This week a few of the team are off on their holidays but we look at some awesome gifts sent in by the community and get to view Lloyd's holiday snaps...prepare the slides!
Flames Of War Hobby League
Over in our Projects system, you can now get involved with the Hobby League for Flames Of War which is running from now until September.
Your aim is to work alongside friends, clubs and stores in order to slowly build up your Flames Of War army, aiming to get to 100 points by the end of it. Then, you'll be able to join us for a grand campaign that we're putting together in October.
Make sure to get involved and check out the Battlefront Miniatures website for more details as well as registering stores where you're taking part with our Places system.
Updates & Lloyd's Holiday Snaps!
We've got a few more updates worth delving into...
- Call For Community Writers - We're looking for folks to come on board and volunteer their skills for article writing on a whole range of subjects. You can Submit Your Ideas Here
- No Weekender Next Weekend - With Justin and Gerry off in America at Historicon we won't have Weekender shows for you next weekend
As we mentioned earlier there's also a chance for Lloyd to show off his holiday snaps after his trip away to Valencia. He got to visit a rather epic museum and was soooo close to getting to view more toys too!
News
Come and join us for a look through some of the news that caught our eye this week...
- Kings Of War 3rd Edition - Mantic Games have their sights set on a new edition in October

What was it that caught your eye from the news this week?
Kingdom Death: Monster Player Boards!
We got a lovely gift from the community this week in the form of some Player Boards for use in Kingdom Death: Monster. Sam has shown these off to Chris from Darker Days Radio and we'd love to use them in our next filming session.
Gyuri Boda from Hungary sent these in from Etsy. You can find them HERE. There are also lots of other cool accessories online from designers like FancyButFunctional and PlayYourBoards. Make sure to check them out and see if something grabs your attention.
Kickstarter
We have three different campaigns to look at this time around.
- Kodama 3D - A wonderful 3D take on this tree-building game by Indie Board & Cards
- Bleak Spirit - A different take on the roleplaying game genre with a twist towards storytelling and fascinating lore
- Battle Systems - We take another look at what has been unlocked for their Fantasy Wargaming Terrain project
Make sure to let us know which of these you'd back in the comments below.
Competition - WIN Hit The Beach
We are hoping to get you stuck into Flames Of War with us by offering up Hit The Beach this weekend on the show. Get commenting below for your chance to win.
We have also announced the winners from the UK Games Expo and the winner of the Conquest Core Set. So, head on over and Claim Your Prize.
Justin Goes Viking!
As a special treat, we're rounding out the show with a look at Justin's Viking adventures at UK Games Expo this year. Make sure to check it out and let us know if you'd be able to take on a bloke swinging around a Dane Axe!

I stay up way too late. happy weekend everyone
It’s the Weekender!
Brother Lloyd returns from his Holliday.
I’m stoked about the Flames of War IV Hobby League.
MiG Alley Set looks like a winner.
Kings Of War 3rd Edition, right about time for it!
So much goodness.
On with the show!
It’s the Weekend, and boy have I earned this one…
Dune:
Frank Herbert book 1965
David Lynch movie 1984
Amiga rts 1992
TV mini-series (not movie, Justin, but close) 2000
New Movie due 2020
Iron Maiden – To Tame A Land (Song based on the book) 1983
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_y3o4okKXMU
When anyone mentions Dune, I automatically think of this song. Don’t know if it is true or not but Frank Herbert wouldn’t give the band permission to call the song Dune, as he didn’t like rock music – quite possibly an urban myth, don’t know. I will stop mentioning this song when I have converted you all to Iron Maiden fans!
I heard the same. Herbert not only disliked rock bands, but especially disliked Iron Maiden.
With regards to the BS Fantasy Terrain clips, at the moment the standard grey clips might stand out a bit on the browner graphics, but new colours have been hinted at in the KS comments! Look closely at some of the pics and so e are coloured, but that might just be marker penned or prime sprayed grey clips.
I’m going to have to check out One Page Rules.
Thanks for the suggestions!
Any another great prize!
Heads up on the Footsore Saxons
“We are offering our new Late Saxon Huscarls as an Advance Order. This is not something we normally do but due to being bombarded by people asking to buy them right now we have relented. Not in our release schedule until the latter part of this year, we will take orders this week until Sunday 7th July 2019. All advanced orders will be shipped THE LAST WEEK of July 2019 as we are going to have to shoehorn the production of this miniatures into our already tight schedule.”
So get your orders in today or tomorrow or you’ll have to wait until later in the year!
Good to see Lloyd hosting the show again.
Disappointed in @brennon for calling railways, railroads and even more disappointed in a fellow train nerd, @lloyd for not correcting him. While the colonists may claim to have won the first American Civil War and then incorrectly called it a War of Independence, we can’t let them win the English language by calling things railroads, sidewalks, and trash cans! (please note this post is soaked in jest and only intended to offend American’s with no sense of humour 🙂 )
So they took your railways too, not just the airports?
Only achieved in 1776 due to their Space Force capturing our communication satellites…
Great to see Lloyds photos and its probably a good job GW was closed or he would have ended up with yet another box of skeletons!
