ah the weekend 🙂
You’re up early!! Lol
well you know how it is *-**** isn’t going to paint itself, neither is the *** so I have to be proactive 😉
He was up so early he remembers the Renaissance, which (for Sam’s benefit) was several hundred years long from the 13th Century and the likes of Dante’s Inferno, through the Black Death in the 14th, artists like Hieronymus Bosch and continues to the 17th Century which had some epic events like the Great Plague (1665-1666) and the Fire of London (1666 -so @warzan may be onto something, and there have been conspiracy theories in the past).
So 1643 is getting to the end of this period when the reformation had started to shift attitudes to the church and peoples beliefs over the past 100 years.
Middle Earth SBG. Got me started into wargaming over a decade ago. Simple, elegant design that gives tons of fun and complexity.
Totally agree!
Same for me with those De Agostini magazines.
So my vote is also Middle Earth SGB.
It was a gateway game for me too. Couldn’t be happier with the hobby just started getting into historical gaming as well!
Great show!
Love the new starter, but Adeptus Titanicus is amazing.
Who does not like the big mechs?
Someone they’re about to step on?
?
Everything Lord of the Ring!
Absolutely!
I have always liked Warhammer 40k. I wish I had tried the Epic Armageddon game.
Lord of the Rings for me.
Good morning and happy weekend one and all. Sick wife and sneaky hound mean I don’t seem to get to sleep these days!!!! Best GW Game for me ……. Necromunda without a doubt 🙂
Happy Saturday
I have more or less give up on GW. But I would lean towards LotR
Crikey where all up early…:by uk time standards , those bolt action tables look tasty, my favourite is probably assault on black reach as it was first one I owned.
The lord of the rings game is great. Still have my minis amd play whenever I get the chance.
It is the best rules system GW ever made and I played Fantasy, 40k, gothic and inquisitor.
As a brand new player, I played my first demo game today, it’s Dark Imperium for me. All the rule books and codexes I’ll need for both armies, enough models for myself and a friend to play and an immense value. $60 rule book and $70 start collecting box, but I also get a 2nd army and both mini codexes? For $130-$160 depending on where you get it, it’s an awesome value for brand spanking new players.
i really miss Warhammer Fantasy 🙁
we all do, at least people with taste do 🙂
I’ve pretty much swapped to KoW for all my rank and flank needs
Also a good chance to go to 10mm or 15mm as @warzan said they look better for rank and file games. When you go to the higher level of command
true but I have 16 28mm fantasy armies, so I’m not about to replace them, but I do have 6 20mm historical armies that I’m planning on doing for KoW:H for that reason
@avernos Are they plastic via HaT etc or metal
plastics
Lot of us do miss WHFB as system and it’s rich lore.
I don’t really mind not having to add another shelving unit every 4 years for any new edition. Warhammer Fantasy battles has been my hobby since 3rd and I have everything I need to keep playing – and most importantly painting. There is still enough in GW’s current range and through third parties and the second hand market to expand as well when desired. More importantly than the rules though, there is a rich world akin to LOTR, Elric etc. that can be played in and explored forever, with any rules system that fits. For example, now playing Frostgrave in an Old World setting.
Warhammer Underworlds: Shadespire is my current favourite. I think it’s a great entry point for the board game community into miniature gaming. It has the boardgame/cardgame feel, doesn’t require painting because of the different coloured plastics, but they’re amazing miniatures if you do want to paint them up. It’s just so easy to get into. I’d love to get a copy of the new Battle of Pelennor Fields. The Middle Earth SBG system looks great and I’d love to try it out.
Killteam is godly levels of good. It’s pretty spectacular how well it’s balanced and just how enjoyable it is.
I can’t wait to play it, the expansion looks really good as well.
The Kill Team big box is amazing: you get all you need for the game and is still fully usable in regular 40k. I’m seriously considering it, even if I’m manly a Space Marine player.
Morning all. I have not played Anything from GW for the past 10yrs+, but Kill Team looks to be the one that could get me back into it again. Minis look good and you could build up your own narrative to keep this game going on for yrs.
Dark imperium for this new guy to the hobby.
Necromunda…
I NEED that tooth and claw box! I JUST started a Space Wolves army this week. lol
Necromunda
Shadespire
Killteam
Battlefleet Gothic
Epic40k
In this order.
I like the way that GW put the hard backed book in the starter sets now
Glad the wolves are getting some love, but would love the dark imperium set!
I’m just getting back into GW after a fling with it as a child, with 40k Conquest. Painted my first Ultramarines and I’m really happy with them, so I suppose I’d love to get my hands on the dark imperium set. It’s definitely on my Christmas bonus purchase list.
Well I have to say of all the games GW have ever made it would be a toss up between:
Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay – by far my favourite RPG I have many happy memories of playing it.
Bloodbowl – awesomely fun game, but since I have played Guildball it’s lost its appeal.
Spacehulk – this is the only game that got me into the 40k universe, I never delved deeper.
I don’t tend to play any GW games these days but have to say the game that would be of interest because of the scale is smaller and that is Adeptus Titaninicus.
I had similar with Dreadball. It’s such a better game I just can’t see myself picking up Blood Bowl however splendid the minis are (and they are).
I was always a Skaven player and picked up the new Skaven team, but really did not like the models at all. so they are sat half painted in a box.
Games workshop is on fire. Hope they don’t burn their customers with the hectic release schedule
Yeah that has me worried as well.
They launched two games in August … Two … in one month??
The August White Dwarf only had about 10 pages, not counting adverts for one of them – Kill Team – and that was in the New Releases section. But had heaps of coverage on Adeptus Titanicus, being the more expensive game.
The local Warhammer store, and I’m not sure how we qualify for one in Dunedin New Zealand, told us that Adeptus Titanicus would be by order only – it’s really expensive over here guys.
The September White Dwarf is a little better.
Killteam. Because with the way I paint it’s the only way I’d play inside this millennium.
Ive also pretty much given up on GW (other than their paints) but I was really tempted by Kill Team/ Rouge Trader.
Kill Team Rogue Trader would be my preferred Starter.
Happy Weekend one and all! 🙂
Huge vote for middle Earth Strategy Battle Game. It got me into Wargaming 15 years ago and I still play it regularly.
It spawned not one but two Spin off Games (Legends of the Old West and legends of the High Seas) and if you love Scenario’s there must be over 300 official Scenario’s put out over the Years including Three Journey-books to play through the Books/Movies (plus you can choose your own Fellowship!).
And don’t forget the battle companies and War of the Ring spin off games
I’m thinking Titanicus will be my favourite once I have my Titans painted up. Definitely if they bring back Epic.
I hope Titanicus will be compatible with my Epic 40K armies
Justin, the figure you are talking about [with the clear shield] is from the Van Saar Gang.
I don’t have anything to do with GW anymore but in the past favourites would have been
Epic 3rd edition which was Epic 40000
Warmaster
Warrior Knights
Judge Dredd boardgame
There were others produced under licence but there not purely GW games
For me the best game is Kill Team.
I started 40k in 3rd ed. and dropped out of playing around 4th or 5th edition.
There seemed to be a cycle where they would fix something in the new edition, only to break something as well…. To me it looked like the next edition would fix what they had just broken, but would likely break something else. hopefully New GW won’t do that sort of thing.
40K was my retail therapy, but I ran out of room to store stuff and had purchased too much unmade plastic crack for my unmade armies.
Kill Team makes it easier to start the forces I always wanted to build, and perhaps pick up some models for armies I don’t own, but only after I have a few painted Kill Teams first.
What starter would I want? Hard to say as there sooo many of the Kill Team factions that don’t have a starter set yet… I’d really like to see a pirate Eldar force.
The weekend again, already? 😀
I love me some Space Wolves, but I really hope they bring back my boys the Black Tempars. That being said, if I were picked the winner I’d really appreciate the Middle Earth SBG box set. Good to see Frostgrave is still getting some love.
I’m working through building a Black Templar force for Kill Team, using the restriction that it has to be a valid force for the 4th edition Codex. So no sniper gun, bolter or heavy bolter welding scouts.
Just either shot guns or bolt pistol/combat knife Neophytes from a Crusader squad, along with some Initiates to teach them the ropes.
“Conan! What GW game is best in life?”
“To play Shadespire Underworlds, to roll the dice and hear the Lamentations of their Skaven!”
Right now Kill Team is my favorite. Low mini count and the campaign system are fantastic.
the site’s changed, i like it…..
I have not been paying attention
Definitely Lord Of The Rings for me. Just getting into it with the new starter set and I’m wishing I started years ago. It’s a great system.
Getting ready to goto work, have to say Necromunda. Grew up on the original and have had so many good games in the past, need to restart with the new set.
It’s the Weekend!!
Bleeping heck… So many comments!?! Oh I see, a GW competition. Well 63 can play at that game.
I’m going to say Adeptus Mechanicus. Why? Because it’s a bit of a game changer (pardon the pun) for GW with their venture into a new scale for the first time in ages, bringing those massive constructs within reach of more players and allowing them space to move and breath OnTableTops around the world (see what I did there?).
Doh – I meant Adeptus TITANICUS!
I am most exited about Kill Team
I love the look of Necromunda! But I think I think the latest Kill Team incarnation is the best of the new starter sets. The one I missed out on way Epic 40,000.
Tea, toast and “the Weekender”… It’s Saturday morning!
Kill Team, I would go with Kill Team as my box of choice.
LOTR is where I’m looking to right now.
Nice work guys!
Definitely 40K! Got me into miniatures, has a killer asthetic and has the craziest lore of any universe I’ve ever read!
Well good morning everyone and yay it’S weekend again! My first weekender after a long hiatus from the hobby and BoW and what a great show it was.
Let’s see, i’ll have to say 40K is my favorite game from GW, well of the current games, just because it was my first miniatures game when i was a lot younger.
Of course my all time favorite is Gorka Morka, but the chances of that game coming back are not existant i fear.
Have you checked out the trailer for Speed Freeks (due out in Orktober)?
I missed out on Gorka Morka but other people are hoping that Speed Freeks will be a worth successor.
yeah i’m looking forward to that game a lot. But the gameplay is just to different for my taste to be a successor for GM
The Lord of the Rings is Rick Priestley’s finest game and the best work by the Perry twins on the minis side – funny how both lots have gone historical since that was first released.
I’ll always have a soft spot for Space Hulk.
The new LOTR game for me. Lots of potential
I still have a soft spot for the original 40K Rogue Trader game. It encouraged kit bashing, was almost a hybrid RPG with great customization options for your miniatures, and was aimed at telling stories rather than just ‘dudes on a table’ gaming. I was hoping that Kill Team would re-create this but it seems to be just a smaller scale version of the 40k game.
I loved the original Rogue Trader for all those reasons too. Have you looked at Necromunda to scratch those itches? I find it has been useful for me.
GW, bring back EPIC!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am partial to Dark Imperium… that is the starter that finally got my in to the wargame side of 40k…
Loved this discussion. All most as much as I love Warren’s face!
Super awesome video, keep them going , another super awesome giveaway, fingers crossed to be a super lucky winner
Best GW boxed game? Of the ones currently available it is Killteam for me. The game is so much fun, and the terrai in that box is absolutely amazing.
Bloodbowl for the naming of the Black Ork ‘Oratio Nozeblowwa for my Deep Drek Chukkaz team from the long long ago. I too miss Mordheim for the gritty fun it provided me with Middenheimers.
Happy Weekend, As I started back in 2nd edition with Space Wolves my 40k Journey. I’ll have to go with the Tooth & claw box. Still have have them full metal Grey Manes, Blood Claws, Terminators, Bjorn and Ragnar, and a Razorback, though the metall parts of those where transplaneted years a got onto a new Rhino chassis.
I have joint fave GW games, Dreadfleet and the Middle Earth starter game.
Not got either, only played someone else’s copy but both very nice
I didn’t think people were allowed to like Dreadfleet. I thought there was a rule against it. General consensus amongst the fanboys I know is that it’s s**t. Which as far as I can work out is another way of saying it wasn’t the Blood Bowl that had been rumoured around the time it was released and so it never got a fair chance.
For me, I loved the fact it was a new IP and not the same tired old 40K or Old World spin-off. It has great models, a decent ruleset (not great, but then again there are very few actually great GW rulesets), and came with a fantastic cloth sea mat. What’s not to like?
Dark Imperium, Soul Wars and Pelannor Fields are probably the best “all in” starters that any company is currently making. Kill Team, Necromunda and Shadespire are great ways to give you a flavour for the settings, but then the likes of Imperial Knights Renegade, Tooth & Claw and the Kill Team expansions just represent phenomenal value for money. Adeptus Titanicus is a stunning product, but is clearly a “premium” product and – for better or worse – is priced accordingly.
