Love the stuff Annie has sent you. My thoughts are that the BoW username on the back is almost compulsory, I love that! I’d also like to see little skirmish size miniature bags with foam in them in a BoW range.
Loving the bags. Might have to have one of each colour. Plus very happy that I’ve managed to get the previous ‘re roll mags. I thought I had missed them!!!
Happy weekend!
My favorite fantasy skirmisher is still Freebooter’s Fate – even if Raging Rivers suggests more water, the village gaming mat really inspires me for some scenarios.
Happy weekend. On the point about backstage, I came a backstager when warren first mentioned about the centurions. I think the content on BOW is great and back stage opens up even more so much so I now have too much to watch . The main highlight is Re-roll. You could quite easily go to a news agents and pay £3+ for a magazine that has half the amount of content at no where near the quality. I would love to see Justin and dragons added to reroll!
Very excited about mythic battles I have made my pledge and can’t wait to see what is yet to come. Plus games like Of Gods and Mortals and Broken legion by ofsprey would look great with these minis. roll on Dec 2017… have great weekend
I have had the pleasure of playing on the deep cut 6×4 cobbled battle mat. Thanks to the Isleworth gaming club I was able to bring down a couple of 750 point armies and introduce Peter to a game of Bolt Action. I dragged along some terrain and a huge windmill in the middle of the town square type area. We decided to block off a couple of roads to stop the superior movements of the tanks on roads taking over the game. We needn’t have bothered because the preparatory bombardment destroyed my Panzer IV before it even got an activation and my Panzerschreck team took out his Sherman by turn 3. lol. The mat really did improve the gaming experience and I thank the guys for letting me play (hope to get a Monday off work soon and get down there again soon)
Escape to Victory was so bad it was good and you can’t argue with the strength of the cast.
There are some really cool Kickstarters about (but I guess before Christmas is the best time to push your product even if it isn’t actually created for several months).
Even if I had the cash I don’t have the space to take on any more game systems etc. but the board games (being self contained and rarely terrain heavy) are really appealing especially with solo play options. My Christmas list has been turned down at the approval stage by my wife because it is full of boxes (Lost Patrol, Kill Team, Storm of Sigmar, Plastic Churchill, Plastic Firefly etc.) and she has noted the potential for the GW games to encourage expansion and development incrementally into a whole army that I’d need to find somewhere to store once painted. She does see the writing on the wall though and plans for my son to be upgraded to a bigger bedroom will mean that his current small room is about to become hobby and hobby storage central. 🙂
Sorry for my impromptu Frostgrave and The Walking Dead videos in the forums that just had me gushing about the parcels arriving yesterday. The Forgotten Pacts Frostgrave expansion supplement was delivered extremely fast as part of a “Nickstarter” preorder scheme from North Star that gave me a nice discount and some “stretch goal” style additions to my purchase.
I am so glad that after a few night shifts this coming week I will finally be off work and on my way to the Bootcamp, hopefully to meet a ton of people with the same gaming afflictions I have.
My family are getting a weekend off from my conversation surrounding gaming, which with their limited and waning interest in the subject apparently makes for boring chat at times.
The tables at BOW look awesome and my first tutorial led steps into the game at home are only making my interest in the game grow as the flight date edges ever closer.
Great weekender. See you all soon.
@oriskany on Sealion. I had the fortune a few years ago of sitting down in the Imperial War Museum archives with Major General Julian Thompson ( who was one of the British Commanders during the falklands.) who at the time was working through some research which included looking at the collection of the original german copies of the plans for Sealion.
He took me through the plans. His conclusion was the plans would failed because the airborne section of the plan would have failed. Not because of the defenses, but amount of telephone wires where the planned para drops would have taken place. They would have screwed up the drops.
Are you going to include this factor?
7th Fleiger Division wouldn’t be in a fit state to conduct an Airborne drop till spring 41 due to losses and also losses in the transport fleet and among the pilots trained for parachute drops.
I remember reading about how the invasion was wargamed by some of the surviving post war generals. The consensus was that the Germans would have lost.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Sea_Lion_(wargame)
Great input guys –
I’ve also found some issues with the German use of airborne troops in the Seelöwe plan. Actually, even larger issues than the state of the ground (telephone wires) or the state of 7th Flieger Division. As in, there seem to be whole divisions simply missing.
Famously, 7th Flieger was supposed to land along the eastern flank of the proposed invasion corridor. I won’t spoil exactly where these landing were supposed to happen, besides you guys probably already know.
For the westernmost landings however, (in the version of the plan we’re using), we have another airborne drop. Who? 7th Flieger, Luftlande-Sturm-Regiment 1, 22nd Flieger Division, these were all allocated (according to sources I’ve found so far) on the eastern assault. The OKW directive issued 30 August says that these additional airborne operations will be conducted to support, facilitate, and screen the western wing of the invasion, followed by: “additional airborne forces will be arranged.”
Additional airborne forces will be arranged? S-Day is on September 15. So in two weeks, are the Germans going to bend over and s**t themselves a new airborne division?
Other famous German airborne formations aren’t founded until later in the war to my knowledge, and so far I haven’t run across any mention of precisely what forces were supposed to execute these western operations.
I can’t even imagine they’d pull the typical WW2 German tactic of taking an existing unit (in this case 7th Flieger), dividing it in half, and then filling out both forces with new troops. This is because all existing sub-units of 7th Flieger have specific, pin-point targets in the Seelöwe plans I’m looking at. So unless they were going to subdivide all these regiments and battalions as well . . .
I’m honestly not sure about factors like telephone wires. I certainly won’t go up against a Major-General, but this almost sounds like a case of a battle, war, and nation being lost because of the horseshoe nail (I’m sure you guys have heard that parable). I’m not doubting they would be a factor. I just don’t know if they would have caused the whole airborne assault to fail, much less the whole whole invasion in total.
Historical precedent shows this. Narvik went badly wrong in a number of ways, but Norway still fell. In Torch, a huge part of the airborne assault (i.e., at least one whole American division) landed in the wrong place, they didn’t find their way to the battle until after the invasion had succeeded without them. All kinds of things went wrong at Normandy (to the point where the Americans never again in WW2 dropped paratroopers at night), and still it succeeded. For a plan to fail, quite a few things have to go wrong.
To reverse the example, the airborne forces at Market-Garden succeeded in almost all their objectives (despite all the infamous problems and delays) and still the overall operation failed. Invasions succeed even when airborne operations fail badly, and when airborne operations succeed, the invasions sometimes fail.
But yes, we are taking such factors into account, if only in an abstraction. One the games used to simulate larger-scale airborne operations (both parachute and glider) is Para Leader, the Avalon Hill supplement to Panzer Leader. This game takes into account all kinds of things, wind speed and direction, landing obstacles, platoons breaking up into sticks, glider hard-crashes, etc. Any airborne unit that lands on an urban hex is considered automatically destroyed (i.e., combat ineffective), if memory serves.
Now remember this is a regiment/brigade-level game, where every one of your dozens or even hundreds of pieces represents a platoon of forty-sixty men. So when a fallschirmjäger stick (in this game, roughly a squad) drifts onto an urban hex and is is eliminated from the game, it’s not every man impaled on a church steeple or strung up on a telephone wire. It’s just enough men killed or injured (or at the very least, lost their equipment) to render that unit a non-issue in the immediate engagement at hand (90-120 minutes).
So yes, in Para Leader, I have lost many American, British, and definitely German paratroopers and gliders to these obstacles.
In another way that is less of an abstraction:
Using 1940s aerial photographs of the planned drop points as a basis for Photoshop custom maps for some of these games, I’m finding that the planned drop / glider points were pretty built-up even in 1940. Applying the rule for airborne units landing on urban hexes, along with the rules for wind strength, wind direction, and drift, picking LZs for these airborne forces on the actual game table has been pretty tough. And yes, these airborne forces have taken a lot of damage just landing and, in the case of paratroopers, trying to get their sticks re-merged into a full-strength platoons (usually half the game right there).
But as we saw at Maleme Airfield on Crete, German paratroopers could take tremendous losses in the face of tough resistance and still carry the day.
