New Warhammer: Age Of Sigmar Soul Wars Boxed Set Announced + More!
June 5, 2018 by brennon
Games Workshop continues to spoil us with new model previews for Age Of Sigmar as they introduced the new Boxed Set for the game and 2nd Edition, Soul Wars. Here is a look inside the box...
The set will come with large forces for both the Stormcast Eternals and their new Sacroscant Chamber as well as the Nighthaunt from the Grand Alliance of Death. The team actually did a rundown of what you get in each set...
You get a whole bunch of new troops to use in your army as well as monstrous beasts, specialised elite units and of course characters to lead the way. The new 'holy' aesthetic for the Stormcast Eternals is very cool and very much pushes us towards the idea of Sigmar's faithful. Maybe this also means we'll learn more of the Unforged in the future too...
Here is the Nighthaunt set...
A superb range of new models which should be amazingly easy to paint. It shouldn't take a lot to be able to crack out some of the new paints that Games Workshop have been working on and get this army ready for the tabletop!
Push-Fit Warriors
Keeping with the idea of new models we were also told that we would get some new Push-Fit kits for both sets which will be useful for reinforcement purposes...and giving you a chance to try before you delve in fully.
This set above gives you a look at the new Sequitors, and check out that amazing female leader for the unit! It's awesome seeing so many more female faces amongst the Stormcast Eternal ranks.
The Castigators are your ranged options and, as you can see, this gives you a great new way to develop some very scenic looking units.
The Nighthaunt also get some options so you can test out paint schemes. Here we have the Glaivewraiths...
...and the stunning Banshees. I really LOVE these models, and it would be amazing seeing a diorama of these rising up to clash with ambushed foes in the midst of a graveyard.
There is a lot to look forward to when it comes to delving deep into both the Stormcast Eternals and Nighthaunt forces. However, that's not all you have to look forward to.
Books & More
The first thing to note is that of course, we get a new Age Of Sigmar Rulebook...
...and we also get a new General's Handbook. The Core Book contains all that you need rule-wise to play the game AND gives you ways to delve into the fluff too. You will also get yourself, as mentioned before, ways to get your points and tournament-style play on the tabletop.
The Soul Wars box also comes with some very nice Unit Cards which you can refer to during your games instead of flipping through a rulebook. I hope that this trend continues beyond just the main box and we start seeing these included as part of packs in the future.
Last but not least we have the Malign Sorceries set which not only delves into how magic works in this new edition but also offers up some amazing new spell effects too!
I'm fairly sure that the new Age Of Sigmar is going to be the most cinematic looking version of the game yet.
There is a bit more for you to check out over on the Warhammer Community website as they delve deeper into what you've seen here. But, so far, I think we're on track for an awesome new edition of the game.
What do you think?

Loving the new undead models, and, based on the looks, the apparent darker theme to the game.
Reading the Warhammer Community article, it looks like Age of Sigmar Skirmish will still be there too, but is now part of the Malign Sorcery expansion under the title Skirmish on the Realm’s Edge.
New undead models are really good while Sigmarines are still meh.
I hate that fantasy has space marines and there’s not a skeleton in sight either. #OldHammer
That’s because it’s specifically an ethereal undead based army.
Undead stuff is good. The rest, not so much.
Another excellent product from GW but as usual some haters come here just to complain that this and that is meh or not like they wanted because they want WFB but different than it was and at the same time the same as it was and new models but looking more like old ones and new factions but not the ones that GW is introducing etc, etc…
It’s easier to complain than to be constructive.
Slay the unbeliever.
Those banshee are incredible.
Agreed, those banshee models are stunners, will definitely be picking up a box of those.
I may get a box of those as well. First GW models I’ve considered buying in years!
Yup. I will be getting this once I have moved house!
Superb set from GW, I think this will even further grow AoS! Way to go. 🙂
I dont know much about the stormcast eternals (im old/middlehammer at heart) but i just dont get why their ranged units are so heavily armoured?
The undead models are very nice individually but there is something about them as an army that just loosk weird to me.
The Stormcast are heavily armoured because they’re massive. They’re supposed to be angelic warriors and they’re much bigger than a regular human – the armour is just part of that. It’s a step away from traditional medieval armours and their designs take a lot of cues from Space Marines or WoW (I have even seen D&D artwork that isn’t a million miles away). I will let you decide whether you like that or not; It’s popular but it’s certainly nothing new or original
I see thanks for the info, its not a faction thats for me so im probably missing the aesthetic draw but hey its not like i dont have alternatives, long may the golden age continue.
They’re not really my favourite thing. I do like the concept of the divine soldiers but I am not 100% sold on their implementation. Some are definitely better than others but by and large not really my cup of tea. I can totally understand why they have pushed them as hard as they have, they appeal to the same kind of mentality as Space Marines.