Well you guys know very well which one I’m going to pick, even with that Krieg Soldier as my picture! It has to be Middle Earth/Lord of the Rings and the Battle of Pelennor Fields!
Absolutely agree with Sam that it is the best game system ever designed by GW. Agree though that some of the new ones like Kill Team are a very close second, but the cards still throw that off for me a bit as I still think they take away from the cinematic scene of your battle field. The Middle Earth system has that simple elegance that you don’t need or even want cards for that makes it easier to play!
Sam I would disagree though on the scalability of the SBG system, trying to play a very large game of SBG is extremely time consuming, which is why I absolutely love the WAR OF THE RING game system they came out with. Also a very easy game system to play yet hard to master the tactics. It only needed a few tweaks to help balance it which is why me and my friends developed a set of house rules to balance the game and keep people from breaking it. I’ve played mass 3000 point battles of Helms Deep and Pelennor Fields with that game and you can be done in an afternoon! Just can’t do that with the SBG system.
BLUF FOR ME THOUGH, LORD OF THE RINGS AND BATTLE OF PELENNOR FIELDS FOR SURE!!!!!
Great show guys as usual!
I prefer good ol’ 40K from the GW range
Adeptus Titanicus is just …“epic“, so it wins for me (and I hope they might bring full epic gaming back).
Followed closely by Killteam. It is just great that you can build so many different teams, from all the ranges, without busting the bank. And the fact that GW explores some of the „neglected“ parts of the lore, with stuff like Rough Trader, is awesome.
Oh, and if I should win a Starter Set, it would be Soul Wars, as that is the only one I missed out on.
Thanks for the show.
Cheers!
Early birds catch the Nurglings
Those will be some very ill birds!
Happy Weekend. It’s 2 weeks into spring in Sydney Australia and 32 degrees. A great time to out of the sun and playing games.
Great topic guys. As both a player and a retailer GW makes me laugh and cry. I think everyone can agree that they are repeatedly producing smash hits. The two issues are quality and quantity.
Quality – Exceptional. So what’s the complaint? Imagine being a beginner hobiest and trying to paint miniatures this good. Daunting to say the least. One of the few failings GW has is giving players time frame estimates for assembling and painting it’s models. I understand why, but what I hear as a retailer is new players despairing at the amount of time it takes them to paint models. What I’d love to see is GW’s painters do videos on how to speed paint to a table level, then another on how to go next level and then finally again to display level.
Quantity – GW has up’ed its output of games to a level that gamers are financially fatigued. GW aren’t the only company like this, as a retailer I see it with Magic, a couple of other games and kickstarters, but what the completist, hoarder, gamer is rapidly going broke. Lets just list some of the boxed sets and games released in the last two years;
Burning of Prospero, Adeptus Titanicus, Overkill, Gangs of Commorragh, Stormcloud Attack (x3), Imperial Knights Renegade, Shadow War Armageddon, Necromunda, Kill Team, Rogue Trader, Space Marine Adventures, 40K 8th Ed, Death Masque, Tooth and claw, Forgebane, Age of Sigmar II, Gorechosen, Blight War, Warhammer Quest Silver Tower, Shadows over Hammerhall, Shadespire and Middle Earth strategy game. I’m pretty sure I’ve missed a couple too, but I’m sure my point is made.
Ultimately the box sets are usually great value for money (compared to buying the models in smaller box sets) although the independent games (in a main IP setting but not of the core rules) are often crap. Notice how many 40K IP skirmish games there have been? That pissed off a lot of customers and if GW miss-stepped in the last 2 years, it was that and the pricing of Adeptus Titanicus.
My personal favorite was AoS II but I am seriously looking forward to Rogue Trader.
Weekender Time… always good to start the weekend with!!!
For me my favourite game from GW has to be LotR, the sculpts are really nice. I prefer the true scale over the heroic. I’ve always found them a pleasure to paint, and they’ve always been a range that’s helped to push my painting skills.
The game it’s self works really well as a skirmish game, it’s well suited to narrative campaign gaming. It’s pretty easy to pick up and play, what’s more it has quite a bit of depth to it aswell.
Other games I’ve really loved playing from GW and comes a close second is Mordhiem, they really need to release an updated version. I like Shadespire but its no Mordhiem.
I forgot to mention Kill Team, I haven’t painted a Space Marine since 2011, until this game came along lol
KILL TEAM; Rogue Trader would be nice but I’d be happy with 40K starter.
I see a lot of comments about bringing back Epic . Well to be honest it never went away. Just like Blood Bowl and Necromunda and Warmasterthere are lots of fan groups still playing and writing and rewriting rules. There are still figures etc available on eBay comoanies producing proxies or alternatives through 3D printing. Have a look at @sordorel project or @rastamann painting thread etc. It just takes a little more work to get it together but very doable
Currently for me it is Killteam the scenery is awesome, I paint to slow to build large armies ans I can choose small squads from my favourite ranges. I am going to a tournament this afternoon with my Harlequins (committing a grave misdemeanour as have not finished painting them yet) My next squad will have ro gouse rule as doing some Noise Marines and Daemonettes.
If by some amazing quirk of fate (not won any competitions here though have rntered oh so many) U would prefer the new Rogue Trader box set.
I started with the skirmish games back in the 90s so it will always be Necromunda or Blood bowl as my old favorites. From today I still love Blood Bowl, the sillyness is still there and its all character driven – it’s not just faceless squad’s if your lineman goes down he has a name so you care more! ? If I were to get in on another system it would be Kill team, I love the idea of the 40k universe with the small scale of Blood bowl – I then have more interest in each mini. Plus I bought the £1.99 issue of Conquest just for the marines and I must say I’m liking the idea of a marine kill team!
Really enjoyed the GW segment today. I’m glad you are back on top of the GW catalogue and have a working knowledge of the gameplay again. Not that we need another GW-dominated channel but as such a major force in the industry I think it’s really important to be able to speak credibly about their games as they generate so much regular news and releases.
The boxed set I am most keen on is Rogue Trader. The minis are so cool and I’d really love to get into Kill Team.
At the moment i’m not ‘sold on GW’… However, i’m teetering on the edge of diving into a few of their offerings. The forthcoming ‘W40K Quest’ looks promising ( GW are good at promising ), but that’s not out yet. I like the Lord of the Rings game and miniatures, but i have some of those from back in the day, and i’m interested to see where it goes with more new sculpts first i think. So that leaves Adeptus Titanicus and Necromunda. I’m curious to see how both of those play. I’d happily land myself either of those.
I agree with Warren on Titanicus, being able to battle with giant robots is definitely my speed. If they do take it in an epic direction then I’ll be even happier as it will really add another dimension
Happy weekend all, great show, very interesting to hear your views on the GW games 🙂 This show has been a great one for me as you know I’m all about Games Workshop stuff :p
For me my top choice is very easy, but second is much more difficult. There are games they do that I have no interest in and will most likely never play, but that doesn’t diminish the value of their boxed sets or models.
Necromunda for me I’ve not had a lot of interest in, I saw the original, and actually liked that original boxed set over the new. But that was more how the terrain was!
AoS looks superb to me I would like to get into that game for sure, if I had more friends who were super into it I would certainly jump in! The models look fantastic! I do actually like the fantasy marines… not sure if its the models or the fact they seem to be fantasy space marines!!
Titanicus I’m not getting this game (yet) It looks great, but for me If it turns in to old Epic I’m in. I dont want just titan on titan.. I would love the whole of the 40k universe involved, be amazing to see the new take on the Eldar titans, what the Orks would cobble together, I’m keeping my hopes up for that, but until then I’m rather cold on it.
Second choice for me is Kill Team, I actually bought that set for the terrain initially, I sold off the 2 units of troops as I have no use for them. But having seen this one played I’m very interested in trying it out with a faction I love.
Top pickings for me is 40k (no surprise) Its the universe I love, the story, the models, and its what I’ve been invested in for most of my life. So I’m very bias regarding it perhaps! Dark Imperium is a great set, value, rule improvements, and amazing models. For me I collect armies, and play games while diving into the narrative… Love it!
Would certainly love a Tooth and Claw set! For Russ and the Allfather!
Best GW games – Age of Sigmar at number 1, Killteam at number 2, Warhammer underworlds number 3 (although it’s the one I play most often due to how easy it is to set and get a game in), Warhammer Quest at 4. I don’t play 40K, wouldn’t have touched it at all if it wasn’t for Killteam, not that I wouldn’t enjoy it, just that I’m collecting and painting enough armies for AoS already and I enjoy the fantasy setting more. Haven’t played any of the other specialist games, none really appeal. I’m looking forward to the 40K warhammer quest though, keeping an eye out for more info on that. Tooth and Claw is a great value box if you’re into Killteam, three killteams in one box.
I’m going to go for a game no one else has mentioned – Man O War. I was looking at my Dwarf fleet just the other day, remembering the time spent trying to get my nautilus in just the right spot for a torpedo strike, or loving the turrets on my dreadnought so the angles didn’t matter.
Second choice would be Blood Bowl. The comedy mixture of American Football and Warhammer fantasy is just perfect.
There are so many to choose from but I have to say Warhammer Fantasy Battles.
I agree with Warren about Epic. Me and my mates loved playing Epic because it gave more of an operational feel to 40K. An added bonus was being able to field several companies of Space Marines, with armor and titan support, for a fraction of the cost of a 40k army. Adeptus Titanicus would have to be my choice.
Asking what the best game of Games Workshop is, is hard a one and I haven’t played all their games yet.
I like titans, I really like titans and the models are amazing but I am still building mine and haven’t played yet. I have read the rules and they way it works does appeal to me with the alternate activation.
But if I have to go on games that I have played from GW I will go with LOTR. And Sam said anything that has to be said about this game.
If I had to choose a box to pick up it would be the new kill team: rogue trader.
I agree with Warren and Sam, Mordheim would be nice to see come back, I only played the electronic version but I liked it a lot.
My first comment here so I hope you read this. Great content as always chaps. Keep it up.
Reading you loud and clear, welcome to the community 🙂
I think it would have to be Lord of the Rings for me
Horizon Zero Dawn kickstarter is tempting but it needs a campaign I think to really get me excited. So glad their Resident Evil 2 kickstarter has two campaigns. Hoping I get that by Xmas.
Best Games Workshop games has to be 40k but I may change my mind to Kill Team with time!
my top five Games Workshop games?
If we are talking currently available only:
1) Bloodbowl
2) 40K
3) Necromunder
4) Kill Team
5) LoTR
However, all time favourites:
1) Bloodbowl
2) Necromunda
3) Mighty Empires
4) Space Marine (epic)
5) Warhammer Fantasy Battles
I agree with Justin: Necromuda is the best of the current crop.
WH40k is grimdark, but it’s a walk in the park compared to Necromunda. Imperial Guard fans know life is cheap but it’s so pitifully cheap in the hives. It’s a superb setting, blessed with great terrain (from GW and third parties) and its look is amazing! John Blanche was mentioned elsewhere in the show and the models are so close to his aesthetic, even more so than WH40k.
My one gripe is not with the starter set, but the wider game: a lot of the models and expansions are from Forge World. They are blimmin lovely (I have a few) but oh my the prices! I’m completely sold on Necromunda, and I’m not alone. I know a few lapsed gamers who’ve jumped back in.
(Also you know it now, but punks are almost without exception utterly sound, some of the best people on the planet.)
Kill Team is best game. Shorter game times, better chance of finding a game in my area, and better opportunity for narrative games. Starter box also pushes people to bring terrain as part of the hobby.
I am looking forward to Speed Freaks, although I haven’t played it.
I think it has a lot of potential to tick a number of my hobby boxes and engineering kit bashing to an Orky theme is definitely right up there for me.
40k Kill Team brought me and some friends back to TableTop gaming, best game.
You see, I was just on YouTube and I was all like “dat Kill Team: Rogue Trader though” but in the last 60 seconds it taken me to get on over here no I’m like “dat Titanicus though”.
So much interesting stuff coming out of GW these days.
Just loving all the new GW stuff. Especially Space Wolves. Can never do wrong with blood thirsty wolves!!!!!
I love to see Games workshop bring back Space hulk. Every time it come out it sell out so fast. I think Kill team is the best current box set with the Adeptus Mechanicus and Genestealer Cult and i love the terrain so cool.
