Happy Weekend!!!
Congrats to all the prize winners!! 😀
Happy Weekend @enginseer, any games planned?
Sadly no. 🙁 🙁 I’ve been working my tail off during the week and now I have all of the little things that have been getting delayed have to be dealt with. But I have the Weekender and XLBS to console me and I might steal some time to do some painting later. 😀
Happy Saturday / Friday night
Hey @rasmus hope you’re having a great weekend mate, how are you settling in over in the states?
It’s the Weekend!
Unfortunately RSI like arthritis of my wrist has put the end to any attempts at hobby recently, having to get it vicariously through BoW/OTT. A weekend of project browsing… and voting… awaits.
I feel for you mate, closest I’ve come was that attack of gout into my wrists and ankles, even now I still feel a bit of grittyness in the wrists. It can totally suck the fun out of trying to do anything intricate. 🙁 Are there other parts of the hobby you think you might like to divert your energies to? (I enjoyed the challenge of the 3D printing – and found the technical aspects of it interesting)
Gonna try playing with myself a lot more, wrist permitting…
While Warren picks himself up off the floor I’ll qualify that it’s time to actually get some quality playtime out of some of the things I’ve backed over the last couple of years and can go solo with like 7th Continent, or even some more KD:M.
Apart from that I might sit back and apply some brain power to an idea I’ve been sitting on for a while; a whole different kind of modelling… and no I don’t mean fashion. An ex SW developer I work in the area of systems architectures and modelling and have been wondering… Shhh… I’ve probably said too much already!
Lol
You single handedly cracked me up there 😉
Looking forward to learning more about your project!
Thanks very much @dracs and @dignity for the very kind words on the Kursk series and the live stream we did the other day. Definitely a great conversation with the “Tank God” John Lyons!
I caught a chunk of the live stream @oriskany … really really enjoyable – great stuff! 🙂
Watching the re-play on Twitch @warzan , YES, I see your comments. So many comments we weren’t able to address or respond to. Hopefully a re-play gets posted on the site in the coming days so I can start replying to more of these comments, I don’t want anyone to think they were forgotten or ignored. 😀

Great Warren Meets Mat segment!
Indeed – pirate scenarios would work great on this mat, especially the Blood n’ Plunder historical angle on the Age of Piracy. So many of those pirates made their “bases” in inlets, intracoastal waterways, etc that riddle South Florida coastlines (both east and west), extending up across Georgia and even the Carolinas. It was in these inlets, channels, etc. where many of the more famous historical pirate battles were fought.
I also like @dracs ‘ idea of Mobile Riverine Force / 9th Infantry Division and IV Corps ARVN forces fighting against NLF/VC guerillas in a Mekong Delta.
Pacific? Eh … not really the island hopping campaign of the Central Pacific, but maybe if you’re sticking with the CBI (China/Burma/India) theater, or iusing those new Australian units mentioned later in the episode for some of the New Guinea / New Britain South Pacific battles.
Speaking of which, yes, on those Warlord Australian forces, we did touch in this in some of the Pacific War articles way back in 2014. These are the battles in New Guinea, Battle of Timor, Borneo Campaign, these are all deep-jungle actions that heavily involved Australian forces. Definitely something that we should probably take another look at, it’s often an overlooked part of the Pacific Theater of WW2.

Happy Weekend, awesome to see more of The Drowned Earth. Thx guys!
Congratulations to all the winners !
Is Warzan trying to channel Babe Ruth in the banner photo?
lol totally 😀
As the screen names can be a bit odd I cannot fathom why you do not just put a list of the winners in the description. Seriously, why do you carry on stumbling over screen names week after week?
it’s just a bit of fun, its just part of the show, and folk get a little name check 🙂
Also if it’s that tough I can just put out a list of winner names in a separate post…
Didn’t you guys do that at the Salute give away? I think with things like today and salute where it is a huge list it would be great to have a list as well 🙂 If it is only one or two I think it can be without list 🙂
Yes but it’s great to force you to watch the show first lol 😉
Insanity was never a positive thing in the works of H P Lovecraft.
