Happy Sunday!
Happy Sunday!!
That terrain kickstarter is sold out!
Warren! If you are loving ‘Vikings’, trust me, you will absolutely love ‘Black Sails’. I have just finished watching it, brilliant!
I’m really looking forward to it!
Anyone know if any of the Roman series are any good?
Rome is worth a watch, it’s a really good TV series, it’ll definately get you wanting to play a Roman campaign or two
Rome is awesome!! Titus Pullo and Lucius Vorenus (even mentioned in Caesar’s De Bello Gallico!!) totally rock 😎
Vikings is largely fantasy, at least they’ve tried to be historically more accurate in therms of costumes and general flavour of the show.
Two thumbs up from me!
Careful tho, this is gonna make you want to start building a complete legion..
THIRTEENTH!!!!
Surely any with the avatar name suetoniuspaullinus but Andy is right. I think Warren’s head may explode with the amount of gaming in the gaps opportunities and the amount of scenarios that can be generated from these TV series.
I am interested to see what impact warren watching Black Sails has for the upcoming Pirate stuff.
Couldn’t agree more, @suetoniuspaullinus .
Who can forget that “street gladiator” scene with Vorenus and Pullo?
THIRTEEN!
. . . chop, hack, slash . . .
THIRTEEN!
Ok on my must watch list!
Awesome scene 🙂 – The opening to that show was epic too. Man, need to watch it again.
I looked up that these on YouTube after watching XLBS . . . and then wound up binge watching the best parts of Rome the rest of the day. Seriously, the whole day was shot. 😀
I say best parts, because the series does admittedly have some threads that are less than fascinating. Niobi, the kids, Timon, Octavia and Servilia, blah blah blah.
More Ceasar! More Pullo and Vorenus! More Pompey! More Marc Antony! More of the Senate! Even little Octavian becomes a stealth-badass in Season 2 (I guess becoming the most powerful man on earth and the first Emperor of Rome helps in that regard). 😀
I agree Rome is excellent, brilliant show also Spartacus
If you want to do a pirate board, I suggest this set of mats by Cigar Box: http://cigarboxbattlestore.bigcartel.com/product/beachhead-3-battle-mat-combo-4-x6-plus-161
They are cloth and can be bought seperately but singe Blood and Plunder is both land and sea based you may do well on the set.
Now that is a Mat!!!
Happy Sunday!!
Talking of airbrushes and Christmas Justin… … … ?
An unpainted FoW force you say? … If only you had an airbrush and someone like John to advise you!
Yeah poor @dignity needs some time to get stuck back into that!
In the movie version of the RuneWars bootcamp, Lloyd is played by Al Pacino…
Iron warrior paint job great and should be easy to do.plate mail army painter primer with black panels filled in with a “big” brush @lloyd.
Dipped then anti shine , then some highlights and details. You should have a squad finished in say….a week?
The rest of us could have one done in about an evening.
@dignity mate. Quick Spanish lesson: “nada” means “nothing”, “de nada” means “you’re welcome” 🙂 Un saludo.
I mostly do my hobby in the weekend during the weekender show. It always gives me a few hours each day.
Well if you miss the live show it will still be available to watch at the weekend 🙂
I could watch it live, I hope and watch it again in the weekend then I have double the hobby time and have a recap of the content shown.
You asked for comments, Justin, so The Strain is trash, and not trash in a good way. Like an elaborate AAR of someone’s crappy rpg session.
Happy Sunday….. i have had a busy week and won’t bore you with my woes… but I pop on the XLBS and it’s like coming home . I haven’t painted all week .. bang .. 5 mins into it and I’m reaching for a mini and the brush …. i’m like Pavlov’s %^% dog. I have just paused it at the 32 min mark to say … thanks Lads….you have improved my week and got my hobby back on track. Cheers you keep me sane ….(well as close to sanity as I can feasibly aspire 😉 )
Aaaaanndd… relax 😉
Hobby night sounds fantastic and I have a ton of unpainted 30k stuff as well 😎
(Although I’d rather crack open another box of Romans right now 😉 )
Thursday works also for me as Friday is often relaxed and quiet at work..
Yeah I’m looking forward to the 30k stuff 🙂
I have the same concerns as Lloyd with scenery you build up and break down so will be interested to hear how his test at the Sunday gaming club turns out.