My first game was gorkamorka, so it holds a special place for me, but best? Ohhhh difficult, gotta be Necromunda for me, never been so emotionally attached to models before, when my fave juve lost all his fingers, and the sole purpose of my gang was to save up for bionic hands, got said hands. It was epic. That juve died in the next game… Tears. Were. Shed.
I would love to win one of these starter sets so me and my friend can get into 40k. I i were to win i would prefer the Dark Imperium box set
Best GW game? I’m tempted to interpret that as “least worst GW game”, but that’s me, and I’m willing to be proven wrong… but I would have to say either Lord of the Rings (for human-shaped humans and no SMurfs) or Necromunda (still no SMurfs, and no horses to paint either). Although the Kill Team Rogue Trader stuff looks surprisingly nice (risk of SMurfs larger but perhaps acceptable)…
Wait how do you let us know if we win ?
They usually announce the winners on another Weekender
Ok thank you
I already commented on YouTube and mentioned my interest in a whole bunch of games – Necromunda, Kill Team, Shadespire, AoS & 40k. I totally forgot to mention MESBG! Lord of the Rings was my route into the hobby when I was a kid, and I’m really excited to see what happens with it now that GW are picking it up again. Forth Eorlingas!
I love the weekender! I always look forward to it!
This is my entry for tooth and claw. If I won, I would actually rather have the Dark Imperium started box as I love the Death Guard, sadly I haven’t ever played as I don’t have enough models.
Kill Team is my favourite game. Since its launch we’ve had a number of people join our gaming group as the price of admission is so cheap. I’ve also finally started a Thousand Sons team, a faction I’ve wanted for years but couldn’t justify spending money on (I typically play Xenos having started with Tyranids). The game itself is also quick paced and allows for some great narratives, allowing us to play whole campaigns in a day.
My favourite GW games are those connected with Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, The War of the Ring (the mass battle version), and as I don´t own the Rohirrim as yet I would like to own the new BoPF set, either by winning your wonderful prize or ordering it from my dealer as soon as it is available from him.
Second is Warhammer 40k. Got into it after watching Sam´s and Justin´s account of the 40k tournament in Prague. And indeed the “middle” starter set is a very good starting Point, even without the full hardcover rulebook.
Good time to be a gamer, nowadays.
I have completely lost all interest in the games workshop products, probably down to the cost as well but I mainly prefer the historical games as I get older. But if I went back to GW, Lord of the rings would be it for me, I like the Gondor forces but the Battle of Pelennor Fields would be the re-entry point I think.
I’ve recently started playing GW games again. Particularly Kill Team and 40K. I’d have to say while I’ve played more Kill Team, 40K is definitely my favourite at the moment. I’ve had some great games against my brother in the current edition.
Omg Omg definately want the lord of the rings battle of pelannor fields
Happy Saturday all.
My favourite game is Titanicus, far and away.Who wouldn’t want to control a God Machine in battle 😀 .Necromunda is my second place game.
The game I like the most is Middle-earth SBG>Have loved it for 16 years now ever since I painted my first ringwraith after watching the FotR at the cinema.
The game I want to buy next is Silver Tower. I ignored it at first because the AoS fluff just doesn’t grab me, however, the critical acclaim has been good, and I am coming around to liking the new AoS aesthetic at least, even if the story background still seems weird and doesn’t pull me in.
The game I want to see them revamp and bring out again is Battlefleet Gothic. I love and still play the old version, so a take on it with their modern approach to rules writing and improved plastics technology would be awesome!
Great show. The new GW choices are sooo hard to choose from. Looking forward to tomorrow’s show. Thanks guys.
I’ve only played Lord of the Rings SBG (or Middle-Earth SBG, as it now is), but I do think that it’s a fantastic game. The core mechanics are straightforward yet lend themselves to tactical decisions, and both the models and the profiles have so much individual flavour. I think that the dedication of the game’s fans – even when it was neglected by GW for a few years, and which has inspired the current revitalisation – is a real testament to how great the game really is. 🙂
Aside from LotR though, I’m just really happy to see that GW is engaging with its fans again, across all the different games. I think the future looks very bright for all of us. :D
If I have the chance to win one of GWs big box games, I’d take Kill Team (the original one, not Rogue Trader) mainly for the board, the tokens, and that awesome terrain.
However, my favourite GW game will probably always be blood bowl.
I would love any of the kits. I appreciate you all doing this! Great content guys.
I really enjoy playing Shadespire. I’m just getting into AOS so we will see if that takes over
Great show guys. Really looking forward to tomorrow. Warren’s waffly editorialising on the state of the industry and similar topics have always been one of my favourite parts of the weekender format. Great to see we might have more of this sort of stuff in XLBS going forward.
Games Workshop. Hmmmm. Tough one.
Having played 40k since the Rogue Trader days and seen it go through every change imaginable, I never thought, after the debacle that was seventh edition, that I would say this BUT I have to say I am really enjoying 40k 8th edition. At the 1000 point level (which is what we favour at my gaming club) it is fairly balanced, quite tactical and fairly free of glitches and speed bumps.
I would like to play more Lord of the Rings and I haven’t had chance to try kill team but 40k is my favourite GW game to play currently as written.
I love Blood Bowl too but the league rules as written are wonky as hell and the teams get so unbalanced by dodgy dice rolls as the game progresses it saps enjoyment for this element of the game. If you take standard 1 million gold teams for one-off games though Blood Bowl is my favourite GW game currently in print to play. It isn’t my first choice because to balance the league or competitive play experience requires too much house-ruling and balancing effort to make the grade.
All this said GW are no longer my favourite game producer and I play loads of other games over GW games currently.
Orktober is just around the corner and the new Speed Freaks box is looking very sexy!
GW are smashing it lately – it’s great to see the boxed games are getting some love at last. Necromunda, followed by Blood Bowl are my pick of the current bunch.
I’ve been really impressed with the starter options available for 40k too. My little lad is busy painting up First Strike and it’s a pretty decent amount of game in that little box.
yes…. this is definitely a great time to be alive!!
I honestly love the new age of sigmar, took me a couple of years to greive for the old world though, loved fantasy as well! But I do have to say it was originally the old lord of the rings stuff that got me into the hobby!
yes…. this is definitely a great time to be alive!!!
Its always been Lord of the Rings – and now its even better
great show again – thx – and of course MINES OF MORIA – because this starter set kicks my son (and me) into this hobby 10 years ago – my son is 23 years old now and he has others interests (you know what i mean) – but i stayed in and dive deeper and deeper – know when the kids had left home to stay on their on legs – i hade the space – i had the time – i had the money – and i have a lovely women accepting this hobby. so i will ride on – and you beast will give me the weekly kick – and maybe i became a grandfather some day and my grandson is old enought – i know what i will show him – i will begin with this “…they have a cave troll…..”
I suspect that some of those ‘pining’ for Warhammer fantasy battle haven’t tried AoS much. I’ve played WFB since 2nd edition and AoS 2.0 is my favourite by far.
Favourite all time GW boxed game? Man o War. I still have it.
Current, hmm, probably 40k. Just. Saying that I’ve literally just finished assembling the Gellerpox Infected Kill Team… So that looks like another game to play.
For a box, I don’t play Puppies or Cults so ideally I’d want Blight War. Then Kill Team.
Happy Weekender all!
Lord of the Rings for me. Battle of Pelennor fields for me or the uber ‘Charge of the Rohirim’ lol. A man can dream 😀
Good morning guys, been enjoying kill team lately.
I think subjectively the Strategy Battle Game is the best set of rules they have ever made but personally, for me I think what they have done with Kill Team is great, same basic rules at the current 40k but a few simple changes that make it a really fun skirmish game with several easy entry points, just pick up a squad and get going and the starter box with all the scenery and stuff is beautiful!
Just came across your site – looks good!
Having just got back into games having been out of it for the last 20 years I’ve been amazed at how things have come on – the detail on plastic minis these days is insane!
I picked up the Warhammer Quest Silver Tower box set earlier this year working my way through them at the moment, love the variety in that box.
Please send me the kill team box next! 🙂
Happy weekender! Without a doubt, the new Kill Team is the best GW game I have played. Accessible smart rules, small elite(ish) forces and quick, tactical play makes it a winner for me. Lots of great terrain to fill out the small table too.
Obligatory ‘boooo’ over Space Puppies from a loyal Son of Magnus.
?
If I won, not sure if I’d rather Adeptus Titanicus or Soul Wars…? Possibly the latter considering the former’s price tag. ?
On the Horus Heresy series ending: that’s not exactly accurate persay; the Horus Heresy line of novels is finishing, but is immediately being replaced by a series about the Seige of Terra, so essentially the HH series is continuing, but they’ve finally moved on to the final showdown. I expect we’ll get a fair few novels all about the Seige before we get to the actual smack down between Horus and the Emperor, then they’ll probably move on to the Scouring and spend years publishing novels on that.
The Titanicus terrain is fairly flexible, although you do need to plan things out if you’re going ‘off plan’ to make sure you use the bits economically. Need to get off my ass and get around to posting a blog on what I’ve done with mine to show the pics to show what can be done with them (eg I’ve built two large buildings with a connecting bridge which is high enough for knights to pass under but low enough to block Warhounds and larger).
As for the future of Titanicus; I’m hoping that they eventually will branch out into Epic because personally I feel that including infantry and tanks will help give the titans even more of a feel for their size and epicness. With just titans intulectually you have a sense of scale, but visually you could be playing with mansized robots, whereas if you have infantry scurrying around underfoot it would put them in to context (you know sort of like when they have a scale shot of dinosaurs and prehistoric creatures in books/museums they often have the silhouette of a man standing next to the beastie to help you wrap you head around how big the thing truly is). There’s also the added level of tactical consideration; while I wouldn’t expect them to be taking down titans, they should still be able to chip away at them and help set them up to be taken down by another titan.
WHQ40k – sounds like it’d be good for a Deathwatch team or an Inquisitor and Retinue; a small number of eclectic individuals delving into a hive/undercity, space hulk, etc.
I’m with @dracs in the love for the Olde World. I still think there were things they could have done to breathe new life in to it. Fortunately it’s not gone; our rulebooks didn’t disintergrate and our army books didn’t burst into flames when AoS 1st ed dropped so those of us who still love it can still play it.
LotR:SBG is what got me into the hobby, so I’ll always have a soft spot for it. I think the rules are pretty solid (or at least they were when I played, haven’t done so for years), and I don’t think I ever encountered cases where players had to check the rulebook and flick back and fore to see how rules interacted/what special rules did.
If GW were to bring a game back, it’s a toss up for me between BFG and Mordheim; I’m with Sam and Warren, Mordheim would need to stay in the Old World, not brought into AoS.
Ben on Holliday – is it like on Red Dwarf and he’s gone down to a monitor in another part of the building? ?
Zed vs Zee – I can only think of Stargate, where in the first episode of Atlantis one character (Rodney McKay, a Canadian) pronounces ‘ZPM’ as ‘Zed Pee Emm’ instead of ‘Zee Pee Emm’ like all the other (American) characters and when one responds with confusion another one goes ‘He’s Canadian’ to which the first replies ‘Oh Im sorry for you.’ Lol
The Fire of London and the Plague were at the same time @dignity and in fact I believe it’s thought that the Fire actually helped get rid of the Plague. Your confusion might be because (unless I’m mistaken) there were multiple outbreaks of the Black Death over the centuries.
For Warren’s idea of Jack the Ripper spreading plague – if you’re going to throw an out of place historical figure into the mix then surely it should be Typhoid Mary? ?
Surely Alessio’s claim to fame is LotR:SBG rather than 40k 5th? Back me up Sam. 😉
That dungeon terrain looks great.
On Warren’s Dungeon – will he manage to get a mammoth in there for Justin? ?
That’s a pretty sweet box set. I’d be good with that or the new Middle Earth starter set.
Can’t believe @warzan mentioned Dreadfleet as a game he would like to see come back.I would much prefer the original Man O’War make a return to the table instead.
Still the best and unfortunately out of print, is GW game that I still play and I believe to be the best that was made (Published by FFG) : Space Hulk: Death Angel – The Card Game.
And for the offer from Warren, I will take ANY of the LOTR games over the 40K games.
Lord of the Rings – so easy to pick up & play, got tons of my friends into the hobby and the rules were great for any size of battle. The models themselves were incredible for the time as well.
I know you guys are still playing with audio and other things in the studio, but at least for me the audio for this episode was terrible. You might as well be in a closet speaking.
what are you listening on? It was muddy for me too on the mobile.
I’ll have @lloyd look at it next week
Windows 10 Pro PC (i7, 32gb RAM), Realtek High Def Sound card, Advent 5.1 Speakers actually attached as 5.1 and 100 Mbps Internet. It is worse on the Amazon Kindle and no better from the Xbox One.
