Happy Sunday!!
Happy Sunday – in a weeks time we will be done with Salute
Captain Boomerang is a villain… and he was created in 1960 as we’re most of the DC characters (if not earlier) hence the corny names. Gambit was created in 1990.
The AT-AT if I am not mistaken were added to Endor in the remastered version only ….
The AT-AT was always there. It was the vehicle that delivered Luke to Vader at the landing platform.
Been so long since I saw the original
I find Justin’a lack of Star Wars knowledge disturbing.
Happy Sunday!
Happy Sunday and Balls! to you all!
can you guys go get news on Droop fleet Salute, for this poor soul that 1st time back any ks ?
we did a major interview with Dave from Hawk a few weeks back here’s the link:
http://www.beastsofwar.com/dropfleet/dropfleet-commander-massive-kickstarter-update/
was hopping for new stuff 😀 will they be there ?
Happy sunday
happy sunday! I will take pictureca, Gir will bring monster boss. Should I bring neuroshima Convoy 2.0?
Re molding sails for the Blood and Plunder ships, try soaking some cloth in 50/50 pva and stick it to an inflated balloon. Once dry pop the balloon and cut the sails to shape. For the front sail keep partially inflate a balloon to give the sail a more rounded shape.
Great idea @needlesbeckett – That’s simple but (if it works), really clever!
Excellent XLBS guys, especially Justin’s ‘cracking up episode’. I like the ‘project tray on shelves’ solution for storage and will probably adopt that method myself, once I work out where to put my current ‘project mountain’ temporarily until this is in place! Considering Salute is just next week, this may well be a tad problematic! Hope to see and enjoy meeting as many BoW crew and supporters next Saturday, I will be wearing my TableTopBattle patrons T’shirt and accompanied by a mad Irishman probably wearing his kilt! (ask Warren about that one, he’s probably still traumatized by the ‘kiss’!!!) TTFN Brian ; )
Morning chaps.
Is it wrong that possibly the thing I’m (so far) most excited about with Rogue One is the fact it loos like we might get our first “official” Imperial Grand Admiral?
Still gutted I didn’t go in more on HINT. Put in a minimal pledge as I thought they’d have a pledge manager I could add to later but never got an invite 🙁
It is a VERY Appleseed/Ghost in the Shell range though. Personally though I’d recommend the manga over the various anime versions. Despite looking absolutely fantastic none of them quite match what the books do (and yes, I rate it higher than Masamumne Shirow’s other work, including GITS).
Hi I am in for hint too there was a pledge manager as I added some more exo suits this was about 4-6 weeks ago
Yeah, just took a look at the campaign page and down in the FAQ’s it notes the PM would only be available for backers at a level with actual rewards. Ah well, live & learn. Least most of the range should be available at retail eventually, and for metal at not unreasonable prices 🙂
We have moved recently as well and dedicated the second bedroom to the hobby. We have fitted shelves into the fitted wardrobe which contains many really useful boxes. There is a 6 x 4 table rather than a bed. Perfect hobby cave.
I built a pirate ship and for the sails I used a former/template and used pva soaked tissue paper (doubled up for extra strength)

@lloyd i made a very cheap paint rack from some 35mm upvc right angle cladding, was £3.50 per 3m length, just attach to wall with no more nails. The advantage i find with it (as i have limited space) is that you cut it to length, and rather than have all your paints out as you will only use a small subset of your paint collection on any given project, Have also got some brilliant tubs from B+Q which have 3 layers of divider drawers in side a really useful box, they are stackable and the trays just lift out. As for hand tool storage cant really beat a small tool box, or as justin said magentic strip on wall, although as i had to kid proof my space lockable boxes won out over convenience
Forgot i had posted a pic before of my setup
The shelf above the paints is a DVD rack turned on its side, saved me a load of hassle
A) taking it to the tip,
B) building something suitable
The paint racks look great. How much no more nails did you use? A long strip of it or a set of blobs along its length?