Happy Weekend everyone 😀 .I agree with @tankkommander , i was surprised you guys didn’t put that many winners in the show notes ? As far as the Archer goes, historically the arrow could be nocked either side of the bow considering style of Archery and dominant hand of the Archer.
I will probably do it as a separate post on Monday
Happy Saturday! ^_^
Ohhh yeah! Winning TTCombat prize, awesome!
Very sorry my dear Justin that I was the most difficult prize announcement ^_^
Cheers guys! Can’t wait ^_^
Congratulations chap!
Thanks! ^_^
Well done @waxfrance enjoy mate!
Thanks Warren! ^_^ (and happy holidays, buddy!)
Perfect timing, a lot of games for the French National Bastille Day! Aye aye!
Unless I managed to miss it, I think you forgot to announce the winner of the Fantasy Dungeon Set from Battlesystems?
We will double check and if it was missed it will go out next week 🙂
I think they did mention it. I can’t remember who it was (only that it wasn’t me!) but I do remember them mentioning it!
I DID miss it (watched it a second time, congrats to DamnitPrawn). There were a gazillion prizes being won, it’s easy for the old and befuddled to miss these things 🙁
No need to worry Warzan, all is good. And enjoy the rest of your Holidays 🙂
The ” bigature ” is part of a pledge level, the R’lyeh Rising Pledge, but my poor wallet couldn’t take the strain.
I hear the sound of that wallet crying out in pain lol
It’s happy for now that i couldn’t take a pledge on,but it doesn’t realise just i’m just lulling it into a false sense of security for next year 😉 , Conan 2.0 and Mythic Battles: Ragnarok will hove into view in no time at all and a geek has to be prepared 😉 😀 ….. Or is that just the Scouts…..?
Happy Weekend!
I love the Kursk series so far and the live chat yesterday was really a blast with a lot of goodpoints made by the guys.
The Aussies for BA look great.
Was great to see you on the chat yesterday! 🙂
Was great to see you with a drink today 😀
Lol looking forward to another one a little later. But have an appointment to float around the lazy river with 4 little ones to keep first 😉
Have fun 🙂
Happy Weekend and Sam I know what your saying about Cthulhu Death May Die it something about it but I think its the stereotyping on mental illness but maybe it will prove us wrong.
I think there is definately a conversation to be had on XLBS when I’m back about the pros and cons of stereotyping in our industry… 🙂
Totally agree there with you Warzan and aren’t you meant to be enjoying your holiday, lol. Actually have a wonderful time with the family mate
Lol will do mate (distracting myself from mini fencing here – with the boys it’s turned into a weird form of mini jousting lol)
If you have thoughts on the topic mate please drop me a pm and we can use that to help us frame the discussion 🙂
I will mate
Happy Weekend 🙂 Will be painting and building today 🙂
Oh my days, I won something!
Well done mate enjoy the prize 🙂
Thank you from one Northern Irish Warren to another 😉
great to see you all again guys happy weekend everyone.,
Happy weekend @radegast6 hope you have a magnificent one 🙂
@warzan thx mate, I bet is not as good as yours if you Camping, but its my weekend of so its not bad at all. now you get back to your family and stop reading comments!
Wow, and I started this weekend being chuffed about my golden button! but then to hear my name coming up in the prize section and even better for the hobby god bag of all things I am blown away. Thank you thank you guys for awarding me that, just bloody awesome.
Feeling great!
Martin
Oh and I am going to see Az today at Warboar Games for some more Soloman Kane and Joan of Arc goodness, this is a pretty epic weekend so far.
Give @thisisazrael a kiss from us 😉
Congratulations mate, well deserved, hope to see you and another bootcamp.
still jammy dancing, but congrats to all the winners… my goodness there was a lot of cool stuff there.
@warzan in a hobby not known for its sartorial elegance, that shirt is a shining beacon to us all. Thumbs up from me.
My body is a gift to the community to demonstrate supreme fashion and elegance mate 😉
Ha! Between us we’ll get this hobby bang on trend, just as soon as I change out of this band t-shirt.
Great weekender. Thanks guys 🙂
Congrats to all the prize winners! Especially @laughingboy for his Malign Sorcery and for stepping in for Hobby Hangout.
