So it’s nearly time for a new weekender; just a few loose ends to tie up on this one. I got my animatronic forge working, but it’s all held together with string and blu-tack and looks a bit rough – as soon as it’s presentable, I’ll post update pics.
In the meantime, I got a bit sidetracked…. adding LEDs to miniatures again!
Those 1206 surface mount LEDs in the tutorial? They’re massive, right? I got hold of some Titan Forge “Metal Beards” (self-printed of course) and modified the .stl files to include channels for wiring. Unfortunately, the robot dragon on Gargy The Dragon Engineer is only a few millimetres tall and his head is far to small to fit one in…
So I made the void in his head as large as I dared (the resin gets very fragile; it’s already very brittle, and when it’s so thin it’s like your mum’s best china) and soldered up a tiny 0603 LED:
The channels meant that even microfine wire had a few problems squeezing through the voids:
But eventually, with plenty of patience (and quite a bit of swearing) the wires went through not just the head of the dragon, but the dragon body, down the dawrf’s arm, back along his body and down his leg. The best bit….
….it worked!
So I threw an LED inside Lord Gemalin too, to make his cyborg eye glow a cool, hi-tech blue:
Of course, they still need painting up to block out the LED light from everywhere except where I want it to escape from – but as a first try, dry fit, they’re looking pretty good!