I guess classic 40k will always have a place in my as my first miniatures game, but I dont think it was their best. I think overall I’ve had the most fun with Shadespire and I think it’s a solid rule set with great minis a potential to expand. So I guess I’d say Shadespire.
Well, it’s Middle-Earth SBG for me. And watching the BoW content.
Gotta love that Kill Team terrain! 🙂
I really enjoyed the old WFB starters, the 7th edition starter had so much stuff in it! But I found my new GW game with Kill Team. I hope they keep dropping expansions for it.
Best games have to be LOTR, WFB, WFRPG & Bloodbowl. I would really like to get the battle of Pelenor Fields.
I’ve a question, if I win (it’ll never happen based on experience) and I want the kill team starter set, out of stock almost everywhere, do you have a copy or I’d have to choose some other kit? I’m trying to buy it and I cannot find it anywhere! 🙁
I love the new GW kill team boxes. GW is really stepping up their game (haha). If Rogue Trader kill team box is an option, I’d love that. Otherwise the kill team starter and then tooth and claw.
I think Kill Team is the best thing they have going right now and the new Rogue Trader box looks fantastic
OTT vs BoW… hmmm… long live OTT… fond memories of BoW….
As for best GW game… the answer is whichever one you are currently playing with your mates… seriously… I have such fond memories of Warhammer Fantasy Battle (2nd edition?) when I was a kid playing vs my brothers… then Space Marine/Epic with my mates from high school… then 40K and all the specialist games (BFG, Gorkamorka, Mordheim) with friends in college… then took a bit of a hiatus, tried 40K again at a local shop, then took another hiatus, and came back for Age of Sigmar, 8th Edition, and now Kill Team… While other friends have always been Blood Bowl or Necromunda fanatics or were super heavy into 8th edition WFB or 7th Edition 40K… or others just played Space Hulk… that’s what makes GW so tough to get away from in this industry, is they have enough breadth to appeal to almost everyone.
Great episode lads.
I’d have to agree with Sam that Lord of the Rings is a far superior ruleset to Warhammer 40k. Even 8th edition has too many hold overs from 80’s era game mechanics and too much can weigh on who goes first.
As for my favourite GW game at the moment, I’d have to say Shadespire. It’s got a simple mechanic, easy to learn, but there is an element of deck building to really sink your teeth into.
I much prefer the Adeptus Titanicus scale for titans. Completely agree with Warren that you get a different sense of the battlefield when you go to that scale. I’ve always wanted a Reaver Titan but couldn’t justify the cost, so at this scale, it’s much more appealing and they will look just as nice once painted.
I have been a long time Necromunda player (old version) so I’d very much like to try the new style. The models are great, but I’m curious how the campaign mechanics work now.
the best value deal for any GW boxset got to be the DARK IMPERIUM box, hardcover rules, looooots of minis and incredible artwork, for any new player this got to be the way to go… but for me the box I enjoed the most wast the STORMCLAW SANCTUS REACH box, Orks and Wolves are my 2 favorite factions and I really was excited when it came out
Hi from South Africa. Can not wait for your new posts on youtube. Watch them all. At the moment busy assembling 458 warlord games AWI figures for Sharps Practice 2. Why so many? because they had an offer which was hard to refuse. To get a 18 pound box for free when buying an army box is insane! Would like to receive The Lord of the rings box set. More of a historic gamer but would like to try this when i try something towards fantasy. great channel guys always fun to watch.
tooth and claw is great to expand the dark imperium box
I think for sheer value, the Dark Imperium box set is the best, Followed by the new LOTR box set. For myself, I think my next buy would have to be the Kill Team boxset for my collection. The newest space wolf box is nice, but I don’t think it has as much value as some of the others for the same price.
Huge fan of anything Warhammer. But like the Forgebane stuff. Thanks for the show.
great show. i would say necromunda
Warhammer 40k, mostly for aesthetic reasons ?
Gotta be lord of the rings battle of pelennor fields!
Warhammer 40K, mostly for the aesthetics.
HE do great boxsets. It is very hard to resist them.
I have Necromunda and the Soul wars box I just ordered.
All of them are great.
But Soul Wars is my favorite.
If I win I would want another box of it than I could give the extra rule book and the Stormcast to my brother and we would have two great armies.
Tooth and Claw suits me just fine, it adds to my existing wolves and give me a good start for the genestealer cult. That said kill team is awesome, its fantastic value and a lot of fun to play.
For me the idoneth deepkin could really get me back into aos. Also the necromunda and kill team starters look amazing. Rogue trader is probably the most interesting box.
Great show guys.
For me, the best game GW make is Necromunda. It was my favourite game when the first version came out, and I love the new one too.
If I were to bring back any GW game, it would be heroquest, although not technically a GW game in the way something like Mordheim is.
Tooth and Claw is a great box set, but I think Soul Wars is a better one.
I like the new Rogue Trader box for the Nurgle stuff, but they do have the goodest doggo in the galaxy.
I love killteam. It is my favorite of their current games.
Middle Earth all the way for me. I just bought the Pelennor Fields box and it’s amazing value for money. If I win the competition I would go for Adeptus Titanicus as I currently own nothing in epic scale.
best gw game ever? well its Block Mania! *mumbles bunch of noobs*
but on a more serious note id say its Warhammer Underworld:Shadespire best thing they’ve done in decades, it got me to buy a gw product again something i had not done since 2nd edition space marine i think, great stuff.
Or Warlock. Or Apocalypse. GW started going downhill from 1981.
Sweet Tooth and Claw is perfect for me.
Wow great boxe.
These days I prefer games which allow me to complete games more often in a shorter time-frame, so I tend to go for Skirmish games, such as Kill-Team and Necromunda.
What I’d like to do next is grab a starter set (hint-hint!) for the Age Of Sigmar and pull in my Shadespire warbands to play AoS Skirmish battles.
Outside of the above, I’m keen to hear more about Speed Freeks – Ironskull’s Boyz have got me interested in Big Green Fings Wot Go WAAAAAAAAAAAAAGGGGGGHHHHHH!!!
Gotta be Kill Team for me – been out of the clutches of GW for quite a while but with Kill Team, a friend’s old Necron models and very little resistance I am coming back in.
*INSERT DRAMATIC PHRASE*ERROR*PHRASE NOT FOUND*
I remember Epic rather fondly, so I took up Adeptus Titanicus and so far I’m happy. I just hope the eventually do release Xenos titans.
Right now, I would go with Kill Team, as I have neither the time nor the interest in big battles, but a skirmish is definitely my line of gaming.
Kill Team. It’s the only GW game I play today. I tried 40k years ago and I just didn’t like the rules and I’m still not impressed. But I do like the models and the lore, so Kill Team works for me.
Now, if someone were to give me Titanicus, then I’d play that too. ?
Kill team has been a massive win for me. I love dipping into a faction but I’ve never been too keen on kill 2k armies.
Another great weekender guys and my favorite looking current GW boxset is Warhammer Age of Sigmar: Soul Wars. The next favorite current boxset is the Adeptus Mechanicus that just came out. Looking forward to seeing the Frostgrave book next year.
Love all the GW starters and “big box” games, but currently loving the new Lord of the Rings the most, would love to win that set 🙂
Its funny that this should come up just now, when I’m strongly considering renewing my love affair with GW after nearly 20 years away from it.
I’ve been so impressed with the switch in GW over the last few years and the way they’ve gone back to their roots – releasing great games and focusing on the needs of the gamers instead of on the needs of the share holders (not-so-RIP Kirby and the other Old Guard who made it so).
Add to the mix the number of great games GW now have on the shelf plus the sheer volume of expansions and extras for them and it really is an exciting time to get into / back into GW. Looking at their web site makes me feel like a kid in a sweet shop (or maybe an adult in the worlds biggest off license).
My hit list is already well formulated and I merely await the old bank account to draw level with my expectations in order to execute it.
1) Titanicus (takes me back to my heady days of Epic).
2) Kill Team
3) Dark Imperium
Putting in for Dark Imperium. I have a long-term Primaris project in the planning stages, and the entire Primaris Marine half of that box is something I could use!
Interesting show.
In regard to the prize, I would prefer “The Lord of the Rings™ Battle of Pelennor Fields” starter set as that is the game that ticks my interst most from Games Workshop.
For me, the Middle Earth SBG stands head and shoulders above everything else GW has ever done in my experience. Importantly the use of Heroic Action was the first time I encountered a mechanic in any game to throw off the dull old fashioned “You-go/I-go” game mechanic.
Note sure if those in the US can enter, but I think I would enjoy a Monsterpocalypse starter set over anything else… the blind box aspect was the only reason I never tried it.
The best game from Games Workshop up now is still Middle Earth SBG. Elegant. Fastpaced and lots of fun.
I forgot to add which game I would like as a prize, should I win I would go for the Middle Earth Box Set. I have all the components apart from Theoden, and would give the rest away to get two mates into the hobby!
I love Horus Heresy to bits, because it just feels a bit more balanced. You get less spamming of units, there’s very little “codex creep”, and the models are beautiful. If they refined the vehicle rules a little, it would be amazing. I really enjoyed Shadow Wars, and Assassination execution force is great fun too. Looking forward to trying out kill team soon as well.
Best game currently made at the moment by GW is Kill Team, all the flavour of 40K in terms of background and forces, but with a much lower entry point. This helps new people get into the game/hobby and lets veterans expand into new areas without having to pay for a whole new army.
Morning – well afternoo/evening – all
first and second choice for me would by Adeptus Titanicus, then Necromunda. I own both, though have yet to start on either (Gamers curse, too much on the go already, though AT is likely to see the light of day in the next few weeks), and played both in ‘ye olden days’
Hopes for the future include Battlefleet Gothic (which specialist games have already said they want to do), but mostly ‘Epic’ – either Horus Hersey or 40,000 period, happy for either. Seeing Gargant’s in AT would be good too.
I’m glad they moved away from the space wolves with the weird spiked fan hair. These models look awesome.
Ps: if I win, wouldn’t mind a kill team Starter instead but obviously anything is awesome
if i had to pick a gw starter set it would have to be titanicus juat because of fact of the years of shear pleasure the original one along with epic gave me in my younger days
Can I have the Speed Freeks Box please? (Or necromunda)
Justin – Mordheim is grim Diaster setting, nothing in Age of Sigmar is close to it, AOS is too Bright in all aspects
1643 is post renaissance
I loved Gorkamorka and Battlefleet Gothic, retro I know but good fun.
For me, the best GW game is Kill Team because i prefer the skirmish scale and the lower cost buy-in, while still allowing me to enjoy the 40k universe. Also i like that every soldier is vital, no model exists simply to add dice and wounds to a squad. Finally, let me say that i don’t care about which game has the best rules, so long as i can immerse myself in the battle and have fun.
I think Adeptus Titanicus is the best GW game available at this time as this was my first GW game back in the late 80’s and I have the fondest memories along with Space Hulk, Blood Bowl (Foam Board edition) and Hero Quest. I look forward to see what is in store for the future of Adeptus Titanicus; and have thoroughly enjoyed the few games of Adeptus Titanicus I have had a chance to play.
If I could see GW bring back an old game it would be a new cleaned up version of Inquisitor but not 54mm scale; just regular 40K scale would be great. It was the narrative and game mechanics I really enjoyed.
“Which GW game is best?” That’s almost is bad a question as “which is your favorite kid?” “Advanced Hero Quest” was my first and I’m still not done painting all those Skaven. It was hours of great fun, but was it the best? Close, but not quite. Then came the beginning of my hord of Genestealers. The original “Space Hulk” came crashing through my door, and I just about wore out the tiles. For me, it was pretty close to perfect. While Rogue Trader and 40k started to expand the Imperial, Chaos, Ork, Eldar, Tyranid, Necron collection, the Space Hulk expansions from White Dwarf and the boxed sets pulled it all into Space Hulk in one way or another. The Genestealer hoard grew. Then another generation of Space Hulk and more Genestealers. Somehow the “Lost Patrol” captured some more Genestealers. So, the best GW game? “Space Hulk” in all it’s iterations (maybe Advanced Space Hulk not so much.) But we will see about “Blackstone Fortress.”
“Tooth and Claw” looks great. My GSC needs Aberrants. It just doesn’t need more Genestealers. And Burning of Prospero topped off my Vlka Fenryka. So, were I given the choice, I would rather have the “Adeptus Titanicus Grand Master Edition” if it ever becomes available again. Just because I need a whole new 40k scale to work on, and, I hope I’m wrong, the massed armies of the Horus Heresy and Great Crusade might be destined to shrink to this scale for the Siege of Terra.
