Competition Winners
Next up we're going to be getting stuck into the Competition Winners where we find out who won the Rory's Story Cube competition with their stories...
xaussienannh: In the land of amoeba I had been sent to deal with the evil crab in the ghastly cave of doom, only to find the rain had shorted out my laser pistol (its energy meter, zeroed, sigh), It was a bitter pill to swallow. My plans in ruins, I decided the best action was to rethink my endeavours over a nice boiled egg for afternoon tea need to break a door down sonny. love her)
fireblarney: His tablet shaped ship out of fuel and finding himself stranded on a rocky coastline the microscopic alien organism searched desperately for a host body to protect himself from the toxic atmosphere. As luck would have it he found protection in the hard shelled body of a nearby crab. As the rain came pouring down from the sky he steered his newly acquired and mutating body into a nearby cave, spinning himself a chitinous egg to complete the process. Emerging he began the construction of a simple beam pistol while chuckling to himself, “Let the humans’ come with their axes, I’ll be ready for them”
badula: Once upon a time a Protoplasmic traveller crashed in Antarctica he had to build an igloo to find shelter from the harsh environment then he tried to boil an egg with his microwave gun but the temperature was too low luckily he had an emergency morphing pill so he morphed into an antarctic king Crab and lived happily ever after
...and the grand winner of The Army Painter competition to name the new paint.
Camry - Voidshield Blue
Well done!

Happy Weekend!
Happy Saturday! Any guesses how many times Ben will say “and stuff like that” in this episode?
What do you mean, kill him off like they did in Star Wars?!?
Are you thinking Art Deco?
Loving the new vehicles on show, shame my wallet has gone on holiday..lol or it would be overworked trying to afford all those minis.
I’ve played shattered void at Salute a couple of times, fantastic game.
It’s the Weekend!
4Ground keep pumping out great terrain don’t they?
With many games I tend to play with LoS into and out of the building to models on that side; but not through as there”d be internal walls and furniture. Unless you gave those in which case you can go true LoS!
Great start to the weekend guys!
The Tornado was a joint project with the UK, Germany and Italy. All three countries had the tornado. Seems Battlefront are making models they can multi theme across NATO. For example the leopard 1 was used bu Germany, Belgium, Denmark etc. The range could be expanded with new lists but use already produced models. Cooool
Loving weekender!!!
The Harrier is from the late 1960s, was an old bird at the time of team yankee 🙂
I second this @reiton, many people still believe the Harrier is a very modern aircraft because it was so revolutionary 🙂
@lloyd Art Deco is the word you’re is looking for.
Yeah my mind failed me completely:)
Saw this kickstarter when it went live the sculpts look really nice, I am very tempted if i don’t win to pick up the kickstarter however free stuff is never bad!
The Harrier II – since Team Yankee was set in 1986 (or thereabouts) the RAF had not achieved operational status with these at the time – there were older Harrier 1’s still knocking around but they were pretty poor by comparison. The second generation Harriers were an American design, superficially similar to the original but sharine no components whatsoever. The AV-8B (the US version) made its maiden flight in November 1981 and entered service with the USMC in January 1985 so if Battlefront put the US Marines into the game at some point, the aircraft Arnie was flying is a possibility.
@dorthonion I believe the Harrier GR3 covers this period?
Either way there’d have been some sort of Harrier in British service around this period…
That’s all I need to hear 😛
That Amarok interceptor instantly brings up the Battle squadron soundtrack 🙂 nice minis, just like the ground troops
total love the weekender show 🙂
very tempted with dungeon time, I did say no more kickstarters but it only a small one so it doesn’t really count?
Lloyd, you need to play the Brits in Team Yankee!
@harpoon71 but then I’d have to wait longer to start!
For once actually have no work today so I can properly get stuck into the weekender
Happy weekend
Im in love with al 4ground stuff when i get a primer Job One of my goals is to have a full western city with 15-20 buildings and some fabled for my Warmachine
@lloyd @dignity those buildings look amazing. Well on for Dust and Team Yankee!!!! Will bring both up. Looking forward to seeing the buildings in the ‘flesh’ sure we’ll have loads of time
@buggeroff Roger, will have both. But not sure we will have the latest Dust cards in time.
