Warhammer: The Old World’s Fate Hangs In The Balance – Will It Appease The Fans? #OTTWeekender
October 20, 2023 by avernos
It's OTTWeekender Time! We discuss the news from Games Workshop for Warhammer: The Old World. The fate of this game hangs in the balance and will it be enough to appease the fans, both new and old? Are people simply going to be returning to this game out of nostalgia?
With a look at some impressive new Bretonnian miniatures that are going to be released in the early portion of 2024, could this be a return to the good old days or has the time of Warhammer Fantasy Battles now passed. Should we all just be moving on to other wargames rather than dwelling on the past?

Yay happy Friday weekenders Otters an COGz.
should that not be brain matter beige for the colour guys.
Happy weekend, it’s good to see the Brettonians being the focus of the return to the old world. They were my army in 3rd and 4th edition. All though I had the Perry Brettonians.
I have to say I really dislike the helmets of the Brettonians. Yes historical Helmet’s had head pieces, but from my knowledge these were only used in tournaments, when they were showing off, they were totally impractical in battle. So whilst I understand this is fantasy I would cut all this frills off if I was to ever get these.
I liked the Old World, but it’s taking GW so long to release it…
Bam to the max
fab terrain coming out.
It would definitely be fun painting up those alien plants, I’d break out the alcohol inks for those
Lol.

fab show guy’s.
Love that new terrain, if only there was some sort of contest to use it for…. ? ?
Great show again this week. Was this the “Gerry´s terrain show” ? All the trees and space world terrain looks interesting through with some small magnets.
Is the overgrown world come later ? The craters could also be used as pits of something, depending on how you paint them.
the overgrown world is coming at the same time as the others, it’s why I have a set already from the KSer. It just happened that mantic sent us the other 3 sets as the prize. So they’re all on the pre-order right now
Like most of GWs releases I’ll get all excited and caught up in the hype, but then something will smack some sense into me, usually the price.
Some great looking terrain.
Without a doubt I will be buying Bretonnians! There will be an element of falling for FOMO but it was one of those early Warhammer Battle armies that you build up from the initial game box full of knights and as you start to save up for the more expensive specialist units like grail knights and questing knights, they get pulled. This has meant for years I’ve had to really resist the FOMO via eBay where these OOP minis can only be found at incredibly inflated prices (I have succumbed on occasion!). I expect the new releases will be more expensive relatively to the original releases, but still they hopefully will scupper the online scalpers… until GW pull them again! Now don’t get me on to Praetorians for W40K ?.
Absolutely agree. I too have been tempted by OOP ebay shenanigans.
Build us another (alien) shrubbery! This time with a little path down the middle
and one should be a little higher than the other so you get a nice two level effect!
Fantastic weekender as usual!
My intro to WHFB was with the 5th edition box featuring Bretonnians and Lizardmen.
Come back with Bretonnians is just awesome!
Happy weekend and Happy Weekender to all
SF terrain outstanding. Weekender gives away so much nice stuff!
And they did not mention MoonStone (award winning).
I was thinking about it under the table while the others were talking about 40K
Anything that makes getting terrain on the table easier sounds good to me.
That Mantic sci fi terrain crate is great! Thats why I backed it on the KS. And it just arrived Monday.
belated happy weekender…..obviously very excited for the upcoming Warp minis Kickstarter
The Bretons look great, but have no intention of getting into this. Now if GW had done this on 12mm….
Good showcase of the new Mantic terrain crate Gerry.
Those neoprene area terrain templates look really nice too.
an so handy, I made may own area terrain, like most people, out of 5mm MDF and it is great but jaysus it’s heavy if you want to being a forest table it’s a slab of wood you have to shift
I loved the original Bretonians. I desperately wanted their squires because they looked so detailed and so interesting, but alas I had no money as a child and wasn’t fully into wargaming. They had mounted and unmounted versions and I still considered finding them on eBay and see if they survived the End Times flambé protest atrocities of 2015.
The Mantic Terrain looks awesome. I still have the WW2 Mantic scatter terrain that I picked up in Warlord Games sale, perhaps Terrain Fest is the time to dig that stuff out? Or plough on with other bits? Time will tell. Great show. See ya Sunday. ?
Happy weekender all! Nice to see mantic getting involved in terrain fest
Nice one as always!
I hope the old world is good but I’ve invested in KOW now.
Love the look of the Mantic alien trees. Can’t think of anyone else who does anything similar. Loads of great kits for Walking Dead or Dungeon romps too.
Mixed feelings about the Bretonnians. I like some bits whilst at the same time feel really put off by others. I think it’s the helmets on the newer models and how much more elaborate they are compared to the older designs.
I am looking forward to seeing new Tomb Kings though. Sorry Gerry.
I wonder how many will skip along to fireforge for their Bretonions….
Great fun lads love to all – Shay, how’s the ACW coming on? (Only took me 20 odd years to move them on so that’s your target!)
Just popped along to fireforge, has @warzan seen their mdf stuff? There are some nice looking 15mm siege engines.
I handed over bases to him this week so it can only be a matter of time
I love the Mantic Terrain Crates, and would love to win the new Sci Fi versions!
Surely that admech chap will use the hoover attachment from his groinal socket to pick up his rifle – like Londo cheating at cards!
it doesn’t have any…appendages
Mantic’s terrain crate do look very flexible!
Nice one 🙂
Absolutely love that Deathworld vegetation set. Amazing stuff from Mantic. Not sure how I’ve missed those but they wil certainly be on the list.
I know that I’d never play Doomsong, but I bet I’d have a blast reading the rulebook and campaign.
Great episode chaps. Really like the striking scorpions and will be getting them.
Looking forward to see what resin goodies appear for beastmen as they are on the old world list as some great characters in some of the old lists. Hoping plastic pestigors and khornegors.
However, a poor episode if being ranked by moonstone, model trains (though a tenuous link with the terrain crate) and AI.
The 3DBreed link doesnt work
Love the Mantic stuff
Gotta say, I absolutely love the new Mantic Terrain Crate. I backed for a mat and the plants – they’re definitely where it’s at. I was cajoled into getting the battlefield ruins by our kid who plays 40k, but in Hindsight I wish we had gone for the alien ruins as I feel like they’re a nice if complement for the alien jungle.
I’m not really sure why increasing the base size is going to unbalance Warhammer, provided the points balance out (obviously there’s no guarantees of that). An Orc and an Empire State Trooper always had very similar profiles – humans having a higher initiative (4 vs 3), Orcs having higher toughness (likewise, 4 vs 3). So magical items and charging aside, humans would strike first but have a lower chance of wounding the Orcs. Orcs would strike second with a higher chance to wound but with less attacks to start with due to taking a few casualties. So basic troops were always pretty balanced from a stats perspective, so I always assumed that the base size was for no reason other than the size of the model. I don’t really think it’s a big deal, it’s certainly practical to have everything having a standardised frontage; much like Kings of War does. As long as that’s been considered by the game designers, it will be fine*. From a modelling perspective, it’s a massive improvement (because trying to pose the fucking halberdiers so they lined up properly on 20mm bases – nightmare).
Discussions about base sizes aside, I am kind of excited for the new Bretonnians. I don’t think I will be getting into The Old World. I would much rather play Saga or Kings of War. But Bretonnia is my Warhammer nostalgia. I wanted a Bret army as far back as 1990, but I could never afford one because they never had any plastic miniatures and by the time they did, I’d kind of stopped playing fantasy. When I came back to Warhammer after my university and general life enforced hiatus, I went for Bretonnia. And I waited for years, all the way to the eventual cancellation of WHFB, for a new army book and a few new models – like foot knights. But they never came. And my Bretonnia army, that was themed on the kingdom I played in a LARP system, although technically fully painted, retains “gaps” to this day. And so I suspect that I shall be buying a few of these models as well as a couple of boxes of the peasants. The army will probably never be played, but I will finally feel like my Bretonnia army is “finished”