Just started on the conquest magazine, not played since the epic scale game.Still got lord of rings helms deep box set. Have the first space hulk game and blood bowl has well. Loved the fantasy game have a large undead army stored away in my garage. Been thinking about kill team or waiting for the black fortress game they have recently announced. Would like either the dark imperium or kill team torn between the two.
Best GW games 1) Warhammer Fantasy Role Play 1st Edition – cracking material to develop one’s imagination and immerse in an escapist world of heroes and villains. 2) Mordheim – skirmishes with customised warbands – easy to learn and quick to play. 3) Warhammer 40K Kill Team (edition 4… but I like the new edition) – a great opportunity for kit bashing. 4) Dark Heresy Warhammer 40K Role Play – rich in narrative and characters. 5) Necromunda – Escher all the way 🙂
Well done gentlemen. Great show. Have not been able to keep up with all the GW releases of late.
This was a nice way to catch up. I have to say I like the look of Kill Team. It is a good fit
for me do to the limited time I have for gaming these days. I have to agree the idea of getting my 150 painted
Uruk-hai back on the table again sounds great too.
I have a dream, a dream were Orkses can take to the skys as pirates and plunder the mortal realms!… so Age of Sigmar could be the best.
Kill Team Starter box please.
nurgles nappies bless you all. Know. No fear is a great way to start. It not only2 great armies its a good way to get a mate addicted as well
happy weekender I think Spacehulk will always be in my top 5 if not my No1.
Firstly – great episode. Thanks for shaking things up a bit and I thoroughly agree with the Community Spotlight moving to frontstage – great showcase for the community.
As to GW well clearly the daddy has to be 40k, the best box set is the Middle Earth one but if I had a free choice I’d go for the Kill Team set. I’m trying to get a friend back into GW games. He has drifted into mostly historical (we usually play SAGA) but I know he started with 40k years ago and I’m sure I can drag him back in again. Kill Team gives the perfect opportunity as the low model count and exciting gameplay will win him over for sure!
I like the look of Kill Team as a way in (I am a newbie, still trying to decide on my entry point) but Adeptus Titanicus just looks like something I’d love to build.
i always wanted the silver tower box, that`s a very creative way of creating new layers of play in the 40K range/universe.
especially for everyone how are missing Ben.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=24&v=cwKWiZAuHoQ
Kill Team Rogue Trader or Dark Imperium for meeeeeeee!
After spending over 15 years being quite the GW fanboy I totally went 180° and became a GW hater over the last years. I had nothing got to say about them and boy did I let people know about that. But I have to say over the last two years the company is pushing all the right buttons – games-wise and community-wise – and I am getting really warm with it again. It’s good to be back 😀
I think that Necromunda is the best GW game currently. It ticks pretty much all of the hobby boxes for me. It allows me to:
* immerse myself in the world;
* finely tune an army list;
* name and build backgrounds and narratives for each gang member;
* build each mini;
* paint it;
* play in a campaign;
* build skills, develop experience, advance the narrative of the gang and characters
* And because the gangs are small, I can switch from faction to faction (relatively) inexpensively and quickly.
None of the other GW games tick all of the boxes to the same extent.
The starter box I would prefer is Speed Freekz!!! I’ll happily wait as long as it takes! 🙂 😀 🙂
Not a big GW fan but the Killteam with the cool terrain has caught my attention.
Space Crusade
Got me into the hobby which then progressed into 40k rogue trader.
I still play SC now with my 11 yr old nephew.
I haven’t yet played the “real” version of BlitzBowl, (but did try a few walk-throughs after watching the how-to-play video a few weeks back). It looks like it could be the fast-paced, exciting fantasy sports game Blood Bowl should have been. I played by first game of KillTeam and quite enjoyed it too, after not moving a mini on a tabletop for about twenty years. Best game? I’m going to plump for BlitzBowl (with KillTeam a close second)

Loving kill team from gw at the moment. Far more likely to get figures painted. As for big box games? I’d love to own necromunda. Had the original as a kid and would like to play this with my kids.
Or LotR! Who wouldn’t really want LotR?!?!
Kill Team, Rogue Trader for sentimental reasons.
GW has many good games, i relly like assasinorum execution force its fairly easy to learn and is quite fun to play. The cultists randomnes adds to the fun of you and three of your friends trying to stop the end of the choas domination of all that the emperor holds dear
love the show Guys I would say my number GW game that’s out would be Adeptus mechanicus epic is fabulous but has extra fleshy things. killteam looks great as good alternative to spacehulk I think from what I have seen. the rampage tiles look brilliant but to rich for me at the moment.
The Tooth and Claw is a pretty good. I kinda like the Kill team box set best with small models and awesome terrain.
The new Rogue Trader box set might be the best yet though.
I think i’d go with Kill Team, but Soul Wars is very very tempting.
I have loved playing Shadespire for Aid as well as killteam. These faster paced and smaller games have helped me to get more hobbying in, in less time!
Do have to say that the Dark Imperium set seems like a good intro set to the 40k verse. Then again I’ve never been a great fan of grandfather nurgle so the new tooth and claw set does seem interesting, although being a loyal member of the 1st legion I’d have to do the primaris marines as dark angels. And I would more likely use genestealer cults over death guard
I’ve been thinking about seriously getting into 40k because of Killteam, KT is heckin’ rad and now I wanna get me some real 40k (maybe via a dark imperium? ) lol
Tooth and Claw is great combo…space wolves and genestealers
I always look forward to Weekenders and XLBS, a perfect way to start my mornings, with coffee, here in Northern California. Tooth and Claw wll be an great addition to my hobby/addiction. I do love the smaller skirmish games of Necromunda and Kill Team. Like you guys discussed, the bigger sets give you a deep roster to build armies/squads for smaller battles.
Its worth noting because the guys missed a few details out on the Pelennor Fields box set that, there are modelling options to assemble the Fell Beast with two variants of regular Ring Wraiths in addition to the Witch King, also the Troll can be assembled as an Isenguard Troll with a shield, or as a Mordor Troll Drummer.
For me the best GW game is Blood Bowl. Next would be Middle-Earth SBG. Generally I’ve always liked the “Specialist Games” over the big 2.
I guess my favorite is good ol’ Warhammer 40k. I actually just got back into it after about a 5 year hiatus. I’m really liking the current edition. Very streamlined compared to what it used to be. Also, 40k seems almost to be universal when it comes to finding players. I can pretty much always find players no matter what city I’m in. I’m playing Space Marines now, but I started out with Necrons. I would love to get a Necron army going again. I think a great way to get started are the GW Start Collecting! box sets. In most of them, you get a HQ, troop, and a vehicle. So perfect for the starting player to get to sample everything. Great value compared to buying everything separate.
Killteam has energized my old 40K group, would love to get my hands on Rogue Trader next
Yeah, Killteam is the way to go on this one, but which box?
Am waiting for my Timtanicus to arrive to start playing the revamped epic
You guys have a fantastic grip on the hobby has a whole, it’s nice to get your views on GW these days and the positive turn around the biggest company in the hobby has had.
I’d definitely end up going for Lord of the Rings, GW have an amazing IP (I love that Stormcast ae space marines, it makes complete business sense and really brings together their 2 big game systems as it’s far less intimidating to learn two completely different systems than to have 2 similar IPs in different settings and get some synergies between them) but they cannot touch the Realm of middle earth for me. It’s the game I’d like to play with my kids, tell them the amazing stories, show them the amazing films and play with them the amazing game!
Warhammer 40k has the best starter sets (I miss Dark Vengeance).
Would love to have a chance to win a copy of the new LOTR BaPF starter set please guys :)
Age of Sigmar is growing on my thanks to the amazing coverage MiniWargaming is giving it, but for me Warhammer 40K is still my favorite game and the best system they make. The rules might be clunky at times but it has such a history that I can create any narrative game I can think of to play with my gaming group. I can also throw together a random army and play with total strangers too.
I am torn with the new claustrophobia. get the new one or keep my old copy?
Inquisitor. All the way. 28mm scale
Happy weekend!
A few years ago, i would’ve answer 40K in a heartbeat as my favorite GW game… Not so anymore. Althouth i still haven’t played it (or finished assembling it 😉 ), i would go for Kill Team as my favorite game, simply because i think it’s a superior quality product. I bought today Rogue Trader for the Rogue Trader team and even if i don’t really like Nurgle, i like most of the Nurgle minis. I’ve also been watching AoS more and more with the release of Soul War… And should i be lucky enough to win, i would like a Soul War box!
See you guys on XLBS
My fav has always been bloodbowl. I’ve played them all but bloodbowl was my gateway into the hobby.
Couldn’t say which GW starter is the best since I’m just getting started with the hobby, but Age of Sigmar: Soul Wars looks like a great box. I’m sure plenty of people think otherwise, but I would love to hear which I should go for as a beginner.
I’m on team Sam. Middle earth for the win!
I used to play 40k but stopped a few years ago because i didn’t like the direction it was going and also felt new edition came too fast. Also now i prefer skirmish style game. So i was thinking about kill team- rogue trader but a friend got it. I hate the look of the stormcast so shadespire isn’t an option so my choice would be necromunda.
How do you guys do this!!!!!
40k has my vote, it’s always held a special place. Good books, good models, incredible lore and a beautiful world. I had a falling out with GW, but really like the way they are moving now.
I think Kill Team might be the best game that I have personally interacted with from the currently supported games. I feel that it has a low buy in for starting players, as well as a way to taste the nuances of other armies in the 40K line. However, favorite game ever by GW is Trafalgar.
*crosses fingers* would love to win me a box of tooth and claw.
I have Dark Imperium. It tempted me to invest in a GW game for the first time in decades. It has core rules, cool rulers, dice and a ton of miniatures. I guess the only way they could have added to it would have been terrain, but then they would have never been able to make it affordable. I have naturally been adding to this collection, so as far as GW setting this edition up to drag new individuals into their main product line I am proof that it worked.
I also have Kill Team. Even though I really enjoy 40K now, I have always enjoyed skirmish games, and the two factions in the box were totally different to the Dark Imperium box and they both appealed to me.
The impact Dark Imperium had on my hobby has to make it my favourite starter set. That said, the starter I would like to have most would be the Lord of the Rings latest release. It was a game that passed me by and some of the Forgeworld pricing of the more appealing minis was massively off putting. I don’t think I would play the game at massive point levels, but the box already have the Rohirrim and the Orcs I would most like to fight with. Though finding a hobbit or two on ebay to spice up the storylines would be cool. (I already have Gandalf and Radagast as part of my Frostgrave collection ?. ) Lots of minis and full rules being included makes it a really appealing prospect.
When Justin’s right, Justin’s right! Necromunda is my vote. Great game, campaign system so much fun, and good price to get into 40k.
Weekender is the best part of my weekend.
And Kill Team really is now the gateway drug to the 40/30k universe.
Killteam is good.
The Middle Earth box is truly amazing. But I have to say I am a huge fan of the Rogue Trader minis they got coming out. Other than that, Soul Wars for sure.
Kill Team, I like the more skirmishy elements of it.
Good show as always, in regards to GW games. I stopped playing awhile ago due to pricing here in Australia. That being said I still have favorites that I indulged on the rare occasion.
1st place pick :Middle Earth. I love the setting, but as no-one near me plays anymore, I’m am bequeathing it to a mate.
2nd place pick: Blood bowl. I have played every table version of this since 2nd Ed arrived complete with plastic mini’s and the polystyrene board. what’s not to love about smashing someone into the ground! Especially with my custom Lizardman team!
Game to bring back: Inquisitor, but in 28mm. This was a perfect blend of RPG and skirmish in the grim dark. Would use the old Necromunda stuff for scenery and opponents/characters, but with a good story line to link each scenario (we had a brilliant but extremely ruthless, bloodthirsty, eccentric GM. I believed he worshiped Malal, the forgotten Chaos god)
What is On Table Top?
here you go @mischief 🙂
https://www.beastsofwar.com/featured/another-small-step/
Yea right, a combination of rebranding, and expansion, that’s neat. So the old Beast of War will change, but what about Backstage?
We might look at that later, always open to suggestions 🙂
While I love the Genestealer Cult stuff I’m not so keen on Marines in general,
so I’d rather go for Killteam: Rogue Trader as the new Elucidan Starstiders are cool and retro and the Nurgle stuff would slot right into my Deathguard, and that’s before I even try the game they’re intended for
The only thing Games Workshop produces for me nowadays are fond memories of their past games and washes.