On the subject of representation of Mental Illness in pop culture, it’s not the silly use of mental illness as a stereotype that puts me off something, it’s the fact that I immediately lose some respect for those responsible that they’d be willing to put their uneducted idea out there as something cool, oblivious to how one note it is.
So while I’ll still play a game or watch a show that stereotypes in this manner, it really diminishes the credentials of those involved in it’s creation.
For the Cthulu game, I’m not sure how it’s implemented, but it’s been designed to be something cool and I’m willing to bet that anyone with experience of the actual illnesses depicted will be sighing and facepalming everytime the abilities come up in game. I don’t mind it, it’s just daft and quite immature. But they also made that cringy ‘adult’ trailer for HATE so what’s new lol.
edit: just to say that while it steered the weekender into a serious direction for a few minutes, I’m very glad Sam felt able to bring that up and make it a talking point. As I suffer from mental health problems myself, it’s always always appreciated when someone can bring it into view.
In regards to the archery issue, the arrow goes on the outside if you are using the western style, drawing back with the split two fingers. The arrow will go on the inside if you are using the Eastern style, which you normally use a thumb ring to aid drawing back the string.
I personally draw from the inside, two fingers, no thumb ring.
I don’t think it really matters in modern archery, but historically that’s where both styles originated.
Love the look of the lost kingdom miniatures and atlantis ogres. Just wish they would sell the STL’s so that I can use a DLP printer to print them off. Allows me to print which ever I need and want instead of having a single opportunity to get a whole army.
@dracs – you should’ve continued playing with the buttons until Justin could no longer resist headdesking. ?
Is “…and a cuddly toy!” QVC? I thought that was the Generation Game. ?
I share Justin’s horror at Sam’s disrespect for books. ?. You don’t do that Sam, I used to think you were cool man! ?
?
I was thinking the same as Justin with the mat; from a distance it looks like it’d work well for a small scale minis for naval battles with tight manoeuvring between the islands.
If you miss WHFB Sam, pop over to South Wales and I’ll give you a game. 🙂
I agree with Sam, when I did archery in my youth (regular bow and longbow) fairly sure that was the side the arrow was on; iirc it’s soyou can rest the arrow on your hand for stability.
The problem with the Admiral Akbar expansion – It’s A Lie! No…wait…wrong meme…
?
Not a bad movie so much a cheesy one – Iron Sky. Moon Nazis, that’s all that needs be said, lol.
“You can never go wrong with a flaming sword.” – you can if you’re soaked in oil. ?
“Everyone loves Cthulhu.” – sounds like thename of a sitcom. ?
To answer Sam’s question of who introduces their kid to Cthulhu – obviously it’s someone who pledged their first born to him and this is just the hand over.
On the serious topic – don’t worry about bringing it up Sam, you didn’t bring things down. :). Actually that could make for an interesting video – you guys looking at how mental health is depicted in games and how that relates to reality. :). Although if you delve deeper into your own experiences, don’t be surprised if half of us want to wrap you up in a blanket and make you a nice cup of tea afterwards. ?
Didn’t win anything; damn, knew I souldve given you guys a bigger bribe-err I mean, congrats to the winners.
?
Justin is human? I thought he was a mouse controlling a puppet via an elaborate system of pullies and levers. ?
?
Nice show. However, at the end, jemmy-dancing. I didn´t know I had it in me …
Woo Hoo, thanks guys,
to hot to jammy dance, but I did manage a ‘what me, must rewind and check’
Happy Weekend!!!
Congrats to all the prize winners!!
Have a good vacation @warzan !
I actually really liked the segment where Sam discusses the “mechanics” of madness in the Cthulu game. I think it’s a great discussion to be had and touches on a lot of serious points in modern game design and marketing that, yes, we’ll never be able to completely solve, but at the same time should never stop discussing.
There are often elements in the design of many games that many people will see as “just a part of the game” and others will find somewhat disturbing because of a personal connection. This often happens in pop culture as well, as Sam mentions. Movies and TV continually poke at “stoners” or “drunks” or “lushes” – great for a laugh until you’re dealing with serious substance issues abuse in your family.
