December 8, 2018 by dracs
Welcome to The Weekender where we're going to be getting stuck into everything that's new with the tabletop gaming world from this week and hearing your thoughts too.
Weekender Podcast Download
As always we'd love to hear your thoughts and more on everything we're talking about today in the comments below!
Updates - Essen Prize Winners Announced!
We've now announced all of the winners from our Essen 2018 Prize Draw. Go and see if you won over on the Prize Claim Centre that we've set up and make sure to get in contact in order to win your goodies.
Additionally, we've also had moji from the community giving us a proper history lesson on 2000AD and it's time on the tabletop. You can check out both Part One and Part Two which give us an in-depth look at this comic book universe.
Forge World; Time To Change?
We all know that Forge World serves as a great way to provide alternatives for your forces in Warhammer 40,000 and such but is it time that some of the Forge World line-up became available in plastic?
With the release of The Hobbit book for the Middle-earth Strategy Battle Game Sam wishes that a lot of the miniatures they've designed would be transferred into plastic so that people could play the armies without the massive cost attached!
We postulate how this might then become the norm for the Horus Heresy and perhaps some of the existing accessories available for Warhammer 40,000 and Age Of Sigmar too. We'd love to see more plastic options available for the likes of the Astra Militarum & Adeptus Astartes!
News
We take some time to go through the news from this week...
- SWL Imperial Depot - Micro Art build some great new Star Wars terrain
- Krennic & Chewie - Not a new comedy duo but a preview of the new releases for Star Wars: Legion

- Peter's Paperboys - Fancy making an entire army for about £10?
- The Drowned Earth - A new campaign has launched and an awesome way to get into the game too
What did you think of the news from this week?
Looking Ahead With TTCombat
We sit down with the team from TTCombat to talk with them about what the future holds for their game ranges, be they Dropzone and Dropfleet or the worlds of Carnevale and RumbleSlam.

Let the Weekend begin!
Ahh its the Weekend.
Happy Weekend
@templar007 and @rasmus – glad to see I’m not the only one up way too late tonight. All Combat Phase finished for Darkstar, now finishing Resolution Phase. Sometimes this weekend I should be able to start Scenario Guidelines, Scoring, Tips, and Designer’s Notes …
Dare I say it … is there light at the end of the tunnel?
Oooh Scenario Guidelines!
The pairing of those two words sets off visions in my head of battles forming in space. With both sides uttering a murrmured pray followed by checklists of “GO — No GO”.
Silence falls as the last check is made. A ship captain waits for the signal and reviews in the mind the Commander’s intent.
The BATTLE COMMENCES…………..
Thanks again for sharing your game with us @oriskany
GENERAL QUARTERS, GENERAL QUARTERS!
ALL HANDS TO ACTION STATIONS!
SET CONDITION ONE THROUGHOUT THE SHIP.
THIS IS THE CAPTAIN.
THIS IS NOT AN EXERCISE.
The honor is all mine, @templar007.
We have a live game scheduled on-line tomorrow (Sunday) at 12 Noon EST (17:00 GMT)
If you’re interested in seeing Darkstar actually in play, ping me a PM with your e-mail address and I can send a web conference link.
A core set in plastic is the way forward but it’s already begun I think where just seeing it via the specialist games first , though would move a plastic full size warhound…..
Before Forge world goes mainstream maybe first they could release rules for using there Mechanicum stuff for 40K first, three years after saying they would. Just a thought.
Finally, the weekend.
@avernos, Just in case you missed it, FFG announced generic commanders for SW Legion back in October.
Details are here https://www.fantasyflightgames.com/en/news/2018/10/9/specialize-your-army/
I’d completely forgotten about them, I suppose because months later they’re still on preorder and not available to use yet. Gah! it feels like the release schedule is moving at a snail’s pace
Not hard to do, funnily enough @warzan had a bad feeling about SWL and their reliance on outside suppliers in the discussion on whether it would become as big as 40k and worried about the release shedule, add that to GW’s current mass releases and he is sounding like a profit again.