If I am being honest, I actually liked them before they had the humanoid heads. When they were first released they sounded like they were the souls of fallen warriors magically encased in armour which I thought was very cool. Turns out that’s not the case and I think they’re less cool as a result
…for the same reason soldiers wear helmets and bullet proof vests, I imagine 😛
It’s the shared thematic language Workshop have talked about before. The units are coherent internally and you can tell from the silhouette that it’s a Stormcast.
Personally I’d love a free people’s/Empire army but that’s for the future no doubt.
Those new ethereal undead models are superb. I also quite like the new persistent spell effects with the miniatures, that’s a nice touch and it definitely beats a cardboard template
The Undead look really nice and are a strong temptation for me to get into AoS. The Glaivewraiths look like they’d also make decent Tzeentch daemons with the avian look to the skulls. The Banshees look nice, although I think they’d look better with long flowing hair.
I like the Ghost army a lot.
The Sigmarines though… robbed a cloth store ? But do love the female Models.
Gorgeous models all round, especially the Banshees. Bring on the Sacrosanct Chamber, I wonder when we’ll get to see that big winged mount from the trailer.
The Endless Spell minis look very nice, can see them becoming parts of many a conversion/kitbash or diorama.
If I combine Quicksilver Swords (8) with Chronomantic Cogs (11) do I get to call it Unlimited Blade Works 😀 sorry I just had to say it.
I guess since everything is acceptable these days, people even feel free to like Sigmarines in public. Do look forward to grabbing the nighthaunt models from secondary sellers.
People can express what they like regardless of what others think. I’m ambivalent about the Stormcast. I do not understand why people waste so much energy whinging about them.
For a sense of validation
Of course same goes to those that don’t like Sigmarines. They can express what they don’t like regardless of what others think. So others like you waste time whining about others not liking something that you like.
Errm, I don’t care what you like or dislike. I only ask that people explain their reasons.
Wow! I will be picking up this. I love the undead and the stormcast. I get that people don’t like the stormcast and it is like I feel about space marines (regardless of flavor). Originally the stormcast were kinda one note but as the releases have come they really have grown on me to the point that I really like them. I might not like the gold so much but that is just a color that GW has chosen. We can always paint them however we like.
the new spells look like a fun addition 🙂 and could bring some great possibilities for conversions and dioramas too 🙂
the nighthaunt minis are great too, with some clever design work 🙂
and the stormcasts look much more interesting with the extra robes, much more in line with the old sigmar priests 🙂 and for anyone who still hates the death masks, a head swap with a more traditional helmet instantly solves all your problems 😛
Love this, can’t wait to get my hands on it. New Stormcast look fantastic but the nighthaunt are the real standout here. The new rules and background sound like a massive swerve in the right direction as well. With the new rules for narrative play and battles in the sky it sounds like there will be a lot of customisation for players to enjoy the game in many varied ways. Those look like new shadespire warbands at the bottom there as well so those will be another pick up.
Unfortunately they are not for Shadespire, they are just 4 easy to build kits being released to complement the Soul Wars box set.
So far, but we shall see. I have a sneaking suspicion that might change.
yeah mate with the bases they have that was my first thought too
Just like that, I am collecting nighthaunts and another chamber. Release day is gonna be real expensive for me and i cannot wait. Excited to see all the characters revealed for the nighthaunts
Those undead minis are the badgers nadgers! I’m even starting to like the Stormcast quite a lot, too.
I really like the new death models and the magic models look amazing. I think im going to hold out until the rules have been played alot though, this way at least Ill not be investing until i know ill enjoy it
Breaking away from the old rank and file units has certainly opened up the range for some really dynamic models.
Now it feels like AoS is landing properly, this looks to be a much better offering than the original set.
Sadly though it still leaves me cold.
I love the ghosties – actually tempted to add another game to the pile of shame. And a 3d Purple Sun – nice to put a face to a name 🙂
I keep reading Celestar Ballista as Battlestar Galactica
Been on the fence about age of Sigmar for a while but I’m all in now. Those nighthaunts are amazing.
This looks like a wonderful set. The endless spells sound brilliant.
I like that they are doing a proper thick Core Book and have made an effort to flesh out the geography and cultures of the realms. A problem I had with AoS 1 was that I could never really get into the background. The setting was just too infinite and blank canvas – it was hard to care about any battles fought there because it didn’t feel as real as the Old World. Hopefully with AoS 2 they get to keep the crazy scope and freedom, but add in the grounded detail that makes it ring true and matter.
For example, I love the little hook they’ve thrown out there about bounty hunter wizards going out to hunt down and dispel endless spells that have gone wild. I can imagine building an army around that.
I have liked the Stormcasts since day one. About time the forces of order had their own Daemons, recruited from the souls of worthy warriors.
The set looks great. Nighthaunts are nice enough, but I’ve never really like dead/undead armies so they’re not really for me.
I’m really looking forward to the expanded lore. One of my biggest gripes when the game launched was the dearth of information about what excatly had been going on.