In tabletop gaming or wargaming, there is subject matter is often horrible. What is war but killing people, in huge numbers and utmost ferocity? All wargames have a very serious element that have to be approached with a little care. This is especially true in historical games, where the people are (or were) “real.” “Moderns” wargamers often wipe squads or platoons off the table, have a laugh, and then reach for the beer and pretzels … not noticing the unsettled silence from the veteran at the end of the table.
Even a completely innocent game like Monopoly, if you look at it a certain way, what’s the aim but ruining people’s livelihoods, or even putting people out their homes? It’s all the worst elements of runaway capitalism. And that’s MONOPOLY, for cryin’ out loud.
Now I’m certainly not saying we should pull these elements out of these games. Madness is a core element in C’thulu gaming and literature, after all. I just agree with Justin that these elements really need to be handled with the care and gravity they deserve.
I would further add, however, that no game design can “determine” the tone with which players will interact with the game. Modern combat games like Force on Force have rules for the heavy, serious, and sometimes heartbreaking factors of modern combat, especially in built-up areas with civilians, evacuating casualties, what happens when a squad fails to evacuate one of its comrades who’s been wounded, etc. But there’s nothing to say the players won’t laugh about it if they’re not taking the game very seriously.
So I would agree with all that’s been said, simply adding that when playing a game that incorporates these issues, it’s also up to the players AS WELL as the designers to approach the subject matter with deserved respect.
That said, I agree with Sam about the game “rewarding” you for accumulating new levels of mental illness, like it was some kind of “rage meter” in an 80s beat-em-up video game. I haven’t played the game in question so I can’t say for certain, but in Force-in-Force, when a US Marine misses the Al-Qaeda insurgent and hits a civilian, killing that eight-year old girl is NOT REWARDED. It’s a devastating event that instantly eliminates the whole fireteam as the men recoil in horror and utterly break down in the face of what’s happened. It’s probably the end of the game. Here, game design helps the players “take it seriously” – as opposed to rewarding players with what should be a horrific event.
For the record, I’m a veteran who really enjoys playing very modern or even present-day wargames. Many other veterans disagree with me on this, and I certainly respect their position. That said, when I put US Marines in the streets of Fallujah, please rest assured I’m taking it damned seriously.
Fascinating post Jim and a really insightful perspective on things.
Thanks for taking the time to write that.
Absolutely no worries, @warzan – enjoy your vacation! 😀
Best bad movies?
1) One-Eyed Monster
2) Iron Sky
3) Southland Tales
4) Punisher: War Zone
5) Howard the Duck.
Enjoy (that may not be the right word!)
I think I’ll be grabbing that Deep-cut Swamp mat! I can see using it for Star Wars Legion, D&D rpg, Tales from the Loop rpg, and Burrows and Badgers! Just to name a few.
The lizard-men Kickstarter has my Attention, very nice looking.
Can’t wait to get the ’emperor’s gaurds’ and that old wrinked-guy for my Star Wars Legion.
Also, on the subject of ‘Merch’, I want Warren’s shirt from this week’s “Warren meets MAT” But I’d like it with a small embroidered OTT logo in the area of the left breast. I wear large colorful shirts, (as I am a bigger guy these days), with a t-shirt underneath and it would be great to have the OTT over shirt and then a t-shirt with the game of the day underneath.
Happy Weekend!
Wooo I won something! Time to figure out how to make Justin do more work then!
@lawnor won again? I call shenanigans!!!!
Seriously though, congratulations to all the winners. Some great prizes that I didn’t get 🙁
I’m impressed anyone noticed that. Its only 5 times in 5ish years. If you enter every competition going, and slip Justin some thank you money I’m sure you’ll win something soon too.
I remember you mentioning your fourth prize after the last one and so the name stuck in my head!
And it doesn’t matter how much I pay Justin – I don’t win competitions as a general rule. It’s the way its been for 38 years, I can’t see it changing anytime soon!
But congratulations again!