I really love the new Bretonnians
I was having no interest at all in the Old World stuff, but when you start to see them all ranked up…nostalgia starts to hit. It has to be Goblin Green all the way though. Green tablecloth with lumpy bits where you’ve used various kitchen items to make hills.
The skitarri mini is great but needs to be modelled wading through a swamp or something similar
There is one thing from the terrain crate that I need and that’s the standing lamp. Tempted to get the whole box just for that
happy weekend
thanks to Gerry @lawnor ive now bittem the bullet with Moonstone…
sorry @lawnor got my hairy beasts mixed up i meant @avernos its all his fault!
I regret nothing
Buy multi award winning Moonstone, square bases are wrong and don’t use minis in roleplay I guess?
ROUND bases are wrong! Wheres the edit button?
so close but at least we can identify the imposter
Well finally caught up o show, busy Friday night and actually gaming yesterday.
Like the Terrain Crate, Alien Forest was cool, GW stuff pretty much turned me off.
The Bretonnian’s look amazing, but I’m still reeling from the steady 10th edition rule and cards and app updates whiplash.
I hope those Bretonnians aren’t all forge world prices! Those knights look perfect for some Lion/Dragon Rampant King Arthur wargaming, especially the old 50s I think film with all the Heraldry to base things on. Just needs a Green Knight.
Love the character and style of the old world but always felt that came through more for me in the specialist / skirmish size games rather than massed battle rank & flank. Although I’m looking forward to it’s return I think it’s more for bringing back older models, freshening up others and hopefully more art / lore than the game system itself.
throwing cars is so unfair!!!! yes looking at you Paul (Po!)
Old world stuff is looking good, interested to see where they’re going to go with it
Mantics terrain crate is great, Linda regretting not grabbing the ruins set when it was on Kickstarter.
“If you go down to the woods today,
you’re sure of a big surprise,
for everywhere ……. !”
The whole thing is flattened, nothing left but a deserted village loose furniture and some inedable mushrooms.
There will be war.
I can’t help but feel a bit pessimistic about the Old World. GW prices are not conducive to mass battles anymore, the project has taken absolute ages to get off the ground, and the new foot knights are really busy.
You don’t give me anything! There, I said it.
Unless I win a prize, then I’ll edit this to say you give me terrain.
If you want grand battles in the Old World, why not just play the superior Warmaster?
Seriously, the idea of people being excited to play WHFB again just baffles me.
I was looking at 3dBreed minis recently for adding some more female gunslingers to my collection but the new KS looks too good to miss. The link above is broken but a quick search for Plains of Terror finds it. Really should get back to painting up that table’s worth of a western terrain, if only there had been something to encourage me to do that for the last few weeks…
Oooh, look at me engaging with the content. I swear I’m going to catchup with my feed to watch the Weekender on the weekend one day…
Happy bump day!
I’ve been painting my pledge for Mantic’s terrain crate, the alien flora box, could’nt afford to go for all the boxes at the time… I really love the stuff and thanks to Gerry for showing off the stuff i now want!
Thanks for the show guys!
TerrainCrate? That must mean Deadzone is life, STILL!
