Weekender: Walking Dead Winners, Blood Bowl Returns & Mythic Battles Breaks $1M
November 19, 2016 by brennon
Welcome to The Weekender. We've somewhat recovered from The Walking Dead: All Out War Boot Camp and will be diving into our thoughts on the game and much more besides!
Deep Cut Mats
We take another look at one of the Deep Cut Studios Mats that we've been using for a Battle Report this week.
Their Beach was fantastic and certainly helped us plan out a great scenario for use in our Bolt Action game.
Catching Up & Competition Winners
Make sure to dive back into what we've been doing this week with the new series of Antares Rising leading us into this Sci-Fi world.
We also have a Wolsung Let's Play that you just have to watch where we switch up the sides and have both Justin & John playing with factions they wouldn't normally use.
Claim Your Prizes Here
Also, we have some competition winners! Keep watching to find out who won the Battle Systems Shanty Town AND all of the goodies from The Walking Dead Boot Camp.

Walking Dead Boot Camp Thoughts
We unbox the Kickstarter edition of the game that the Boot Camp members were able to play around with and give our thoughts on the weekend, the game itself, and what plans we might have for future events.
It was a lot of fun playing the game and we can't wait to get it down on the tabletop again. Did the Boot Camp inspire you to pick up The Walking Dead: All Out War?
Kickstarter Time
It's time to get some updates!
- Battle Systems Sci-Fi II Terrain - We catch up with the campaign in its last hours and see what has infested it!
- Mythic Battles: Pantheon - They're past the $1 Million mark and Bellerophon joins the fight.
- Way Of The Fighter - Old school arcade fighting on the tabletop!
- Undertown Infinity Terrain - Head to the seedier side of the city with your Infinity games.
We reckon that's some good projects to sink your teeth into.
What will you be playing this weekend?

Happy Weekend!
Happy Saturday
I was looking at those Fireforge armies to make a Brotherhood army for Kings of War. Those knights are sexy as hell!
Congrats to the winners. Brilliant prizes!!!!
Happy weekend!!
Sophia Lives!
@avernos best 6 points i ever spent
Not while I’m around!
Robert Kirkman only said the aliens were behind the zombie apocalypse to sell the comic because no company would publish a comic just about zombies. He even later did a joke issue where the aliens were in it. I guess the lie paid off for him in the end! LOL
Mythic Battles: Pantheon has been the best KS participation experience I have had so far – Leo on KS Live and Jake Thornton as the constant endlessly patient Voice of Olympus monitoring and responding to comments all day.
Gorgeous minis, including the monsters and gigantic ones like Atlas, Scylla and more to come!
And not forgetting the RPG version with Black Book Editions!
Testify!
That deep cut mat is perfect for Blood and Plunder
I have evil plans for a set of Blood Bowl Orks. ‘Ard Boyz, anyone?
It’s the Weekend! They’re back!
BloodBowl? Check out the demo game available now at many local GW stocking FLGS!
@dignity.A couple of suggestions for you to brush up on your Greek Mythology:
The Greek Myths: The Complete and Definitive Edition by Robert Graves. >750 pages of well written content… Or…
Sticker Greek Myths (Sticker Books) by Lisa Jane Gillespie
😉
(I know – if you can handle series of Black Library Heresy books you can gandle the first!)
In the Greek Tradgedy the Gods get involved and start helping out each side. Achillies fights a River God at one stage and was helped by a fire God. Achillies Armour was made by the God Hephistus.
The Greatest tradgedy was Achillies pain. He was sulking in his tent after having an arguement with Aggamemnon when his cousin Petroculus dresses up in his armour and leads his troops into combat with Hector. Hector kill Petrocullis and Achillies kills Hector. Achillies takes captives, sacrifices them on his barrow but doesn’t find peace. He fights men, Gods and kills a lot of people and finds no peace. He kills his cousins killer and desecreates his body and doesn’t find peace.
