It’s the XLBS Show………..Happy Sunday Fellow CoGs!
I’ll be the first to confess that I have never picked up a “Wheel of Time” book. So, I’ll be watching the Amazon stuff, just like I did with the HBO “Song of Fire and Ice” series.
@johnlyons your dip into Battletech gives me a nostalgic feel. I am enjoying watching you get excited by the range.
@brennon fantastic job on the Fellowship. I did bid on some LotR minis during the week but missed the end of the auction and now I’ll have to scope out some more the try and snag. Looking forward to seeing your Moria Tomb set painted up. Will you be filming a ‘Lets Play’ of that battle?
@avernos Glad to see you painting more the Marvel Crisis Protocol minis. So many and I have them all, yet I’m WAY behind in painting mine. I’ve bought doubles of some of them as I want to play around with them by changing their stance and maybe see a different pose and look. Looking forward to seeing more of your painted heroes and villains finished up.
Well DONE to the Golden Button Winners!

OH, btw……..I did break down and order a copy of the new ‘Kill Team: Octarius’. But I also bought the three main books of the first edition of Kill Team’s books, Core Manual, Commanders, and Elites. So many folks are just not impressed with the new rules, so I wanted the old rules too. I ordered the new second edition box set as I had fallen in love with the ‘Death Korps Krieg Veterans’ and I don’t want to pay through the nose for the Forge World minis. At the prices that folks are parting out the Krieg Veterans from the box and the fact that I was looking at ordering the new measurement due-hickies and some other bobs that it just made sense to order a complete box. I found a seller that offered it at quite a price lower than it would have cost me from Games Workshop. So, I think……I win! 🙂
Happy sunday,
i feel the need the need to watch the Greatest movie ever made.
Wheel of Time books are amazing and would make an amazing show if they keep it to the books and don’t insert a bunch of weird modern politics into it or start merging major characters to not “confuse the audience”.
Ya, I’m really worried that agendas will be more important than a great story. But I’m hopeful!
Some interesting hints and tips this morning in XLBS.I particularly liked the Diplomacy 101 part. When moving to a new country it is advisable to integrate yourself with the local communities as soon as possible .In some cultures this can be achieved by dressing up as a cardboard mech and standing outside in the rain
Maybe its a GW effect as the the only other person I know who ginished Wheel of ztime was another ex GW staff member
LoTR done well? I’ll just mention Helms Deep
I need a river for my Middle-Earth table, and I’d love to be able to get some of the Battlefeild in a Box stuff, but it’s just not available any more. I’m a little apprehensive about the Wheel of Time series, I really do hope they do a good job of it, same with the Lord of the Rings.
I loved the books of the Wheel of time but I wonder how they will translate this to tv as you have a lot of characters that are being followed and jumped to in the books. If they get the story right on the screen and not jump all over the place all the time then maybe it won’t be that bad.
I think I got to like book..8 maybe.. one of the main characters was captured and I didn’t really care, that was when I figured, meh… So, that was my journey with the Wheel of Time. Couldn’t care less about it now 🙁
Ref 3d Printers I think I’m looking at 2 options now – either something like Elegoo’s currently crowd-funding Jupiter, to print armies (and Titan limbs) in one go, or I’ve been looking at the forthcoming DLP tech that’s set to phase out the current trend printers to use LCD screens to generate the prints (but on the other hand that might push the prices of LCD printers down, just need to make sure to buy some spare LCD screens at the same time…). I do need one at some point though. Otherwise it’s a waste of half a terrabyte of my HDDs.
Also, a regular Battletech show? Go on 😉
tech always advances … and chances are that by the time a 3D printer becomes ‘affordable’ there’s new tech.
My advise is to not think too hard about future developments or price changes.
Those always happen after you’ve bought stuff.
I also am tempted to say that stocking up on spare parts is pointless, unless you run a business and need to survive after support stops. Buying a new printer may not be environmentally friendly, but is bound to be cheaper as you don’t have to fiddle with replacement parts that may or may not work after you’ve stored them in a cupboard somewhere …
All good points dude. As to parts, honestly the LCD screens are the one thing my reading on the subject suggests are most tricky to replace if the maker of the printer has ceased production, and it looks like most current models are only about £25 or so for spares as opposed to having to buy a whole new printer, and they seem to be designed to be easy to replace.
I have two spare LCDs but after nearly two years of printing about once a week (in the early months it was much more than this!) on an original AnyCubic Photon I’m still on my first screen – they last a long time (if you take care of your machine, check your files for “islands” before printing, clean the vat if there are any failures etc). I’ve seen far more “dead spots” on screens through mis-use (usually tiny bits of cured resin being left in the tank which then get pushed into the screen when the print head next lowers) than I have through simply being worn out. And changing an LCD once every couple of years? It’s no biggie!
The AnyCubic DLP Ultra looks very tempting though – due to launch any day now…
https://superbacker.co/anycubic-photon-ultra/?utm_source=3dprinting.com
If I had the spare cash, I’d be all over it.
It’s funny how so many people back in 2019 were like “3d printing, it sounds like a lot of faff, clean-up sounds terrible, I don’t think I’ll be bothering any time soon” who are now looking at 3d printers like “that guy checking out the women in the red dress” meme.