Well they only carried the day at Malame due to an enemies mistake…
Both 7th Fleiger and 22 Airlanding have losses to replace before any operations. Also German airbodne doctrine requires airfields. Which due to this, will be heavily defended.
German airborne operations tend to succeed despite of themselves, rather than any real strategic genius, other than Eben Emael. With Sealion you have the added hinderance the FJ commander is in bed after being shot in the head by an SS man.
More worryingly though is the German military and its utter lack of amphibious doctrine and experience.
Even if you remove the RAF and somehow make the Royal Navy vanish, its still a dangerous crossing using the utterly unsuitable craft they proposed. There are no specialist landing craft, no where near enough transports or surface ships, and both Norway and Crete show how inept the Germans were at this sort of venture. River barges with a plane engine strapped to the back are not a good idea… add in the Royal Navy and even last ditch RAF aircover to engage an enemy assault and Sealion, at best, is a disaster. Just look at the efforts needed for D-Day to succeed…
Sealion doesnt even need an enemy to be a total failure.
The Germans never took it seriously enough and never had the resource to do it in September 1940. It didnt happen, because it couldn’t. The idea that the Luftwaffe would act as the armies heavy artillery over the UK just shows the madness. Add in that the Luftwaffe also has to keep the RAF and RN at bay, and also wasnt reoresented at initial planning meetings and you get a sense of what a basket case Sealion was.
This is one of the problems with Sealion as a counter factual study. Not only do you have to change reality uptil that point, but you really need to change German strategic thinking…
I think for Sealion its best treated as fantasy, rather than trying to find a historical way it could happen, and treat it that way and have fun with it.
Well, we have five weeks of discussions, data, and information to go through before we dismiss the whole idea of this article series out of hand.
Oh, and PM sent. 😀
@oriskany I have to say that it was the telephone wires that stuck in my mind…lol I think he said that there were a few other factors, given who he was and his military background I was probably a bit in awe of him as well, not everyday you get to learn military history from a living Major-General of the Royal Marines who played a role in a famous military campaign (and has a proper traditional British General name Julian Howard Atherden Thompson…lol)
Yeah, @commodorerob – I was certainly trying to be very careful about that reply. The last thing I want to do is go head-to-head with a major-general who’s had a combat command. Talk about wargaming at “1-1 scale!” 😀
Happy Weekend! One of the best weekenders in the last couple of weeks. John is back!
@oriskany this is going to be a blast 🙂 The See Lowe alternative campaign I mean.
Merchendise yes, T-shirts and mugs please.
Thanks, @yavasa, I hope you’ll like it! 😀
Whoo hoo!!! I’m a winner!!! I may not win any of the games I play but today I am victorious.
Massive thank you to BOW guys. Love you!!! Also thanks to Battle Systems for making amazing terrain.
Everyone, go and check out their Kickstarter. How often do you change game systems? If you don’t play anything sci-fi you will one day. You’ll kick yourself for not jumping on board when you had the chance. Like I did with the fantasy set. But no longer thanks to BOW and BS.
Happy weekend everyone.
Fun show again guys.
I couldn’t resist backing the new Battle Systems KS after your feature. I don’t play anything of that genre (yet), I’m guessing Infinity would be the obvious game so I’ll have to look into that before the KS drops next year.
Great show. Love BS shanty.
Battle Systems Terrain is so cool, we have a bunch of the post apocalyptic we use for Zombicide and will do the same with Walking Dead when it gets here.
I’d so play Hell Dorado on a table like that one (although you only need 3×3)! Just add a cemetery, a ruined church with a portal to Hell itself and some creepy terrain pieces and you’ve got yourself a scenario!
This game definitely didn’t get the attention it deserved. I miss it dearly.
@ Warzan – I agree with you about that Deep cut mat – it is just a superb layout for any fantasy game – for me that’s Malifaux. Howvver, when you first unveiled it, my instant reaction was “ooh, that would be great for Bolt Action – fighting around a small french village would be amazing on that!”
As for the merchandise – I’m 100% positive there is a market for that! I love the game bag, although I would only need the bag. I have so many dice, tape measures, templates etc, that buying more would just be overkill. Even with a BoW logo.
Actually – what we need is a Justins and dragins cross-over tee. Specifically, I want a shirt with the “100% not cursed Sword” cartoon across the front. It would take pride of place in my collection.
First off, the shanty town looks cool. This would be so great for any si-fi skirmish or battle game. Love the deep madness KS you showed off and if I had the money would definitely be getting in on it. Looking forward to next week with TWD, looks great!
Happy Weekend guys……another brill show..really looking forward to the operation Sealion articles. Quite interested i our your store might look and go, i would definitely buy stuff with the BOW logo on..
I love the matt you showed. However, I like terrain that has more character. One with hills and other landscape features. Just point out this kickstarter which I am backing for making terrain — https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1378063512/tabletop-hex-terrain-toolkit/comments
Just a thought the Conflict 47 would be interesting to use for the Operation Sealion to throw a twist into it for a table game…any thoughts.
Great weekender guys as always. Glad to hear that the centurions have started to move forward, it had gone a little quiet and I was afraid it hadn’t taken off. 4K is the way to go, but if you already have archive storage problems, this is going to make it exponentially worse!
Really looking forward to @oriskany ‘s Operation Sea Lion, I’ve always loved the what-if’s side of wargaming.
And please stop showing me great Kickstarters, I am rapidly running out of favour with the wife and I’m already trying to come up with arguments for getting on board with Kingdom Death when that comes back to KS.
I would love to support the show by purchasing some swag from your shop but be it that I am in the USA the shipping may cost as much as the items I wish to purchase. Unless you use something like Borderfree.com the shipping from GB to US would be to much I am afraid.
I will always try and keep shipping to a minimum…but if you can club together with friends then obviously that can help share the burden.
I’ve got that mat in 4×4 and 4Ground buildings for Albioniccans in Arcworlde.
Just donated 2 annual Backstage Passes. This is my early Christmas present to BoW.
Double Centurion!! 😀
@rfernandz2001 you are officially awesome
Cool idea, great vid
Battle systems is doing a great job, all of you should see them kickstarter with the sci fi II project, its great and what a great game tables do you guys have there!
I’m so glad the mythic battles ks is going well!!
Also, Looking forward to higher res content!
Red satchel from Cosy Dice for me please, but the shipping to Oz might be the killer there.
Backed Mythic Battles Kickstarter as soon as I could, (backer 2303), simply can’t wait to see how far it goes.
Thank you gentlemen for another glorious show!
@oriskany
Can’t wait for the new series of articles to start man!!
@merchandise
Yeah baby! The stuff looks great 😎 I’m sure it’ll fly off the shelves.
But I agree, we want mugs and t-shirts as well. The BoW army wants to show their colours after all!
@thewalkingdeadbootcamp
Can’t wait to play on those fabulous tables! Great to see they are themed after the story and not just random. Still no prison tho!! And a stretch of highway full of cars. 😉
I was hoping you’d turn up, @suetoniuspaullinus – we all know of your passion for fallschirmjägers! This is one a lot of my readers have been asking about for a while.
Don’t give me ideas 🙂 There is still a week for me to do one 😛
Can’t wait for this weekend!
i blame this show for my huge pile of unbuilt minis 😛
Another top show guys and seriously considering a backstage pass for all the extra content
@phoenixman less than £1 a week for the sunday show alone is worth it if you like the Saturday show, not to mention all the other content.
my current favorite fantasy skirmish game is Bushido but on that table I’d play Wrath of Kings
Deepcut mats look very nice.
please no more kickstarters thats $200 ive to find, does anybody buy fat bloke by the pound?
I’ve been wavering on the Deep Madness KS mainly because I’ve got Conan arriving any day now and we all know how much is in there, but I am sorely tempted it really does look like and excellent game, and boy do you get a lot of stuff for $100!
Happy weekend. I finally get to watch a weekender on the day it’s released/broadcast again, its been so long. I like the bags and such, would they be available by the Dropfleet commander bootcamp @warzan?. I wonder if there is a battle mat suitable for DFC, I have seen one suitable for X-Wing but the absence of huge planet makes it unsuitable. must find a better job to pay for all this lovelyness. those Kickstarters look amazing, the wife has issued a veto on all future kickstarter purchases but she likes board games so I will show these to her and let her decide.
