Five Leagues From The Borderlands by demonsub

We start off this week with a look at some battle reports! demonsub has been getting stuck into Five Leagues from The Borderlands, a great Fantasy game that focuses in on solo wargaming. Their project shows off the creation of their warband and also charts the few quests they have already undertaken.

Five Leagues From The Borderlands #1 by demonsub

What's neat about solo wargaming is that you get to be indulgent. To that end, demonsub has gathered together some fun miniatures from across the wargaming spectrum to make up the members of their warband. This is then twined with some great painting that has brought them to life! I love that you've got a good mix of characters in there including a big ol' rabbit!

From there, demonsub has gone on to chart the progress of the adventures that their warband has been on. All of them start with a good write-up of what the focus is for the group alongside some neat shots of the tabletop and where everything is situated. You then get a nice breakdown of the action, blending together a little of narrative with the actual mechanical goings-on.

Five Leagues From The Borderlands #3 by demonsub

I think this is a great way to approach chronicling the games of Five Leagues From The Borderlands. It was what got me interested in Warhammer in the very beginning. I loved the fact that you told stories with your miniatures and that is exactly what demonsub is doing here.

I have snagged some of the images from the project (linked above) but this is by no means all of it. There is a LOT for you to get stuck into. It might get you interested in playing out this game yourself on the tabletop. It has got me thinking about solo wargaming again. I would love to do it but I just need the impetus. Maybe I could split the difference and try and do something cooperative?

Sláine: Kiss My Axe by zoidpinhead

Next up, perhaps somewhat inspired by Gerry's love for this particular game, we have zoidpinhead who has dived deep into Warlord's new Sláine miniatures game. Their project has only just started up but it's looking like it is going to be getting stuck in!

Slaine #1 by zoidpinhead

We have seen a number of the miniatures already painted up including one of the enemies that Sláine will be clashing with on the tabletop. This all feels like it has been a good opportunity for zoidpinhead to do a bit of experimenting before diving deep into the range properly.

There was even a painted version of Ukko for you to enjoy. Make sure to keep an eye out for the "Lloyd Shot"...

Slaine #2 by zoidpinhead

There is a breakdown of how each of these miniatures were painted over on the project. So, if you want to replicate this then you can. The game is also in need of some fun terrain and so we saw a bit of that come to life over on the project too.

Slaine #3 by zoidpinhead

This resulted in some awesome larger pieces of terrain that feature the runic imagery that is so prevalent amongst the artwork for Sláine. I think these look great and there is a lot more for you to dive into besides this. More terrain has been the focus of the moment but hopefully, we will see zoidpinhead move on to painting some more of the characters soon.

Marvel: Crisis Protocol by jjgrubb

Lastly, we're going back in time a little bit. But, I thought it was worth highlighting the work by jjgrubb which is (fingers crossed) going to become part of a Spring Clean Challenge entry!

Marvel Crisis Protocol #1 by jjgrubb

The fun thing here is that jjgrubb was working on painting these miniatures in a very distinctive comic book style. The idea is to try and match the look of these superheroes and villains that would have appeared in the pages of comic books and in animated cartoons. I think they have done a fantastic job!

Marvel Crisis Protocol #2 by jjgrubb

The technique means that jjgrubb has had to do a lot of very bold painting, playing with big and powerful colours. Then, they have had to be clean and on point with the shading and highlighting then go in and do all of that dark lining that shows off the definition in the miniatures.

Marvel Crisis Protocol #3 by jjgrubb

This is a very brave approach to painting these miniatures but I think that it really makes these models pop. These are such iconic and diverse characters from the Marvel universe that it seems apt to give them the care and attention that jjgrubb has done here.

Now, we just need to see jjgrubb return to this technique and show it off on some more of the more modern models within the Crisis Protocol collection. I think you're doing an amazing job so stick at it!
