FWIW – I got an email from the guitar group just this morning saying that they were thinking about “time limiting” their Discord server (I think they use a bot to “lock” the server outside active hours) as a sort-of halfway house measure. Of course, it’s dressed up as a “here’s how you can be sure you’ll always get access to our great tutors” and “now you can practice and show off a few times a week instead of trying to be great all the time”.

They’re encouraging members to use the forums “outside hours”: post videos/mp3s of your playing or ask your – often music theory related – questions on the forums, then a couple of times a week, the servers are open for everyone to get together and have a chat.

It’s a bit like @warzan‘s weekly radio show, but I think their plans are for three or four hours, three times a week at different times, to allow people in different time zones to be able to use the chat – but they made a great point I hadn’t even considered about Discord: many of the guitar players live in US GMT-8:00 time zone and many of us are in UK or Europe GMT+1:00 or GMT+2:00. One of the reasons they give to encourage us back onto the forums is that time zones don’t matter there.