Who makes those dead bodies you were showing for the Walking Dead table? I think you said it, but I couldn’t make it out in the video.
Love the look of the messenger bags and the various dice and token ones as well. I’ll keep an eye out for those when you post the details.
Sea Lion sounds like it will be great!
As to your shameless merchandising attempts I really like the green 🙂
I think the merchandise would be a good idea, think I’d buy into that as long as it did not affect the excellent day to day BOW stuff.
The deepcut studios mats do look great, would like one to go with my upcoming walking dead game.
I’d like to win the battle systems shanty town as it looks very good, I am currently trying to get my 2 boys into the wargaming world but my homemade terrain isn’t exactly inspiring them so maybe a nice win for terrain like this could turn their heads.
PS excellent work on the re-roll magazine, love reading that whilst on the train around the country.
For the fantasy table at the beginning it has to be LOTR/Hobbit Strategy Battle Game for me. Could play at great game in Bree, Dale or Ithilien
Happy Weekend! holy jumpins, I wish I was in Ireland for boot camps. Canada is a long was away! I will continue to believe I’m a big part of Beasts of war North! *cries a little*
Great show! Lots of interesting stuff in this one. Looking forward to the merchandise.
Very good Weekender. Looking forward to the “Operation Seelöwe” article series.
Thanks very much @tibour and @bothi . BTW, I considered mentioning the operation not only as “Operations Sea Lion” but also “Unternehmen Seelöwe” (as bothi puts it) but I was afraid I’d mispronouce it. My German isn’t nearly as good as it used to be. Sehr hässlich!
I remember watching Escape to Victory at the cinema!! Stallone and Caine, a great pairing 🙂
@warzan @dignity et al. How did you find the quality of the Deep Madness miniatures compared to other board game and miniature game ranges out there? If i take the plunge i’d quite like to go to town on painting them, albeit with that tonal technique of yours.
Deep Madness sounds like it has just about everything i’ve wanted from a dungeon crawler, with perhaps the exception of a dungeon generator. I think with Kingdom Death on the way and having just bought into two other crowd funders in the last two months i might have to echo the calls of others for a moratorium on crowd funding news. Perhaps BOW could get together with the producers and get an unilateral agreement for a ‘annual gaming crowd funder month’, for which we could all be prepared with a predetermined budget and savings… along with a few continguency funds obviously.
Right, i’m off to XE.com to find out how much $210+ is in £s.
On an aside, i just noticed that Deep Madness has an optional purchase that is KS exclusive. I really don’t like it when producers do that.
More specifically, I don’t like it when producers offer optional purchases that are part of the game ( as opposed to accessories or alternative scupts for example ) as KS exclusives only.
I love the Battlesystsmes Shanty setup. They go well (as far as I can see) with the outposts on the SF2 Kickstarter.
The Battle System stuff is really hawsome but since i have seen the game play of Mythic Battle i have to admit that this game as totally got me as mutch as i had to cancel pledges on other kikstarter to keep more money on this one
Im really on the fence about Mythic Battles. I was about to jump in but two things are keeping me back. The low Pound (GBP) and the expansions/extras to buy (especially with KS exclusive content in) that could see an escalating cost in getting all the stuff. I may jump in but atm… still on the fence.
I like the merchandise, but you need some Justins and Dragins images on them.
Great minds think alike 😉
Love the BattleSystems stuff, and am in on their current Sci-Fi 2 KS – this will mate with it SOOOOO well….!
Can’t wait for 2018, Mythic Battles and Deep Madness and who knows what the future holds for Kingdom Death. It’s going to be awesome. And a darned long wait. Anyone have any plans to Kickstart a time machine?
Really like the look of the Battle Systems Shanty Town
that table screams moonstone and arch worlde. while my airbrush is out of action I stole my brothers xbox and have been playing fable 2 because of moonstone, and video gaming is a rare event for me.
@oriskany should be giving lectures at his local university.
deep madness is new school cool. still not sold on pvc miniatures though.
Man, @emptynessisform . . . thanks!
i love RE-ROLL, and i would love to have it in actual print magazine format, if you guys publish it i would definitely buy it. something may be you can add to beasts of war store.
On the mat I would play a game of warlord, I love to buy one of tthose mats
Have to say I like that lessons learnt from Conan are being applied to Mythic Battles, and the prospect of cross-over cards to use some of the more appropriate models (like the Spartoi) in the Hyboran Age are a nice bonus…
Just seen the tea bag cartoon, you guys need to reanact that in a volg
I can’t believe anybody else saw that movie! I’ve tried to bring it up with friends and they don’t believe it was ever made. That’s awesome man!! The minis in the cabinet behind Oriskany look great , would love to get a look at some of those. And that guy really knows his stuff man, even if he had been making half of it up I’d still believe it cause he sounds so convincing. I love his articles. The shanty town terrain looks amazing, and that mat , curved roads…..who knew! Another great weekender guys can’t wait for the XLBS, so glad I became a backstager.
@coachjose59 – “And that guy really knows his stuff man, even if he had been making half of it up I’d still believe it cause he sounds so convincing.”
Well, that settles it. Time to start making up stuff!
Justin: “So what’s this next article series about, Oriskany?”
James: “Okay, so we’re gonna be looking at “Operation Improbable,” a little-known series of covert strike missions carried out by the Swedish Bikini Team against the legions of Dracula just before the Soviet Union’s Third Ukrainian Front re-invaded back into Romania in ythe late summer of 1944. Now this is pretty interesting because of some recently uncovered archival materials that suggest that Operation Improbable may have been resisted by Dracula’s elite “Transylvanian Trapeze Team” (the dreaded “Triple-T”), which, as we all know, were well trained in . . .
😀
I forgot to say the merchandise is cool as is escape to victory
You know I was perfectly happy not having a British Bolt Action Army. I really was. However, between oriskany’s article series and the rumors that Warlord Games might put out a what if on Operation Sea Lion too, I just might have to consider adding the last of the major nations to my collection.
With your demo of Mythic Battles: Pantheon (the name of which makes me think there is or will be some other type of mythic battle), the one thing that the gods lacked is a confidence (or arrogance) factor. Zeus would have never held back and games need to reflect this aspect of the “myths”.
When I told my wife about this game, she immediately asked, “do they have cyclopes?” Theseus, Perseus, Circe, the other 2 gorgon sisters? Shame the house taxes are due-I need someplace to store all the kickstarters that you guys “inspire” me to pledge.
deep cut studio is excellent, i have the frostgrave and the fields matte, they really instantly turn any table into a battlefield, need the urban warfare one next!
Great show guys!
Bow merch! Yes i am very interested! I was going to buy myself a satchel anyway, as mine is loosing integrity and will self destruct in a few months… and i was going to buy it from Cosy Dice! I must say i love the red satchel, however, the green one is also tempting… Having your username/nickname on it would also be nice. Dice bags and token bags would be a nice addition too. If this pans out well, you could have a go with other stuff like coffee mugs, custom made tokens/templates etc. Oh, and t-shirts of course 😉
My budy is backing Mythic Battles mostly because of his Conan KS (compatibility between the two if i’m not mistaken) and it appears that we don’t really need more than one copy of the game within a gaming group but, i think i will back this (it was already my intention before he told me of the compatibility…) because ot the number of minis and the quality of them. I never painte 32mm minis and i think they would look awesome. Plus i could buy the expansions he wont…
Deep Madness looks interesting but not totally my cup of tea and having backed Battle Systems, i can’t afford it too if i back Mythic Battles!
See you tomorow.
Oh, forgot to mention that your bootcamp tables are looking great!
I have so many bags and backpacks, but I’m tempted to get one of the green bags…
Great Weekender and I like the bags.
Ok, before anything else…..How have you not seen Escape to Victory Justin? That and Great Escape use to be on every Xmas holiday.
Great to see the Corvus Belli 15mm range are returning. I could be tempted to get a Roman Army.
I did like the bags, the logo looked great on all of them, look forward to seeing other possible merch ideas.