I am so distanced from GW that I see them for a different prism, their games are not that good and their image is too specific, it works for now and admittedly it is what carried them in their darkest years, but it might be an issue for them in the future, essentially they are an almost one trick pony at the moment they indeed trow too much out, because they have the capital and the industrial base to do so, but they have zero diversification of product one would expect from an Industry leader.
This makes them vulnerable when the “Grimdark” wears off, it may be a long time ago, it may be sooner than we expect, but for me that has wore off they offer nothing of interest, I really liked rogue trader era aesthetics when you had a true sci fi universe and aesthetics conflicting with a post apocalyptic dystopian future that was the fluff, then they went and had to “grimdark” it to make it unique.
On your subject I have fond memories of Rogue Trader and the old necromunda even second edition of 40k, but nothing after than, the digital games other companies made in the 40k universe are more appealing, because they treated the universe in a different way, truer to the idea and spirit of what 40k should be or used to be than GW does now.
From a mechanical standpoint Warhammer underworlds (shadespire for those that do not know it was not the product lines name) is the best game they have on offer right now and it is the best by a mile to all their other offers, it is so far away from what GW games are that it is sad it has an Age of Sigmar paint on it and it does not have a new IP based on it.
Now to be a bit controversial, can we have less frequent GW love-fests? I feel it does not add anything significant to the brand of OTT or to the appeal of the weekender product, sprinkle GW topics around, don’t turn a variety show in a sole company spotlight, especially of you do not do it for any other company, want to show your GW fanboysm either make it a special or a make it a regular segment.
when was the last GW love fest?
That is a good question, the other good question would be when was the first love fest for any other company, there is none, while GW has its fair few of them,I am not saying not be a fun of GW, that would be silly and a mood killer for the production team, we all like things and have our special games and companies and I understand the popularity GW has in the viewer base, but why not shape a segment of the site in been that, instead of turning what I consider a good variety show showcasing various companies and news into a one company segment, even if it is for 1/52 times of the year?
Sorry if I sounded jaded in the last part it was not meant to be that jaded.
yes you sound jaded
other games get full week love fests on here.
You are entirely right the last segment of my comment was uncalled for and in retrospect I should not have wrote it, at least not in this way, apologies for that, call it a misstep of the moment.
no problem mate we all need a vent sometimes 🙂
Thanks for your understanding.
I think my current favorite is The Battle of Pelennor Field. I LOVE that new Theoden model. That’s what I would choose if I won.
Adeptus Titanicus looks like a really good game. Seems my strategic than the other 40k offerings. I wonder if they will ever bring back the imperator class titan.
To throw my hat into the ring, I’d want to say spacehulk but that wasn’t on the list. I’m loving the night haunt miniatures that are coming out but as an original rogue trader boy I’d have to go with 40K (1st ed rules, so I can build shampoo bottle land speeders!)
With regards to the steam forged Kickstarter, I’m sorry but as much as I like the minis and the idea behind the game I will not back that company again. They have totally taken their eye off the ball with fulfilling the rest of the dark souls Kickstarter and although they have finally employed (spammed) someone with customer relations on this, there are a lot of very unhappy backers out there (me included). It seems that the focus is constantly shifting to new products, which whilst I understand they need to do to survive, their reputation for doing what they say is also vitally important. No company is bigger than its customers, just look at all of the bridge building GW have done since a change at the top.
Of all times? Probably Warmaster. In production? Age of Sigmar. My favorite army in WFB was always lizardmen, the most far-out of the otherwise bog standard medieval tropes. Now we have damp elves, steamship dwarves, golden lightning men of sigmar and a bunch of others, too far out for WFB factions. The game improved massively with 2nd ed and General Handbooks, and is far more pleasant to play than WFB ever was to me. More fluid, faster, and with combat being resolved by glorious victory or death, not combat rank modifiers.
I like both Deathwatch Overkill and Lost Patrol. Both are easy to get into and surprisingly fun to play. The models are all great and especially Deathwatch gives you a nice collection of models to paint up. The space marines are varied and the genestealer cult is a nice jump off point for a 40K army.
It has to be adeptus titanicus because of the epic Ness!
Kill Team is the best as far as I’m concerned, although since I already have that starter the Tooth and Claw box would be sweet to add to the Gcult collection. Otherwise any one of the kill team boxes (Outside of Writhing Shadow) would be AMAZING.
Great video, very informative to someone who is just started to collect
Starter sets looking great!
Another fab show and with a great giveaway too.
@warzan I managed to jump in on Kill Team really cheaply by buying 3 copies of Conquest at £1.99 each. I’ve since bought the rule book as its a great game, and will be my main 40k fix.
Having so much fun with Kill Team at the moment, A great big vibe around it in the store
Lord of the Rings, despite starting in 40k and Warhammer, still gets me coming back
My Fav GW game was the 10mm Battle of the five armies game as it looked epic on the table and i think was the first large scale 10mm Plastic game GW have done like this, wish they would do it again as buying multiple sets would make the battlefield look amazing.
Currently i think GW’s Kill Team is the best starters set out there with its terrain and it brining in 2 factions to the table that event had the same light as others till now, saying this tooth and claw and forge bane have now been out for a bit that also included these factions.
nice one guys, just show GW got there head on
What a time to be alive 🙂
40k and Epic have a special place in my heart ever since I stumbled upon “rogue trader” rule set back in the day. However for a left field choice I’d say the Battle for Armageddon hex based game. It was fab! Could have a planet sized conflict complete with titan legions without the need to fork out a fortune in minatures. Could be set up and played in a reasonable time scale too. Don’t suppose anyone has the PDF version of the game that’s GW apparantly released a while back. I missed it and would love to be able to play it again!
Always been hooked by GW, currently working through some Adeptus Titanicus. My favourite game would have to be Blood Bowl. If I win I’d like to get back into LoTR SBG. Also if they brought back Aeronautica I’d be all over it! ?
Wish I could squeeze Adeptus Titanicus into my already crowded GW gaming addiction!
I do have a soft spot for Blood Bowl, not sure it’s their best game but it was the first starter set I ever bought (3rd ed) and it was the game that brought me back to GW games after a long time out. Now I’m getting involved with Blood Bowl, Necromunda, Kill Team and possibly Age of Sigmar.
Blood Bowl & Space Hulk are all I have owned. The other games always seem too big and involved to commit to. But I’ve always wanted to try.
If you think playing GW games is fun as it is, Imagine living in Australia. Same excact experience except everything is completely upsidedown 🙂
(and double price for everything haha).
Being serious though the Dark imperium is a great entry for anyone new or returning to 40k.
The tooth and claw models are very pretty though!
Blood bowl is the game for me. Whilst the rules are a bit dated, it is reasonably accessible and if you don’t like a team, it is not that much hassle to get another. It got me interested into the hobby twice, once as a kid when the second edition was released and then again after a break from the hobby. Looking at the current games it would be kill team or Necromunda that i would go for – if i could justify increasing the plastic pile
so i would like to order one pizza with extra cheese. Shame that they didnt remake gorkamorka but did make speed freeks
if I was picked it would one of the best games around, it is, lord of the rings. I have a hoard of goblins, the ones that are better than the smelly feet hobbits.
Coming back to both BoW and GW. The new Middle Earth release got me buying a White Dwarf and planning on the box set (when I get over to the UK this Christmas as Australian prices are…..). Then it’s pulling out the horde of minis and perhaps painting and playing.
The best gw game for me is lotr/hobbit, the game system is great and my youngest daughter (12)picked up the rules quite easily (happy dad) . Second game will be mordheim and i agree with Warren and Sam , if they ever relaunch this game than in the old warhammer fantasy setting
I really love the battle of Pelennor fields box. it brings me back to when i first got into wargaming. when i was 8, I got a box of Uruk-Hai and riders of Rohan and since then I’ve been hooked on all table top games ? Can’t wait to get my hands on one!!
There have been so many! I really enjoyed the Horus Heresy games, and the new LotR box set looks fantastic especially the new scalp of Theoden can’t wait to get my hands on him. But i think my favourite box game has to be Titanicus!!!! I got the big boxset and created my own death guard style legion. also the rule system is really ingauging
Games Workshop has been impressive in their choices in the last few years. That multiple big ticket items are sold out on their web site it would seem that the market agrees.
Love Games Workshop and Beasts of War!
Love Beasts of War and Games Workshop!
As a current starter set Kill Team is my favourite. Mostly because our group has been doing skirmish games for a while now as we usually have enough time to figure out who would probably win.
Current games I would say Kill Team. I like the alternate shooting that kind of softens that benefit of winning initiative.
Although Necromunda is my favorite GW game at the moment (unless they bring back Mordheim- which they won’t do cause it doesn’t fit in their Vor the Mealstrom abomination of AoS), Kill Team is a better starter. In my opinion GW really missed a beat by having only 2.5D terrain in the box. THe under hive only shines when there are multiple elevations.
Out of the current crop of games I will say Warhammer Quest Silver Tower given the solo component. That said it’s hard not to admit that Blood Bowl should probably top any list given that no matter how much GW ignores it it never dies.
No love for Blood Bowl? Nuffle’s not satisfied
Great weekender this week. And AOS is my pick.
I am loving the look of the new Kill Team Rogue Trader so that would be 1st. 2nd would be Underworld for me probably because most of the club i go to also play it 🙂
I like the look of Kill Team. As much as I love the lore of 40k, I’m not too fussed about the game itself. Building a custom squad of Skitarii rangers, each with their own unique identity and role on the battlefield, sounds amazing though. It opens up a ton of conversion opportunities as the campaign progresses.
Love Shadespire! Fast, minis and cards, friendly. Waiting for Nightvault now and willing to have my first Kill Team.
Given the Rogue Traders are a ship crew, and the battle is sit on board a ship in space, why are they all bassed standing on dirt and grass?
i preferred the look of fantasy battle, hoping sigmar is just as good
I’m getting real interested in the Middle-Earth Battle Box, as everyone talks warmly about the ruleset. And as it’s based on a widely known IP, it would be easier getting someone to try it. Dark Imperium also looks like it has a lot of bang for its buck, with the complete hardcover rulebook included.
Even with the large scale games 40k and AoS, I think you have to go to their intro games as the “best” for what they are bringing into the hobby – More new gamer’s than ever before. Warhammer Quest was one of their best sellers, and the new starter sets get better and better! But right now – for the long term health of GW – Kill Team looks amazing and is drawing tons of people into the game – and giving others the chance to dabble into other armies they would never have thought to try.
It’s good to see GW coming out with so many great products. Would love to win one of those sweet starter sets!
Hello, Hello…loving the show as always, Really love Titanicus, Tooth and claw is also just outstanding
As of late GW has been putting out great miniatures and all the starter boxes look amazing. I never got to play Necromunda way back when, so I’d probably go with that. Then again Kill Team also looks great.
My pick for favorite GW game of all time would be Mordheim. If it is remade I don’t think it needs too much of a rules update. (Although, limiting number of ranged weapons? yes, please!) But collecting all the rules that came out over the years in a new book would be great. Redo the popular warbands with todays sculpting standards and they can empty wallets faster than a Skaven band can collect wyrdstone shards.
For the current range my pick would be Killteam. The new sets look great and it would be an easy way to get back into the 40K universe. After I’m done with the starter box I could dust off my older 40K models to create alternative teams for years of replayability.
Necromunda. Though Shadespire is a close second.
40k for me definitely..played back in 2nd through 4th edition but unfortunately my collection was mostly destroyed in a car crash about 15 years ago..just recently getting back into it with kill team but looking to expand and maybe eventually get back into tourneys. Amazing content guys keep it up
Love 40k!
Of the sets mentioned in your video, perhaps my favorite was the Lord of the Rings: Battle of Pelennor. When I was younger, I collected and painted lots of warhammer fantasy battle, but eventually moved away from them. As much as I like fantasy miniatures, I’m not a fan of the bulky armor in age of sigmar. I picked up escape from goblin town and am currently painting the dwarven characters while at my mother in law’s house due to the hurricane florence evacuation.
Best game from GW right now is Age of Sigmar. Great story, great models, and with the new edition of the game the rules are fantastic.
Kill Team starter set
Without a shadow of a doubt the best game GW have produced for me is Lord of the Rings. It’s such a fantastic game and the real driving force behind why I got into this hobby properly. It’s the one game I still continue to play to this day regularly and the only game system I have multiple complete armies for. The tournament scene behind it is truly fantastic as well, made so many great lifelong friends through the game that I just wouldn’t have met had it not been for LotR. Such a great game that was kept alive by the community when GW really didn’t support it all that well. Now that’s all changed, it’s just had a fantastic new edition released and the game just continues to go from strength to strength.
