Positive Discussion Topics
In the forums we've had some positive discussion so we thought we'd highlight it and the most recent topic looking at Miniature Painting & Sculpting as art.
We love seeing what you guys discuss to keep at it and be positive as you're chatting away.
Talisman: The Horus Heresy Review
Justin also got to sit down with the folks from Nomad Games and discussed their version of Talisman focused on the Horus Heresy.
You can check out the Horus Heresy Manual and then get started with the game. Remember there is a prize to be won!
Kickstarter
Last but not least we're looking at the HUGE Kickstarter from CoolMiniOrNot that has taken the funding platform by storm once again, Massive Darkness.
Does this sound like the kind of dungeon crawler that you'd be interested in taking to the table?

Happy weekend all. Watched Quelle Affair last night, epic game!
Happy Sautrday
Happy Saturday.
I have looked at Massive Darkness on kickstarter and the game looks a little mob monster happy. Not got a lot of experience with dungeon crawlers so I’m not sure if this is just the way it goes.
Happy Weekend!
It’s the Weekend! … and time to do some hobby … hopefully… once I’ve cut the grass, fixed the shower pump, taxied the offspring about,… Maybe not that much time!
Given the mention of the new Myth game… I’ll bite my tongue… but will advise anyone considering backing anything from MegaCon games to do their research and some due diligence (plenty of forums, KS comments etc.) on their recent ‘performance’ as a company before investing/pledging.
@coxjul, yeah. Megacon made some poor decisions with MERCS production, which is their “flagship” game. Dented, scratched and splitting boards delivered in the game box that warp when you unpack them as they were not properly dried. The minis are, at best, on par with the old restic minis from Mantic. At their worst, they are miscast blobs. Megacon is offering replacements on some parts, but it requires a lot of documentation on the user’s side followed up with an authorization on Megacon’s part. I offered just to drive over with my copies, but they asked that we not come by physically, only dealing with us via email.
You could feel the bonny part in you @warzan… Phrasing.
From the early days of Dungeons & Dragons, one of my favorite series of adventures was the G1, G2, G3 against the Giants. Storm King’s Thunder sounds like much more of a role playing adventure and less of a dungeon crawl with the politics of the Giants playing a large role in the campaign.
Great episode I remember watching a documentary where a historian looked at mythalogical creatures and realised that the supposed sites of the mythical creatures were actually the same places archeologists had found fossils. Her theory was that people reconstructed the skeletons of dinosaurs and things like mamoths incorrectly and rather than building them as the giant walking lizards which ruled our planet (how insane does that sound yet we all believe it) they figured tey must be the remains of creatures from mythology. Her theory is that ancients found a mamoth skeleton and decided that the large opening where the trunk used to be was an eye hole hence cyclops. If I can find it I’ll post it on here
Happy Weekend!
Many tempting games. I hope the upcoming Reaper Bones III giants are popular with the new D&D supplement.

Wandering into my ‘day job’ territory here again. There’s only two references to Nephilim in the Hebrew Bible (pronounced n’fileem’ and meaning ‘the fallen ones’). Genesis just says the Nephilim were around in those days when the sons of God took the daughters of men and bred a race of mighty warriors. The other is in Numbers when Moses sends spies into Canaan and fearing that the Canaanites are too strong for them to conquer, they say that they saw the Nephilim there, who they seemed like grasshoppers in comparison to.
It was much later that the Genesis passage is greatly expanded on as apocalyptic ideas began to take root in Judaism leading to a search to find the point at which evil entered the cosmos. It would ultimately settle in Christianity on Genesis 2-3 and the identification of the Serpent with Satan, but before that Genesis 6 became a very fertile ground for stories of fallen angels. The Book of the Watchers in 1 Enoch is probably the most important text here. This is in turn became an important text for modern alternative history writers to claim the Nephilim were real.
The other, and more famous, giant in the Hebrew Bible was Goliath. His height isn’t given but later texts tend to put him at the height of an NBA player.
You officially have the coolest day job ever!
Need you on show speed dial for when we wander into this stuff lol
Well, unless his day job is Rabbi or Priest.
What would be wrong with having a priest or a rabbi on?
I’ve just realised how un-PC my post looked. I just meant about the “coolest job” thing, I’m sure Rabbis and Priests love their work, are very knowledgeable about religious texts but I don’t think it’s a “cool job”
Regarding Massive Darkness, I’ve watched several CMON kickstarters over the last couple of years and been really tempted to bite. In hindsight I really regret not backing Zombicide: The Black Plague, so I got a bit excited by the prospect of a dungeon crawler based on Zombicide rules and finally pledged.