@lloyd i just put thin bead down the length of it, as its a flat on flat surface you get a really nice thin layer by just pressing it to the wall so it bonds really well. Having used them for 6 months or so now the only thing i would change is adding some squares to the end to stop things falling off (literally a 35mm square of plasticard is all thats needed). Initially i thought i would be adding the same amount again as i could only fit a 1/3rd of my paints on it, but now im really happy only having out what im using plus a few goto get out of jail free things like model mates, i find it less distracting to not be bewildered by the range of shades i have when i know what my core army colours are…
Justin sounds like the girlfriend I don’t have, don’t spend all your money on new toys and don’t blow all your load in one go!
OMG can you guys at least do some research on the Knight models minis backgrounds before you take about them.
Deadshot (Batman Villian) and Captain Boomerang (Flash Villain) and both are part of the suicide squad.
Professor Zoom aka Eobard Thawn (Flash Villain).
All of these characters have turned up on Arrow and Flash TV series.
Admittedly I’m not an aficionado of either DC or Marvel, but I find these shows way more entertaining when they’re just making random observations about these ridiculous sounding characters.
I guess I can see why you find it annoying if you’re really into the background, but for those of us who aren’t, I think the BoW approach is a good way of covering something that needs to be covered because it’s an important development in the hobby world but is also something that risks turning people off if they’re not big comic fans.
And they kind of take this approach to a lot of stuff they cover. I think that’s BoW’s great strength – it’s just some guys exploring the hobby and not pretending to be experts on everything. I think it works very well.
If there’s stuff you want to buy at GenCon, you should definitely not wait around to get it. I plan my conventions something like a military operation. For Salute, I’ll have the floorplan printed out with all the things I want to hit marked on it. For GenCon, AdeptiCon, or Salute, I’ll thoroughly perused the schedule and booked myself into plenty of events. I won’t hit all of them, but I’ll always have the option of doing something.
@justin, Ben is a man after my own heart. if he gets shelves for nothing off free cycle hes got more money for shiny stuff.
My own hobby room featured on the weekender a while ago and most of the basic fabric of the room was free headed for the skip or very cheap indeed from the car boot. i Have bought wardrobes for a fiver then dismantled them purely for the timber they are made from. it might only be laminated chipboard but it can be hidden under battlemats etc or used to make the basic framework.
For me to make a hobby space work its all in the planning for what you want to do in the space. Take a tape measure and mark out on the floor your basic plan with white masking tape then you can actually sit and walk about the space seeing if it works before you are committed to bits of furniture.
walls are just vertical floor plans and again its mark out the space. Best of all is be cheeky and remember that if you dont ask you dont get so practice your haggling skills as well
its also worth while thinking outside the box using magnets and alternate methods of storage for awkward areas
Many Bothans wont die in this film , as they all were kakked getting the Second Death Star plans , not the first.
justins got a table ??????……since the kids left home i been exspanding …..3 rooms in the house now claimed by my hobby lol …..wonder if i got a problem lolololol
What no weekender next week!!!!!! Ok will see you at salute then. Safe journey!
To over come hangovers drink lots of water and take a paracetamol before going to sleep.
My Irish fiancé says hair of the dog works well too.Slan go foile.
I end up being her personal shopper on the day but don’t get paid….the best bit is I can do what I like for the hobby as and when I want as a result.
I simpathise with sharing hobby space like Lloyd but we do get to spend quality time with our better halves.
@lloyd There may be cheaper alternatives out there but I think the paint racks with integrated drawers from http://www.wargame-model-mods.co.uk/ seem pretty good. They even do an L shaped rack with drawers which should provide ample storage for your painting and modelling supplies. If you just want the rack part, however, there are definitely cheaper options out there.
Also if you have need storage for gaming mats, I found a couple of guttering brackets and a few pieces of plastic guttering does the trick as long as you have a wall to fit them to!
@dignity Like good card games that take an hour and a half to play? Why there’s a perfect example sitting on the shelf behind you! It’s not exactly something you can slip in your pocket though!
Great episode gents!
Really looking forward to Salute now and I’ll definitely have to stick to my shopping list this time otherwise I’ll forget to get stuff. So easily giving in to temptation!