FFG announces the upcoming releases too early in my opinion. I get all excited about new releases, the forget about them for couple of months and only might pick them up if I notice them on the hobby store shelf. I wonder if this is a practise they’ve just copied over from the board game side or do they need to optimise the supply chain with the early pre-orders?
A plastic space marine Thunderhawk would be nice.
Nah, plastic Stormbird, and not the baby one they currently do in resin, the proper ones from the HH novels.
?
reset the clock!
The imperial armour books are amazing. Forge world should be left to be more independent from GW because they were doing it right
Some friends who by forgeworld is they buy stuff and have to spend hours putting it together and if you ring them all they recommend is using some green stuff to fill in joints etc. I would have thought if you spend the sort of money that forgeworld charges it would go together first time.
It a bit like going to IKEA and buying a table only to find it doesn’t go together and being told you’ll need to plane and chisel some of the legs and use some wood putty to make it usable as a table
same with any resin models, there is always going to be some work required to get them tip top. It is unfortunately the trade off for the detail level you can get.
I must be a jammy git, never had any problems but then I’ve never brought any of the big Kits.
Cant afford the mortgage.
It’s the Weekend!!
Only two more then I get a decent break…
I hear that!
I’m taking off from the Friday before Christmas to the day after New Year’s Day.
Most to time off I’ve had in nearly four years!
Hellboy Xmas…pah
What we need is Warlord to do the DR and Quinch Xmas figures that Alan Grant did as a two page wraparound in an early 2000AD
I’d buy that for a dollar!
Super awesome morning to you all from here on the south coast UK – the weekender has arrived – amazing prizes as always from super awesome peeps 🙂
Talking to Peter Denis on Facebook he is planning fantasy figures in the near future
WoW! Facebook is rolling out some powerful features. I looked up Peter Dennis and got…….
The Vice-Admiral Sir Peter Denis, 1st Baronet (1713 – 11 June 1778) was an English naval officer and Member of Parliament.
Sorry just had to share……please continue. ?
Great show as always. On Forgeworld models being mainstream, I am happy that low production models are in the range for 40k, however those models need to be in the mainstream codexes, rather than Forgeworld ones. I know it a monetary thing for GW, but it a pain whether playing games as you have books all over the place when checking stats etc during game play.
Thanks for the Weekender guys!
And, Happy Birthday!
Cheers!
Saturday is weekender time!
I don’t think it’s time for Forgeworld to go mainstream because the whole point of it is that it isn’t mainstream. It plays an important role for people who want to customise and bespoke their armies, and play in a non-mainstream space. For this reason i think it also plays a very important role for GW in retaining their share of our wallets as we mature in the hobby and, lets face it, get older with more disposable income. We want something unique to show for our hobby efforts and are prepared to pay to get a more niche product.
On that basis I do think that it would be great though if they had the resources to keep pace with the mainstream GW releases and get updated Imperial Armours out etc. If each mainstream army had viable Forgeworld units and different (but playtested) rules it would enrich the range and provide that bridge to keep people with their armies for life.
Additionally as a “specialist games” unit it’s fantastic to see the ability to get Necromunda, Blood Bowl etc back on the shelves in a way that will hopefully be sustainable.
I’m still surprised that FFG haven’t gone to the best resource for Rebel & Imperial troops, the old Rebel SpecForce Sourcebook – Different regiments of the Rebels SpecForce, and the infantry forces of the Imperial Navy, Imperial Army, and a hugerange of different Stormtrooper Legions (Rad Troopers, Sand Troopers, Sea Troopers, Storm Commandos, to name a few)
I need to look for this book!
Thanks @dawfydd
No worries. The full title is Rules of Engagement:The Rebel SpecForce Handbook.
If you can’t find a copy let me know as I have digital copy in my archive 🙂
Happy weekend peeps… looks like I shall be reviving the Dropbeasts team in the new year… especially as Milton Keynes is really close for me to get too @rasmus you Up for returning to your old stomping ground?