Another great looking Re-roll….the town/city generator article is really good, plan to use that for a future campaign.
ooo pretty Battle Systems stuff.
Been playing mordheim on the computer. Your mat and 4ground make me want to get together with the gaming group in person and bust out more of that again.
Thank you, Thank You, THANK YOU for [finally[ giving Diemension Games *Deep Madness* KS the love it deserves! It seems it’s added a nice lil boost as well!! Really can’t express how much awesomeness the entire campaign has been!!!
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/diemensiongames/deep-madness/description ftw!
Blaster was here… & really, truly & honestly can’t express all the many & varied ways in which DM has become my fav campaign of the dozens of KS I’ve been a part of!
the bags look brilliant @warzan you may want to think about wallets with the BOW logo?
Thanks everyone for the kind words! It’s been really nice to work with all the BOW team on the merch! I hope this is the start of some very good things to come 🙂
operation DayD sounds great @oriskany
It’s kinda funny that the first thing that came into my mind when I read the headline was Operation Sea Lion. Maybe it’s because it’s the only thing that could have changed the whole outcome of the war. Every other scenario that is often talked about like taking Malta or Japan invides the USSR wouldn’t have such a big impact.
OK I would set Sea Lion not that early because of the short recovery time and the shortage of real landing crafts but let’s see how you roll it out @oriskany 🙂
I see what you did there, @zorg , I like it. “D-Day” in reverse. 😀
@setesch – I would agree that a completely successful Operation Sea Lion would drastically alter the course of the war. I would also put a Soviet collapse, even if only for 5-10 years before they came roaring back out of the Urals, as a potential candidate for a very different ending to WW2. Of course, we covered that in detail back in the Barbarossa series. 😀
As far as Sea Lion being set too early . . . again, I agree. September 1940 is an extremely tight turn-around time. That said, I think it still represents the best chance for German success only because . . .
a) after the start of October, the weather basically shuts down the English Channel for invasion until spring.
b) by 1941 you have all kinds of additional factors stacking up against the Germans. The Americans are provide oceans of aid to the British. The British army has largely recovered. The British capital ship program has now had a chance to roll out some of the new King George V class battleships. British coastal defenses are now pretty formidable. Assuming the Germans had knocked out the RAF in 1940, we have to assume that British training and production programs would have rebuilt the RAF at least to a certain degree in factories in Scotland and the Borderlands (largely out of reach of the Luftwaffe).
It seems to be a question of yes, the Germans are three times as ready . . . but in that same interval the British are five times as ready.
Also, by that time the Germans had made up their mind to go into the Soviet Union.
So . . . Anything’s possible (and I don’t want to give away too much of the article series). We’ll be covering / comparing German prospects in 1940 vs. 1941 in more detail in Part 05 of the series.
Then, of course, is the possibility of a Sea Lion-type offensive after a potential Soviet collapse? With Caucasus oil, Ukrainian agriculture and industrial power? The British empire cut in half through an invasion down through the Caucasus into Persia?
But of course now we’re getting really far afield. 😀
Hope you like the series!
Oh I’ll definately enjoy the series. As your previous ones 😉
Mostly because I do like (and had dozens of them before) discussions about “What were needed for Germany to win the war”. Don’t forget I was born in a devided country and here are allways people who think they know the secret…
Nevertheless looking forward to the series and… btw. I like your glass cabinet 😉
Great points, @setesch . 😀 On the whole “What was needed for Germany to win the war” – Heinz Guderian is probably my favorite German general (a very original choice, I know, although I also like von Manstein and Balck and von Manteuffel) – but even his memoir “Panzer Leader” is a real chore to get through. 600 pages of “if only they’d listened to me . . .” and “I TOLD them this would happen.” 🙁
On the “divided country” – funny thing . . . I was actually in early stages of training in the USMC when the Wall came down. In these stages of training, there was no TV, no phones, even our mail was screened. I had no idea the Wall had come down until almost four months after it had happened.
(yes, I am THAT old). 🙁
Another great show guys. Thank you.
Thoses dice bags just look amazingly good. Can’t wait to see them on the “BoW shop” Cozy Dice has made a hell of a great job. Well done. And Justin looks so comfy with his apron 😉
The Sea Lion series looks pretty interesting. @oriskany will gives us another of his great articles. I’m a big fan of yours Sir.
Thanks very much! 😀 Hope it doesn’t disappoint.
Sea Lion is an interesting what-if scenario.
@oriskany I am sure many of the saboteurs were game keepers & poachers with secret stores of munitions which were hidden by them so no one could prevent them acting out on their missions with many joining the SAS or commandos after the invasion never happened.
Thanks @tmon and @zorg –
Yeah, those “pre-staged partisans” were in place and ready to go. I don’t think the SAS was created until later in the war, but the commandos were being formed up (started in June 1940, I think, at least that’s when the order was signed) and the Special Operations Executive was set up in July 1940 to “set occupied Europe ablaze.” I’m sure if any part of England became part of “occupied Europe” these forces would have certainly been used in places like Sussex or Kent.
Tried to find a program on the net about one of the last surviving UK war saboteurs talking about the plan to stop/slow the Germans virtually everyone in the village were involved one way or another even the vicar @oriskany but know luck sorry.
Great looking mat
Cracking weekender! And loving the Deepcut Studio mat
The mat looked very effective with the few buildings you put on it.Like the kickstarter specially the mythic battles, used to have a poster when i was a kid with all the geek mythological creatures on it,just wish i had enough money to get it.The dice bags and satchel look really nice, cannot make my mind up which color i like the best.Escape to victory what a line up of footballing legends were in it.
a great show guys the figures in the deep madness game look fantastic.
and mythic.
@warzan Another cracking weekender…. was listening to it while driving to the 40k open weekend. Rhys was shouting at me dad it’s your model 😛
@oriskany I did have some explaining to do for my 11 year old as he didn’t understand the idea of playing out a what if scenario – he thought that is what happened 🙂
The battle systems stuff is superb, if I had more storage space I would be all over the new kickstarter.
Seriously can’t wait for the bootcamp next week
Having tried Sea lion in europe engulfed a few times, its definitely a head scratcher! Will look at backstaging when im not broke, always watch the weekender 🙂
Really liked the tables set up for the Boot camp too, always trying to build more coherant themes like those even for 40k and such 🙂
Thanks @richdean – Sorry if I caused any confusion – I hope I didn’t cause a mini “War of the Worlds” moment. 😀
Indeed, @noserenda – Sea Lion is a complex topic. Exactly when, under what conditions, and what are the German “win conditions,” all of this needs to factor in.
The toughest part many times is to remain dispassionate. Don’t try to “aim” toward a desired outcome. Don’t have your mind made up before you begin.
So when the article series finishes we’ll see where we land (pun totally intended, I regret nothing. 🙂 )
BoW merchandise is a cool idea with potential for ways for us to further support the cause. Mythic Battles: Pantheon is probably going to make me break the “no more hobby purchases until next year.” The game play video was the tipping point for me. Looks fun to play.
Nice to see the walking dead boards near completion, bit up set there`s no weekend next week, but on a good note “It`s Boot Walking Dead All Out War Camp”. Have a great weekends gaming you lucky gits.
BoW selling stuff, get`s my vote and hard earned. I like the idea of having your user name added to Cosy Dice products, and with the other products other BoW members will spot you a mile away. Wonder if Cosy Dice will bring in a line of “Man Aprons” like @justin‘s.
Deep Cut mat`s do look amazing, and if i could i`d buy a few, but i keep getting side tracked by new game`s on KS. So what i need is for someone to poke me in the eye`s everytime a new KS comes along, i wont get to see it and then i`ll have spare cash for gaming mat`s.
I`ve down loaded “Re-Roll 3” on to my tablet, and now have all 3 issues. I have read about half of issues 1 and 2 to date, i start to read then get side tracked. So my plan for this week is to catch up with 1 and 2, then read issue 3 and once i`ve read all 3 issues i`ll leave comments. So far from what i have read, i`m really impressed good work guy`s.
