November 30, 2022 by brennon

Come and join us for another delve into the Projects to find the best of the best from the last week or so. We're going to be getting stuck into lots of great-looking miniature wargaming painting and hobbying this week...

Crimson Skies by hutch

We start off this week with a look at some impressive Pulpy fighter planes and contraptions from the hutch. They reminded me of an old Xbox game that I really enjoyed playing called Crimson Skies. Turns out, there is an awesome range of miniatures for the world that I never really knew about!

Crimson Skies #1 by hutch

Now Crimson Skies might be new to me but it's certainly not in terms of the wider wargaming world. It has seen many editions in its time but hutch likes to play the 1998 FASA release according to the project. All of the miniatures that you see here are white metal and are incredibly well-detailed.

Crimson Skies #2 by hutch

We're here to talk painting though and I think that the painting is very nice indeed! I like that hutch has gone for a brighter and poppier scheme that works with the Weird World War vibes. The comic book style works very nicely, especially when you see all of that lovely striking black lining between the segments of the plane's design. I also really like the cockpits with that flash from darker to lighter blue!

Crimson Skies #3 by hutch

There are a lot of different planes for you to have a look at over on the project link above. They cover a myriad of different nations and factions and you might find a few interesting morsels to help with your own plane painting, even if it's away from the Weird. I've got to give a little tip of the cap to the fun propellor designs though. I like the idea of just using the plastic with the whirring blades on it to showcase that they're powering away.

Handmaiden Of Pallas Athene by scribbs

Next up, we're moving to a realm of Fantasy and a bit of the Historical with scribbs. They recently picked up a miniature for the Handmaiden Of Pallas Athene from the folks at Lucid Eye (great range of miniatures!) and painted her up!

Handmaiden #1 by scribbs

Whilst we're just looking at a single miniature here, I thought it was well worth diving in and giving this one the ol' closer look. I think the work on the armour and gems is fantastic here and the miniature really pops, especially with such a good use of both white and bright blue across the figure. What obviously really stands out is the work that has gone into making that shield rock!

Handmaiden #2 by scribbs

The idea is that the shield was a challenge for scribbs to try and master. I think they managed to succeed in that endeavour! The work of bringing that owl to life would make Athena proud. That shouldn't detract from all of the extra detail that went into the rim of the shield either with that complex triangular pattern. It's always good to try and push yourself with a project sometimes and it has worked out well for scribbs.

6mm Flames Of War by elessar2590

Last but not least, we're looking at the work of elessar2590 who has completed their project to bring a tiny Flames Of War army to life. Now Flames Of War is quite small already at 15mm but they decided to crack out the 3D Printer and take things down to 6mm!

6mm Flames Of War #1 by elessar2590

The main focus of this project was in trying to make the scale much grander for Flames Of War whilst also retaining the same proportions when it came to unit footprints and the like. But, instead of a "base" being a single tank, it would instead be a company of tanks that were rolling forward across the desert.

6mm Flames Of War #2 by elessar2590

So, elessar2590 set to work on bringing all of those tanks to the table through the aid of 3D Printing and working out the best way to position the tanks and other vehicles into different companies, brigades and the like. As well as going through the thinking on the 3D Printing and set-up side of things, there is also a breakdown of how all of these got brought to life via the medium of paint.

6mm Flames Of War #3 by elessar2590

The scheme is quick and easy and works for picking out all of the little details on the vehicles. I did like that elessar2590 asked and answered the question of camouflage with "looks too complicated, no thanks". That's the way to go! I think it all looks really effective though and doesn't change the game mechanically but opens up the options when it comes to playing games that feel a bit more epic on the tabletop. I like any project that aims to make the game your own!