@commodorerob I’ll be there for sure! Well, unless there’s another snap general election at the same time…
Excellent although the way things are going with Brexit… You never can tell.
The lack of troop choices is one of the reasons why I haven’t jumped into Star Wars Legions. I’m liking what they’ve done so far with the range but before I jump in I want to see more variation.
Same here.
Enbiggened, now there’s a word. Looks like you’ve been enbiggened @avernos, when put across from @dracs ???
https://en.oxforddictionaries.com/definition/embiggen
A perfectly crummulant word.
we use it all the time, round our way.
He’s a grower, not a show-er.
XD
Happy Saturday!
Keep FW out of GW thanks 🙂
Their entire purpose was to create a boutique-style within the GW universes, and create content that was effectively gaming in the gaps (I know how Warren loves his gap-gaming). For those who want a “supported but not mainstream” army, FW offer a great way to do this.
In terms of Middle Earth, as Gerry said, it has to be financially viable to move it to plastic so until it reaches a tipping point with the potential to make the cash back it won’t move to plastics.
@brennon – FW have restated once again this week when asked about moving Horus Heresy to 8th Ed:
“There are no plans to change the rules for The Horus Heresy: The Age of Darkness. The Horus Heresy now has its own bespoke ruleset, which has its basis in the previous edition of Warhammer 40,000 but is now a game in its own right. Think of this as less a version of Warhammer 40,000 7th Edition and more The Horus Heresy: Age of Darkness 1st Edition.”
And if you look at the feedback from people after they stated this, this is a good thing! The vast majority of HH gamers don’t want to move to 8th as it is a less narrative rule set. With 8th being designed for and tested by tournaments, the narrative side of the rules is grossly lacking. HH has also become a last bastion for those who don’t want to play 40k any more, I know a few people who have moved into HH since the release of 8th.
Having spoken to the FW rules team back in Feb at the HH Weekender, they said they had 3 options:
1 – Split it into it’s own ruleset based on 7th Ed (no longer a 40k expansion)
2 – Move to 8th Ed
3 – Create an entirely new ruleset
Of these options, they want to stay with 7th (now AoD 1st Ed) until they have full rules for all legions/armies. Once that is covered they may look at where to go next, either build on the existing rules or something else. When asked about the “something else” they said, they’d much rather create a new bespoke system than move to 8th.
That’s some good info!
I’m glad it’s staying as it’s own ‘AoD 1st Ed’ rule set.
I’ve been toying with doing a HH age army, of course it will be my beloved ‘Imperial Fists’ if I pull the trigger.
I have no love for the current hard push to update to ‘primaris’ models in 8th Ed’on
@olliep & @brennon some point over the last year or so, GW posted videos of some talks that had taken place at one of their event weekends – probably a HH weekend. In the video(s) they talked about what they were planning and what they were doing and where this stuff fitted into the HH timeline.
They referred to a chart which had different ages across the top / different phases of the war, and then rows of different parts of the war – so one referring to stuff in the east, one which had Prospero on it, etc.
Do you happen to remember what I’m talking about? I’d love to have a look at the video (and specifically the timeline) again, but I can’t find it.
Like this?https://www.reddit.com/r/40kLore/comments/6gz1rf/most_recent_version_of_forge_worlds_horus_heresy/
@olliep – THANK YOU! That’s exactly what I was looking for!
This will help me organise my reading and my note-taking a great deal! And to work out how to paint my new Titans i.e. once I can work out where they fought, etc.
Thanks again!
I’d love to see some of the Droptroop guard come out in plastic. The current IG range does nothing for me.
try painting them as wehrmacht that’s what I’m doing and they look great. Using SS camo schemes for the elites really ties them all together ^^
Painting Splinter Camo or any of the other SS camo’s would send me oever the edge. But Field Grey is the way!
Oak leaf is remarkably easy to paint especially with a tooth pick. ?
Be interested to see some pic or you sneaking them into a weekender.
Great show, happy weekend, where’s Warren? Sorry, just rambling…..