GW is going from strength to strength.
Warhammer 40k!
I’ve wanted to check Warhammer 40k forever and boy do I’m glad I did.
What could be better than a fantasy gane – in the future. In one sentence – Orcs with Lasers 🙂
Middle-earth Strategy Battle Game is easily Games Workshops best game!
Kill Team!
Really want to get in to Adeptus Titanicus!
I am still having a great time building and painting the Dark Imperium set. Especially since it contains the full rule book I think it probably the best point to start.
Now winning the Tooth and Claw set I would not mind, since some more Marines could not hurt. I painted two Genestealers in my life and they were rather fun to paint. I would probably not buy the box as an add on to the starter set, but I wouldn’t say no to winning it.
Very difficult choice, I bought them all….yes, they’re doing great things. But I have to agree with Warren, Adeptus Titanicus is probably my favorite of the lot. Not only has the best kits I have ever assembled in my 30+ years of wargamer but also all the other components are beautiful and the rules seems solid (still have to play it)
I love all those entry games. Underworlds and Kill Team are both great. Those two player campaign sets are great idea too.
But as far as Tooth and Claw is great Dark Imperium would make me even happier 😀 (not that much into GeneCult)
I believe that Kill Team is the best starter set as it is getting some of us back into 40k. I now have 2 Kill teams and can add to them with small boxes plus am getting Rogue Trader.
I agree that the amount of terrain is a great magnet. Cheers
A little late this week – I’m playing catch-up!
I almost skimmed through this weekender since, to me, GW have not made a decent game for probably 15 Years! In fact, for me, the original Quest was their last great game.
If I had to pick current stock, it’s Lord of the Rings. It’s still not epic, but almost the best of a bad bunch!
The Rohan models are great and something I really would like to paint though.
LOTR Battle of Pelennor Fields wins my vote
Personally I think Rogue Trader has been the thing most likely to draw me back to GW, shame its an expansion not an alternative starter box.
For 40k main though, the Tooth and Claw set does have appeal as the Genestealer cult are an old favourite well updated. I just don’t think I want to get into the 40k model count/vehicles thing, so kill team skirmish takes the lead for me as something I might play with my nephew.
My vote is on MESBG. It’s still the best ruleset that the have designed.
Horus Heresy game system is the best! The new Rogue Trader Kill Team has peaked my interest tho.
I would love to see Mordhiem back! AoS could be called Glam Fantasy. I would rather see it in the Old World. Tho i don’t see that happening, unfortunately.
Renegade would be awesome if possible. Or Pelennor Fields
All Father watch over you all
An unsurprisingly popular show to comment on for some reason!
I love Soul Wars, but saying I’d want a 3rd copy is a bit much! If I was to pick one of the starters, I think it would be Kill Team – love the terrain, like the model choices and it’s probably the only way I could get back into the 40K universe again (not too much to paint!)
I started as a wee nipper effectively dipping space marines in ultramarines blue so 40k will always have a special place in my collection. I still play a lot of 40k but for me, Epic was the one that made me fall in love with wargaming.
i must say im impressed with kill team. it has dragged me back into 40k as i can get collect all the different armies
The Original 1995 Warhammer Quest would have to be my absolute Favourite GW Box Set! If I was to win I would be keen on the new LOTR box set. Those Perry Twins sculpts are amazingly nice.
I think that the recent skirmish style games are the best. As the low model count games seem to be the norm for me these days. I think Kill team is the best because of all the fluff in the 40K universe.
Having succumbed to the temptation and got most of the new GW boxes I would still go with tooth and claw as I don’t have that one
As I have a soft spot for both Space Wolves and Genestealer Cults, Tooth and Claw is very appealing to me. However, since painting time is at a premium it is easier for me to get Kill Team forces on the tabletop in a short time. Since I can also get Space Wolves and Genestealer Cults for this game, I would have to say that Kill Team would be my preference.
Tooth and claw- other wise silver tower would be my favourite game to have 😀 I love the way you spoke of it and did some research looks great!
As always a little late, but I must say this is the perfect way to start my mondays 🙂 Thanks for a fantastic weekender.
Ahh GW I can barely keep up at the moment – For me it has to be Killteam at the moment as time has passed I have less and less time to do thinks like paint armies so Skirmish gaming is where it is at.
Tooth and Claw would be great but if possible and I win the Rogue Trader Box or Shadespire starter would be amazing!
40k brought me into the hobby when I was at Uni; kids/wife/life made me sit on the side-lines and watch from afar. 🙁
So I have fond feelings of 40k and the friendships I built across the tabletop.
Saying that, I’d probably look at a skirmish starter kit so I can introduce my son to the hobby; 5 years old should be old enough?!
Bought several GW boxes this year: Forgebane, Necromunda, Soul Wars, Kill Team, Rogue Trader and Pelennor Fields.
All have their merits, but most have a crappy second army (in order… Skitarrii, Fat Bikers, Fantasy Marines, Skitarrii, Nurgle and Orcs)…
I feel that Pelennor Fields is the best of them in that respect as orcs least crap.
Rogue Trader team look great and you don’t feel like you’re building an army… but an RPG party.
Tooth and Claw would get scavenged for Kill Team.
Honestly I think my favorite has to be the new Soul Wars. The Nighthaunts really give you the feeling of ghosts on the tabletop. The Stormcast Eternals in the set have more character to them than the previous Stormcast models have had.
I have been playing the heck out of Kill Team. It’s probably my favorite thing GW have ever done. GW have simply been moving from strength to strength since just after Tom Kirby left, and it just keeps getting better.
I’m currently painting my first Warlord Titan from Adeptus Titanicus. It’s easily the most time I’ve ever spent on a single model, but I am LOVING it.
8th edition brought me back to GW, and while I used to keep my eye on piles and piles of other manufacturers and game systems, this summer had me trimming things down to just a handful of things to keep the number of Projects under control. Team Yankee is the only non-GW wargame that remains actively on the radar.
Great show this week!
That new Dungeon terrain looks fantastic. I feel that the idea of pre-building really sells it much more than just looking gorgeous.
For me the best current boxed set would be Necromunda. I had great fun playing that game the first time round, and I love what I’ve seen of the update. The narrative in that game extended all the way through- before, during and after the actual battle.
I totally get where @warzan is coming from though regarding Warhammer Quest. It’s the reason why my fantasy collection is so diverse today: I just wanted so many options to run at my players. It was a table-top miniatures RPG, and again the story and RPG elements continued outside the dungeon. Going to town could be just as hazardous/ adventurous as the Dungeon. Unfortunately I’ve yet to have a chance to look into modern Warhammer Quest, but I have a sense that it lacks much of the RPG element of old…
I’m sure someone else has mentioned it by now, but “Four Against the Dark” was the game @warzan was trying to recall.
I’m a huge fan of AOS 2.0. It took what was already a fun game and tweaked what was needed to be tweaked to make it more fun and accessible. I’m especially excited for all of the new stuff coming out for Underworlds. Finally a Tzeentch warband!
I haven’t played Claustrophobia, but what you said on the video made me very interesting. Cool setting. Also very excited for Horizon Zero Dawn. I loved the playing the digital game, I can’t wait to see some gameplay from the board game.
There’s so many more big names on that Frostgrave author list!
I’m loving the new Kill Team game at the moment.
I gotta say, the Kill Team box is an amazing entry level box. The two teams are solid and the terrain is a joy to build and monkey around with. The game itself is fun and fast. It takes my top spot. While I love the new edition of 40K, my second place goes to Shadespire. Such a perfectly compact little game. We play it in the office on our lunchbreaks on occasion.
I’ve been pretty impressed with the amount of people that the Kill Team box set brought back to the hobby. I find the game very satisfying to play. I totally whiffed and missed out on Shadow War.
Busy weekend , 1st chance to watch today, difficult to keep up with GW at moment, some Space puppies for me!
Currently, my favorite GW game is Killteam. I like small model count skirmish games because I can individualize each model. Plus I hate playing with unpainted minis while at the same time I’m an incredibly slow painter. If I won, I would like a copy of Warhammer 40k Forgebane, because then I would have two full Adeptus Mechanicus and Necron killteams.
My favorite GW game has to be Lord of the Rings. I like the clean rules and how personal it can feel with a hero performing heroic actions to turn the tide of battle!
Tough question indeed. I love AoS and 40k, and the Middle-Earth game is very tempting right now. But if I have to choose, I would choose Titanicus. Reason: Titans man! Titans! A lot of them! Who would argue with that?
Considering that the new Middle-Earth SBG starter set is the first non-paint product I’ve purchased from GW for close to 5 years, I’ve got to give it the top spot. But! The new Speed Freaks game will surely be a close contender. Because ORKS!, SPEED, DAKKA and WAAAAAGH!!!
Oh and I’m lucky enough to be picked, a Pelennor Fields set please 🙂
He have a lot of great games but the LOTR sbg is by far the best, fantastic models which still hold up 2 decades after they were released and a great set of rules
Before 8th edition 40k come out, Lord of The Rings was my favourite GW game, even though i had pretty much never played it, i still loved the rules, and of course theme. Now that 8th edition is out…im not sure,i think maybe Middle Earth still edges the lead a bit. The problem i have now though is that they are releasing too many things and my paycheques cant keep up, I dabble a little in Sigmar, love 40k, spent far..far…far too much when Pelennor Fields came out, only just bought Kill Team rulebook today, (because i really want to get the Rogue Trader set at some point), I’ve fallen behind on my Necromunda purchases, I can’t wait for Orktober….ARGH too many things, and it’s even worse when GW products are still only a small part of my hobby (I also play Bolt Action, X-wing, Board Games, and im trying to save for a new pc…..)
As for starter sets, or boxed games, the quality has definitely shot up, love the fact that the starter set comes with full hard back rulebooks, and tons of models to get going with.
Would love a 2nd copy of Pelannor Fields btw 😉 or Rogue Trader, as i am currently unable to get them myself
A very interesting Weekender, almost a mind melter when you think of the range of GW games and miniatures. A few years ago everyone thought Games Workshop were on the slide. Its existing games were becoming stale and the competition was growing. But the boffins at GWHQ keep pulling rabbits out of the hat, reinvigorating old games and developing new ones with new and more dynamic miniatures. What ever you think of Games Workshop as far as gaming is concerned it is the past, the present, and the future of the hobby.
I’m a fantasy gamer myself so my votes go for Age of Sigmar Soul Wars.
Best GW game for me is a tough one. Really loved the old Epic and Adeptus Titanicus. But I’d have to go for Blood Bowl, I love the fluff and humour in the game.
Just looking at a way to get myself and the group into Age of Sigma, this could work out well :)
It all started for me with Isle of Blood Warhammer fantasy battles so it would be that for me, Age of Sigma is fine now I have gotten used to the change.
The more that is said about LOTR the more I want to check it out so I will probably pick that up soon.
Tooth and Claw is a good set, I would have preferred if it was Orks and Spaces wolves.
But The Lord of the Rings Battle of Pelennor Fields is still the best starter set and great rules
Sort of getting back in to the hobby with all the recent hype around Killteam and AoS. It’s been over a decade since I last played, but I’ve been painting off and on in between.
Fingers crossed
Kill Team Rogue Trader looks pretty good.
For me, 40k is the best. I got my start in 5th edition, building up a nice sized mechanized guard force. My fondest memory is a two day Apoc match. Imperium vs all. Something like 20-25 people. We’d have quick strategy meetings, and then each side would get 30 minutes to do their turn. Utter chaos. You would just hear “those 20 orks on the chapel ruin took 24 bolter wounds, roll saves” or a pie plate template would appear and someone would tell you the reaver on the other side of the board shot his volcano cannon over here, get ready to remove models. Some of the best fun I’ve had on a table top. Imperials won (my guardsmen were gone in the first few hours) but it was definatly a pyhrric victory.
I’ve been a GW patron for over 30 years (yes I’m an old fart), and seen all of the incantations of their games. My favourite is the new 40K. I love the base rules and enables fast fun gaming with the option to add more levels of complexity. I’m am also a Space Wolf player 😉
At present I would say that the middle earth game is their most solid game. I am interested in kill team, but that is more as a concept than as a ruleset. Being brutally honest sbg aside I think the the best they have achieve is playable games in the last decade (that is to my personal taste), while I can enjoy playing things like 8th, blood bowl etc I find they don’t scratch the itch for sustained play.