I quite like the look of the Vikings game. I especially like the board design and feel that it could be tied to other games like Saga. We often forget just how many counties the UK has and that would make a great campaign map.
@brennon I do love your colour scheme for your ethereal skeleton and understand your concerns of them being lost on a snowy base. I think a possible fix could be to pick some terrain features of a contrasting colour and then add a little snow to tie them together. Slate or black onyx like rocks might help, each of which have a different finish. The slate being more Matte if you wanted to keep with the effect you have on the model or the onyx black in gloss if you wanted that sharp mountain rock look. Both I think would work with snow but keep your model the star of the show due to the clear contrast.
I’ve gone with snow to tie them into my Daqan force but added some splashes of green into the mix as well as it really made them stand out a bit more. It’s kinda like a strange tundra look.
I would like to have done something with them being down in a tomb or something but that might have been a bit too much work.
I second @brennon‘s recommendation of the Lord of the Rings and Arkham Horror LCGs. I’m an especially big fan of the latter. You don’t need to be card gamer to enjoy these.
Very true – I reckon the guys would love Arkham Horror, especially with the way the tokens work and the overall feel of the game.
I’m enjoying AH so much, @brennon , I’ve taken to doing my own scenarios to fill the gaps between releases. Got the first one playtested yesterday 🙂
YES !!! WOOOLLLLSSSSUUUUNNNGGGGG !!!!! gimme date, gimme date, gimme date, gimme date, gimme date, gimme date, gimme date, gimme date, gimme date, I am coming for week @warren @dignity we will have our game finally ! @stusidle are you interested ? and take CJ with us !
I will be in touch 🙂
@warzan childhood illusions shattered after watching vikings and Rollo wasn’t like this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-bC_0KKWxaA
lol
Must be from the creators of Mr Ben right?
yeh the Mr Ben guys, Mr Ben would sort out all those ruffian vikings btw
Lol totally – while dressed as an astronaut 😉
The Lloyd comedy skit starting at 15:47 so funny. It looks like a concept clip for a scene cut from the Wolf of Wall street / Blow / or ScarFace . So funny. But what kind of snow is Lloyd so vexed about snow or ‘Snoooooooooooooooowwww’ 😉 😉 😉
?????
Nice one Lloyd
😉
Good show lads. A live show on a Mondy or Friday would be god.
Are you all going to Salute?
The haloween episode is where I learned from romeo what an upper decker is.
I could have lived all my life without knowing it.
I also won a battlefoam bag that night though, so I can’t be too upset.
Thanks for reminding me of the upper decker!!!!!! Lol
I got a name check!
Now if the logistics were easier I would be up for Wolsung in a heartbeat but … life being what it is – we will see
Hobby Weekend Ideas
FOW of course, Bolt Action, Lord of the Rings (I know it’s old now but who doesn’t love those models!)
How about a Viking/Sword Point/Kings of War Historical/Saga Army building painting weekend.
That would allow participants to do just about any type of sword and shield army from a multitude of periods.
Nice thing with KOW system since you can play both fantasy and historical against each other you’d have all kinds of cool match ups if folks want to play some games too. It is also very easy to play and thus makes it a very quick game. I think the KOW Fantasy/Historical Hobby boot camp would be awesome and very flexible for all as folks could pay other rule sets too if they want!!! (may give Warren that excuse he needs for his Ragnar Army!!!!!!)
Surprise I got interested when you said the V-word.
I might even go transatlantic for it
Holy crap, I just noticed my scowling mug is on the front panel! And that’s my M7 Priest and A12 Matilda II up there as well! Wow, thanks very much! 😀 😀 😀 😀
@warzan if you are so energized by the free love scenes in Vikings, then you are going to be knocked clean out by Black Sails. 😉 and maybe the word you were looking for is “fictional” rather than “fantasy”.
As for the very slow start of Black Sails, you need to wade through a bit of episodes to fully see the relationships and tensions begin to develop. Once the relationships are established the intrigue and betrayals becomes pretty engaging.
I find slot of the series take 3 or 4 episodes to really get into them, but these days they are 100x better than the movies being produced. (Or I may be getting old)
We may both be getting old, because I feel the same way. 🙂
Oh, and Frontier on Netflix with Jason Momoa is a gritty series with a lot of character conflict driven plot. A bit of the same knock-down-drag-out feel that Vikings has,
I think a Thursday night live feed would be awesome. I always have projects to work on, and as you guys stated motivation after a day of work is hard to come by. Looking forward to joining in.