Considering that FW products have become far too expensive outside UK because of price hike I do like idea of plastic kits of those FW kits sold by GW. It would also bring more variety to selection of GW with so many great looking sculpts for so many factions.
Happy Weekend 🙂 I really liked the Forge World discussion.
I love two things about FW now: ability to but models in my currency (the postage is a scam thou)
the fact that like for Blood Bowl and Necronunda you buy the basics through GW and buy single specialist miniatures from FW.
Yes it was nice to listen to a decent discussion this week
@dracs – little nitpick, but the Chaos Dwarfs haven’t been renamed to ‘Legion of Azgorh’ for AoS; LoA was the name of the sub-faction of CDs FW made for the Tamurkhan book. 😉
Star Wars? That’s the one with Captain Kirk right?
?
There were four IG-88s (or at least there were in the old EU, no idea about the new stuff); three were taken out by Boba Fett iirc (one on Bespin, two above Tatooine) and the four uploaded himself to the second Death Star and was destroyed when it blew.
Couldn’t you just get Warren safety scissors? ;p
Here’s an ambitious idea for TTCombat; how about making an mdf sandcrawler (with a suitable interior) to go with the Sandport range? Been thinking of kitbashing a bunch of their stuff to make one for 40k, but it’d run in excess of 60 quid and I don’t think I’m up to being able to pull it off, lol.
Speed Freaks is set on Vigilus isn’t it? How about having one or two tables having a track running through it so ork racers will show up at random and drive through the battle, running over anyone crossing the road? ?
yes speed freaks are there, in fact the whole campaign is called the War of the Beasts and was announced at the Vigilus Weekender… does anyone else get the feeling we’re being watched?
A huge sandcrawler would be fantastic done in layers so it could sit there or you could break it down and play through it….mmmmmmm lovely
Layers were what I had in mind.
Base layer: the tracks surrounded by a ‘skirt’ made from Fortified Trench Sections ( https://ttcombat.com/collections/sci-fi-gothic/products/trench-straight-sections ); would also require a sold block or something between the two tracks to add strength/support.
‘Ground floor’: Fortified Power Station ( https://ttcombat.com/collections/sci-fi-gothic/products/fortified-power-plant ). Possibly leaving the turbine/generator out of the inside so the room can be a cargo/passenger hold. And inside the stairs from the Gothic Walkways ( https://ttcombat.com/collections/sci-fi-gothic/products/gothic-walkways ).
‘First Floor’: use one of the Iron Labrynth sets ( https://ttcombat.com/collections/industrial-hive/products/iron-labyrinth-beta ) to form the walls (might need two sets, not sure). On the floor is the roof turbine from the Power Station, and the other turbine would be used here somewhere too. Because the Iron Labrynth walls are so thick, the stairs from the lower lever will probably ‘come out’ inside them, so hatched from the Door Hatches sets ( https://ttcombat.com/collections/industrial-hive/products/door-hatches-c ) would be used to provide access.
‘Command Deck’: on top of everything is a Gothic Bunker ( https://ttcombat.com/collections/sci-fi-gothic/products/gothic-bunker ) with the short walls being used as railings/crenellations. As I think the side doors would be right up to the edge (or close enough) then I’d have Sector 3 Stairs ( https://ttcombat.com/collections/industrial-hive/products/sector-3-stairs ) on the sides with other hatches from the above set on the outside of the Second floor at the bottom of the stairs. The roof behind the Bridge would have the large round decoration from the Power Station’s roof as decoration. Inside the Bridge would be Control Pannels ( https://ttcombat.com/collections/industrial-hive/products/control-panels ) for the crew to drive it with.
Beyond that it’d probably need the odd few details here and there (especially on the ground floor interior and bridge interior) and there’d need to be some sort of ramp at the rear so people can get in via the large door in the Power Station.
.
.
As you can see it’d be a massive undertaking, but if it could be pulled off it would make an eye catching centrepiece considering it’d mostly be a massive bit of LoS blocking terrain (think it’d be nigh on 10” tall) for games like 40k and SW Legion, but would also be excellent for games like Necromunda (Ash Waste Nomads trading vessel maybe?) with the accessible interior. And I’m sure TTCombat could pull it off way better and for cheaper if they were to make their own to their own design.
sounds good, it would be closer to 14″ tall and 26″ long based on the specifications given in the blueprints book.