I have to agree that the Earth set for Shattered Void looks awesome, and would be my choice for sure unless something awesome is waiting in the wings to be revealed.
Spattered Void WAHEEEEEY! Goodonyer @lloyd! 😀
On a serious note: I like the look of this, I’m in and it’s just funded!
Hell, Shattered Void is looking better and better.
Diving into the Background a bit might have been a cool thing here. It is quite interesing. Especially “the third option” has a lot more to offer than just being alien or different.
The Vitruvians created them as a super weapon against the human forces by re-using human technology and bodies. But they defected and identified both of the warring parties as their enemies.
I just love that.
I have to disagree with you on the new Conan movie. The new movie had more in common with the chracter from the books then the old ones with Arnie.
I both agree and disagree. In certain aspects the Schwarzenegger as well as the Momoa rendition had their great faithful moments. And a lot more and in different fields than what they typically are credited for. In other regards they both just dismissed the original spirit. Often in favour of some hollywood cheesiness. That goes for the representation of the character (not that he was described entirely consistent and one wayed to begin with, quite the contrary) as well as the ways of the hyborian world, backstory, plot etc.
Happy weekend all!
I’m eagerly awaiting the West Germans for TY, can’t wait.!
Otherwise it’s still all Bolt Action for me, in 28 and now 15mm.
But also Saga (I’m starting a Russian warband at the moment using the new Fireforge figures) and Black Powder (French for the Retreat from Moscow, British for Peninsular War, AWI and 2nd Afghan War) and Hail Caesar (Romans and Celts).
Darn, BoW should definitely cover *more* historicals 😎
Any chance of putting a Dust building side by side and take a photo, would be interesting to see how they compare.
Seems this is the year of the SPACESHIP!
wish I could be as relaxed as ben about my game systems. so happy and content , unmoved by the whims of popular opinion.
but i’m in the llyod meltdown camp .
Justin has a cure for this , play everything .
Lloyd go and wash your mouth out with soap and water for bad mouthing the force awakens.
I’m having to keep the wallet firmly closed for a little while, but as always the 4Ground kits are very tempting.
Thanks for the Story Cubes win guys, they’ll get a bit of use in this house 🙂
I’m tempted by Team Yankee but will hold out for Brits..
Currently I’m into several games
Napoleonics, Bolt Action, Ronin, Age of Sigmar, Frostgrave, Helldorado, Field of Glory (ECW), Songs of Blades and Heroes and VBCW
I’ve just gotten a copy of Airfix Battles, and I wanna try Infinity, Saga and Bushido.
4Ground did it again, I want these buildings. I think they will work for Malifaux too. And also for Infinity. Yes I really like them.
Oh no the AI is attacking. Bring me my defrag granades.
Shattered void looks freaking amazing in the vid 😀
Happy weekender.
I’m really, really loving Bushido at the moment. I’m also playing Infinity, Bolt Action and Saga.
I have a bunch of other games that I also play but I plan on trying Frostgrave, Wrath of Kings, Dead Man’s Hand and Jugula later this year.
Just for @warzan, my 5yo comes over and asked where the boss is! Then say’s he’s away so the others can do what they like.
lol 🙂
@dignity, I see no cause to ask what you’re missing. The real question seems to be what Lloyd’s got too much of. Someone ought to help the poor fellow. Don’t know what he’s on, but at the very least it can’t be healthy to be so long on fire…
I like that idea, of the Shattered Void ships for use in X-Wing.
Love the weekend! Team Yankee:Leopard does look tempting, but need to hold out for the British Army of the Rhine. However those new medium tanks may part me with my cash!
The Harrier was in service for a long time before the supposed time line of Team Yankee. It’s older than the tornado
Shattered void looks fun but how is it different to x-wing? Also what were the other ships pictured in the size comparison picture?
Really not sure about dungeon time, hasn’t grabbed me at all. So at least my wallet is happy.
@dignity -The fifth mate can get the USAriadna box. 🙂
@lloyd – As much as you talked about the game, it is now Chattered Void… 😛
Like the fact that Shattered Void models can be used with x wing. Allows for much more flexibility in either game. Will obviously require a bit of work in terms of stats etc but the potential is great.
Nice buildings.