On top of my (rather long) list are
Gripping Beast Late Romans
Perry Afghan War British
Warlord Project Z Bikers
Great Escape Games Chicago Way (cops & moonshiners)
I’ve tried the personal shopper thing in shape of one of my daughters but it cost me too much to bribe her..
Spending a whole Saturday in a hot hall full of sweaty nerds twice or three times her age wasn’t her idea of a great day out with dad unfortunately.. 🙁
Happy Sunday! and welcome to the “…and stuff like that” show 🙂
Happy Sunday!
@dignity – fun game after a few beers, Exploding Kittens (especially if you have the NSFW deck)
Hobby space – Hmmm… well I’ve pretty much outgrown my box-room man cave. My wife has suggested I move into the spare bedroom instead (twice the size), but I just know I’d fill that too given the opportunity!
@lloyd – As you have the sloped walls, I would suggest making some bespoke shelves to go on the end walls, the wall next to the trapdoor is pretty much wasted space as you wont be putting any other furniture along there. You could also put some small shelf units along the walls (where your DVDs are)
Happy Sunday!
Watching XLBS, making dinner 🙂
For paint/ desk storage try CNC Workshop?
https://www.miniaturescenery.com/ProductPage.asp?CODE=RKP
Those little Balls remind me of art from the old Fighting Fantasy and Warhammer Fantasy books. Some of that older style John Blanche art. So does the other Kickstarter, Pantheon of Chaos.
Happy Sunday!
As always nice show. For desk check this one http://www.hobbyzone.pl/en/. I use some of their stuff and I am very pleased.
I would like to see if there any more information on new release for either infernal or the edge.
And Captain boomarang is actually a villain

Happy Sunday
Great video, thanks.
In the things to look for at Salute, Anvil just released some new modern image combat troops that are sort of modular. I wouldn’t mind a look at those in the coverage, everything they have done before has been really nice quality stuff.
HINT Looks amazing and I am super excited about receiving it, especially as a Shadowrun player. But, without wanting to sound like I’m correcting people, HINT is unlikely to be with backers until late May/early June – assuming that they do not get any more delays at the factory.
Sorry forgot to “First” this morning, too busy playing Dark Souls, you know how it is :3
Don’t worry Justin size doesn’t matter….
Hey Justin,
As you are getting into the Dark Ages in a big way you should drop by table GF17 and try your hand at Blood Eagle, skirmish wargaming in the legendary Dark Ages.
Cheers,
Craig.
will do if i find the time 🙂
It’s on my list of things to do and buy
So I obviously fall into the group who makes a list before visiting a show. I need to as I constantly go off piste.
For paint racks, I really like this idea
http://privateerpressforums.com/showthread.php?178076-From-the-Gnarls-rise-the-United-Kriel-(A-Troll-Blog)&p=3378288&viewfull=1#post3378288
I have a similar arrangement to Justin. It’s an old GW painting tray. At the moment I have a dicebox (made from an IKEA photo frame) with a bunch of minis sitting in it.
https://goo.gl/photos/VfgKc2vVoDBryttN6
The important part is being able to pop it all back out of the way when the misses wants the living room back.
Need to check Hysterical Games (Booth TH06)
@lloyd Heres a link for the paint racks I use at home, loads of different rack options as well as materials.
http://www.back2base-ix.com/hobby-desk-organisers.html
For Salute, I download the traders and demo games list and the map, and then go through them all and mark what I’m interested in seeing (I’ll also visit their websites to see what they’re about). Then I find their tables on the map and write the names on them and number them in order of importance. For example, if I know there will be exclusive minis or a big queue at one stand, I’ll put them down as number one to visit first.
Then I can make a beeline straight to what I want to get and see and then take it easy and browse around for a while, my backpack full of the main bits I nabbed in the nick of time!
For my first Salute, I went on my own, and still had a good time. I did actually make a friend on the day, and we both went to the FW stand first and chatted a bit, but then parted ways as he found his mate.
The second time I was going to look out for people I’d met from youtube channels there, but completely missed them lol! But I still enjoyed bombing around the whole venue, going on my mission to get all the bits I was excited about getting and then relaxing afterwards.