He finds peace and inner balance by forgiving Hector and respecting Priam who sneaks into his tent and kneels at/kisses his feet begging for his son to be burried. That’s just the Illiad set during the Trojan War but it’s one of the most famous trajedies out there.
Also the men were fighting with Bronze Swords, Bronze Spears and maybe helmets and cowhide shields nothing like the stuff in the movie.
Post Boot Camp Weekender! Yay! Wasn’t the Walking Dead Boot Camp just the best? Yes, yes it was. 🙂
Love the Deep Cut Map Beach assault map – I can see it being great for a range of gaming scales. Their maps are not so easy to get where I live but certainly something I will save up for one day.
Well Justin and I are just as ecstatic about the new Blood Bowl release. Unfortunately @dignity I am a born and bred Skaven player -Mwhahahahahahahaha! I am looking forward to reviving ‘Snikkers Skitterers & Snorters’ – my old scruffy, schizophrenic, warpstone snorting, scallywag skaven team!
…anyway…
How about those Walking Dead winners? Congrats you lucky chaps (and/or chapesses).
And the Antenociti kickstarter is awesome stuff, look forward to these hopefully ending up in the webstore. 🙂
Helen was married to Menelaus, king of Sparta and brother of Agamemnon. Agamemnon was married Helen’s sister, Clytemnaestra, who killed Agamemnon when he got back from Troy. Such was Helen’s beauty that all her suitors pledged an oath to aid the eventual winner should anyone every try and steal Helen. Hence they all went to Troy to get her back.
The Iliad is about Achilles’ coming to terms with his mortality. He’s from the generation of semi-divine heroes, but he has a mortal life-span. The Greek heroes compensated for this with kleos (stories told about their deeds), arete (their virtues and acknowledgement of them by others), and time (the way one’s arete is honoured). The taking of Briseis by Agamemnon is an intolerable stain on Achilles’ time (as giving Chryseis back was on Agamemnon’s), and this causes Achilles to withdraw from the fighting. It is the death of Patroclus that brings him back into the fighting, even though he knows it will mean he will die young. Throughout the epic (not tragedy 😉 ), Achilles examines and rejects kleos, arete, and time, but still cannot escape them. At the end of the poem, he realises that mortals are doomed for an unhappy lot given them by the gods.
Happy Weekend! I just took the kickstarter plunge and backed Mythic Battles! I am so excited 🙂
Welcome aboard :). Be sure to tune into Leo’s live video stream on KS this evening 🙂
tha twas @nakchak idea of sophia holding shotgun. and I believe she died?
Leo is good, he likes teasing the backers a lot with art, minis and what might come later.
/cry I never win, well done to all the winners and well done on a cracking bootcamp.
Great to hear everyone had a great Boot Camp and that the game not only held up but showed a huge amount of potential too.
Glad to have Bloodbowl making a fresh appearance which will fingers crossed see all the range overhauled. I used to enjoy playing this and will be looking at picking it up to start playing a great League game again.
Good to see another game get great support and funding on KS, I wasn’t part of the Conan one and was wondering if they fulfilled it on time? I always worry with very successful KS if the sheer volume will see them have to delay or run over time before all the backers have their pledges or worse see them on the shelves before the backers have them.
I really liked how you adapted the deep cut studios mat with the sand to give it a more realistic feel.
Looking forward to the XLBS tomorrow.
Damn when you said wolf and then paused I thought id won something :\
Thanks so much guys, definitely did a little dance when you announced me as the winner!! Once again great video, looking forward to the conspiracy theory tomorrow
Holy flippin moly. Congrats!
I wondered how the servers were holding up. BoW definitely felt like there were a lot of folk tuning in.
One of my favourite books is the Patrocleia, which is part of the Iliad.
