Happy Weekend!!!
Happy Weekender fellow gamers!
I really enjoyed the Historicon coverage. It was fantastic. Lots of games there that piqued my interest. Thanks for all the hard work!
The ‘Flames Of War Hobby League’ has been a lot of fun to get involved with. I’m glad that OTT is promoting this on the site.
My 40K Weekend Prep is marching forward. Hoping to interact in some way with the folks in the studio when the weekend kicks off for this event.
Happy hobby’n everyone!
Looking forward to seeing your army come to life!
It’s the Weekend!
The prospect of a 40k TV show? Appeals to me as much as a “Love Island STDs under the microscope” show.
Alas, but this does seem like it could be a good choice to get people introduced.
People don’t need introducing to 40K. It’s so pervasive that it has pretty much entered the common vernacular. If the network of GW stores, tie-in games (including Monopoly, of all things), books in mainstream bookshops, and semi-regular partnerships with publisher like Hachette haven’t brought players to the table, a TV show isn’t going to make any difference.
I think you overestimate what the average joe knows. There are plenty of people who could be into a show like this who have never heard of 40K before.
Geeks who are into SciFi wargames that aren’t Star Wars need no introduction to 40k as a setting.
Everyone else does.
Heck … I know what 40k is, but I hadn’t even heard about this Eisenhorn character until this was announced.
I’m pretty sure there’s plenty of people like me out there.
I’d never heard of him
Funny thing is I’ve had conversations with random non-gamers who knew what 40K was. Not to the degree that they could name teh Chaos Gods or anything, but enough to know that its a tabletop wargame sold by Games Workshop. And they haven’t been isolated cases. If these people had any interest in learning more they knew to go to a Games Workshop store (as was). A TV show wouldn’t make any difference to them.
A tv show might be the one thing that triggers them to go visit though.
It all depends on how good the show is and if GW is smart enough to create some sort of link with their games. Maybe a killteam with IronHorn as the commander ?
This could see me doing another visit in October for the Korea open days hehe
@warzan will OTT be stocking any Korea Bolt Action and if so from when?
Yes mate, Korea will be our first steps towards fully supporting Bolt Action as one of our ‘Core Pillars’. We Hope to have the products start going up on the store for today.
We will have all the Korea specific products and we have worked with Charlie at Warlord to also have a range of the late war products that work well for Korea. 🙂
@warzan great to hear buddy, be good to also get a little bit of guidance if possible on what to buy and what will be good to grab for the weekend event in October
Watching The Weekender on the train – going to Berlin Con 2019 – Today is the first full day of this mainly boardgame and card game Convention. Looking forward to playing Demos and Wingspan, Legends of Andor, King of Tokyo and Netrunner…
Sounds brilliant. Woild be great to see pictures of it in the forums!
@brennon Though I did not take any useful photos at the Berlin Brettspiel Con 2019 on Saturday (Brettspiel = Boardgame, by the way), I thought I could send you some impressions of the day.
This was the 6th year of this convention, which has grown dramatically over the last few years:
– in 2016 it was in what was basically two or three large rooms, hidden away in a courtyard behind some office buildings, very fan-based and organized (by the YouTubers “Hunter und Cron”)
– in 2017 and 2018 it moved to a much larger location near the center of Berlin in a converted warehouse, spread over 4 floors with many game publishers showcasing their boardgames, as well as tournaments, a very popular bring-and-buy-“flea market”
– in 2019 it moved into the much larger trade show complex next door and doubled in size, with at least 70 board game publishers in the main hall, as well as panel/podium events, prototype demo, community meeting and open-play areas in two adjacent halls… and entry to the “RatCon” RPG convention in another hall thrown in for free!
Despite the hot summer weather we had in the Berlin over the weekend, I heard that attendances over the weekend were around 10000 tickets – I saw many people with the 2-day/2-evening passes on their lanyards.
Here’s a link to a YouTube blogger which shows the size of the various exhibition halls:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i4STMI-xCwk
(Yes, I know “Spiel doch mall…!” is presented all in German, Julia and Stephan do an excellent job of showing the size and scope of the convention)
For me personally, I had a great day checking out all the various boardgames and card games (this was not a miniature and/or wargaming convention – apart from a demo table with Joan of Arc – beautiful graphic design, though I wish the miniatures had been 28mm).