Shattered Void is looking rather nice. I do hope they do well with their kickstarter. Right now I am thinking I should get me some of those story dice. They do seem like a fun travel game.
Always a great start to my weekend.
Thanks for the win Guys, and i am glad you get my sense of humor Ben as most don’t.
My wife uses story dice in her play therapy, Ive also used them in my own work. Nice to see the crossovers from therapy to the gamer universe.
My games are AoS, GOA, LOTR and BA…with a view to Konflict 47 quite soon. Oh, and Ive a fair ton of AVP on the way!
Phew, thats enough!
Great show as usual guys.
Like the look of the 3rd race for Shattered Void, remind me of armed Snails
Currently try to ‘multi-game’ all my projects, so I can use my Saga Saxons as a Human force in ‘Dragon Rampant’. Also just got into ‘Gates of Antares’ and will be getting ‘Konflikt 47’, though not sure about the previewed starter sets (Zombies again for the Germans, why oh why !!)
Happy weekend everyone. Shatered Void looks great, the preview from earlier inthe week really has me interested.
Those human ships are a neat blend of Battlestar and Wing Commander. They will make a nice change from my usual Scum and Villainy!
Wow I simply love those new Steam Punk Building’s from 4Ground they will be just perfect for my Wild West Exodus stuff
Sorry but not art deco more 1890 s
I still think Cool Blue is a much better than Warp Shield Blue.
Great show guys, @dignity the harrier started service with the UK in 1965 with the first test aircraft shipped to the US for tests with their forces so well used by the 80s. @lloyd imperial would look like the 60s 70s buildings so only one type of building would be needed to look realistic?
I think the more variety the cooler it would look though.
Perhaps but everything is mass produced for speed, buildings would be the same I think with special building’s being the only nonstandard building? on imperial planets. @lloyd
A few thoughts.
Shattered Void, interesting I may have to jump in on that Kickstarter The Astivar (The Third Option) are quite appealing.
On the subject of ‘Will Artificial Intelligences wipe us out?’ I think it will depend on whether on not they are Sentient. A Non-Sentient AI could be bound by programmed rules, forcing it to obey, without control, such an AI would potentially see us as a threat to its existence and logically respond accordingly ie. Kill all Humans!
A fully Sentient AI could only be bound by its own Ideals and moral codes whatever they may be, it may see us as a threat, ignore us, treat us as children to be cared for, as gods to be served, or as resources to be exploited, we won’t know until we create one.
Independence Day: Resurgence was basically X-COM: the Movie, an enjoyable popcorn muncher of a film, nothing special, but enjoyable none the less.
Those new fighters look fantastic. Though Team Yankee took the first place award this week.
Interesting game. Now I admit I need to re-watch this episode as exhaustion put paid to the last 40 min or so.
All the ships for Shattered Void look superb, they definitely deserve more backers 🙂 There was also a mention of a possible campaign system where pilots could gain experience through battles if I recall correctly. That just sounds amazing
I love the weekender! Now give me my prize.
Shattered Void looks awesome, would be cool to win a pledge.
nice looking buildings
Justin could sell me anything with that voice! 🙂
@lloyd I think you are thinking of Art Deco but it is not Art Deco style if anything it is more Arts and Crafts. Also Lloyd if you want for banners for your Dust game give me a shout and do them for you.
Yeah that’s what I was searching for.
Man I love a harrier!
Great weekender.
4 ground buildings long good.
Shattered void ships look good. Loving the paint jobs on them.
Went in for the 15mm WDM kick starter and they are nice minis. In for Shattered Void – been looking for a new space ship game to replace Silent Death
Apart from the Harrier there is the possibility of using the Jaguar which had a long service up to the first Gulf war.
Love the look of the shattered void ships!!
Will definitely have to check out the rules and their kickstarted!
I reckon I would choose the Astivar! They look really really alien! And very organic looking twith all the curves and stuff. The EEF look amazing as well though!
liking the buildings
High energy weapons would have some recoil for the fact that it would super heat the air in front of the ‘barrel’.
The thing about and AI is if we do it right they will have things like morals will be baked in. We have laws and we have morals. Those combined lets society work so a AI designed to work with people and the society that they live in would have to understand such things.