If you’re referring to a scale Jawa Sandcrawler, I should clarify I was talking about what the above kitbash would come out as. 😉
I should also add that I have been considering an alternative; last night I found a 1/32 scale WWI German A7V mini online which has got the right sort of blockiness, but unfortunately would be too small (only ~4” high; although I suppose it could be a baby sandcrawler), although I am considering it for Adeptus Titanicus as a) don’t need an interior for that, and b) at that scale it’s the right size to be an immense vehicle (would also be good for converting up a Capitol Imperialis for AT come to think of it).
Been giving this more thought (perk of insomnia – you have plenty of time to think ?), and have had an idea to make it more viable to produce.
Initially make it with a blank interior (keeps costs down and no need to try and etch details to the inside side of the mdf pieces); people who don’t want to skirmish inside won’t care about a lack of detail and those that do want to skirmish probably have industrial terrain they can use to stand in for it for now.
Then at a latter date produce ‘buildings’ which are sized to fit snuggly inside each level. Essentially this’d be like producing a new building for them, but it’d be assembled with the details on the inside and the blank sides facing out. This has a few advantages; to start with they can produce a variety of themed rooms so people can customise their crawlers by picking out which ones they want and where to put them inside; and TTCombat can dual purpose them by selling them as rooms for Space Hulk/tunnel fighting/etc boards.
That last idea, a battlefield that also happens to be on a ork ace track, is so awesome. It needs to happen.
Living over in Australia makes the Hobbit Forgeworld Armies almost unplayable because of the price. I was so dissapointed GW never made the core units to the Battle of Five Armies in plastic. On a different note, Vigilus Defiant looks magnificent!
Hobbits in plastic? Yes, please.
That sounds like a speciality magazine you find on the top shelf at newsagents for those aged 18 and over?
No one mentioned HK-47. he always had the best dialogue in the The Old Republic games.
“Observation: I am a droid, master, with programming. Even if I did not enjoy killing, I would have no choice. Thankfully, I enjoy it very much.”
HK-47 was the best – MEATBAGS!!! lol
That’s the line! I keep thinking he called people ugly bags of mostly water but that was apparently the Crystalline Entity in TNG. I’m sure they would have gotten along well.
nice show again – great start to the weekend – painted two minis during watching you – only 1000 shows more to got my stuff painted….so approx in 10 years or so – but stop – what about this cool new kickstarter…..damned
hmm bloody hell I won something from the Essen comps, worth checking the list everyone
Aristeia Walls Terrain Set – laughingboy
Happy weekend everyone.
Thank you for another Weekender. Hobbit birthday Sam.
I suppose Battle of Pelenor Fields was the start of LotR going plastic mainstream. Perhaps they will keep producing box sets like in 40k and AoS.
I’m taking a serious look at Peter’s Paperboys. I’ve used paper figures from http://www.juniorgeneral.org to try out a number of different systems and using the pre-colored paper minis works out pretty well as far as suspension of disbelief goes. It’s a bit harder with flat tanks though.
@dodgyfarmer There is a lot available at Helion Book Company that Peter did for them that will most likely never make it to his own webpage
https://www.helion.co.uk/browse-title-series-more/paper-soldiers/paperboys-on-campaign/books-in-series.html
I’d love to see parts of Forge World go mainstream or plastic or affordable. Especially the 30k line, which, to me at least, is more interesting and fun than the general direction the story is moving in. If the 30k space marines and Solar Auxilia were available in less expensive plastic (mainstream = less expensive) then FW could even go back to the Great Crusade and start adding some of the more interesting Xenos, like the Megarachnids from Murder, and so on.
the Vigilus campaign is looking pretty interesting (just not as cool as the Great Crusade.) There is a certain logic to the way it is developing. However, if every 40k race invades that space, I suspect it will be a bit overboard. Especially if Hive Fleet Bulimia shows up and eats everyone in the end.
at least they’ll throw the armies back up afterwards
Apparently Primaris Space Marine’s extra implants exert a really strong type of nut resin that cause severe allergic reactions in all Tyranids.