I very much enjoyed a lengthly demo at the Kosmos gaming area of their Legends of Andor board game. I sold my unplayed copy of 51st State in the very overcrowded “bring-and-buy-fleamarket” and donated two unplayed games to the Hunter and Cron gaming library, and the highlight was…
… having a fascinating conversation with Elisabeth Hargrave (designer of Wingspan / “Flügelschlag”) at the Feuerland stand (Feuerland are the German publishers of Stonemaier Games). Elisabeth Hargrave had just won the Berlin Con Best Newcomer Designer Award on Friday evening – and is also nominated for the Kenner Spiel des Jahres Award – to be announced tomorrow (Monday, 22 July). She said her next game is to be published next year and has another natural history theme: butterflies migrating from Mexico to Canada.
So, all in all, a great day of boardgaming. Next year Berlin Con is scheduled for 17th to 19th July 2020 – the dates are already in the diary!
And finally, since you asked: Ravenclaw.
@brennon @cassn Just read in the news: Wingspan / “Flügelschlag” is the winner of the 2019 “Kennerspiel des Jahres” award (the “Experienced Gamer’s Game of the Year” award). Congratulations to Elizabeth Hargrave, Feuerland Spiele and Jamey Stegmaier at Stonemaier Games!
Happy weekend folks, I’ve been looking forward to watching. Thanks.
OTT Bolt Action Korea event?!?
I just got to make it possible to come!!! ❤️❤️❤️
A good excuse for me to blast my girlfriend’s BTS albums to echo the DMZ atmosphere
I do love those Baron Wars figures. I did have an unread book on the Magna Carta, but can’t find it. Fairly typical, buy a book, don’t read it, sits on the shelf for years, but when you want it, can’t find it.
Always the case…happens with rulebook for me
Magical Kitties game, finally something to complete the crazy cat ladies wish list??
Something to get everyone involved!
Don’t forget men can be crazy cat ladies too ?
Happy weekend!!!
Really looking forward to the Korean theatre campaigns and organised support from Warlord. Also looking forward to the Flames of war stuff too.
Kudos to the video subtexts XD
I’m a proud Ravenclaw
What’s more dangerous than a cat? A on that can fly? If they ever develop opposable thumbs we’re doomed! When they can operate the can opener all will be lost!
Also, cats are proof that the world isn’t flat. If it were, cat’s would have pushed everything over the edge by now.
Things to do this morning, place an order for Warcry goodness and check out the slow grow league for FOW. Happy hobby weekend everyone.
Great episode. A couple of weeks must have gone by because GW produced yet another skirmish game! I really like the look of some of the factions of Warcry, it’s just that I’m just getting rule fatigue from learning so many skirmish game rule sets. Shadeshire, Killteam, Necromunda, AoS Skirmish, Path to glory and all the pervious versions etc there of. I can only hope they come with Killteam style data sheet/cards so you can use a gang in an AoS Chaos army.
I really hope they don’t bollock-up Eisenhorn. He’s a personal favourite from the 40K universe
The Conan Savage Legends 3D renders look fantastic. I hope if only for the sake of the miniatures that this project funds.
Happy Weekend one and all.
As far as Harry Potter goes,i would choose House Gryffindor.I am excited to hear about the Eisenhorn movie, but i’m concerned it will either get stuck in development hell or it’ll get made and they’ll lose all the grimdark stuff that helps make that trilogy great. The Arnie renders are great, but they are not an SG,they are a $40 add-on,just so people are aware before they go looking to back it.I have backed it myself, but i’m a little concerned it won’t make the £64k ( or thereabouts ) funding target, which would be a shame ( imho ).
cool stuff
i do love organised play, particularly an interesting subject such as korea
Witcher Series (trailer available on YouTube) > 40K Show
A big fan of the books, the comics and then the VGs. IMHO, the Netflix Witcher Series will be more popular and to a larger audience.
That is not to say I will not be watching the 40K shows too
In regards to Conan: Savage Legends
1) No released rules
2) No game play videos
3) No public game play testing
4) A first time KS developer
This is why it has not funded.
Korea open days you say?
Korea for Bolt Action, very interesting. Hope they´ll do a plastic set for winter Americans. I also hope the winners will get the special miniature.
What people say about the probable availability of Warcry, I agree that thanks to the terrain in the box it will sell tremendously well. I hesitated for Kill Team just a bit too long, and … gone.