I have backed “Mythic Battles”, as i like the look and how it play`s. I have watched the demo game that @Warren and @justin played, and will be watching it again probably tomorrow (Sunday). Now i know Justin was playing careful, and not trying to give to much away, but if i`d been him i would of gone on the attack from the of. His force was as far as i could make out, get up close and give it to them hard, but for some unknown reason he held of…………….@justin mate next time stick the boot in, plant it where the sun don`t shine and you may just beat @Warren.
Deep Madness does look like a great game, but for me it`s a no go as i`ve spent up on KS`s for this year. So unless i have a secret hidden stash i`ve forgotten about, i`ll look in to buying it once it`s in the shop`s.
Hoping to see a merchandise page soon chaps, the bags look great
Awesome kickstarter games! You all already roped me in for two. I must try and resist!
Justin do you fancy a pair of BOW gloves? Thought of making some, but it would be kind of hard playing games with them.
now I have to really look into that battle systems kickstarter.
I”d definitely get myself a BOW dice bag and token bag. The ones with the green inlay are cool.
Aaauuuagh….. so many great kickstarter! Some very tough choices here.
looking at Mythic battles and thinking how those miniatures will work in Osprey’s “Of God’s and Mortals” (OGAM for short)
https://ospreypublishing.com/of-gods-and-mortals-mythological-wargame-rules
Yeah guys! I believe merchandising can really help you guys with making extra funds you guys need. The bags are awesome and I would order a set because you guys really know what we gamers want, quality stuff for our games and making them easy to pack and carry! Great idea bringing it forth!
Favorite deep-cut mat in my household is the Frostgrave one. Although, the winter Dropfleet one looks ace on the computer screen, I would want to see it irl before making it my favorite.
I’ve already backed the Mythic Battles kickstarter, but Deep Madness is looking pretty sweet.
The dice bags and token bags look amazing. I have a copy of Manasurge and instead of having all the tokens and such in little plastic bags I would love to have a token bag with Manasurge stitched on the back.
I just had 13 hours of overtime on Saturday and I was planning to buy a game or two for myself but after watching this episode, I decided to donate an annual backstage pass instead.
Hope this helps towards the new camera and a hobbyist happy. 🙂
Amphibious warfare is a very specialized endeavor and it takes planning, preparation, training and special purpose equipment. There was no relevant experience in the German armed forces. The last British experience was Gallipoli, during World War 1. The next chance to learn by experience was what, the US at Guadalcanal? Some two years in the future.
It’s highly unlikely the Germans could’ve succeeded.
As a former United States Marine, I would certainly agree re: the intricacies of amphibious warfare. However, I can’t say as I agree with the comparisons to Gallipoli and Guadalcanal. Gallipoli was opposed at the shore, as Sea Lion would NOT have been (at least not with any reasonable amount of fortifications, beach defenses, or heavy weapons in 1940), and the landings at Guadalcanal were unopposed.
Also, at Gallipoli the Allies did not have control of the skies to my knowledge, and as I’ve said in many posts and emphatically in the interview, we’re assuming the Germans have won the Battle of Britain and won control of the air (a major change in the timeline, yes).
Better examples might be taken from Weserubung, the previous German invasion of Norway. Let’s check off the comparison, shall we?
** Resistance offered by the Royal Navy.
** Short transit distance.
** The Germans own the sky
** Landing against weak opposition
** No “training or experience” in amphibious warfare.
And of course the Germans win. They take terrible losses, basically half their navy, and many landings become horribly unstuck, but they do win.
Another example can be taken by the Americans at Torch.
** They own the sky
** Weak opposition at the beaches / ports
** No training or experience in amphibious warfare (again, Guadalcanal was unopposed and the first real opposed landings weren’t until Betio Island at the Tarawa atoll in November 1943).
** The airborne drops go completely wrong and have no positive impact on the battle.
And we basically get the same results. Many landings get completely unstuck, the Americans take way more mosses than they should, but they win in the end.
I’m not trying to say that Sea Lion would have carried the day, conquered Great Britain, and won the war.
BUT THAT’S THE WHOLE POINT
Look guys, I can already see a trend starting here, a trend I was really hoping to avoid from the start. These snap-judgments based on a small slice of the information available. There are five weeks of discussion on the way.
I just feel that skipping to the end without taking the time review everything isn’t the way to go. I’m not even saying that you’re predicted result doesn’t happen to arrive at the correct conclusion. It just takes longer than two paragraphs to get there.
Hope that makes sense. 😀
Do we know how many active troops the British have?…Could it be presumed that the Australian and NZ forces destined for N.Africa are still in Britain for training ( not sure if they actually were or not ) and how many French,Polish, Dutch etc troops have managed to make it to Britain?
Great question,. @torros –
The British OOB I have for the defenses of Great Britain on 11 September 1940 (sources: Stacey, C.P., The Canadian Army 1939-1945, An Official History, Ottawa, King’s Printer … and Lt. Col H. F. Joslen, , Orders of Battle, Second World War, Her Majesty’s Stationary Office, 1960.) . . .
Short answer . . .I don’t see any Australian or New Zealand troops here. This OOB goes down to the company level in some places, but I don’t see any ANZAC troops. All kinds of Scotsmen, Irish, Welsh, and Canadians, though. French, Polish, and Dutch troops probably wouldn’t be included in this OOB listing (not part of the British/Commonwealth army), but they would certainly be there.
I honestly think numbers of manpower wouldn’t be a serious issue for the British. Figures for the evacuation of Dunkirk are pretty high (335,000 I think), and include some 90,000 French. Some of these French weren’t armed at all, however, and even the British formations would be a little lean on any kind of heavy equipment, artillery, tanks, trucks, etc. The BEF had included most of the really mobile forces in the British army (leaving aside such formations as the 7th Armoured, 11th Hussars, etc, already in Egypt to my knowledge), and the loss of this equipment leaves the British army without a lot of mobility or heavy gear.
I’ve also got a map I’ll post that shows the deployment of these divisions, corps, and GHQ command sectors. I’m looking at about 20 divisions (two of them armored) and 10 independent brigades. Very rough estimate, call it 300-400,000 men? Deployed from Dover to Belfast, of course. I can’t answer for how many of these were actually viable formations with reasonable amounts of equipment, vehicles, and training.
MASSIVE CORRECTION to above post, @torros .
There was a New Zealand Division in Britain on 11 September 1940 – New Zealand Division: (Major-General B.C.Freyberg)
Part of XII Corps, HQ Eastern Command – deployed in the Ashford / Tunbridge Wells area.
Apologies. 😀
Great Weekender!
The merchandise is definitely of interest to me, maybe you could look at merchan-dice…
For the cobbled mat, once-upon-a-time I would have used it for Mordheim, though maybe it is too green.
Kickstarter overload!! So much shiny stuff….
Cheers!
Great weekender.
Deep cut mats
4ground scenery
Pantheon
Ww2
What’s not to love
For the Deep Cut Mat I`ll play Pulp Alley with Fantasy Minis, will work great.
Ooh a hobby tabard.. The Hobbard.
Correction and fun fact. There wasn’t a King OF Prussia the Title was King IN Prussia. Something to do with appeasing the other German nations and especially Austria Hapsburgs who considered themselves the Propper Germans.
Great show gents,
Funnily enough i wasn’t aware of the Centurions program, I think there are grounds for doing a weekender recap in Re-roll for community stuff like that (as wel as all the shiny pics). I’d also suggest a list of winners and prizes from the previous month in Re-roll too.
Love the merchandise!
Love the merch’! That’d be a great Christmas gift, although it may be too close to chrissy for that.
Nice to see Oriskany again. this is the show that I am looking forward to see. it would be interesting to see why Britain lost battle of england but easy one that I would suggest is britain decidet to not drag Polish ( and chekoslowakians) pilots from dywizjon 303 and other 15 sqadrons in to it, left them in their original base. this could change score.
Unfortunately, @radegast6 , we’re not really covering the Battle of Britain in this article series. We just have to take it as a given that the Germans have won the battle already in order for any discussion of Sea Lion to have even the most slender of starting points,
In order to do the Battle of Britain any justice, that would have to be a whole set of article series by itself. Do we have any volunteers? 😀
Yet another super weekender.
After watching your superb battle report I have decided to take the plunge and pledge for Mythic Battles Pantheon.