However, in the last 24 hours it’s all gone bit sour. This Kickstarter feels badly done compared with previous CMON efforts. Their last one, Rum &Bones 2, had actual physical sculpts with professional paint jobs to show of, but MD only has 3D renders. R&B2 offered addons that added whole new factions and gameplay options, but MD’s only addon so far has offered 4 quite poorly (imho) monsters that would rarely get used anyway at a price that has unleashed a wave of negativity all over the kickstarter’s comments section.
In a game where you’re fighting hoards of goblins and orcs most of the time, there has been no mention so far of alternate sculpts or new foes on this level. Instead they’re just trying to wow us with large beasties. A few new heroes have been offered as stretch goals, but one character was basically split so that its mini was one sg and its actual rules as another 🙁
If I’m moaning it’s because CMON has run amazing looking kickstarters in the past, but this one looks very poor in comparison. Massive Darkness is turning into a massive disappointment and you can feel the negativity all over the comments. I’ll be sticking with it for now, but if things don’t improve soon, I’ll be pulling my pledge and perhaps using the money to buy Z:BP at retail instead.
I have been looking at this the whole time and thinking you know getting not one but two may not be a bad idea. Those minis maybe desired by many or there are just some where I would like to have two.
But yeah this looks massive and there is a good chance it will overshadow the silver tower, this year. (I wonder if anyone else gets that…)
Anyway I couldn’t be more on with you with this one.
On the Massive Darkness art direction, the man mainly responsible is Edouard Guiton. I’ve gone on in the past about how as an industry, we don’t give sculptors the respect that they deserve, and the same holds true for artists too. Edouard was a major force behind the look of Confrontation, and has since worked on the likes of Krosmaster, Asylum, Wrath of Kings, Zombicide, and now Massive Darkness.
http://edouardguiton.com/
I was really worried about Massive Darkness; I had sworn off any more Kickstarters and I thought this one would be too much to resist. However, after watching the gameplay video I think it will be really easy to avoid this one no matter how big it gets.
3 am in Chicago and loving me some Weekender!!!
…and I will be attending the Hoth event next weekend!! DaxStar games is a great group of people and is only 20 minutes from my door! Also, love the napoleonic game yesterday!!!
Happy weekend
Giants are of course classic D&D monsters. But they’re not all that compelling in themselves, the adventure will need to have a good plot to make it interesting.
That’s the case with all D&D. You can’t make it interesting just by selecting monsters from the book. It’s the story those monsters appear in that make the game interesting.
Happy weekend
Hello all,
Guilty as charged the sunday politics show is another mad cap idea from my key board along with some major support from Victoria who has posed this Sundays topic, sorry you do not get to know until the 10:00 am start. The piece is actually under the heading of “The Thin White Line” As said it runs from 10:00hrs on sunday GMT to 22:00hrs on the Monday. One of the reasons for keeping it short was for it to remain some what punchy a little like it’s topics I hope. That does give a running total of 36 hrs which does cover one and half rotations and so all time zones.
And what is more if you want to run a topic the next three weekends are booked but, as I will be doing the third I can easily move over for someone else. Just PM me and I will get back to you hence why I hopefully have the next few booked to give me time to sort and give a date for your topic. If I think it is a little too aggressive or just a company spanking in its nature, it will not got the air time on our little experiment. If I am in any doubt I shall be asking Warren and he will have the last on it.
So if you want to play nice, if you have something that is bugging you and you want to know what other peoples opinion is of that topic and are willing to not agree but not argue then this is the place for you.
Thanks, I look forwards to hearing from you and I hope you like this weekends topic about?????
See you there 10 am Sunday and you will have a point at some time where you can enter an answer or comment if you want up to 10 pm on the Monday.
Chris G
Excellent stuff
Looking forward to it 🙂
Happy weekend … don’t let the weather bring you down.
How come you didnt mention the Irish Giants?
My total apologies go out to ONLYONEPINMAN who has been there from the start and has been a massive boost to this. So yes I meant that shouting capitols, he deserves some credit, sorry just wanted to get it out that we need your own questions as well to keep this going. Only one subject per programme. We also have a couple of rules that we are thinking of introducing as well but we will state these clearly tomorrow at 10 AM on “The thin white line…”
Chris G
Lol, don’t worry Chris, I’m not in it for the glory! I just think it’s a great idea and really happy you asked me to help last Sunday!
So which primarch would you be? Lion ‘El Jonson!! Follow up and let the guys know what primarch would be for you on Talisman Horus Heresy…
None of course I could only be the Emperor, no a servitor, no the Emperor, no a servitor! Damned my Bi-polar. LOL.