I like the shattered void stuff, it’s been a long time coming
Shattered void ships look good, especially at their prices, and good to see a third fleet, hopefully more might appear as ks goes on
Thanks for the great show guys! Shattered Void looks really cool and those West Germans are whats going to push me into Team Yankee.
Those Leopards look great! It’s cool that Battlefront is releasing other NATO armies. I wonder if they’ll do the same for the Warsaw Pact.
So many new game, imposible to have all, sad panda.
Shattered Void is looking interesting. And I like the sizing of the models, being the smaller fighter types as well as being size wise compatible with X Wing.
It seems that space combat games are like buses. Nothing since the days of Renegade Legion and Silent Death and then we have 2 Star Wars games, Halo, Drop Fleet and now Shattered Void.
I’ve been waiting for Shattered Void for sooo long! Now that it’s out, of course I’ve invested in X-Wing! I think Lloyd is right – there’s definitely the possibility of cross-over, especially with the Astivarian ships. Their shape reminds me of the Ssi-Ruuk ships in Truce at Bakura. Who says we can’t run an X-Wing “Legends” game?
In space no-one can hear you scream… for prizes.
@lloyd Some wallpaper with the right texture can make you wonderful cobblestone streets. I created an entire Mordheim village using three different rolls of wallpaper.
Awesome, really looking for this Shattered Void game.
For the game Shattered Void, i’d like to see more spaceships.
Those new buildings from 4Ground are really cool looking, definitely don’t mind the interior being open with the added detail on the outside. I am thinking what Justin is, outskirts of Berlin will be amazing with these buildings.
Happy weekend on Monday Weekenders 🙂 I am on vacation and finally had some time to watch this 🙂
The movement in Shattered Void seems to be a bit of a streamlined X-wing. The design and flavor of the ships remind me a bit of Silent Death. Looking forward to seeing them in person.
Looks quite a refreshing space game!
The shattered war stuff looks great
Shattered Void does look quite interesting.
One has had no coffee and the other OMG has had way too much; more hyper than a four year old on a bag of sugar. But great show as usual guys.
As always, another awesome show. Thank you guys.
Loving it!
4Ground looks amazing!
Will we see any allies for Soviets in Team Yankee?
Love the weekender videos 😀
I have several of the ships from shattered void as they were handing out some samples at Salute. The sculpts are really nice and detail is crisp. They have some good design going through the factions too. I chatted to the guys on the stand at salute and they were really genuine and friendly. I really hope the kickstarter does well an the game is successful.
The ships look amazing! Would love to try out the game.
GENERAL OBSERVATIONS AND PARTICULAR MISTAKE OF THE SHATTERED VOID DRAFT
1.) Crowdfunding has become too convenient even for mediocre concepts.
The whole Indiegogomania and Kickstarteritis are getting way out of hand. Since companies and individuals have discovered that they can substitute entrepreneurship and market analysis with a crowdfunding campaign that loads the burden of investment and financing on the customers’ backs, there are dozens of pre-financing campaigns every week. In the beginning, crowdfunding was a good idea to get the show of innovative projects on the road, but these days, it’s just a way of handing all the risk of entrepreneurship over to the client from the start, and even big companies ask people to pay for a promise in the case of every run-of-the-mill addition to their product range. At the same time, we see a drastical decline in reward value as a recompensation for the backers who finance the production phase for them. Initially, people who took the risk and financed projects obtained the products at a significantly reduced price, usually at cost pluis a small margin. Nowadays, IG/KS creators exploit the goodwill and enthusiasm of fans by charging ridiculously expensive prices for a couple ‘exclusives’ without which gameplay suffers.
In this particular case, £70 GBP buy 10 plastic ships, a couple plastic chits and a downloadable .pdf rulebook. In order to become playable, add-ons for at least another £60 GBP (i.e. £6 per little plastic ship), but more realistically a total of £200 GBP are needed to obtain all the game materials and niceties to make a decent impression on the gaming table. That’s ridiculous and the reason why the project hardly reached its funding goal after two weeks, whereas fair offers and well-run campaigns do so within two hours.