I made food both times, as was mentioned by Ben, I think; you have to take a break and sit down, eat and sit in awe of what you’ve bought.
Where bringing money is concerned, I’d say decide on a budget and bring cash and a debit card in case you run out of cash – there’s cash machines outside the venue. Really think about what you want and can afford. Think about whether you will use any of the stuff you buy too. I have things I bought two years ago from Salute that I never used. It’s only now that I think that I might use them because I’d got into a new game.
Have a plan, have a contingency plan and play it by ear, lol. But keep asking yourself it what you’re looking at can be bought at another time AFTER your current purchases are built and painted.
One thing I will add as advice for Salute is about travel. I’m in NW London, and it takes about 1 and a half hours travel in total for me to get there. The last thing I want is to be travelling home stuck on a packed tube train at the end of the day, with all the other people who’ve been on a shopping on a Saturday. So I aim to get in early when the doors open and get out about by 1pm or 2pm. I will be knackered after getting up early and travelling and walking around for hours and hours in a circle to see everything (which is nigh-on impossible), so by the time I get home I’ll probably fall asleep after the adrenaline wears off lol.
@lloyd and @dignity Check out the Thunderchild Miniatures and their (it’s actually a one-man-band) game Wasteman! http://www.tcminiatures.co.uk/
It’s a humorous post-nuclear apocalyptic skirmish game with an 80’s horror and sci-fi movie theme to it, with sculpts that are reminiscent of old Citadel miniatures. It’s filled with funny and gribbly mutants, rad-monsters, killer robots, strange heroes, strange vending machines, giants, cyborgs (Cybjorgs as named in the game as created by the Swiss before the nuclear war lol), maw-men and mootant cows. There might be new minis from his new follow up game supplement called Yeoman, which has a bit of a medieval fantasy theme to it, but still in the Wasteman style.
P.S Please stop Justin from screaming. 😀 Please 😛
Try this with the sails. Create a rectangular frame larger than the cloth sail. Attach one edge (that would be the top) to some dowel to stand in for the cross beam and find some way of attaching cord to the other corners back to the frame. Then suspend horizontally above a bowl or similar. You cold then try various solutions/paints or even stained pva and apply it to the cloth. The weight should cause a natural parabolic shape to the sail which when stood upright looks filled with wind.
Re those card/dice boxes. Pledged on a previous project by the same guy (Sam Zhao https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/373390096/wooden-deck-box-for-mtg-magic-pokemon-yugioh-tcg-c/description) which went very well and he delivered on time.
Always looking for nice boxes to keep all kinds of things in so may go for more.
As for Pantheon of Chaos – there’s a big gap out there for some models to make a KoW NightStalker army from – a couple of the models in this range look a good start… why not fit a need?
Happy Sunday! Excellent XLBS. Thanks for the laughs. Safe travels.
Justin, I know you are excitable, but please STOP SHOUTING!! My poor ears… 😛
I’m looking forward to salute, one thing i am trying this year is I have ordered stuff from 4ground to pickup there. So no worries if they have sold the last one (I hope), also i can pick it up before i leave and i dont have to cart it about all day, no personal shopper for me.
If your looking for paint racks i’ve been using these.
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Varnish-Display-Stand-approx-bottles/dp/B007D0QQ6M
I would like to take the credit for the idea but i read it somewhere on the web.
I like the way you guys have broken your own Con rules before you have even got to Salute… Friday night of heavy drinking – hangover at the Con… 🙂
The Bothans thing was for the second Death Star. Bothans are sort of Canine-like humanoids.
SOOOO excited for the new Warhammer Quest!!
I’m not a DC fan (much), but that Zoom pose was super cool. Oh, also Capt. Boomerang is a villain.
Good show guys. Drinking card game looks good
great show, you could try second hand/ charity shops for cheep shelving units?