I left the worlds of Warhammer and 40K many many years ago, well before the age of Sigmar and the like. While collecting other games I have continued to watch Games Workshop and I have been impressed by the direction changes but still watched from afar. 18 months ago a Warhammer store popped up literally around the corner and I visited it on opening day, and never returned. Two weeks ago I popped in to get some technical paint and saw the small starter sets ($55 AU – Prices are still an issue for me here in Aus but there has been SOME improvement) – I went back this week and bought the two mini starter sets, and they are good. Sooo I am back (slowly slowly) getting into worlds I have loved since a young age (When both games were just books). On price I will say this – I think GW products are a bit like Lego – You see a Melinimum Falcon and it’s $269.00 AU and you think bloody hell – that’s ridiculous – but when you look inside at what you get, you go .. oh that’s why it costs so much. In the case of GW I think – You get the decals (which are not cheap from anywhere), the miniatures are head and shoulders bigger than most you buy these days and the detail is second to none, the rulebook, dice, a small, how to put the models together guide and the rulebook (in the case of the 40K there is also the map, ruler, and the second booklet) and about 15 models … pretty good value next to other box games that are usually around 3 times the price (and I know they sting you with character models 🙂 – anyway off price – all I can say is I hope GW continue to improve their service, quality and support (along with value) and I am looking forward to delving back into the worlds I grew up enjoying so much 🙂
Probably not for me, nothing in the rules previews has really shown potential to make it a game I would find enjoyment in. I will however be open to a demo, no point dismissing it before you try.
Boxed set is solid. Spirits look fantastic, stormcast I just don’t like the aesthetic. Only other point is it is a shame the magic being split out means you are adding another book to the bag. But as a game launch it is solid.
I think they’ve knocked it out of the park on this one. I know some people have issues with Stormcast, but that’s a conversation for another thread 🙂 The tightened rules (which were pretty good in the first place), detailed lore, new models, and “physical” spells are a great way to expand on the OTT fantasy style of AoS. Love it. Price will be an interesting thing though – surely they can’t keep the price point of the existing set?
From what I gather it will be £95 in line with the 40K 8th edition starter. The main price point difference between this and the first set is that amazing 320 page hardback book.
Cheers, thanks!
Opinions and all, but I reckon AoS model releases are head and shoulders above what has come out for 40k for the last few years.
Maybe it’s a bit unfair, because 40k releases have basically focused on getting all the army rule books out, but I’d also say that AoS’s setting just seems to allow the designers to go nuts. Armoured dwarf air pirates, elves riding sharks, this new undead army. Maybe once we see all the 40k army books, we’ll see some crazy stuff, but for the time being, I’m far more interested in what comes next for AoS (Skaaaaaaaaaven……Skyrrrrrrreeeee……Eshiiiiiiiiiiin).
love the new spell markers, so will a new new Nagash will be on the cards with this great plastic flashing around.
STOP DOING STORMCAST IN EVERY BOX RELEASE!!!!!!!!! (there’s it’s out “rant” over). There’s so many other races they could have used, and the Stormcast (fantasy Space Marines) are the reason I haven’t dipped my toe into playing AoS (Yes I hate the Stormcast minis sooooo much (bring back the Empire)). The Stormcast “look” and background are just so devoid of character (compared to the old Empire fluff), and DO seem like a cut and paste for the Spacemarine background (holy crusader, superhuman etc etc). HOWEVER the spell effects minis I REALLY like, and might be tempted to get the box just for the minis (even if I don’t play AoS at the moment).
My wife has been trying to get me to give AoS a go of late, we had been waiting for a starter set that more closely fits our preferred factions, this seems like it might just fit that bill. Maybe time to play some GW wargaming again.
Over the last year or so, I’ve got back into gaming and AoS has been a large part of it – the models are beautiful, the background is rich and over the top, and the rules are surprisingly deep and subtle. Just stay away from Nurgle 😀
Good advice for life regarding Nurgle 🙂
I’m just starting with AoS – could someone confirm what’s in the Generals Handbook that isn’t in the Core book, please? Just wondering why you need both?
The Generals Handbook is a yearly updated book that includes all the point costs for all the armies in Age of sigmar (they update it every year so they can balance units that might be over or under powered). It’s also includes some new scenarios and other information. If you’re just starting out I would wait for this new starter box and get the generals handbook later. There is a free army builder on the GW community site with all the points in it already you can use.
Thanks Andz – thats very helpful. Do I need the Wartome and/or Warscroll cards?
Warscrolls for all the models are available for free download from GW (although I believe some for specific battalions mentioned in books can only be found in those books or bought in a digital form). Wartomes are not required, but provide a wealth of information, additional battalions (mentioned above) and the warscrolls all in one place.
Also loving the new undeads.
Not a fan of the stormcast, since their initial release, still not now (although i do really like their Gryphhounds and even the mounts they have!)