Morning all,
In reference to Forge World I have never been a big customer simply because of the cost implications but I don’t see anything that jeopardizes the companies future. For all the reasons mentioned there are always going to be nooks and crannies in GW’s massive IPs that GW themselves just cannot fill die to production and marketing limitations.
From GW’s point of view the only other way to allow this sort of gap filling is some sort of restrictive third party licensing and frankly why would you look at this when you have a sister company already established and kitted out for the job which is already profitable in its own right.
In fact I imagine Forge World could do a roaring trade in acquiring licenses to produce other specialist miniatures for other games e.g. War Machine, Malifaux etc. The only obstacle I imagine is GW not wanting to invest their business real estate in the oppositions games.
I love Forgeworld but, most of its too powerful or is too expensive financially or point.
Yay! 2000ad! Thanks guys! As far as ForgeWorld is concerned, it allows GW to keep mass producing Space Marines and Cadians for the masses while simultaneously satisfying those of us who want to explore the universe a bit further without having to kit-bash an army (while trying to keep it GW legal).
cracking series so far matey
I cant wait to get my hands on that book! I really want to se 40K introducing a lot of primarchs
Heh. Frisking for hobbits. It makes me think. Everyone should have a couple of pocket hobbits.
Ooooh, ‘Pocket Hobbits’, that’s when you……..(looks around nervously)……whoops, wrong website. Never mind……. please continue with the chat.
Happy Weekender.
I really love Forgeworld, but I don’t love the prices. I miss the old GW where they kept all old models/casts and “never” phased out anything. But guess that is not a good financial option these days for a company.
I like @avernos ‘s haircut!
To paraphrase Al Swearengen from Deadwood …
There he is! Shorn and groomed to a friggin’ fare-thee-well!
Warren’ll never recognize you.
He’ll have to smell you all over again to know you were his.
Lord Wild Berry is gone!!!! all hail Lord Wild Berry
I’d like to see Kir Kano and Carnor Jax from the Star War Crimson Empire comic added to Legion
Really glad to see that Dropzone Commander is on its way back! man, I’ve been missing that game!
We’d need to use uni-cast or something similar, plastic cannot achieve that level of micro-detail yet. And honestly, if I was buying FW plastic at THOSE prices, I’d feel scammed. At least the resin is a more expensive material and more costly to ‘get right’, though FW have sent me a few naff pieces before.
Mainstream? I do not think that is the word you think it means. Go plastic yes. Lower pricing yes. But mainstream which to me might suggest FW make items not in the GW mythologies (Barbie, G.I. Joe, Pepppa Pig, etc.), hardly. Yet, stranger things have happened: once, at the last Games Day held in Chicago, I was told by a GW executive that there would “never be plastic Grey Knights.” Draw your own conclusions.
Honestly would love to see a force based off wookies forthe Syar Wars game. That might be enough to get me into it.
The prize claim centre page won’t load and gives me error 520.
Edit: it worked upon another try.
Interesting discussion about Forgeworld. I would like to buy The Horus Heresy series of books – but they are just too expensive for me and – dare I say it – unnecessarily over-produced. The “normal” Imperial Armour hardbook – without all the imitation leather and metal corners “collector’s edition” bling – would be just fine. And half the price…
Good to hear how TT Combat are developing as a company. Have my eye in the Tavistock Place building and the Fire Station for my Zombie Apocalypse table.
Anyway, here is my “Christmas Wish Comment” to the BoW / OTT Santa: a Weekender Special with the gang in “Warren’s Living Room Studio”. Christmas Jumpers and/or socks, a few chilled beers, a nice open fire burning… and plenty of hobby war- and boardgaming craik. What’s not to like?
On the first shot let every Space Marine die, on the second shot let every non converted GW model die, then play a mantic game. Did I win Vigilus?