I do have a question for @warzan : have you managed to source a supplier for clear bases? I think that they made the difference to the battle report and I would love to have my Mythic Battles figures on clear bases. The artwork of the gaming tiles needs to be seen.
Uuuuh! I never managed to back the awesome Shanty town KS, but have had great games on their original sci-fi and medieval terrain. Fingers crossed.
I really enjoyed Ben’s town creation article, it really sparks the imagination.
Also the BattleSysyems shanty town looks perfect for Walking Dead! My KS arrived and the game is great and the scenery would set it off nicely 🙂
Great show again, happy weekend. Had to make a choice for this week, take girl friend on hols or attend boot camp sorry guys you lost.
Great show. Interesting all around especially for my inner WW2 geek.
Great shanty town terrain. It would be great for Infinity games. I never did like that most tables are so clean. Gimme some slums ala District 9 or Elysium.
those kickstarteer were wayyy too temping
Deep Madness looks very interesting but with Star Saga and Mutant Chronicles Siege at the Citadel just ending there’s just no KS money left especially right before Xmas! Not like they need my money but just wish this was coming out in March. Oh well we can’t buy everything… As much as we want too!
So now for xlbs, kickstarter is now a dangerous place for our saves, donot care if you are a wargamer or boardgamer.. What a nicely boards for this bootcamp.
Well another tip from precious weekenders, i need your help mates, wanna start so customize Two factions for a bosnian conflict theme on team yanke with a mix of german usa vehicles to
Simulate spanish blue helmets vs soviets forces. But donot know What weaponry used spain, i mean vehicles and kind of troops, Also for bosnian or Sarajevo forces?? Thinking on bmps ghosper, shilkas and soviet infantry. Any helo oriskany? Warzan… John… Please
Pm me. Thanks
Another craking Weekender Show – thanks guys. Those Deep Cut Studios mats are some of the most detailed mats I’ve seen so far. Would be also a joy to play Warmachine/Hordes on your 30 seconds terrain 😉
I’ll definately will be following the new article series from oriskany.
Those BoW Merchandise products are awesome! Color combinations are absolutely cool. If you’re going to produce T-Shirts I’ll buy some of those too.
Interesting little chat about Sealion there, I wasnt really aware that the Germans took such a heavy beating taking france.
Also, I wish I had a couple hundred dollars to chuck at kicksterter this month! 😉
Thanks, @aramaki , tuskar , and @ugleb – As far as France goes, and I hope I didn’t overstate this too badly in the interview, it’s just that the German Army wasn’t nearly as strong or as well put-together as many casual history observers may get from the History Channel, etc. Yes, it was a masterful campaign, and yes, the Germans won . . . badly.
It’s just that Sea Lion is often rolled out as a case of German strength against British weakness. And while the British were (in that very narrow time window) very weak, I just don’t think the Germans posed quite the “Blitzkrieg Juggernaut” that many expect.
Also, I try to never miss any opportunity to “myth bust” about World War II’s great “Pantheon of Losers” – the Poles charging tanks with cavalry lances, the Italians falling apart every time in the Desert War, the French standing stupidly in their Maginot line watching the Germans drive right past them. I doubt the nearly 30,000 dead the Germans sustained in the Battle of France would see it that way. That’s over half what the US lost in 12 years of Vietnam (a war we lost, of course).
Oh, and I was wrong in my interview where I quote the Germans as having lost 700+ aircraft. It’s more like 1200+, along with 1200+ tanks and AFVs, although I’m not sure how many of these were mechanical breakdowns, etc.
I think my favourite Deep Cut mat has got to be the Wasteland one, it just fits into so many game systems it’s unreal.
Great Weekender, The tables for the Walking Dead bootcamp, waow,, guys you will have a nice day.
And also, Iam really interested in the BoW merchandise
I would love some mordheim on that gamingmat.
i am all in on the kick starter lol. love the galactic pledge i think i have also pledge for every expansion. Now to sell one of my children to pay for it haha. have a good weekend
Just too many kickstarters and too little storage space (and $$$). Great show – thanks!
Those Deep Mats look pretty cool. I might have to get some of those.
Just resubbed to check out reroll, awesome stuff!
With all this traffic on Sea Lion, I’ve neglected to mention another key point on today’s weekender . . .
OH HELL YES, I would spend a stupid amount of money on BoW merchandise, especially if it could be expanded to coffee mugs, T-shirts (as others have suggested), and how about shot glasses? Maybe dice?
Shipping costs wouldn’t matter. Merchandising / branding mark-ups wouldn’t matter.
My bank assault awaits your assault. 😀
The battle system idea of putting the terrain in DVDs cases is great. Would be very handy to bring with you to other places. Great stuff.
Mythic-Battles-Pantheon is not a regular minis game but a biggies game
That deep cuts mat with the 4 ground terrain is beautiful. 4×6 just screams Age of Sigmar to me. But at 4×4 I think a game of Malifaux would be better with the elevations.
Great weekender. Getting more into my recent history gaming thanks to @oriskany previous series, so looking forward to this one.
Very interesting discussion about the WW2 alternative scenarios, very well argued.
Thanks very much @sheepman and @lakedownlawyer . Of course we’re not really trying to prognosticate any real outcomes, just take it apart, look at the pieces, and have some fun making some educated (of semi-educated) guesses. 😀
I want to save up cash for a better car, but I also want these cool Kickstarter games you keep showing us…
Loved the Oriskany segment! Can’t wait to see the Operation Sea Lion articles!
A very big hell yes to BoW merch. I will get a bag or two of some sort, but what I really want is, if you some day find a company you are comfortable with and trust, a giant coffee mug, 24 oz. or bigger, with your logo that I can take gaming with me or sit here and watch my weekenders with. @warzan , you have said before that you didn’t want to do cheap crap like chincy t-shirts and the sort, which I do respect. Not many company’s take enough pride in themselves or their image, so good on you guys for that. So if you are letting your friend over at Cozy-dice do your logo, how much would she charge for an embroidered hooded sweatshirt?
At my local gaming group, Redditch Wargames Society, we have started an invasion of Britain campaign. We based it around Deal in Kent. My opponent has German Fallshirmjaegar, while I am using a Home Guard platoon, backed by regular troops.
I do have the Dads Army figures that Wargames Foundry did, plus a Lledo model of Jones’s butchers van, that I found in a car boot sale for £3.00!
So far the Germans have pushed the Brits back and have secured a golf course to use as a landing zone to get heavier equipment in.
We use Too fat larders Chain of Command campaign rules. This is a platoon sized game, and you can personalise your leaders, giving it a bit of a roleplay element.
As I use Captain Mainwaring, I just use him as he appeared in the tv show.
Paul rolled for his German commander, and interestingly, he turned out to be a civil servant manager, much like Mainwaring!
We play part two in a couple of weeks.
Thanks @ghostbear and @noisysteve – Man, Deal in Kent? You’re way over to the east.
You know, usually about 5-10 days after the first article in a series posts, I start a thread in the forums that others can participate in, adding photos, games, battle reports, etc.
I would love to see some of your tables, games, photos if you have any, or just notes on how your campaign is going. 😀
My hobbyist life would be complete, if I could wear the mighty mark of Beast of War on my body! Green light to the marchandise!
About the Fantasy table. I am sure, I should play Freebooter’s Fate on it. That skirmish game is all about Pirates and jumping into/on/off scenery. I have got a Deep Cut cloth mat myself and a couple of 4Ground buildings. The Black Powders work fine with the Mordanburg. Even put some Dark Age stables with it. I haven’t got this kind of town, but a smaller version of it. I love it!
That Battle Systems Shanty Town Set would be perfect for playing Dark Age. It reminds me a little of Wasteland 2, which is another reason I want to win it!
Anyone know of the Company Dimension Games? Deep Madness looks great, but i am concerned that this company has no known names and the pledge sounds too good. At least 151 minis at $100 USD before any other components?
That mat gets a big thumbs up from me. As much as I love custom gaming tables and lovingly crafted demo boards, I just don’t have the room to store them nor the desire to play on the same layout game after game (no matter how good it looks).