Looking forward to seeing more projects appear for the FoW Slow Grow League and it will be interesting to see if some articles from community members.
The Weekender is here 🙂
happy Saturday mate! 🙂
Does anyone know how that fantasy terrain matches up with the Dave Graffam stuff?
Design wise? or Scale wise?
I suppose scalewise you can adjust the print before printing to match the BS stuff.
Yay 14th!
Woke up tired this morning, thought I was late for work realised it was Saturday sat back and watched The Weekender.
It’s the wkend wahooo, now just have to wait to get the kids in bed to carry on building my team Yankee. God damn it lol
Strangley excited about Lloyds holiday snaps…..
it’s an extra happy weekend.
received my delivery from OTT .flames of war
o yes and something small has arrived too, my granddaughter was born at 5:50 am ???.
curious what justin likes the most fight, play board game or drink honey wein (mede ).?
does anyone know what the viking board game called that justin played.
a happy weekend for everyone?
congratulations mate!!!!! a very happy Saturday indeed 🙂
I believe it is called Hnefatafl, but chances are I am very wrong. The only reason I know this is a like watching wood working videos and loved the one below. Please don’t ask me how to pronounce it!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iiHlAa131NI
Indeed it is, sometimes called ‘Viking chess’ or checkers… but that name could apply to other games.
Ranked 2,577 on BGG and dated around 400ad.
https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/2932/hnefatafl
Looking at the equipment in the museum I presume it was mostly Spanish Civil War stuff
A bloke with a dane axe ?
Run away
Justin with a dane axe ?
wave some vegetables or a dead spider on a stick … 😀
(yeah … I can be real evil when I want to)
lol spider on a stick lol
I can just see the outcome lol
So Nice to chill on a Saturday morning with the weekender, but looking forward to the Historicon coverage next week.

That Dane axe could really cause some damage. Little wonder the use of them was so wide spread in the 9th/10th centuries.
That museum looked very interesting. Shame about the GW and yes I do the same thing Lloyd whenever I travel.
In regards to FoW I want to know when the lists are going to open up again. I want to be able to make obscure SS Units, Elefants, Hungarians, ME262’s and maybe even a Maus.
English were still being surprised by them in Ireland much later than that.
My history is probably terrible here, but as far as I can remember the Dane Axe or Sparth Axe was being used well into the 16th Century by the Scots and the Irish.
When I was doing the reenactment and from what I’ve read the guy with the Dane axe gets one chance at killing you after that they should dead given all the momentum they need to swing the thing it would leave them defenceless. They were much better at taking out horses
Interesting stuff. The way I have had it explained to me was if, for example, a Gallowglass was fighting with a Sparth Axe, he would have been fighting as part of a Sparr (sp?) and would have had a couple of Kerns at his side, perhaps armed with pole arms, swords or missile weapons. I’d sort of assumed they fought like this to protect the Gallowglass until he was ready to swing the axe again or draw his sword.
I was really talking about Vikings/Saxons etc rather than gallowglass which I don’t really know about
The strange thing about a lot of 2 handed weapons is how they were used in close quarters. Great swords were often used to cut the legs of pikemen by crawling under the pikes until they got close enough to slash out at their legs. Spatha axes were used like halberds, chopping up and down rather than swung about. I imagine in closely packed units they would be largely useless unless used like that.
Great episode as usual
I play Gloomhaven and I can’t help but think that MDF character sheet thing is massively overkill and only serves to conplicate things and take up too much space on an already crowded table (I already have trouble fitting the snacks on the table). Each to their own I suppose. It does look very fancy.
Great show guys! Really looking forward to the Dune board game.
In an effort to get an un-Irish response from the taciturn and stern @avernos I recommend we sponsor a sack and crack wax for him with his face on camera……..@warren I believe you should also get involved due to a lack of weigh ins!
git
dont even suggest it lol
Bless the Maker and His water.
Bless the coming and going of Him.
May His passage cleanse the world.
May He keep the world for His people.
Happy weekend.
Happy weekend everyone.
Finally got to see Justin take the Dane axe to the knee.
I went along for the OTT meet up at UKGE and Justin’s injury took him off to bed early….
…. or it might have been @warzan offering Justins Bed to other people 🙂
lol
Gherkins are the finest food. Shame on you Justin!
Very excited about the hobby league. Also very excited to see the coverage of Historicon next week. I suspect it will be more sedate than Gencon, but far more informative.
Split a box…. I hear the words yet they do not make any sense… give minis away? oO What witchcraft is this?!
I could never do that either! ?
He/She who passes with the most minis WINS!!!
Loving the look of the battle systems stuff, and can’t wait to see what changes in KoW 3rd edition
Saure Gurken are great! Breakfast of champions! Best eaten when you have a hangover. Just like rolled pickled herring. GREAT STUFF!
yeah … I think what you’re referring to is what is called “Rolmops” in Dutch.
picked Herring rolled with a slice of gurken and unions.