Nethalium are the offspring of angels and human women. That’s where Goliath, David’s opponent came from.
That’s a later extrapolation of Genesis 6. See my comment above 🙂
My apologies.it is not Nethalium was supposed to be Nephilim.
Whilst sat up in bed enjoying a coffee and watching the Weekender, Warren mentioned that Justin and Ben were in Stockport for Lock & Load. 40 minutes later I’m there myself. What a great event. If you can’t make it in person then certainly watch the live blogs. There’s a lot going on and tomorrow breaking with mkIII should be epic.
I’d love to win the Horus Heresy Steam Keys.
yeah where is fin mcoul (no idea how to spell that).my nan told me the story of when the irish giant saw that the scotish giant was bigger than he was he dressed as a baby. so the scotish giant on seeing how big the irish giant babies were headed home double quick.
Great episode, guys!
Justin! Be careful combining your Mammoth herding duties with that of a Cherub, multi-classing can cause unforeseen issues!
That Massive Darkness KS looks fantastic
This Heresy Talisman game is looking good! I’m well into my 30k at the moment, it feels loads less confusing, complicated and less stressful than the current incarnation of standard 40k to me!
Always fancied giving the HH Talisman a pop but too poor just now (Curse you forgeworld!)
Horus Hersey: Talisman !
as a backer of the movie I am very concerned that they are doing another Kickstarter. This is the second project that I have backed that has asked for a second round and the other still hasn’t shipped. I can’t remember which weekender or XLBS it was in that @warzan talks about the issues that Kickstarters have and the signs that they are nearing a complete failure. One of those issues is coming back and asking for more money via a new round of funding.
In their defense they didn’t ask for that much money to get the movie started and it does look like they have gotten a lot done with that money. I do hope that they finish up this movie and it shows the artistry and inventiveness of this industry.
Great show as always .
Good show, The visual of Cherub One was hilarious! Massive Darkness does look pretty good. The history of the world according to Warren was very entertaining as usual.
Good stuff!
The wargaming movie is the kickstarter I am most excited that I backed. I am extremely excited to get my hands on it soon!
I’m heading out to Bali, Indonesia today for our 41st anniversary. I’ll try to catch BoW while I’m gone!
So…I can’t help myself but to smile when @warzan tells us he loved having a little French man in him.
What are those biscuits by the way? Never heard of them before.
Need to get my hands on the 2nd edition of wolsung.
Sorry I missed the art discussion. Mini painting and sculpting IS art. Regardless of it’s purpose. Sculpture (without painting) IS art… if it’s made to be painted, that is also art, just as a comic book is art. Pencils, inkers, colorers…all artists.
MD looks interesting, i am still deciding if i want to back it or not. I am not overly impressed with the minis (other than the heroes and a few SGs).
happy weekender, wow quelle affair is really a true gaming affair.
Finally get s chance to watch this, can’t wait for the XLBS tomorrow as well.
Enjoyed looking at the 2 digital talisman games at UKGE, so do i prefer Fantasy or Sci fi? hmm I like both
Happy weekend! Thanks for giving us a chance to win!!
a great & interesting show guys.
As a backer of the original kickstarter for the Wargames movie, I’m interested to know what this new one is about. If they ran out of money and need more, that’s not necessarily a problem – as long as they’re open about it. I just hope that do make clear what’s going on sooner rather than later.
Interesting that Rick Priestly appeared to be saying that most people at GW weren’t bothered about the LotR license apart from him and a few others.
They claim to be on track then admit that they need money for personnel and final filming. So they aren’t on track but if they get the money then they will be. I think they bit off more than they could chew in one big bite and needed to have a bit more of an understanding of the way the program will work. As a positive I do think what they have done looks great and I hope that this gets more money in and they are able to put together a professional looking crew to finish this one off and then get onto the next project. The film industry is not an easy one and it chews up a lot of great artists.
Thanks for the show guys!
Interesting intro btw, i will check into it.
Massive Darkness: if my friend did not backed this, i would have (no sense into having 2 in a gaming group, altough the minis are tempting to paint!) (but i still have so many left to paint)!
See you tomorow
Goliaths are in 5th Edition proper, they were in the pdf for Elemental Evil
Great Show as always fellas!!
@warzan, Mrs Recon63 says well done on your self restraint regarding the bikkies. and you have her permission to tell Lloyd & John to stop being horrible little gutsies. She insinuated that they both deserve a smack on the hand on camera!! (She’s not well at the moment, with Kidney stones, so she is slightly more irritable than normal).
