Final Hours Roll In For Mythic’s HEL: The Last Saga Kickstarter

Mythic Games are moving towards the final ten hours or so of their Kickstarter campaign for HEL: The Last Saga. Loads of goodies have been unlocked and tied into the main Berserker Pledge which gives you the core of this narrative game.

HEL: The Last Saga is packed with goodies. As well as all of the miniatures which represent the various characters and monsters that you'll be encountering as you go about your adventures, you'll also find a wealth of lavishly created cards and such which are adorned with wonderful artwork. Plus, you've also got the book which contains all of the narrative elements you'll be reading as you go.

We had a lot of fun with this game and could see it being a really nice narrative experience for those who like their storytelling games and anything with a Viking slant to it!
Add-Ons
You'll note that the image above talks about Add-Ons for the campaign. Well, the team at Mythic Games has presented us with quite a few fun ones.
There are a few elements like the Hnefatafl set and the art book above which give you an insight into the wider world of HEL and also an entirely new game to play. But, you've also got some materials which enhance the gameplay experience in some way too.
You don't need any of these upgrades which is good but they might make things look that little bit fancier as you set up to play. It does seem like HEL: The Last Saga is meant to be quite a lavish experience and you get the sense that it would be all the better with low light, flickering candles, mead and the slow rumble of Nordic music in the background.

In addition to Add-Ons (hah) we also have some Stretch Goals for the campaign.

The Stretch Goals here upgrade existing components like some of the cardboard tokens whilst also throwing in a few alternative sculpts too. I was a big fan of the cardboard tokens and such that they had in the main game to be honest but I can see why people would like playing around with plastic miniatures/pieces for everything. Again, it plays into the idea of this being a lavish experience.

So will backers actually get the 380 tarot size cards or will Mythic replace them like they have in Solomon Kane?

Reading the comments over on BGG…people make excuses for Mythic not delivering on their promises. There is a lot of confirmation bias with KS projects 🙂
That Viking chess set looks interesting.
I agree. So I checked it out- it is an ancient asymmetrical abstract Scandanavian game.
All the pieces move like rooks and capture enemy pieces by flanking them. the goal of the central player is to get his center (king) piece to one of the corners, while his opponent attempts to capture the king.

Yeah. I kind of wish it used a normal chess board (it uses an 11 by 11 board). Still, I think I’ll be able to try it out with stuff that I have.
There are other sets available online, but the ones here looks better than most sets that I’ve seen, and the price ($35) is very fair.
Their model’s a fabulous looking.
I’m just so non interested with the “board game with minis” KS scheme these days (we’re inundated with them), and I think the bubble is about to burst with the in reguard to the hobby (and backers realising just how many of the things they already have (me too) and the fact they’ll never get around to painting them. I think we’re going to see them fragment back into higher quality boardgames (at a cheaper price), and mini based “wargame” KS schemes (that will cost me a bomb). I almost realized that I had too many minis, but then I painted all of the Cthulhu Death May Die minis I have.
Last year, I made minis for everything in Gloomhaven, and some other smaller projects besides, so it turns out that I can keep backing these projects so long as I keep painting at this rate.
Bubble bursting? People are throwing money at CMON despite their auditors putting a warning on their accounts and share trading suspended. People are throwing money at Mythic despite them having outstanding projects to deliver, iffy rules books, and using backers as beta testers.
I don’t see KS bubble bursting. Personally i’m happy to ignore it but it is creeping in to the mainstream games companies.
I agree. From what I’ve read, outside of Kickstarter, retail has turned into a “Churn and Burn” format. Games make the vast majority of their sales in the first two weeks, after which sales drop off hard. With so many great looking games available, the distributors are short on space and only stock things they can move quickly. Retailers can’t always get the games they want in, even if the publisher having a warehouse full of unsold games. Phaidknott is talking about a different bubble, though. Kickstarter has a lot of great games, but it also has a lot of discounted miniatures. The price of buying a mini in the game store is a LOT more than what you pay per mini in a high rattle value Kickstarter. This is a bubble that would pop when minis painters realize that they have too much of a backlog to ever get around to it.