Wiki says it all :
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rollmops
I’d prefer regular herring with onions myself. hmmm
It’s Rollmops in German too but that word would have gotten everybody “HUH?” XD
the word might, but at least it wouldn’t have gotten to puke like those insects … 😉
Serious question to @dignity Is a fantasy version of Core Space not really the same as Frostgrave? I don’t play either but it sure sounds a lot like it.
Nooo Core Space is a LOT different from Frostgrave. Main feature of Core Space is the addition of a third party AI faction that chases you off the board (rather than a single beastie). So you’ve only got a short period where it’s safe, but then that chest is just a move away and there might be good loot in there (do you gamble and push on for it?). Combat isn’t as random as Frostgrave (opposed d20s), in core space it’s harder to take a player character down.
AH, ok. I see. thanks for the enlightenment. 🙂
The Battle system terrain looks really nice hope they do a WW2 one, those game aid look really use full.I loved the Dune Amiga Game also.
What a great show ?
The battle systems terrain does look really good.
Happy Weekend!
Mig Alley seems a blast and I can’t wait to have my hands on those models, paint them quickly and have a go. As for missles Korea won’t be too concerned about that aspect as most of the work was done through cannon and machine gun. I don’t think that guided air to air missiles were used much if any at all.
FOW hobby league? AAAAH FLUFF!
Me that was trying to pull my 40k armies to 2k points and get bolt action armies up and running.
Not mentionning that there is Team Yankee V2 soon.
A wargamer work is just never done is it 🙂
As always guys, thank you the show was grand.
Oh and seeing @dignity being his best viking was awesome, you did real good with that sword
This hobby league for Flames of War is a great idea.
It would work great for me.
I have to see how many models go in a 100 point army.
So with the Hit the Beach set, does it come with sea cucumbers? Or are you hitting a beach where sea cucumbers live?
Attack of the sea cucumbers!
Happy weekend tabletop gamers 🙂
Not too shabby as always 🙂
Justin has a fear if pickles?
Been a while since I’ve had the time to watch a full Weekender. Great show and damn you for the constant temptation to buy some Katyushas!!!!!
Poor Justin lost against Vikings.
A proper general would pick his battles on his own ground.
A naval battle against cucumbers.
To be fair, losing to the Vikings is fairly historically accurate 🙂
a brilliant weekender especially the end with Justin fighting well done man.
Another Weekender, another great show
seen this on facebook.

Am already psyched for Kings of War 3rd Edition. I better dust those werewolves off and start painting.
You mean? Is it really true? After a year’s hiatus (ostensibly) you’re returning to filming KD:M playthroughs?
1st thing DUNE brilliant film, then CHILDREN OF DUNE.
those sea cucumbers look tasty
Looks like I’ll have to get a project fired up for the hobby league, going to have to pull the trigger on my battlefront order.
That was a awesome looking museum based off those holiday photos, if I’m ever near by I’ll have to try to go have a look.
Joined the Battle systems. I too really loved the streets, it was actually one of main reasons I went for the KS
Happy weekend gamers ?
Looking forward to the what the Battle systems kickstarter unlocks, well done Justin on surviving your time as a viking
These flames starters look pretty decent for options
NOT impressed with the Privateer Press business model for their mini crates. FOMO strikes again, no real reason for this other than to pressure the customer into buying. Do we really need such hard core marketing gimmicks in our hobby?
Hmm, the KDM boards look cool, but too big.
Man that starter set looks great. Lots of models. I’m really excited for Mig Alley and Korea though. Already have them preordered!
Dune looks interesting. I played dune 2 on the Amiga class game. Basically command and conquer with sand worms. But it’s made by the same company so no surprise there.
Interested in how companies do their slow gro or campaign systems.
great weekender, always good to see @lloyd in ‘control’ lol. And @brennon is such a professional 😀
Oh noes I missed the weekender at the weekend
so I’ve got to catch up now in the week
Damn you Justin – you are making me want to play historical. I’m sure we have had a conversation about me never coming to the dark side 😛
A great show as always chaps an ideal distraction from the sad news of a loss of a friend yesterday. The first viewing of the XLBS went past in a blur masked by my shock now ive had chance to listen properly today things have registered properly and ive had some peace with a cuppa.
Never assume folks your friends will be there tomorrow get sidetracked by your own issues or put off a visit or phone call life has a nasty quirk of showing you your wrong to do so and bites you on the Ass.
Quality editing here gentlemen!
The Hit the Beach is a great prize and really should help get someone lucky into the hobby! 🙂
happy weekender guys… great prize.. i really am interested in FOW
Great show guy
s, sea cucumbers are great when dipped in salad cream. You have to give it a go @dignity, youll wonder what all the fuss was about. The battle systems terrain look
s amazing, but as i have backed a lot of KS in the past twelve months im taking a break to rebuild my piggy bank.Justin the viking, does have a ring to it. Not as good as Ragnar Lothbrok, but a close second.
NOOOOOO!!! @lloyd my girlfriend is just about to finish a year in Valencia. I also arrived at GW while it was closed when I went to visit her – although I did manage to visit it the next time I went back.
But I didn’t know about either of these museums and now she’s about to leave!
I jumped in the Battlesystem because of the Road/ River design! Great show
Flames of War could be fun to play with the right people.
