Blood Bowl’s Dwarf Team & Star Players Looking Epic
January 4, 2017 by brennon
Games Workshop and Forge World were showing off more of what's on the horizon for Blood Bowl this year as they took a peek at the awesome Dwarf Team and some Star Players too.
The new team was shown off in its fully painted form at the Open Day at the beginning of the week and they truly are looking superb. I am most certainly going to be picking them up as my team of choice.
It's nice to see a set of Dwarves with a bit of motion to them as we're so used to them standing stoically still as they await the charge. With some rather flashy beards you get a sense of them at play.
Additionally, we also got to take a look at their impressive Death Roller which will be squishing goblins into a thin paste on the field of play.
I always found them somewhat temperamental and usually a waste of your gold but they are good fun.
Star Players & Leagues
We also got to see some plastic Star Players that are also on the cards. It seems like each of them is going to be available in blister packs and will allow you to bring some famous faces to the tabletop.
Interestingly while we're seeing some blasts from the past here the folks behind Blood Bowl seem to have their sights set on rookies and casting a whole new breed of star player with the Blitzmania League on the horizon.
More details are forthcoming but all you need to play is the core box so that's a good start.
What do you think of these new players?

so glad it’s back, few things make me as happy as the dwarf roller
Oh! The dwarves are one of the few teams I don’t already own… I wasn’t hyped by the look of the human or orc teams but the skavens and the dwarves look really good!
Unfortunately for any Blood Bowl veteran owning some of the old teams the new models are completely out of scale…
Take a look at the orcs and especially humans: https://scentofagamer.wordpress.com/2016/12/17/blood-bowl-then-and-now/
Thanks for pointing that out @nikkel ! Ouch…
Wow – that’s scale creep on steroids!
The difference is really clear to see! But, (have to get a but in here, sorry) Does it make much of a difference to the game? Obviously not in mechanics but in terms of laying out a board game and playing it? Is it just a visual thing?
Right now I can say it wouldn’t bother me one bit but then…. I haven’t played it with two different generations of mini’s 😉
Unless you’re mixing and matching generations of teams, surely scale creep doesnt make any difference to your game?
Not sure – I’m thinking of the new dwarfs combined with an old human or elf team will just look odd…
Well… It’s more a boardgame than a wargame so people could play with cardboard standees for all I care. I myself play with a lot of proxies. I converted almost all the teams I own and as long as your opponent can easily identify the different players, I don’t see any problem.
I think that Deathroller sums up nicely what I think GW do well and what I don’t think they do well anymore. Technically it’s a very fine model, but the deathroller was a gloriously OTT, whilst this is totally po-faced. With all the changes the new regime is making, I hope they will manage to find their sense of humour again.
Yeah, I tend to agree with you here – the sense of humour is gone from the artwork and the rules. Everything seems to be super serious now – there’s no sillyness anymore.
Fingers crossed that the halflings and goblins get the comedy treatment when they come out!
Not sure I agree. Maybe you mean just the deathroller itself, but the overall model has a dwarf holding a pint of Bugman’s whilst crushing a goblin who is comically holding out a pleading hand. It made me laugh anyway. Also the scale of it compared to it’s base I find quite amusing , so I’m not sure how much more humour you can fit into a model….or at least I certainly don’t feel like the original had more of it.
I was thinking the same thing. Having a guy operate heavy machinery with a pint in one hand just points out some silly machismo fun.
Liking the dwarves a lot 😀 . The star players are looking good too. And i agree with @redben and @zombieking about them not forgetting the humour that has always been a big part of BB.
I still think the humour is there. Jim and Bob are still providing the commentary. The whole game is incredibly tongue and cheek, and they have kept a lot of the original artwork in the rule book. I can understand what you are saying that the death roller is a little serious, but that morg n thorg is spot on.
Yeah mate I agree with you in the side boxes of the Bloodbowl rules and the season 1 book there IS a lot of humour. In the Ref models there is a .lot of humour. … and look at that we goblin being decimated by the death roller … friggin’ hilarious.
Team itself and Steam Roller look really good but those star players not so much.