As i recall, Helen ( of Troy, and Sparta, and perhaps even Egypt ) is worth fighting over, and declaring war for, not simply because of honour or beauty, but because she was the immortal daughter of Zeus, and as such brought with her the promise ( or at least potential ) of immortality for her husband. Bear in mind that the best all but a few greeks ( including the greatest heroes ) hoped for was to go to Hades after death and be remembered in song.
@noyjatat the Conan Kickstarter was pretty late. The project funded in February 2015 and was only delivered last month. It was the first Kickstarter for those guys and there were a few hiccups with the production schedule. This time, I am much more confident it will be dispatched in better time rather than the rather over optimistic estimate of October 2015 for Conan.
They have allowed a date of December 2017 which is far more realistic.
I agree that the inclusion of Jake Thornton (Quickworthy) has really helped sell this project. It’s a great product anyway, but Jake has really helped to bring it to life with his updates and I suspect input behind the scenes.
for the undertown that giffiti is from a decal sheet than actual on the building
Love the beach mat. I would play Halo ground battles on it. Would love to see a load of Warthogs driving onto the beach to kill some aliens.
Happy Weekend 🙂
I missed @dignity butchering history 🙂
No love for the Shadows of Brimstone kickstarter from you guys? It’s a great game, going back for another KS. It’s a bit stalled ATM and could use some community hype!
You can Mech vs Mech battle today. You can use those 1/35 scale mechs and use Battletech Alpha Strike Rules or simply pick up the Alpha Strike Rule book and some lance packs. Better yet, invite the guys from Catalyst Games to come for a weekend to show how it is played. Honestly, Battletech has all the mech battles you like.
I have been looking into getting a beach battle mat. You would be surprised how many scenarios you can get out of it. Just for World War II there is of course Normandy and the island hopping portion of the Pacific. As mentioned there is Operation Sealion, but you could also go with Americans vs. Vichy French in Morocco. That’s just off the top of my head.
Great beach mat. Man, beach boards are actually pretty tough to do. Between Normandy, Pacific, and Sea Lion – like @warzan says, man, it is tough. Possible, I’ve done it quite a few times. But they’re definitely not easy. A mat like this would really help!
Sea Lion games for a Let’s Play? Where could we *cough* have possibly *cough cough* gotten that idea? 😀 Awesome, very cool, very much appreciate it. 😀
You know, I coulda sworn I mentioned that they are doing it because of the article series!!! But watching it back it looks like one of the rare ‘in the head but not out the mouth moments!’
Sorry about that mate!
Absolutely no worries, @warzan , I really was kidding around. The Sea Lion connection I honestly think is so clear it didn’t need a mention. You really are correct about gaming beach assaults, they are NOT easy to build on a table but definitely worth the work. Mats like this will really help, especially if you can put things underneath the inland side to represent the change in elevation that you always see on beaches, especially on “bluff” beaches like Omaha, Sword, and Folkestone. 😀
I’m sitting on a Fort Lauderdale beach as I type this, I think just the kind of beach a DZC beach assault would be best for. Water, about 200 yards of sand, a low sea wall, and immediate coastal roads and tall (20+ story) resort hotels and condos, perfect to bring crashing down in a DZC assault! 🙂
Regard Deep Cut Studios, I think it a tragedy their cloth mats don’t get more coverage. The neoprene mats are great but the cloth versions are so easy to store. They fold down into an A4 clear zip bag and our gaming club stores over 30 in a single.plastic tote. Portable and machine washable. So damn good.
I’m thinking of ordering couple of mats and you made me consider should I go for the cloth type. How easily it is to get flat on a surface if you store it folded?
“I may have to find an ass to sink a boot into…” Brilliant
Out of the amazing @dignity quotes, that may be the best. 🙂 🙂 🙂
Happy weekend!
Thanks @warzan for showing us another great mat, do keep it up!