As to best game of all time for me it was warmaster, a dynamic and elegant system – which also translated into the battle of five armies and to an extent war of the ring. Although Mordhiem, bloodbowl and original Necromunda have a lot of attached nostalgia
best gw game is bloodbowl. all you need is one starter and voila, it is complete. you can add teams but your investment is really limited so you don’t have to have a huge financial commitment. switching teams with friends a.so keep the c9sts dowm. best game. 2nd is space hulk. again, you only need the box and that’s it.bloodbowl better since you can have more than 2 players, space hulk that is not really possible , ok, it is, but having different teams makes it very fluid and dynamic
I guess if I had to play a GW game it would be Adeptus Titanicus. I love me some mechs!
For me it has to be Kill Team, it is not only a great game but its totally invigorated my local game scene, it’s bringing people back to GW and even enticing new ones. In a close second would be a tie for Necromunda and Shadespire.
As far as box sets go, I have very much been enjoying Kill team. It has everything you need to play games and is also great fun.
Looking forward to seeing the warhammerquest 40k when this is released.
Only just got back into wargaming around a year ago, but really liking Kill Team at the moment. First bit of 40k I’ve tried. But wouldn’t mind trying the longer game
Only really tried Age of Sigmar and Kill Team so can’t say what’s the best, but really liking Kill Team
Of all the GW games I’ve had fun over the last 20 odd years I think my favourite is Blood Bowl. Even when I went through a non gaming period. Blood Bowl would be the acception. Nothing like a Blood Bowl league to get the fun going.
kill team is looking like an absolute winner for me. alongside the likes of space hulk etc. Dont have the time for 100 model armies any more… kids and jobs get in the way!
Though I have not played it yet, Adeptus Titanicus is the one that have me most excited at the moment. Of the ones I tried Kill team is my current favourite though.
I do miss Mordheim though
I’ve always just circles the GW Universe but never gone in. Now my wife and I are starting to paint figures ( a first for both of us) and we are overwhelmed in the last few weeks! This video is great. We are loving the Stormcast Eternals but would pick (instead of 40K) Pelenor Fields! Here’s to hoping!!
Shadespire at GW is really a great game. However, their LOTR range is the best ruleset they have imo
Kill Team and AOS Skirmish have been pumping through my veins this past year. I am really hoping for an AOS 2.0 update to Skirmish.
So many games, but I still love 40k 🙂
GW is really killin’ it right now! That dark imperium box <3
Another vote for Middle Earth SBG!
Never played Horizon Zero Dawn, don’t have a PS4, but the board game looks interesting.
Lots of miniatures.
Right now I’m fully into Kill Team. I’ve compiled quite the list of GW games that have sadly yet to be played. Most of my time has been with building and painting for KT.
Looking forward to playing them all, but has to be Kill Team for now.
Killteams has been a really good deal, between the terrain and a game that I can get friends who have shy’d away from the price of full 40k can have a lot of fun just buying a single killteam. Pretty tough to beat that in terms of fun per dollar spent.
Current game would be Necromunda or Kill Team. All time favourite is Mordheim 🙂
If I get lucky, put me down for a Kill Team Rogue trader please 🙂
Great overview of all the current GW products. Makes me want to get those Middle Earth and Age of Sigmar starters 😛
At the moment my favourite game is probably Necromunda. I have some serious time constraints in my life at the moment that pretty exclude me from Age of Sigmar or 40k so smaller games really are my priority. They also suit my creative side much better allowing me to focus a lot more on each model and of course paint a multitude of different things rather than grinding out 2000 points of something.
Kill team definitely scores highly but for me it’s games like Necromunda that really bring the 40k universe to life and start giving some additional context beyond the seemingly never ending warzones. I think the Rogue Trader expansion for Kill Team probably ticks exactly the same boxes as Necromunda, it’s a further insight into the 40k universe, away from the huge warzones. It’s already inspired me to start building an Inquisitorial Kill team by proxying miniatures 1 for 1 and using the Rogue Trader rules
Killteam. GW finally got my attention with the Rogue Trader unit.
Hard choice. Kill Team for the terrain or Lord of the rings for theme… Will go for theme for this one, LOTR it is!
Would have to be a toss up between Dark Imperium, Necromunda, and Soulwars, great value for money, able to start into the game immediately.
As much as it breaks my heart to say, but redirecting their resources from Warhammer fantasy (it lives forever in my heart) is most likely they only way they’ve cranked out so many games.
It feels like I’m back in the 90s with all the games they’ve got, they just need to rehash Man’o’War and the circle will be complete!
I stoped playing any games workshop game since years ago. But the new Age of Sigmar box with the nighthaunt is bringing me back. I love how they streamlined the rules for easier play.
I would looove to see a reprint of Mordheim!!! But set in the Old World. Battlefleet Gothic would be a close second for a comeback! If I recall correctly, there were some rumors so I keep my hopes up 🙂
Tooth and claw looks great to me since I’m getting back into 40k.
Its such a hard to chose, there is so many good set out there right now. You get god value for the money. My favorite game have to be Middle earth. But the starter boxes i really would like to get at some point will AOS soul wars. I have been getting in to lore of AOS and the Soul Wars bbl book is bloody amazing! And now i really want to start on some storm cast from the book. @dracs i love the old world, and there is a lot of hints to the old world in the soul wars book, and you get a really felling of both humans and storm cast, and that they are not space marines, in the slightest. If you want a good book into aos i will recomend it. Two other series I would recommend is Spear of Shadows and City of Secrets, if you ever dare to walk beyond the old world 😉
Shadespire is definitely at the top of my list right now (I have almost all the first gen stuff now) but I reeeeally want to get into Titanicus. Probably the only way Ill ever be able to afford my dream of having full maniple of titans.
Would probably prefer a Titanicus box to the new wolf/genestealer set.
Which is best? The one I am enjoying at the moment!
I really enjoyed playing Epic 40K – although it was sold as ‘Space Marine’ and was the second version. Hoping that the new Adeptus Titanicus is expanded as the original was.
Blood Bowl and Man O War were also great games, especially as I played them at a time with great friends. And I just loved Battlefleet Gothic.
And LOTR – as a big Tolkien fan I couldn’t get enough!
Overall, best GW game? Epic 40!
Gorka Morka was my favourite, it got the setting so much better than any game since, which take it way too seriously. If I was to get a GW big box now, it would be LotR: Battle of Pelennor Fields or Adeptus Titanicus
Necromunda kicks ass, but I’ve got my eye on Kill Team: Rogue Trader!
Really liking the small focused skirmish games coming from GW. Kill team looks amazing, gets the 40k scratch itched but without the massive investment.
Really hoping that they continue and go really deep into the lore and bring out some amazing themed forces.
I really love the look of Dark Imperium. I’ve come recently got into Wahammer 40,000 via the Conquest magazine. I think to win Dark Imperium or any of the 40,000 starters would be brilliant.
My group has been enjoying Kill Team.
Kill team looks amazing and is easy to get friends into. I also really love all the different terrain you can build. Hand down my pick.
40k is still the game I like most. It’s the classic really 😀
New GW reminds me of the good old days that got me into the hobby w/ big boxes like 1st ed Space Hulk, 2nd ed 40K, and OG Warhammer Quest. So much variety – but the best of GW for me is still good ol’ 40K. Kill Team also looks great – tho I love the theme of Tooth & Claw!
Probably for me it was the Mordhiem box set. A single purchase gave you everything you ever needed rule wise, and the sculpts were the first that went away from the typical “heroic” offerings to looking more like the John Blanche artwork (amazing work on the metals by the Perry Twins). Finally we had miniatures that looked like a mix of your average population (rather than a Hollywood cast), we had fat, old, young, ugly, and yes a few heroic types mixed in. Really got into the painting of those and trying to recreate the world of Blanche on the tabletop (and the rules were extremely good from the get go).
On the current offerings, probably Bloodbowl comes in next. It’s the similar twist that GW started with 40K Rogue Trader (take Sci-fi now add your typical fantasy races). Blood Bowl was American Football and now add your typical fantasy races 🙂
I feel the love for all things AOS! That being said I would be just as happy getting into some 40k with tooth and claw >;)
Titans have represented the dream of many players for years, given their size compared to other models. I hope I can get my hands on one of them.
I would have to say that Shadespire is a great game and Blood Bowl is just silly fun. My favorite would probably have to be 40k. However, I have not played any of the skirmish style games like Kill Team, which I’m sure I would enjoy.
@warzan I’m up for being a monster (or whatever else) in that dungeon, finally my costume making skills would come in handy! 😀
Just as soon as I get a healthy lottery win, I will be knocking on your door! lol
More seriously though (because I don’t even play the lottery) I’d love to know more about your costume stuff, did you start any projects on that?
Just last week I ordered tooth and claw to split it with a friend so we could kick start our armies and now you’re telling me I might have gotten it for free? Well, a few extra aberrants won’t hurt anyone, right? Although that rogue trader box looks fantastic too. Just looking at the details of that three-headed guy, it would be such a joy to paint. I need to get my hands on that core book for it, so I can start fielding what little I got.
Just wished there was something like kill team for fantasy. You would have your own band of mercenaries, fulfil “contracts”, not just war related, but also things such as escorting (or raiding) a merchants caravan, and gain renown.
A belated finish of watching the show this week. Fantastic as ever, Sam is right, Troll Hunters is a great series, well worth a watch on netflix (if only to see Kelsey Grammar at work again).
Fantastic idea to see such a comprehensive overview of the current starter sets. I have to say my favourite would probably be Soul Wars, I feel I have to say that as its the only one of this crop that I have gone out and bought! Loving the Nighthaunts. So for a second favourite, I think I quite like the look of KillTeam, that small-scale squad based game appeals to me, and it’s a nice way to play in the 40k universe without having to pick up a big army.
I very much enjoyed playing Horizon: Zero Dawn, it always had a wonderful art direction and lovely to see it so faithfully captured here on the tabletop. Hope we get a let’s play at some point in the future.
Sorry to say I’ve had to miss the LiveStreams due to some long hours at the office, but I look forward to catching up with them.
Been a while since I watched the show but great as ever ? I would go for tooth and claw as no 40k in the collection:)
Just made an account to do this?I’m new to warhammer and only got a few bits of adeptus mechanicus, sadly don’t have to money for anymore at the moment, I could really do with a win for a forgbane box set to help me get started playing as well. Now commented on this and the vid on YouTube?loved it!.
I thought the early 2000s was the golden era for GW gaming but the sheer options of game formats and quality of models is par none now. If they release AoS Skirmish at the same level of Kill Team, or an AoS: Mordheim, we would be complete.
Currently I love Kill Team and Underworlds. The ability to dabble in other forces and have small projects just scratches the gaming and hobby itch.
PS- I would love to get Rogue Trader Kill Team.
The reconcilliation of Beasts of War with Games Workshop continues…
My current GW Big Box Games Wish List is probably:
Dark Imperium
Horus Heresy Battle for Calth
Titanicus
Soul Wars
My favourite getting started set has to be ‘The battle of Pelennor fields’ such great value and despite their age many of the models hold up well today. If I had to chose a starter set to buy now though it would be the Kill team starter or maybe Necromunda.
That was a really good rundown of all the games. Thanks.
But my favorit has to be the Necromunda box. I need a reason to by the vanSaar gang. 🙂
I would not like to win Tooth and Claw, I love Space Wolves, but hate Primaris due to the lore behind them. I think a lot of lore in the new edition is terrible. They should not have moved on from 41st millennium. If I had to choose a starter set from GW to get it would be the Necromunda one, that is one game I’m still kind of interested in from GW.
Necromunda was my first wargame, so will have to give the new one the nod also.
Great show, I loved looking at all the Workshop boxes even if I do have most of them anyway lol
I have no idea which games workshop game is the best.
The best games workshop game at the moment has to be Kill Team or Nercomunda with Blood bowl at close second and it simply the models are so damn nice and the terrain in the sets. The box set I want like if I was to win if I was so lucky, would the the either Kill Team Rogue Trader or Kill Team
I think that now a days Games Workshop products are more approachable as you have a variety of options with different pricing. But to the topic I still wait until I will put off enough money for Warhammer Quest Silvertower or the other one that name I have forgotten 😛
I’ve always thought that Mordheim was pretty good since I’ve always been one of the type to enjoy a game where you can really build a good story for your soldiers.
However, the overall best for has got to be the latest Killteam, since it is incredibly balanced (in my mind) and let’s me live out my fantasies of my Space wolf executioner pack to perform sanction on enemies.
I’d like to drop a special mention to Gorkamorka and Battlefleet Gothic since not only are ship battles really cool, but it allows for a very interesting battle and homebrew rules for ship boarding. Gorkamorka is also the most orky game ever.