A great mat with some appropriate terrain to put on top really is the best compromise I think, particularly for clubs or people who have to travel a lot for their games. I even found a great way to store them if you don’t have storage bags to hang them vertically – you can buy a bunch of U-shaped guttering clips and fix them on a wall horizontally (spaced about 1ft apart) to hold the rolled up mats.
In catch up Monday mode and have downloaded (but not yet read) re-roll to keep me occupied during the long dark Welsh evenings.
Great show again chaps. I’m definitely up for a BOW bag and dice bag. That would be very cool. How about a discount when we renew our backstage subscriptions? That way we get some cool stuff and you guys for another year all in one smooth online transaction.
Thanks for showing us the Gary Hunt baboons. They would be great for Congo and would go nicely with/against the Savage Core simians.
Love the cobbel stone mats, with the buildings from 4Ground. I would play warmachine, or my Lord of the Rings/ The Hobbit.
Love all the custome stuff. Fitts Justin The tee master 😉
The comic strip are brilliant, have you considered putting one in each of the re-rol magazine 😉 ? Love the tactic section, makes me think of my total war games, besides pushing my fil and rank troops.
I have never heard of the movie you guys talked about. And for some reason, im happy about that 😉
Operation Sealion
Love the idea of the invasion of Britain, sounds like you could make some pretty epic battles. About the blitz krieg. I’ve heard that the idea of blitz krieg was actual made by a British officer.
No more kickstarters, my wallet cant take it 😛
Thanks, @svboel, regarding Sea Lion –
On the Blitzkrieg, the short version is that two British army officers in the 1920s were trying to work up a way to apply the lessons of the tank / motorized warfare learned in WW1. They made it “stage one” – hypothetical ideas and writings.
The Soviets made it to “stage two,” they actually got their government’s support and funding, built the armies (not small units, actually built their whole army on the new model), and developed a “deep battle” doctrine incorporating mobile artillery, mechanized infantry, tanks, air support, airborne troops, etc.
The Germans, however, “took the idea all the way to Kickstarter.” 😀 Built the armies (undeniably influenced by the British and Soviets), then refined these unworkable theoretical ideas so they would actually work, built the army, tested and refined it, and took it into combat through a number of pretty successful campaigns.
If she can get those bags to the US I’d totally get a red one.. I’d probably want my name on it now that you showed it to me Warzan.
This was a great show!
I think those messenger bags look really cool, but truth be told, I already have 2 of those, and some backpacks, what would be really cool to see, would be if you guys had some board game bags. Something that would allow me to take a few games with me when I go visit friends, or go to the game night at my local cafe.
Bring on battle systems shanty town my gaming group would all do the happy dance!!!!
Great show as always guys! I like the look of the Bow satchel! I’d love a chance at some more terrain. Does anyone know what mat/texture that is underneath the shanty town in the video thumbnail?
I really liked the look of the BoW merch. The embroidery looked great and the colors are fun and would pop in a convention or gaming event setting.
I’ve been looking at getting the 4×4 Cobblestone mat for a while now for Frostgrave, I’ll have to look at sorting it out sometime in the near future
If Battlesystems products don’t lose their quality after being packed down and set up several times I definitively need to buy some of those
A great weekender!! I always like looking at the behind scenes stress/action before a battle weekend…well. Walking Dead uber weekend. I really need to start investing in some 4Ground buildings.
This is an awesome giveaway!
That board looks great!
Love it, would look great on my game table!!
Good stuff!@
Happy Weekend War-gaming
Posting for a chance to win shanty town to play TNT and walking dead on
Too many kick starters, not enough money.
That is some really nice, playable terrain.
This would look perfect for a near future game I am planing! Cool!
Nice mats, would be great for infinity
These giveaways are a nice way to get folks into the hobby; hope you guys can carry the momentum through to the holiday season!
Too much kickstarter ç.ç
Lots of good stuff going on.
Ding dong. Would love some terrain like that.
Awesome…hoping to win!
A perfect way for me to spend my break on a crappy Tuesday when I don’t want to work.
Love the Weekends 🙂
There’s so many brilliant kickstarters right now, it’s crazy!
Very cool looking mat!
Looking good as ever. I just picked up a fat mat with their big moving sale but I am seriously considering one of these deep cut mats as well, maybe I will try one in PVC.
I keep looking longingly at the Battlesystems stuff, but the shipping to the USA is so high! Even in the Kickstarters!
The Battlesystems stuff looks amazing, but the base pledges are so high…
Great looking set!
Some great kickstarters on at the moment 🙂
That is some nice looking shanties.
The boards look great for the walking dead boot camp I’m still miffed that I backed the kickstarter else would have been there, as for the deep cut mat have been playing a lot of godslayer would be cool on that
I am loving the Weekender episodes. I recently signed up as a back stage member, but I did not know about the Centurion program until recently!
@kierkagard Welcome backstager 😀
Love a good what-if although sometimes I feel like the starting point for asking that question is not as important as understanding the forces in play behind the scenes so that the route you chart after asking “what if..?” is still sufficiently realistic that you don’t have to change too much.
Love this channel…. also This is not a test is my primary game… so I want the shanty town 🙂
Awesome stuff, guys. Keep it up and thank you for your efforts! 🙂
Great stuff.
Love the weekender! Best part of the morning on a Saturday and Sunday. Great show as usual guys!
Those shanties would look good in several games I am looking to play 🙂
I’ve spent quite a bit of time thinking about what would have had to be different to make Operation Sea Lion possible. The changes would have had to go back at least ten years previously to some strategic decisions in how to develop the Kriegsmarine. If they had attempted to challenge the Royal Navy’s sea superiority they would have had to invest in carriers, which they had started but never followed through on. They would have had to do a better job keeping the Enigma machine secret so they could have therefore hung on to north Africa and all the oil there. Then they would have had to invest in more practical, affordable planes and tanks instead of investing in ‘superweapons’ that were psychologically powerful but really never had much impact on the war (such as the v1 / v2). So it would have required a profound shift in ideology far in advance of the actual war.
Thanks, @cymruvoodoo and @zephyr40k – I would completely agree that making changes to a historical timeline and making alternate history scenarios becomes easier and more plausible the further back you go.
Last year for the Team Yankee bootcamp, the team wanted NATO to be invading into the Warsaw Pact circa 1985 instead of vice-versa. An impossible scenario for a whole list of reason we won’t go into here . . . but by going back to 1944/45, we were able to make small nudges to the end of WW2 and the Cold War to produce a new trajectory that would make the formerly-impossible scenario.
We’re using a similar strategy for next year’s Operation Zeus (hopefully).
The biggest one so far was a project “Panzer Leader: American Theater of Operation” – where a big slice of WW2 takes place in the Continental United States. Crazy, right? Depends on how the Civil War ends (admittedly I stole a lot from Harry Turtledove and his “Western Front” series on this one).
Long story short, I agree that Sea Lion (or really any alternate history) gets much easier if you start nudging history 10 years back.
Wow, Deep Madness looks really impressive. My wallet is already screaming, but I can’t resist…
Nice show and could luck with your spot on the site Ceasar. Nice cartoons
Battle System’s KS is doing very well indeed, they just added another basic pledge with the outposts they showed off last week. You can get those outposts as add-ons, but now also as a complete core pledge, with their own mat, all free stretch goals, etc. Really worth checking out, it blends in well with the Urban and Shanty sets from the previous KS (and which Beasts of War are now giving away… wouldn’t say no to a Shanty town setup :-D).
Loves these updates and insights into new fun stuff!
Sweet ep
That shanty town looks great!
Love seeing this in my inbox every weekend, some really interesting kickstarters in here right now.
I was already sold on Mythic Battles (thanks to Warren & Justin’s play-through video), but I’m even more sold on it now that they’re hinting at some crossover with Conan. Can’t wait to see Conan take on Un-killes…
Great weekender
*comments* There! I commented! 😉
lookin good, soundin good
Can attest to the quality of the deep-cut mats!
A friend got the SciFi terrain and it works well for RPG play (Star Wars, DH, etc).
I need that shanty town for my Infinity!!