Great XLBS
I love the Viking TV series and I’m about as far into the series as Warren. Really enjoying it. This has also sparked a resurgence in interest in Saga and I have finally painted up 2 4pt armies and played my first game this week.
Watch Black Sails. It is amazing, bit saucy in the early episodes 🙂 , but the action is great and the plot is intriguing. I am really looking forward to Frostgrave Ghost Archipelago and hope that North Star create a Pirate crew plastic box set.
Ben – The snow bases. Try some dirty snow. Mix a small amount of brown earth / forest floor scatter into your snow flock. You get the well-trodden snowy path look rather than virgin fresh snow. Also, some brighter green tufts on a small muddy piece of base will give you colour and not look out of place.
Hobby Night Live – yes please. I attended the Hobby weekend and really liked the opportunity to focus on a project. I still haven’t finished my army, because I was late getting my army dipped during the weekend. Once complete, which should only take a short while; I must get a pic of my finished army shared on Lloyd’s forum. Also need to send to Army Painter to get the money off voucher that they offered. 🙂 I will start painting my spot prize miniatures soon but feel the pressure not to waste the opportunity to do a nice job with an exclusive miniature. Thursday night sounds fine to hold the live night.
If we have another Hobby weekend I think you might want to set it around some methods of painting rather than a particular game. I think the last hobby weekend worked because we were being taught a technique, rather than being especially eager to play the new game. I don’t have an airbrush, but can see that using airbrushes might make a good focal point for a hobby weekend.
Then again, perhaps a game like Frostgrave where you only need to paint a 10 man crew and a few encounter table bad guys would be a cool basis for the weekend. I know that the tables are very terrain hungry for Frostgrave, but teaching attendees how to successfully use Hirst Arts moulds would be a cool element. Maybe getting to use the cast pieces on the last day as part of the tables.
Rules and too many games – No one says you have to buy them, but it does feel like there are so many new options that finding opponents for a game can be harder. You do get the extreme of some groups only playing 40K or only AoS for months on end, but the other extreme of playing too many different games doesn’t help either. You want to get your money’s worth by playing plenty of games of your latest purchase, but your friends have already moved onto the next big thing.
Rules wise, my favourite game of last year was The Walking Dead. So simple and yet every game I end up at a moment where I have to make an important tactical decision that really taxes me. Deep enough to keep coming back to it, but light enough to be easy to explain to new players. The industry sees the need for new blood and the consensus seems to be that simple low hobby intensive games will attract them. It doesn’t feel that the older, bigger games are being abandoned though. Thankfully. It feels as though the bite size games are just a vehicle to get you to commit to bigger miniature count and more hobby intensive games. They don’t seem to have their head in the sand though, because the games that stand out as bloated (by even their biggest fans) are getting their new versions to make the leap to the cash cow games easier.
@lloyd Im glad you went with the blue colour for the bases. Your skeletons look awesome! I’d ignore the advice you were getting on the show since your results show that you made he right decision.
What advice? Must have gone in one ear and out the other, to busy thinking about snow I guess 🙂
Hilarious video of Lloyd working on his minis made my Sunday lol.
hahaha Warren Trump 😉
Vikings; I love it, Absolutely love it. 🙂
AWESOME!!!!! Thank you very much!!!
Good show guys. Van Helsing is pretty good. You do need to get through a few episodes. By the end of season it is very interesting.
Card games can be quite fun. I’m also not a fan of the blind buys. That is one of the reasons I’ve never got into Magic.
I don’t think there are too many games. There is definitely shinny syndrome but the games that gain traction and a fan base will stick around. The games that don’t won’t stick around. I think that as the process continues it will be harder and harder for new games to gain the fan base they need to stick around.
Happy Sunday … just got to the end of this…. cool my big small Army got a mention:-)
Vikings is an awesome series, as is Black Sails( @warzan Black Sails was done by the same company as Spartacus – which is a Roman setting …lol)
I think Hobby Weekends for any significant new release or mini’s game is the way to go, mixing up the genres as much as possible. The biggest for 2017 probably being 40k 8th Edition, although that’ll likely be more a bootcamp than a hobby weekend.
great show everyone.