Ben mate, my personal experience with Bloodbowl is all units are tempermental when you absolutely need them to succeed at something they will snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. The expensive ones are worse than the cheap ones…………sigh it’s part of the games apeal…honest…….I keep telling myself that ……*look when the #$$%%% lines is open and you have to get at least 2 on one of the two rolls of the dice would it kill you to catch the $$#%@ ball?? Really please…..your’re a $%# catcher … twice in a game …..*sob …TWICE IN ONE GAME!!!!!!….. *ahem ….. Nah… Read more »
Agreed, theres no such thing as good luck in a bloodbowl season. Even if you have hundreds of completions/touchdowns/knock outs under your belt, eventually, you trip over your own feet, fall into the crowd and get smothered to death between the bum cleavage of an ogre cheerleader.
…. That last sentence ……….sigh ……..it’s my fantasy………..Thanks AJ for making my day 🙂
Meh. I can do without the Deathroller. And also without Star Players, to be honest. Learn to play your team and work around your weak spots.
Want, want, want! Dwarves look like they could be mounted on the smaller old school bases
Look, GW did a lot of good things last year that I never expected, but I’ve got to say that the release schedule for BB is far too slow. How many BB teams are there? 36+. I guess if we just go by what is in the Season 1 book, Skaven, Nurgle, Dwarf, High, Dark, Wood and Union, then the number is reduced to 9 (the other 2 coming from the boxed set), but still, you’d have thought having more teams would have been made available at or close to launch. BB evidently sold well, but only having 3 teams… Read more »
If they kept all of the old teams, there are 21 of them. I know there were also 3 “un-official” ones which were NAF approved…
Yeah, disappointed a little that there are still only three teams. I’m not interested in the ones that have been out so far. We’ve a league starting soon, I’m just hoping the dwarves come out in time!
I played Blood Bowl a little bit when it was originally released. My 2 favourite players for no particular reason. Nobbla Blackwart (Goblin with a chainsaw) and Lord Borak the Dispoiler (Bad ass chaos lord type).
So any idea when I can get my death roller (which will fail me every time I need it to perform)??
Damn ..Forge World just did it’s January releases which are 30K/40K Knight heads and transfers (boooooo) and Hobbit Iron Hills Dwarf Command (yay!!!!) … but no Blood Bowl stuff….. 🙁 Does Forgeworld do Monthly or fornightly releases ??? (he asks hopefully)
@beardragon14 don’t think they are on a fixed schedule check websites Friday evening (in non-future locales) Seeing the dwarves has changed my mind on them. Star players are really nice as is the ogre one exception would be Varag the orcs have really suffered in my opinion for lack of character. Technically fine but boring to me. Although I have grabbed a human team from the new box. There are lots of aspects about the release that I am not a fan off, such as no expansion packs on release although they are coming. However, pleased it’s doing well early… Read more »
Thanks @dags. So living by in the future, I should check Saturday morning then?? Very handy timing 🙂 I do have an ulterior motive, as I have a forgeworld free shipping voucher that I need to use before Jan 31 and do I blow it on the stuff in store available at the moment or do I wait with the order for some more stuff to be released, This has all been since I’ve decided forgeworld can expect an at least bi-monthly order from me since it is the cheapest GW stuff I can get atm (Oh I will still… Read more »
Sorry @dags , My full stop interfered with your mention call out. could you please read my earlier post and answer if time allows ……..*sheesh* I only ever make mistakes that I want fix in blog posts never forum posts where I can edit them …..*sigh
@beardragon14 I do it all the time. Yeah Orcs and Humans going to be released separately. Also James mentioned position packs – so 4 resin – something like 2 blitzers, catcher and thrower for about 20 quid – no date but will expand the teams
Cheers for the info mate …and thanks 🙂
@dags No mate you were right Saturday morning and new Hobbit ogres. Thanks so much for the insight. I am going to leave it one more Saturday and order at least the dwarf command and the two ogres (I know you blokes think these are expensive but by comparrison to what we pay for Gw plastics these are fabulous value) Cheers and thanks again