Hobby stuff all around the house? Did that for at least 2 years in a row, and over 10 in my last place. I found as nice as it is to always *interrupted by “shiny I want that!” followed by Justins laughing explosion* hmmm, to always have your hobby stuff in view, it can start to get old by being constantly surrounded by unfinished projects. Piles of models and unopened kits sadly do not count as display cases. 😛
Display cases, specially lighted ones are great, a must even. Garbage bags full of sprues and stacks of boxes with “where did I put that bit” written on them, causes me to lose sanity points.
I’ll post some images of newer, much more organized hobby space.
Sorry but can Justin please stop screaming and blowing out the mic levels? It is really annoying.
If you’re after cheap paint racks pay a visit to a make up shop. I asked if they had any old nail varnish display stands that they get given by their suppliers. Offer them a fiver or something. I got mine for free.
Planning on going to Salute this year for the first time. Going alone. If you see a big bald bearded guy looking lost, say hi and point me towards cool stuff.
Quick question on that note. For demo games, do I need to go to the stands early and book a demo time or is it just a case of rock up and see if there’s a gap?
Hopefully going to pick up a few infinity bits and have decided I don’t have enough fantasy minis/games so will be looking at Guild ball.
Might even see what is around for Dark Age.
Any other suggestions?
@dean6345 – I also go to Salute on my own, and actually I like it. I do bump into people I know from time to time, but it means I can make the best use of time, stop to chat with interesting people, browse interesting stalls and so on.
My advice is just to be willing to chat with people – other punters but traders and demo-ers too.
As far as I’m aware most games you just show up. If there’s something you’re really desperate to try, then maybe go there early just in case they’re taking ‘bookings’, but I don’t think that’s the way most of the demo games run.
Good idea on the paint racks!
Cheers for the info. I’ll get planning my visit list in priority order. I like the look of Guild ball so may try and get a demo first then show the love at the stall.
Justin i`m with you on the “Marvel” character`s mate, it`s got to be “Groot”.
Firelock Games’ Blood & Plunder Ships, i can`t wait for this KS to start. I`m liking the ship`s, what i am wondering is, will we see level`s called “Frigate” etc after the name of the ship`s, and if so will they come with crew`s. I hoping so, as it`ll mean i can tailor the force`s that interest me……………….
Hobby space used to be a 7ft by 12ft shed at the bottom of the garden, but it`s now just used for storing all the house hold crap that required storing. But that`s about to change back to my man cave, i just need to take some time of work this year and clam it back. Once i get it sorted i`ll post pic`s for you guy`s to see it in all it`s glory………………..
For the KS, it`s got to be Pantheon Of Chaos for me. I like that someone has gone back to the old school look of “Chaos”, i do have some of the old stuff including the plastic chaos warrior`s and the “Demon Prince” from back in the day. Think i`ll have to dig them out and start to post some pic`s of what old stuff i still have around………………
Great show Justin, Lloyd and Ben.
Captain Boomerang is one of Flash “Rogue Gallery” and Captain Boomerang is not DC version of Gambit, Captain Boomerang is more dangerous he doesn’t miss because they comeback
There is also the strategy at the longer conventions that attract vendors from across the nation/world: get your must haves, then wait until the last day. A lot of the vendors will discount greatly their product so as not to have to ship/carry it home. Reaper at Adepticon even had glass display cases purchased from the local IKEA for their painted miniatures and gave them away on Sunday (my buddy got 2) if you had a vehicle to cart them away just so they wouldn’t have to ship them back to Texas. Ooh, there’s your storage solution and it’d even satisfy the dwarf in Ben.
Regarding the Mon Mothma (Rebel Leader) casting in rogue one: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0642444/?ref_=tt_cl_t11 she already played Mon Mothma in 2005 Revenge of the SIth!
One reason why I love Groot is because, in The comic Jean Grey connects to his mind and it is this beautiful elaborate monologue by Groot to Jean about how Groot admires humanity.
That was an awesomely delightful XLBS. I was laughing all of the way through with the somewhat random banter and (un)intended jokes.
The back and forth seems so much more relaxed (dare I say present) when Warren is not hogging the screen. Sorry @warzan , but it’s the thruth.