I’d support that. I sounds like the month long campaign I ran in GW Belfast many moons ago, to wipe out the Space Smurfs in under a month. Good times
it would be awesome to see more units and variety for all the factions in 40 tbf it does feel more constricted than in the past despite the release of whole new factions. like gerry said the previous IG regiments were brill but then just got sidelined and whilst yeah there is scope for kitbashing and things it is a shame they show all these different regiments but without the ability to get them. Like the traitor guardmen in blackstone would be awesome if they rolled them out into the chaos range in general (mainly because im currently reading the gaunts ghosts books)
that being said 8th has been my fav version since I was never a massive fan of the to hit tables etc and do prefer its more streamlined feel.
happy weekender love the show I think Justin would be more dangerous than warzan with the scissors.?
Happy Weekend guys 🙂 I’d love to win that campaign book and an interesting discussion about Forgeworld. Btw. before the Hydra, the Valkyrie was a Forgeworld model, and of course the Baneblade as well
And the wave serpent for the eldar. There are doubtless others as well. It just shows that FW can be a good place to test things. I have two repressor transports for my sister’s. I’d love to see them in plastic….or to be honest just back in resin.
Happy Saturday boy
s and girls…………Dropzone and Dropfleet are getting a joint rules set, it
s been a long time coming and i for one will be getting it when its realised.Forge World do make lovely mini
s and its a pity they only ever made them in resin, now if they made them in plastic i think they would of had a bigger market than what they have.I mentioned last week that it’s possible we’d see Heresy Era models being the only non-Primaris astartes. To expand upon that a bit, FW did all those lovely resin models for HH. Then the Mk 3 and Mk 4 power armor (and Contemptor Dreadnought and Thosand Sons Rubric Marines) became plastic for the boxed games Betrayal at Calth and the Burning of Prospero. Then they became separate plastic squad boxes then the boxed games went away.
They seem to be doing well with those plastic HH models so maybe they’ll stay. I’d really like FW to do a completely different ruleset for HH. Maybe even one that drops I go – You go and incorporates alternating activations. Probably to much to hope for.
I tend to like games and game systems that make a deliberate effort to ensure player loyalty. Take Dust and Dropzone Commander as examples. Dust Studios continues to support models with rules and stat cards, even if they no longer make the model. And if there are multiple versions of the same model, usually heroes, they have rules for each version of that model.
Hawk Wargames took great pains with Dropzone Commander to balance armies between factions as well as individual units. They also made the attempt to keep old models relevant even as new models got introduced. I hope TT Combat will do the same.
Something I would like either GW or FW to do would be to print more transfer sheets for the less common space marine chapters. They’ve done it before and I don’t see any reason it can’t be a print on demand product or even a digital download you self print.
On a different topic, my FLGS is considering dropping SW Legion due to a lack of community (meaning sales). This rather surprises me as it went gangbusters when it arrived. Apparently X-Wing and Armada are still going strong.
Dropping Legion sounds like it has stalled due to its release schedule. I honestly think they would have been better served holding on for the summer and then releasing it with a larger selection and going from there.
The transfer sheet idea is interesting have you seen the online fan project that you can use to print your own.? More basic than a FW sheet would be but an excellent resource nonetheless.
I think you may be right about SW Legion. Much the same happened to Runewars, a game I love.
I’ve found a couple of fan made transfers for 40k but always looking for more.
GW did a limited run of obscure chapters a couple of years ago. Would like to see them do that again.
Just call this place GWOnTableTop Sheesh!
Happy weekend all!
Only watching this on Sunday as my Saturday was spent up at the visitors centre!
@dracs Congrats on the fully painted army! I hope you enjoyed the tournament, looks like you did!
@dignity Looking forward to seeing those Ultramarines! Was good to chat to you yesterday as always!
I finally won a convention prize. Shame it’s a Harry Potter one, but beggars can’t be choosers! My sister will be pleased!