In regards to the tins, every year the main supermarkets over here (Woolworths, Coles, and now Aldi), as well as the post office on occasions have been putting out the tins as a way of helping raise money the the RSL’s (Returned Servicemens League)
http://rsl.org.au/About-Us
It’s one of the many organizations that try to help returned servicemen & women and their families.
I believe the idea behind the tins, was the upcoming Anzac Centinary (25th April 2015, the Gallipolli Landings), as well as a commemorative way of acknowledging certain major engagements/battles that Australia has fought in, that Australians believe have been pivotal in our growth as a Nation.
@dignity, (uses Megatron’s voice to Starscream) You’ve Failed Again!!
1st you did not manage the simple task of hiding the biscuits from the BoW.,
2nd you LOST Waterloo! Your pennace, YOU must listen to ABBA Waterloo for 1HOUR!!
(great battle though guys!)
Completely agree on the “positive discussion” threads. Very good read. Just haven’t had anything to say yet.
Nice selection of weekend banter guys. I like it when the show bounces around between such a variety of topics.
Horus Heresy Talisman – only ever played “classic” talisman (a very long time ago, though thankfully in a mates house not a galaxy far far away) so I’d like to have a go with this new version.
Great show guys!
I’m really looking forward to the Wargaming Movie KS! I will definitely have to pledge for it and get it on Blu-ray if it’ll be one of the pledges.
Btw – can you use one of those voting polls for competitions again? I don’t want the prize because I don’t have anything good enough to run the game on (damn it!), and I thought the competition-poll-thing you did last time was a great idea, so as to avoid having to trawl through the comments for prize entries or eliminating people who mention they don’t want the prize. So having that would mean I don’t have to write this drivel. Yeah! 😀
That was one giant lesson!
Excellent show.
Love the idea of playing a Primach.
Always enjoy the weekenders. Loved the giant talk by Warren. Chariots of the gods baby!!!
If they want to play hex and counter games I’d love to see Mark Walker on the show.
I love to see more cover on Wolsung!
Primarch choice has to be Rogal Dorn – only the best will suffice 🙂
Really enjoyed learning more about the various giants since I don’t play much role playing games and it would be nice to get into it a bit more in the future.
My vote goes for Corvus Corax 🙂 As for the news in the Weekender I am so happy to see Wolsung 2ed out!
Watching the show in bits. Just cant find the time to sit and watch it all in one. Enjoying it so far though!
I have the Talisman game on Steam. It would be great to win a key for the Horus Heresy version.
I had no idea this was coming out, but I love the idea.
Loved the D&D giant overview; brought back many memories. Talisman also sounds interesting will take a closer look.
Goto love the weekender show – super awesomeness – keep it going guys -)
Horus Heresy! Yes Please 😉
That game looks awesome, love dungeon crawlers!
Good show!
Awesome show! 😀
Hello again my friends and family and happy belated weekend, sorry for being so late but I’ve been down on my health again and had to be sent to the hospital for a while but I’m back.
Love the new episode, I’m very curious about the Horus Heresy thing in steam and how is it really going to work.
Hmmmm, I play anything with the Horus Heresy brand name on it and I don’t see this being any different.
Great show, got my humors up like always.
Cheers
Raf
I hope Talisman: Horus Heresy works better that the vanilla one…
The weekender, good any time of the week!
awesome news!!!!
I picked up 4 of the munitorium containers already…I head a scary rumor that they are no longer available.
think massive darkness will go nicely with my black plague
I have not yet tried the 40k talisman but it looks fun
Happy weekend, for the Emperor!
Great show guys, I love the talk about giants. Even though, the more I look at the fire giant, I feel like playing Legend of Zeld ( it reminds me of Ganadorf ).
Like Benn, I really like the mini Treeman. Looking forward to more adventures in DS
Here’s to Horus!
Sign me up for the goodness!
Yay!!!
Hail the Emperor
Count me in for the Horus stuff!! Great show
played the old and new fantasy Talisman a few times, and like the look of the new game.
a steam key would be great, nice prizes guys
Happy Horus Ends, or is Week Heresy?
Cheers
Looks good!
Great Weekender – even if I’m watching it nearly a week late!
Hmm, interesting alternate version of talisman
Love talisman and relic… can’the wait for a new twist
Fingers crossed
The Cyclops put me in mind of the old Sinbad film, with the Dragon, Skeleton and mad Wizard, all courtesy of Ray Harryhausen.
Loved the nap game guys. Very entertaining.
every female on Earth? This would include a Praying Mantice. I hope there is a female out there more lovely than that. I agree with you comment for females of our species.