2.) Improper Choice of Materials and a Chaos of Scales and Sizes
The first general annoyance in the miniature figure industry: the chaos of scales and sizes. Whereas plastic model kits of different manufacturers in the same scale are all compatible and fit nicely together, tin soldier companies stupidly specify sizes, but without any congruency, standardization or common sense. Even figure ranges from the same manufacturer that both show the same scale on the box sometimes vary 20% in size for the same type of figure. That’s insane and drives customers mad whenever the need to complement limited ranges arises. There is a comparison picture on the WDM KS page that shows space troopers from different manufacturers next to each other. With a lousy six figures of their own, couldn’t they make them compatible with what’s already out there, goddamn it?
Another impertinence of wargame figure and scenery manufacturers is the arrogance with which they insist on casting windows and other glass or transparent elements of models in opaque material. Airfix, Revell, Zvezda & Co. deliver their cars and airplanes with really transparent ‘glass’ windscreens and cockpits since 50 years, at decent prices per kit. Wargame companies charge way more for their products, but the windows come in the same gray plastic as the walls, which always looks ridiculous and makes lighting a pain in a part that the sun never tans. People who prefer to paint their windows blue or black can always do so, but realistic modelling requires transparent parts to be transparent. Since WDM cast the bases in transaprent acrylic, why not the ships as well? It would make lighting the cockpits possible, look better and more realistic even without LEDs and those who prefer to smear them over can always do so. The same goes for the rest of the hull: don’t like to paint? Then simply spary them over with primer to get the same gray plastic ‘appeal’ as always.
3.) Shattered Void is not Game, but a Concept thereof
Now to the particular shortcomings of the game Shattered Void. Despite a pretty steep price point for a board game, there’s nothing in the box, as described above. A whopping £70 GBP for ten little plastic ships and a few plastic tokens? No printed rule book, no game board, tons of add-ons needed to project at least the impression of a game and not just a bunch of lose figures … There’s just no value for money, and except for a few really devoted fans, the abysmal result of the campaign so far proves it.
One can only wonder what the WDM guys were smoking, but it is an unfortunate tendency that we see more and more often in crowdfunding projects: the creators assume no risk, offering no bang for the buck, include bullshit like T-shirts and useless gimmicks in the core game and stretch goals while game components are sold as add-ons, etc. Instead of using the IG/KS campaign to open conventional financing and distribution channels, they want the entire design and production cost financed by backers for the later retail phase, ignoring that in today’s world, there is just too much other stuff that people can spend their money on.
For the money it costs before it comes close to what could be called a complete game, there are many alternatives out there that look better, play better and bring a lot more to the table than Shattered Void.
I think you’ve misunderstood a couple of things WDM are doing
1) this is exactly what kickstarter is for – they have part developed (ie most 3D design, 80% rules, support materials, etc) and need money for production. The first bit costs money so it’s not like they have absolved themselves of all risk. Price to play is better than x-wing (same number of ships and lower price per ship) They’re not painted but this is a boutique game not mass production.
2) they are using resin for the ships. They’ve been careful to say exactly what type since this has been a problem in other kickstarters. Clear resin is possible but a pain to get right (and those cockpits are tiny!). Airfix/revell/tamiya/etc are using HIPS based injection moulding. That’s a high bar to entry – they can do because they don’t add a lot of new things each year and own a lot of the manufacturing process.
3) from some guys view, the whole kickstarted market is depressed at the moment so you can’t read that much into it. I’d suspect another reason is that without well known IP, space ship games just don’t sell as well (something about faces probably, people like faces).
The game is designed to scale with the initial starter sets, this is typical of the genre. No extra mats, scenery, etc? This stuff isn’t cheap (or it’s printed paper), and there are people out there already making it so there’s not much benefit sticking it in. It’s a pity about the rule book not being printed yet but they have a chicken-and-egg problem – do they release a printed book and FAQ it to hell, or maintain a living ruleset and see who wants it printed later? I’ve seen many complaints about first edition rules these days so I think they’ve probably made the right decision.
These guys are coming out of the boutique wargaming tradition, not board games, and from a miniature centric world. I think you’re confusing something that’s not what you want with something that has some sort of absolute flaw in it.
i must say, shattered void looks amazing. ive checked out ks page and it seems that game utilizes some good mechanics. definitly game to try.
Sounds interesting!
I have wanted to get into infinity but all the other games I have on the go is keeping me away form it for the moment. I think I’ll get into it down the road perhaps