3D printing *can* be easy. But if you’re impatient or lazy or simply don’t quite understand the process, it can also be really frustrating.
I’ve had my resin print for a couple of years, have given away pretty much all of my metal minis and have no intention of buying physical minis any time soon. At the same time, my hobby spending in the last couple of years has sky-rocketed (from .stl Patreons to new paints to slap on my home-printed minis and terrain).
I think we’re reaching a tipping point.
The future of miniature-based hobby is digital/3d printing. You can try to deny it and hold out for as long as possible (just as some of your weirdos insist metal is better than plastic!) but the ground is already shifting under your feet!
I look forward to reading the exchanges in about twelve month’s time as @sundancer tries to convince @avernos that it’s not as bad as all that after all.
😉
the temperature in hell would need to lower considerably
Me convincing anybody? Hah! Not even convinced I’ll get one in the next year.
See you back here in twelve months!
(maybe when the icecaps have melted and elsewhere things are getting cooler)
I’ve put that in my calender with a reminder in 12 months 😉
Happy Sunday!
Hi COGz it’s the nutty nut show.
Short answer no, I’ve printed several armies and it’s the best thing that’s ever happened to my hobby. Now onto watching the show!
Looks like a interesting series an hopefully a better job than the Wizards first rules train crash? LOL I did love Zed in the show.
Even now there seems to be some confusion over the processes in 3d printing;
Washing the mini in isopropyl alcohol dissolves the *uncured resin* from the surface of the model, it doesn’t “cure” it; after washing the mini, you can remove the “scaffold” (or supports) but before any further clean-up (sanding or removing any “nubs” where the supports meet the model) you tend to “cure” the model, by further exposure to a UV source (a 35w nail lamp is perfect).
FWIW, I’ve found cleaning in acetone after printing to be far better than isopropyl alcohol – the details come out super-sharp.
Water-washable resin gives the worse result of all the resins I’ve tried (AnyCubic eco resin is surprisingly good, standard gets great results but is glass-like brittle and ABS-like is a nice compromise.)
Printing minis as upright as possible feels counter-intuitive when you start out but gives are far nicer result – fewer layer lines, less “suction” so far less chance of failure and fewer supports needed (so fewer “nubs” and less scarring on the final mini). Don’t like seeing all that empty space on your print bed? Then print 6-8 minis at a time!
Some great points all around, having been spending a fair amount of time researching recently it’s amazing how much incorrect information there is.
few things about the water washable resin John:
1) water washable tends to be more brittle than regular resin, i bought water washable at the start, ive now switched to ABS like and am much happier with my results. Is not too bad for big chunky things, but theres anything with small details, maybe a soldier with a spear
2) you shouldnt wash resin down the sink!
3) when i used water washable resin, i also bought an ultrasonic cleaner (£30 or so an amazon). Bit of water and some fairly liquid and a few minutes in there cleans them up nicely. Then you can pour the dirty water into a tray, put it outside, let the dirty water evaporate and the left over resin residue can be scraped into a bin.
It’s great to see how you’re progressing with your printing, I haven’t been printing for long, but it is great, I’m currently lining up to print a 15mm Roman Army from 3d Breed Miniatures
I was screaming noooooooo when John mentioned washing it down the sink!
I was screaming noooooooo when I saw the mini printed flat on its back! (though the first mini I ever printed was like that too). As-close-to-vertical is best for minis. Far less strain on the supports (since you’re “pulling down” on the supports rather than “across” them with each layer) and far fewer layer lines.
I tilt my minis about 10 degrees back from vertical and support.
That way even horizontal surfaces have a “low point” onto which you can attach a support (to reduce islands). Tilting back means the supports appear on the back of the mini, not the front (where all your attention is).
And don’t forget – for minis with lots of “dangling bits” (loin cloths, arms resting downwards) you can always flip the mini “upside-down” and print it from the head first (I print minis this way around more often than not). This can massively reduce support issues.
I feel like it’s almost time for a video lesson or something!
So is the reality box the modern-day version of a Pandora box?
Are you getting a Balrog Ben ?
Maybe somewhere down the line haha
Ooh nice one.
Gerry scares the natives going out in daytime ?
Stop press Irish Bigfoot spotted.
Wasn’t the millennium falcon cockpit a b29 one?
Lol gang.
Happy Sunday.
Congratulations to those three amazing golden button winners, fantastic work.
I’ve heard of The Wheel of Time on many occasions but I’ve never taken the plunge. I’m a fan of Brandon Sanderson and with this new TV series coming out who knows it may tempt me into reading the books.
My friend recently got a 3D printer and has slowly been making progress on getting to grips with it. I got gifted a Witcher Geralt miniature off him and the detail looks really good. Getting one myself it’s not for me, too much of a faf, and like Gerry there’s too many non 3D printed miniatures I want to get and paint.
Happy Sunday all. Great Golden buttons and hobby pics. I hadn’t heard of Wheel of Time so finding out there’s a shed loads of new books to get stuck into was great news to a book worm like me. Hope your all have a great week ahead of you 👍
@avernos They are already filming WOT season 2
Happy Sunday