I was really glad to see you guys go and cover Historicon this year. I was hoping to make it myself but due to things popping up I didn’t. Have you guys considered covering it again next year? I really like what Warlord is doing with their organized play.
Wow what a great show. Very happy to say hello at Historicon. Next year you need to give yourself time to visit Gettysburg which is only an hour away from Lancaster.
You know portions are big when someone like Gerry has to order a ‘small’ one.
I think that I will have to go for the kiddy portion if I ever am allowed into the USA (I surely must be on a watchlist of some sort, right ?) … 😀
I ordered the small and couldn’t finish it
oh glorius Weekender
Love Warlord showing up. Bolt Action is my favorite wargame by far!
nice one guys the dwarfs do look great in the kickstarter.
I wonder how quickly the Warcry will sell out. For me GW are just pushing too many limited release boxes.
Or they’re simply underestimating the potential of their starter sets … 🙂
True but I’ve also heard hearsay that they have a long lead up process to release. The boxes we are getting now are those that were designed and tooled up for at the factories 12 to 18 months ago. They simply have to estimate the potential sales very far in advance
yep … and estimates are really tricky when you’re doing a new product.
Killteam had the advantage of at least there having been a version (in the distant past and the shadow war thing).
However I’m not too worried about the startset selling out, because it’s the rules + two teams + tokens. All of which appear to be available on their own anyway. The starterset is more a convenience item if you happen to like the default forces. And if they follow the Killteam pattern of release then I expect there to be a new starterset in the near future that might add a new environment.
The best thing though is that we’re getting the non Chaos unit cards at release, so we may not only have to buy the rules + the cheapish card set for our existing AoS army.
Ok, I’m checking flight times, when did you say the tickets for October are going to be available?
Korea
Got to see if I can make the finances work to get to the Korea weekend.
Warlord organised play, medals for playing fluffy games I think I need to call a meeting at the club we have something that needs to be discussed 🙂
Happy weekend!
Could Warren please talk more about Bob Lazar on XLBS fascinating stuff .
So, knowing GW, how much am I going have to shell out to watch Eisenhorn?
First episode like a start collecting box will be a bargin with prices increasing due to importance. The last episode being half the length and twice the price
They’ll probably remake the series every few years with some slight modification to the script
So we’re waiting for saga baron wars then…
Mt nature pessimism comes to fore for the Eisenhorn series in that it’s a rocky road to getting commissioned and even rockier one to actually being good (hello Dan Abnett penned Ultramarines)!
That said, the books are definitely the place to start in the lore for a 40K TV series and if they get it right, it could be absolutely amazing.
I love those Barons’ Wars minis. I’m definitely not starting a new period either 🙂
Warlord doing organized play, time to pitch the idea of carrying Bolt Action at my local game store again.
Those fantasy Dwarf lords look amazing. I really could see them in my armies as Lords and heroes or unit champions.
Eisenhorn series looks interesting. I’m not a fan of WH40K the game but I’m a fan of the fluff/lore for the game. It’s one of the most detailed I know of.
Another great show, the organized play for Bolt Action looks great. I hope it catches on in my area.
btw : I gots my goodies for the 40K digital visitor on saturday.
I think they were using jet powered pigeons for this one.
The candy was yummy and the t-shirt is the perfect size 😀
Almost can’t wait to get started 😀
Anyone else got theirs yet ?
Warlord’s organized play sounds really intriguing. Being able to have both historical and competitive play sounds great. I’m looking forward to it.
I’d preferred if GW had partnered to do an animated series instead of a live action. Would’ve been able to use the voice actors from the audio books and kept production costs down which may be critical as this is a fairly niche IP.
Decided to watch this week’s show on the new TV as it has YouTube built in…
Great seeing you guys! Looking forward to next year!
Hi all,
Love the new ways to play Bolt Action from Warlord. I also am intrigued by the Korean Bolt Action rules and new miniatures. What a great way to get some Soviet/U.S. action on the tabletop instead of a what if WWII scenario. I look forward to the new tanks and to see how the U.S equipment holds up against the Soviet weapons. Have a great weekend all!
I’ve been eyeing off the Warcry box for the terrain so I’ll have to see how far the wallet will stretch.
Korea book is tempting.
More Bolt Action to paint, oh goodie.
Looks like I’m on notice: find the Eisenhorn omnibus in the cupboard and read it before they make the TV version!
great job
Well done to Warlord for setting the pace
