I’ve stopped playing 40K twice. The first time was when 3rd edition was released. It was a big change and did away with a lot that I liked and was familiar with. It also coincided with me going away to university and having less time to game. I still bought White Dwarf so didn’t consider myself to have quit the hobby completely, but I did consciously choose to stop playing when the edition changed.
Funnily enough, with hindsight, I now think I was being unfair and indeed, and although different, I think it became quite a good and interesting game. There were definitely elements that appealed to me, and via the Ork codex – which I thought represented my favourite army at the time very well – I picked the game up again around the time 4th Ed came out.
Gradually the game became more and more convuluted, more and more supplements were needed, flyers were introduced into the game, crazy formations were added… And I lost interest. By this time I was also dabbling in other games and was just getting more and more fed up with GW’s attitude towards its customers as well as games being dull and unintuitive: armies just didn’t play the way I felt they should. As I became busy with other things – other games but also politics – I gradually stopped playing. Not consciously at first, but there did come a point where I said to myself: I no longer play 40K and I’m not interested in doing so again.
I haven’t yet had a chance to play 8th edition, but I would like to.