That’s the best Captain Boomerang sound effect I’ve ever heard. But the shiny guy scares me. Don’t ever let him come out again.
@lloyd The most notable omission in your hobby space looks to be a window. I prefer to build and paint my mini’s in daylight. No amount of artificial lighting can replace that.
Other than that I’m in the Justin camp. I live alone and my home is half living space, half workshop. I do have a few MDF boards lying around to easily move projects about. But it does happen that a project just sits on the dining table for more than a week.
Hey @bucketknight, it has a velux window but I can’t put the desk directly under it as it would block space to some roof space storage hatches. Which is a shame as it provides great light.
How about a desk on wheels or a fold-out desk? You can place it near the window when working and move it out of the way when you need to access the storage space.
I still make great use of a fold-out desk from my student (1-room apartment) days. I can paint mini’s at it AND fold laundry on it. (Not at the same time though.)
one of best xlbs in ages, LMAO 🙂
Attack of the killer tomartoes
@lloyd
I have exactly the same dilemma – I moved into a new house a few months ago and my man cave is in a narrow attic room with eaves. I ended up going to Ikea AND bought a load of 4 X 2 tables from (25 quid a pop) and lined them along one wall. Gave me a nice long 2 foot wide workbench.
Underneath that, I bought a load of Plastic tubs, the slidey drawer ones, you get from B&Q.
I Put them under the tables and that left me with plenty of storage space for bits n bobs, paint, etc. Plus as Justin the wise remarked, you can make some project drawers and put specific projects into them. The great thing about the tables is I can also use them modularly to build different size gaming tables or to build different work bench configurations..
E.g. 3 tables lined up will make a 6 X 4 table. Or swich them about and add a few tables and you have an 8 X 6 table. The legs have the wee screw thingys on the bottoms so you can level the tables and have a nice flat surface even when you have a load of them joined up.
It also allows me to customise my work area and add / remove space when I need it. Like make a U shape, or an L shape, added anywhere on to the row of tables I put along the wall.
For holding the bigger stuff, like big boxes I just bought a couple of low cheap shelving units from Argos and they do the job fine. I even have room for a beer fridge under the tables….cunningly disguised as a cabinet incase the Missus ever decides to venture into my domain….
I watch XLBS on a Monday and it really confuses me when you say ‘HAPPY SUNDAY’, so could you please remember to point out that it might *not* be Sunday and that I should check my calendar before panicking. Thanks.
Cash. Just take loads of cash.
I’m not going to Salute. Enjoy the day – and my envy!
Really looking forward to the new historicals and fantasy minis in the 28mm ranges from Salute! Here’s hoping Warren’s bucks is a raging success and that we can get at least a couple of Irishmen to remain sober enough to bring us some highlights (of Salute at least).
Something not mentioned in the show about the Pantheon of Chaos minis… All the ‘Malice’ demons are taken from actual GW concepts for Malal that never got made…
Please do a video dedicated only to the great gaming tables. You had a video showing all the tables I think two years ago and I think it was great!
@lloyd
MJR Models (Model Kits for less on Facebook) are doing 10% discount off these… thought they light be of interest..
http://www.hobbyzone.pl/en/prd_list/prd_list.html
Great show lads.
But could you please ask Justin to stop shouting, plays havoc with my eardrums when listening with headphones.
Yiu guys kinda missed the point of Macrocosms Balls! KS. But that’s ok.
Nice update from them on the modelling potential of the minis-
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/2076383099/balls/posts/1545351?ref=dash
@lloyd I really like the Modular Workshop System found here: http://www.hobbyzone.pl/en/
I had to find a US distributor, because the shipping cost was almost as much as a unit. I’m sure it is probably a bit cheaper to ship to you. I have bought a couple paint racks and tool rack. It gives a nice clean look to my hobby space, but I quickly filled up the paint racks.
@lloyd Be careful relying on the cash machines at conventions. Last year at Essen it took 30 minutes of queueing to get cash. Even more annoying it was right at the end to pay for the parking 🙁
@dignity Also at Essen we saw quite a few people with giant suitcases on wheels to hold all their shiny new things!