*cough* other beasts are available for bribes… just saying
I’ll bear that in mind for next time!
yeay, I won something I think. Congrats to all the other winners and Laughingboy for those fantastic spells. I’ve only managed to put mine together so far
@brennon The archer has his arrow on the correct side . If you hold the bow in your left hand (right handed) the arrow sits on the left side resting on top of the hand. If you hold your bow in your right hand it sits on the right side. This is true for many forms archery from longbow to modern Olympic recurve bows where the bow string is released off the fingers, it causes the arrow to push into the bow and bend around it.
Some Asiatic forms of archery such as Kyudo and most horsebows such as Mongolian bows etc hold the bow string with the thumb. As the thumb bends the opposite way to the fingers, releasing off the thumb has the opposite effect on the arrow. So practitioners of these forms of archery will have the arrow sitting on the other side of the bow and resting on their other thumb.
That mat is a weird one. It looks very pretty, and I can imagine using it for a game of ‘Beyond the Gates of Antares’ or something science fiction / fantasy… But it doesn’t look like swamp to me, tropical or otherwise.
My first thought was like @dignity – that it looks like a zoomed out sea with islands.
For an inland swamp, I think the water is too blue for the depth that it would be with so many shallow islands. I’d expect the water to be muddier or clearer. Not bright blue: it looks the colour of water once you’ve waded out to sea from the beach.
a fab weekender guys congratulations to all the winners.
Woohoo! I won The room 17 prizes! Thanks guys
On the subject of mental illness in games
It is a very relative topic as each of us will be effected by these things in various different ways so it’s hard to generalise any of this, it seems best served to discuss individual situations and share the as that, not a ‘right wrong’ but just as a ‘this is my experience’
This hobby can be so very rewarding in so many ways, @mordiano I’m happy you’ve found a way to hobby with out that affecting you and I can imagine it brings you great relief and happiness to be able to do that
@dracs man I loved that episode of scrubs! I remember being lung enough at the time that not much made think and consider from other people’s point of view but that one hit home even then and really brought to my knees and understood that other lead very different lives in many different ways . Kudos to scrubs the did that story very well indeed
My experience with this actually goes away from gaming but is still relevant I feel. My eldest son is Autistic. This is a very wide spectrum of behaviours and very few autistic people will be the same, they’ll have similar triats between them but even then dealing with those and overcoming these on a day to day basis can very different for each individual. My son is what they call ‘high functioning’ which means in a lot of ways his autism is not obvious to a lot of people from the outside as he doesnt display and outgoing or ‘distruptive’ traits (just mean things like loud noises or outbursts whilst in class or walking around a supermarket etc, not to mean that to be a negative but the best word I could think to describe it). He is also extremely good with Math, numbers and patterns give him great joy and so he is very good at what others consider quite hard things like origami and music, taught himself the piano which is incredible to see (he’s 9 BTW 🙂 )
Anyway so with him still being young he is aware of autism but not completely up on everything about it yet so when there is an opportunity to show and example or use something as reference point to him it can be useful. When watching the latest Power Ranger movie I thought I saw such a moment, the ‘clever’ borderline genius guy was outwardly autistic, they actually said it in the film and I thought “brilliant!” I can show him a positive aspect of what he lives with and get a good place for him to build on and refer to himself…. but no! Yes he was clever in the film however they chose to focus on he clumsiness and for too often he was the butt of all jokes. Yes there are funny moments of life with autism but the jokes didn’t reflect that they made that character come off as the groups clown and were a direct result of his autistic behaviour to the point where I lost this positive role model for my son. These views are of course my own and if others found the film any different they are of course welcome to this post is as I said at the beginning just my experience of this and that is all this is meant to be.
On another note Jurassic World, Grey the youngest lead character is written to be autistic and was going to be outwardly autistic in the film but for some reason they decided not to out that out there and just describe him as ‘awkward’ or ‘quirky’ instead which is very disappointing from Mt point of view as they had a chance to shine a very positive light on something on a very big stage indeed bit nervous very few people if anybody even knows the character is autistic. Here’s some lovely moments we relate to when he asks his brother ‘how many pounds?’ does the island weigh and he actually saves the day with maths… at the end of the film he says ‘we need more teeth’ as a simplfied reflection of we can’t do enough damage weighing up who’s fighting who. Yay! Autism saves the day!