Love the idea to discuss TT-tactics by the example of real historical battles in your magazin. And, bye the way, i love Frederick the Great … 😉
Justin, where did you get that fake hoodie? 😛
I wish you a happy weekend ^_^
First weekender I’ve watched. Pretty entertaining & interesting. Might check it out regularly. Just getting back into the hobby, we’ll mostly just being hardcore about it again.
Great show guys! That terrain looks awesome!
Big ol’ shanty town that’s densely packed.
Time to get some killteams and infinity going, that’s some dream terrain right there.
I could think of a few other WW2what-ifs. What if the Germans had won at the Battle of the Bulge? What if the Germans had taken Stalingrad and the Caucasus?; What if the Japanese had caught the US carrier fleet at Pearl Harbour? What if the Japanese had invaded Australia? What if the USA did not have the atomic bomb and were forced to invade Japan? What if the Soviets had decided to just continue on through Europe after Germany was defeated? With a little imagination there are many possibilities. In fact what if the Nazis had set up a base on the moon? Actually I think there may be a movie about that one!
Great episode as ever
Great Oogly Moogly! Great to see you guys are still keeping this site strong! That shanty town will look great with my Dark Age Outcasts!
Yeah, Shanty Town set is awesome 🙂
Two Nazis walk into a BAR
Excited to watch!
That sounds absolutely brilliant
Mythic Battles looks great. I could break my vow of not getting into a KS anymore 😀
So many kickstarters, so little time to paint them. 🙁
Awesome looking terrain!
The outposts look awesome!
Battle System does lovely sets!
Diemension Games *Deep Madness* KS Alert;
Now Over One MILLION Dollars In Funding With About Three Days To Go!!!
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/diemensiongames/deep-madness/description
Blaster was here… but is now over on the DM KS page!
Cool video, like the look of the set.
Good show!
The battle mats are very nice looking. I did have to laugh though….”look how quick you can set up a town”…..with only a small fortune spent on buildings/mat/trees 🙂
Lol. No doubt. I hesitate to add up what I’ve spent on all my Infinity terrain.
Have wanted some Beasts of War Merch for a while. Also need a new dice bag as mine has ripped for the Nth time and I’m getting tired of sewing it back together. Maybe I should buy 2 rather than overloading one…
Another great weekender.
I love the Battle System terrain. I jumped into the new on day two. The add ones an rewards have been huge!!!!! I recommend it to anyone thinking about a great modular system.
The Walking Dead boards looked FANTASTIC!!! Wish I could join the bootcamp.
Wow the shanty town is awesome!
Two days later and I’m still reeling from the fact that there is someone in the world who hasn’t seen Escape to Victory. Should be a capital offence.
Excellent weekender. Just became a back stager. Cheers guys
It does look sweet. Makes me want to finally finish painting my army.
Shanty town looks great! Crossing my fingers…
Nothing like WW2 what-ifs!
I am definitely going to have to invest in a deep cut studio mat and really really really looking forward to Sea Lion!
The Battle Systems Sci-Fi terrain is perfect for so many different games. 40K. Infinity, Star Wars, Hordes, Antares, etc. Awesome stuff!
so many good KS these days!
Arrrgghhh…. cant…afford…everything…. damn you all and you fancy trinkets
Awesome stuff
That terrain is pretty slick! #TrumpTrain2016
I’ve gotta get some of that battle system terrain and deep cut studios mats, it’s too good!
Historical ‘What ifs’ are fast becoming my favorite way to play historicals. Vikings in America, Nazis invading England, Nazis after 1947, Cold War gone ‘Hot’, Samurai versus European knights, etc. Great stuff for the wargamer and the imagination alike!
Kickstarter just gets hotter and hotter. I’ve done Bloodrage, Zombicide Black Plague, Conan, Massive Darkness, Walking Dead all out War, Wargaming the movie, Warparth II and now Mythic Battles. All I need to cap it all off is a game set with great miniatures in Ancient Egyptian and Celtic Mythological world and I am will be complete.
Another great show and I can’t wait for the weekend and all the lovely walking dead goodness coming from all of you. GRRRRRR AAAAAARRRGGGGGG!!!!!!
Not had the time to catch up with the Weekenders! All the videos to watch!
Would really love that Urban terrain. It would work perfectly for ‘This is not a Test’.
Way too cool!
haaaa ,… if only I’m near to england… -_- nice show as usual
Have to say that since I joined beasts of war backstage, my infinity game has changed completely. I’m truly glad I found you guys.
Still cant believe Justin hasn’t seen escape to victory…
I’ve just signed up for the Battle systems core pledge, their stuff looks excellent, as does the shanty town, which i think would fit in well with the sci fi stuff . I recently purchased some of the Anvil industry Afterlife models, they’re sooo good and will go well with my pledge. I’ve always loved card terrain, but this stuff looks so durable ! Imagine a ww2 ruined town in this terrain, they say it may be on the drawing board for the future. I am more than old enough to remember escape to victory, but prefer Kelly’s heroes, what a classic !
I’ve got the first Battle Systems Sci-fi kickstarter set and they are awesome. Great stuff from these guys for sure!
The boot camp setup looks fab. Waiting to paint up my Kickstarter figures after making some new terrain
Keep up the good work
Battle Systems look great for War of the Dead and This is not a Test
I could always use another BS Shanty Town!
that shanty town looks amazing!!
Love that
Been loving the Re-Roll magazines. It’s a great way to review the month in gaming and a fantastically high quality. Keep up the awesome work!
Ugh! Don’t chew up greenstuff like chewing gum. It’s toxic.
Loving the Battle Systems terrain too. V tempted to get in on the Kickstarter this time around. Pre-painted goodness
That terrain is shiny.
Love them!
weee, great show
Those Walking Dead tables are a treat.
love a bit of “what if”
@oriskany
No need for apologies. I didn’t know the answer . I was wondering like in the case of WW1 the ANZACS were just shipped straight to Cairo for the Western Desert campaign. Not sure if any. NZ units fought in the Western Desert though
No worries, @torros . I was putting together one of the next battles in the campaign, referred to a map I’ve found that showed British / Commonwealth dispositions as of 11Sept40, and right where I was ready to set up the game, I see a great big “NZ.”
And I thought . . . “wait a second, SOMEONE was asking about this, and I remember telling them there were no Australian or New Zealand troops in GB at the time . . .”
Of course we’ll never be 100% perfect, but we really DO try to get these facts straight. 😀
Great video
Seeing your arses in super hi-def? How could I say no. Yearly backstage here I come.
Late to the party here (I was on holiday) but I finally “get” re-roll. It was handy to have something to read without incurring roaming charges. Although @warzan you’ve said “no more ‘on the toilet'”, I was reading it in the queue for a go on a solid gold khazi.
For art, y’know https://www.guggenheim.org/exhibition/maurizio-cattelan-america
Anyway it’s a great one and I’ll keep downloading em!
May your weekend be filled with hobby.
Backer of the Deep Madness KS here…now the wait begins
Late to the party – playing catch-up due to the Walking Dead boot camp 🙂 Have a couple of the Deep Cut mats and they are awesome, thoroughly recommend investing to anyone who may be sitting on the fence with regard to picking one (or more) up…
nice bundle, sir ;o)
I’ve picked up a couple of mats from Deepcut Studios and I can’t recommend them highly enough!
Beasts of War merch would be fabulous – though possibly not that hideous green monstrosity!
Right I’m off to figure out what game i can squeeze those Geladan into!
Awesome show! Definitely sold on the mythic battles game, there’s so much I want at the moment!! Now to hind my bank statements from the wife
Keep those article series coming, Oriskany!
So who won the Battle Systems Shanty Town set?
Was it me?
Please let it be me!
=)
I’m liking the dice bags!
definitely need to look at the Battle systems stuff. Seems like it’s pretty applicable to a lot of games!
The battle systems shanty town looks great I already have the Urban Apocalypse set and am looking foreword to using it with the Walking dead all out war game once I am able to pick up a copy, I also think the shanty town would work well for Infinity would live to try a game using it.
BoW bags.. this looks awesome. When it will be redy to buy? Also you guys… another epic prize this week. Wow its like christmas earlier and you dont need to waste cookies and mikl on fat guy in red suit.