Looking at the spear throwers in RuneWars, all I can think of is the javelin competition segment in Revenge of the Nerds.
Justin could have a Hobby Weekend any time. Have him pay the 150 quid, bring an army to the shop to assemble and paint (no pre-work) and put him up at the BnB for a weekend. Remember to treat him like a stranger, of course. And then there’s John, who has Hobby Weeks.
I love the idea of hobby time. I find it difficult to paint, but about once every 2 weeks some friends come round and we chat, have a beer or 2 and paint. But when I am home and I am left to my own devices I normally just play video games or something. The few times I do paint I normally put on Twitch and watch someone else paint.
As for what you guys plan to do I’m sure it will be great, I remember the first BOW paint party (before turn 8 or the weekender) so how about paint party 2.0?
thanks for raising the topic Ben and for understanding the points i was trying to make.
low on comments this week, all this sunshine i guess. maybe one to discuses over a brew at a boot camp at some stage. while you obviously appreciated my style, well done for managing to wrestle it into a normal conversation.
i have really enjoyed the card game topic this past couple of weeks and i’m most intrigued by what the narrative style brings to the table. during by wanderings it lead me to discover the excellent looking Thornwatch, which went completely under my radar last year on KS. while more RPG than card game it offers much of what is being offered by FFGs narrative card games. i eagerly await its retail release later this year.
on the topic of RPG’s faith looks amazing.
i’m up for a hobby night providing circumstance allow. don’t know about you guys but i’ll be painting Infinity, Monster or possible a fairy or two.
i think it’s worth a punt. a massive online hobby group could end up being very cool.
i think it picking up the airbrush and having a dedicated hobby night will do wonders for Warren. you have a good eye for it mate and i feel the artistic side of the hobby is bubbling under the surface waiting to explode. in fact i think it would be good for the whole team as well as the community. having you guys involved gives the whole thing a lot more impetus.
i know i’m stating the obvious but given it would replace the weekender it will need some consideration on how to sustain it in the long run.
Lloyd mate fantastic job on the skeletons, got to say i prefer the warmer bone though.
if you can’t bring it back in line with the rest you’ll be able to grab some lose half painted ones on ebay soon enough. it was an experiment mate, don’t compromise on the look of your whole army just to integrate your experiment. it’s worth dropping a couple of quid to get the colour scheme right.
@dignity had to get Joking Hazard it’s brilliant. that game with Dave was a blast, had to get it
Just waiting for my copy to land in the post 🙂
Great job guys!
@dignity hobby weekend ideas, I’d love the see something like maybe Warhammer Quest, spend a couple of days in groups building and painting the models then a Sunday of cool gaming together with our newly built sets.
Or
something Sigmar or 40K related. Perhaps the new Wharhammer Community guys would be interested in it as well, they seem to be well out there now days!
Just my narrow minded GW view 😀
Enjoyed this weekender, I sincerely hope that @warzan is on the mend!
Speaking of Vikings, one of my favorite scenes is when a certain blonde haired viking stands on the boat yelling “UNNNNNNNNCLE!”
@lloyd – I couldnt figure out who you guys were talking about with the LED kits – are these for sale? (You and Justin discussed after the Nagash/Crystal Brush mini was shown)
@dignity For a hobby weekend, why not attendees bring their own models but maybe have your good selves and maybe the army painter guys their for tips and advise on existing collections… we all say we have too much unpainted stuff sitting about and for me I would rather hit that than a new collection/game setting. Would be interesting to see what everyone would bring. Or warpath… if you forced me!
I wouldn’t worry about the timing for the hobby live. As an Australian I always watch hobby blogs the day after they are filmed and when they are uploaded to Twitch or Youtube. Just make sure the end video is available to be watched later.
Media these days is all about consuming at our convenience so making it easy to get is better than finding that perfect time slot to get the most live viewers.
Really like the idea of Hobby Night Live. I do struggle to get motivated to pick up a brush. Reckon this will be exactly what I need. Hope its not a Thursday though, as this is my Gaming Club Night.
Don’t take my Weekender away! *sobs*
Can’t believe I’ve not been able to watch this until Thursday!
If you’re looking for Viking miniatures that somewhat look like their namesakes from the show, check out these leader miniatures for $20 add-on on their kickstarter.