The point is that mental health issues can be used (and are probably best used) by the social giants that are games and films as these are more likely to reach a generation that is not going to pick up a leaflet at the doctors office. That’s why it’s really important that when they do decide to involve these things it needs to be handled with care so it can enhance the game or film that is in as well treat anybody affected by it with awareness and respect
In my humble opinion of course, thanks for reading if you got this far 😉
Step 1: Wake up in the Morning
Step 2: Drink coffee
Step 3: Take Breakfast
Step 4: Do the Gammy Dancing
Thanks BoW and Battlefront!
Happy Weekend to everyone. Just returned from 3 days of great gaming at Historicon, Lancaster, Pennsylvania.
Just to say that your comments about mental ill health were greatly appreciated. I have suffered from depression in the past and may again in the future. The subject was relevant to the discussion and raised intelligently. The more that mental ill health is talked about normally and as part of the general human condition the better for all of us. All of us are at risk of mental illness just as we are with physical illness. So treating each other with kindness and proportionately is setting a good example. Well done for handling it very well. It can be laughed at, and humour is always a good thing in my book. We all should be able to laugh at ourselves. But it is always beneficial when this comes from a position of truth rather than a stereotype. The more educated we all are without getting all po-faced about things the more healthy a society we will have. De-stigmatising mental ill health is a very important issue and something that all of us can do for each other’s benefit whether we suffer from a condition or not.
Thank you
Oooooh I won a thing!!! Yay!
And thank you for saying my name correctly!
I used to be a fighter pilot and my callsign was “Dammit”…….”you got a MIG on your tail Dammit”….”What are you doing Dammit”….etc!
I’m currently working as a Prawn…..but not a very good one, as indeed I imagine you could imagine…..imaginatively?…..I think it’s time for my medication?
Holy love balls, I actually won something thank you very much guys. Congrats to everyone else as well!
With regards to the mental health aspects of the Cthulu game I think there’s an interesting point about how it’s framed. Sam framed it as Becoming more powerful as for acquiring mental conditions; i.e. it gives you a positive for gaining conditions such as OCD. I wonder if perhaps that’s a perception issue because the Dark Heresy RPG also had mental health conditions and madness that you could end up with, most of them were things like “mania”. However I think instead of looking at it as gaining a positive for becoming mad, is it not better to view the madness as the price of power/knowledge thus framing mental health consequences as a negatives effect of power rather power as a positive consequence of mental health? I don’t know whether that’s the case in the game, I’m not really into Cthulu so I haven’t really followed it, this is more a point about the discussion had in the weekender video, nothing more.
@justin Warren tricked you yet again. That Deadzone rule about using blue tac was made up by him. There is no such rule on the 2.0 rules and it probably wasn’t created either for the new Outbreak ruleset. You got played by Warzan! 🙂
Yay, won the signed copy of Deathtrap Dungeon and I can assure you Sam is not I, in disguise. Thanks Guys and sorry for winning this Sam.
That’s ok, I know you’re secretly me in disguise (great job me, no one suspects a thing!)
Cuz I can’t hear, I watched this with captions, hilarious. Core-set became ‘corset’, James was ‘gee em’ or ‘GM’,Amongst many other funny interpretations ha ha, captions also doesn’t tell me when/ who is talking which also adds a nice flavor to the madness
did a list of winners get posted ?
Really looking forward to playing more The Drowned Earth! Solid system!
Wowzas. I don’t win things a lot but if it was going to be anything, the Burrows and Badgers bundle. My brother joked that it is a hook, line and sinker. I agree fully. Haha.
Cheers to everyone!
great show as always guys, Nice to see the MDF kits coming along nicely, but where is that steampunk gattlinger you were sent a while ago??
Ok @dignity, I’ll give it a go, but I hope that @oriskany, will either clarify/correct where I stuff up.
Australia in WW2, war declared, Australia goes to the “mother” country, cos we know their shite in a good fight! (we helped in both boer wars, and WW1, only joking, it was a common held belief in that era that if England as ever in trouble, the rest of the empire/commonwealth would immediately come to her aid.)