Oh boy, Mythic Battles is getting harder to resist! My friend is already backing it but, i doubt he’ll be able to get all the addons so, i think i’ll help out! This month is gonna cost me a lot of cash, since i also backed Battle Systems 😉
See you guys tomorow
Congrats to the winner and good show as usual
@warzan I recommend you read the Troy Series of Books by David Gemell
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Troy_Series
Brennon check out schildschmie.de they produce flags and
transfers for game of thrones. The transfers are for fireforge
and Perry miniatures. You can change the fireforge starterset into
a game of thrones army.
My walking dead set is currently sat in the post office and I can’t pick it up until Wednesday, on my next day off….then it’s getting prepped and painted ASAP…..
Happy Weekend!
BLOOD BOWL!!!! pre-ordered practically the instant it went up on the GW site, time to dust off the Dwarfen Grudgebeareres ;D
The Knight Walker looks awesome definitely a good fit for K47, maybe as an advanced prototype that needs to be defended whilst it powers up and even then there’s a chance it will break down at the least opportune moment, but whilst it’s active, it would wreak utter havoc upon its opponents.
The Walking Dead Boot Camp looks like it was an absolute hoot.
Mythic Battles: Pantheon, They’ve done it! ONE MILION DOLLARS! O_O Wow, I haven’t seen a Kickstarter campaign do that before the minis look unbelievably awesome, Onward! to Mt Olympus!
I think I may have used too many exclamation marks in this comment, lol
Great show guys 😀
That beach mat blew my mind. I had NO idea that that was real sand on the mat until they started moving it away to show the texture. 🙂
I love the coverage you do on all things hobby from kickstarter to rules. Can’t get enough.
a great weekender guys. congratulations to all the winners.
Thank you so much you wonderful people! I’m even more excited about going to Mantic Open Day next weekend and meeting Ronnie now! Definitely Jammie danced and thank you again Beasts of War and Mantic
I just want the plastic cars from the walking dead to use in the Marvel Miniature Game
Congratulations to the winners some fantastic prizes there.
I really like the look of those mechs, don’t think I’d actually have a use for them but still.
That Sarissa Precision kit looks fantastic I can see that fitting into so many systems,I think that’s the beauty of these mdf kits, they just have so many uses when you actually look at them.
Come along and read a bit of the Iliad in Belfast! 🙂
https://classicalassociationni.wordpress.com/2016/09/28/public-reading-of-homers-iliad-in-translation-at-mcclay-library-qub/
How awesome would it be to do Caesar’s landing on that seaboard mat – I can think of so many cool pictures of the Roman landing in Britain, with the standard bearer leaping into the surf and the General watching from the prow…
Grand Manner do some awesome Roman Galleys – you know that the Irish seized the Isle of Man from the Romans in the fifth century AD – that would be a cool battle scenario 🙂
Battlemats are definitely the way of the future.
I was sure I was going to win something from the walking dead weekend but no, not me again!!
Can’t wait to see what Operation Sea Lyon looks like on that may and table.
Speaking of competitions, does anyone know what happened with hobbyween?
dat jammy dancing tho
@warzan regarding heroic combat in a historical Roman setting, whilst the Romans are renown for large armies and it is easy to imagine that their generals sat at the back pointing at the enemy saying “Tell those troops to kill those barbarians over there”, and they often did, they also regularly got involved in combat too. In the Republican days a number of generals got involved in single combat with their counterpart. In the Imperial Ages a number of Roman Emperors were killed in fighting or had previously been generals renown for getting into combat. Towards the end of the empire most Emperors and generals kept at least small retinues of bodyguards made up of veterans (rather than large regiments like the Praetorian Guard of the Early empire) and regularly got in clashes with barbarians and rivals for the throne. Small skirmishes in a Roman setting is very plausible.
I want to get into Blood Bowl again, I was heavily into it before. I worked closely with the BBRC to help create rules and playtest. But the way GW treated the entire community through a stretch there still burns…I just don’t think I can give them any of my money after they treated so many of us the way that they did. I just lost all respect for them.
@warzan biggest draw for me on Artharian Saga expansion is Roman battleboard so a way to field romans without a giant force