Loved the TTCombat section, although the game I’m most interested to hear about is Relics – I can’t wait to see what they do with that universe (and I’m looking forward to resin Vaettir – the wings will be much less hassle on a resin model!)
I have a half-assed plan to get a 30k army, so would like GW/FW not to bugger about with it too much.
I think the droid assassin you are talking about from KOTOR is HK-47 :)Great conversations as usual!
I’m worried about warren with the glue never mind scissors.
Good to hear TTCombat is busy. Can’t wait for them to spill all those DZC/DFC secrets.
The 9th Age kickstarter looks good for anyone playing big battle games. The Acquitaines are definitely awesome. I feel the undeads, especially the vampires are a bit left behind in style and effort.
Love rumbleslam. Glad they are focusing on more rules as I really think it’ll benefit from them. Wi have to hunt out thr new expansions just for the pin rule. Although the game is great and there’s alot of models out for it. It can become abit boring after time.
I don’t have a lot to say about this episode other than please give me that book. Lol.
Nice to see BoW infiltrating vigilus and starting the war of beasts
Great show this weekend
happy birthday Sam.
i think forgeworld is moving into plastics with the specialist games like titanicus and necromunda. but with the death of one of the main writers of horus heresy. i feel it has lost focus on it. i also recall from one gw open day. i heard that most of the forge world team have been moved to focus on the specialist games.
Being an 8th edition convert to 40k the Forgeworld aspect has always seemed to be an overpriced site that has no impact on my life in 40k. I do appreciate that people that adore their 30k and 40k lore appreciate the extra effort that Forgeworld go to, to provide miniatures that GW couldn’t feasibly produce in plastic. I have been intrigued by the changes in their ranges though, because apparently they are no longer sticking strictly to resin, are making unexplained changes to their 30k offering and even diehard fans are confused by their direction and what their role is.
Only time will tell, but the support for the skirmish games like Blood Bowl and Necromunda seems like a winner; because for those that have fallen in love with the new incarnations of these games spending exorbitant prices for a couple of models is more palatable than trying to build a whole army at those prices.
uh oh someone one mentioned the Christmas Hellboy….. eek!
Imperial guard definitely needs an update.
Hope it is coming soon.
I’m making my own now with Mantic bodies and Anvil industries heads.
Have to start a project log.
Cannot wait for more ace Rumbleslam minis, the ref pack is great and really good addition to the game, TLC sounds awesome – it is a great fun game.
I can see the economic point of Forge World, given that the reality of getting the less common stuff being true but whole armies? Entire game ranges?
Kind of makes me think of the maxim “If you can’t afford to be in the business…”
I have never bought from FW myself but with the likes of Blackstone Fortress, Speed Freaks, Kill Team and Titanicus all coming out I have to wander if there is really the argument that this stuff cannot be supported (especially with 3D printing getting as good as it is, something GW seems somewhat behind on getting into). I would love to see should actual insider numbers on this stuff.
Great show. Idea: get Jerry to give updates for campaign sounds very interesting. Great prize as alwAys.
I reckon Forgeworld definately have a place! Thanks to them, I have my pretty Eldar Death Sleds! And other delightful bits and bobs!
Looking forward to the new dropzone stuff.
Love Dave’s work.
I only now am able to catch up…. WHAT THE FLYING SAUCER HAPPENED TO @avernos!? Is cutting hair mandatory at BoW?
Outrage!
I shall now headbang and mosh!
Happy hump day!
Late again this week, had to split the Weekender in 2 because of work and other activities…
I’m also late on prize claiming! I won an Essen day 4 prize! Gaslands mat! I missed it the first time i took a look at it… i was probably coffee depreived!
Too bad the weekend is over. The only problem I have with the new 40k campaign is my T’au are left out! [again]
Would love to see a Krieg Kill Team.
Happy Weekend All! Fantastic episode as ever. It’s a bit of a shame seeing what I have missed whilst I have been away from the hobby, as I think TTCon might have been a lot of fun!
Drowned Earth seems to be going from strength to strength, I hope I get a chance to get a game in at a convention before too long to get a feel for it.