Australia trains and deploys in the middle east/north africa and fights there for most/all of that campaign. there is a famous photo of the Australian “Rats” of tobruk playing cricket in the rubble where part of the city held been shelled/bombed, with a couple of guys on watch with bren guns.( sorry, but could not find a link to that picture.)
From there Australian & New Zealand troops headed to Greece & Crete, but this is where the Japanese entered the war and Australia was under threat itself.
Australia sent any available troops to New Guinea (which was an Australian Protectorate at that time)some of the troops sent to defend against the Japanese along the Kokodha trail, were poorly equipped/trained, as they were CMF (Citizens Militia Force, commonly referred to as reservists/territorials, or more commonly by the regular Australian forces as “chocco’s” this came from a comment, that insinuated that the CMF were nothing more than chocolate soldiers who would melt in the heat of battle, this nickname is still used in the ADF between the Reg’s and Reserves. the Regular forces were surprised by the tenacity of the CMF who fight a valiant rear guard action all along the trial where the Japanese were stopped short of Port Morseby. from there, the Australians with support from other allied troops and the Americans pushed the Japanese out of New Guinea and the surrounding islands, and began the island hopping part of the war.
Please @oriskany, please correct the above as I’m sure I have definately glossed over some points, & may have got some wrong.
Also congrats to ALL the winners and the newly “crowned” Hobby God!
Thanks for the mention, @recon63 – nothing “wrong,” but I’ll take the opportunity to add to what you’ve written. 😀
it was a common held belief in that era that if England as ever in trouble, the rest of the empire/commonwealth would immediately come to her aid.
Couldn’t agree more. Churchill says as much in one of his famous speeches. “… And even if, which I do not for a moment believe, this Island or a large part of it were subjugated and starving, then our Empire beyond the seas, armed and guarded by the British Fleet, would carry on the struggle, until, in God’s good time, the New World, with all its power and might, steps forth to the rescue and the liberation of the old.”
So in less elegant language: “If we go down here in the UK, our Commonwealth and Dominion protectorates will keep the fight going until the US finally wakes up and realizes there’s a war on.”
Australia trains and deploys in the middle east/north africa and fights there for most/all of that campaign.
Australian forces were indeed deeply involved all through the Middle East / North Africa campaigns (6th and 9th Divisions most famously). The only time their numbers were really reduced was after the Pacific War started (as you state), and the Australian government demanded that at least some of their troops be returned to Australia to fight against the Japanese in New Guinea, Borneo, the Solomons, and God forbid, Australia itself.
The only thing I would add about the Kokoda Trail is that this is the second big Japanese push at Port Moresby.
For those who may not know, New Guinea is a massive island almost four times the size of Great Britain that more or less stretches along the north shore of Australia, almost like a shield from Japanese invasion from places like Borneo, the Philippines, and Southeast Asia.
Early in the Pacific War, the Japanese put large landings on the north shore of New Guinea. The problem was the tall east-west mountain range and dense jungles that “divided” the island longways and posed a natural barrier against Japanese advance. But if they could take Port Moresby, on the SOUTHERN shore of the island, the door would be wide open for Japanese invasion somewhere in Australia.
The first Japanese try at Port Moresby wasn’t an overland invasion, but a swing around the east end of New Guinea by amphibious attack. They were intercepted by US Navy forces (Fletcher’s Task Force 17, I think), USS Yorktown and Lexington + escort ships, fighting Japanese carriers Zuikaku, Shokaku, and light carrier Shoho in the Battle of the Coral Sea, early May 1942.
Although the Americans actually took more damage, the Japanese saw that the way was NOT clear for their troop ships and the invasion of Port Moresby was turned back. Thus we see an example of a tactical defeat, but operational and strategic victory.
I think it was after this failure that the Japanese started pushing on their second choice, an overland invasion toward Port Moresby along the Kokoda Trail. This was later in the summer and early fall of 1942, and again the Japanese were stopped, this time by the bravery of Australian and local New Guinea troops.
Unfortunately, this battle gets very little focus in American histories because it’s taking place at the same time as Operation Watchtower and the US Marine Corps invasion of Guadalcanal (August 7 1942, extending well into early 1943).
