I was surprised that Star Wars Imperial Assault was not on the list for board games.
It was released the year before so wasn’t eligible.
@redben, Star Wars Imperial Assault was released on December 15 2014, which is within the nomination eligibility date range of December 1, 2014 to November 30, 2015.
Did you nominate it?
I did.
It was released at Essen Spiel in October 2014.
There were a couple hundred advanced copies sold, but the release date is listed as December.
http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Star_Wars:_Imperial_Assault_(Fantasy_Flight_Games)
The criteria was set as the moment a member of the general public could buy the final version of the game. It was mainly set for minis games which aren’t always easy to pin a release date down for, but in this instance it meant as members of the general public could buy IA at Essen Spiel then it fell outside the timeframe of the awards.
happy weekender
Happy Weekend!
I think they stopped producing the A-10 because the damn things just won’t die!
Always wondered though, I know they made a 3-barrelled version of the A-10’s cannon for use in an external gunpod on the A-16 variant of the F-16, but (apart from the mildly radioactive nature of the ammo) could never work out why no-one’s ever thought to mount one (or even two!) of these in a tank chassis?
A-10 fun-fact 1: they can only fire the gun in short bursts because continuous fire generates so much recoil it causes the plane to stall. Yes, the only weapon guaranteed to take an A-10 out of the sky is it’s own gun…..
A-10 fun-fact 2: always vulnerable to faster moving aircraft, in the mid 90’s the A-10 had a software upgrade that allowed pilots to use the Avenger cannon to engage air-to-air targets. the very definition of messy- milk bottle-sized rounds designed to cut through the thickest tank armour (and anything for about a klick behind it) vs fast moving aircraft designed for speed not durability….
(I may have had kind of a thing for the Warthog when I was younger…)
The USAF keeps trying to get rid of it because it isn’t a sexy fighter. But even the U.S. Congress recognizes the value of it and blocks them. USAF should just let the army take the A-10, but they won’t because fixed-wing is their piece of the pie (pig trough).
Happy Saturday, great weekender. Wow I got a mention on the show with my chicken rider, awesome!
Cant wait for the XLBS tomorrow
🙂
Hey now, I didn’t lie 🙁 I give all credit to Romain. I’m happy people liked my Dreamer crew, it will be awhile until I can find an excuse to use those paint pots again :). The teddy bear is just “Teddy”. That particular model was a special edition “Miss” model, Miss Ery.
And btw, A-10 retirement was just delayed again.
‘Tis the weekend… Hurrah!
Now how many of you immedfiately thought of this video when you heard Allesio mention “spider-dog”?
https://youtu.be/YoB8t0B4jx4
The A-10 is flown, mostly, by the Air National Guard, amd will never be retired. Nothing in the us toe can do what it does. The top Air force brass thought that fast jets could do the job of ground support, but the A-10 is famous for its long time over target time.
Fantasy Flight Games have added to the star wars universe. The Imperial Raider corvette is their creation.
I can not wait for Labyrinth! Happy weekend everyone.
I VOLUNTEER AS TRIBUTE!!!!! (for board-game purposes only….)
I am so unbelievably excited about the Labyrinth board game. The sculpts look amazing. I’m definitely picking that up.
I can’t help but picture this scenario:
Warren: “Justin! You remind me of the babe.”
Justin: “Huh?”
Warren: “The babe with the power.”
Justin: “What are you talking about?”
Warren: “The power of voodoo.”
Justin: “…what?”
Warren: “Never bloody mind.”
I’m no fan of Labyrinth and even I’m interested in the game based on those sculpts. The opposite is true with Terminator.
I wasn’t expecting much from the Terminator game but bought the entry level one at 20 quid figuring the minis alone were worth the money. I was hugely surprised by just how good and how thematic the rules are. Of all the things I got in the last two months, and I got loads – AvP, Sedition Wars, Deadzone, Dragon Rampant, Battlegroup, loads of minis for various systems – I’ve spent more time on Terminator than I have all the others combined. It’s a genuinely good game.
Love the New drone units and baby spiders… thats a buy for me…… As for Hunger games I was hoping for a 28mm skirmish game… so I could kill Children ..!!! Just joking
Awesome looking those labrynth miniatures, I will buy the game just to paint them, they are some of those childhood iconic characters we 80`s children won´t resist.
@warzan – FFG have had input to the Star Wars universe…
The Imperial Raider, which is now in X-Wing and Armada, is a co-design between FFG and Lucasfilm.
I will definitely be buying those Labyrinth models in large scale if they release them. Hopefully they would continue to release further models from the film as I would love to eventually have enough variety to field a chess set as well as play games.
Why didn’t River Horse get the AVP licence… They seem so much better prepared than Prodos ever were.
Oh and how the hell did AVP make it into the best board game final 10 when the majority of the backers didn’t see it in 2015?? (and still haven’t seen it yet).
It was eligible because it was released to retail within the time period, and enough members of the community nominated it to get it into the top ten. Simple as that.
Terminator was hugely surprising that it plays so good. AvP is an absolute shambles, both in terms of the launch of the game and the rules themselves. The rulebook is one of the worst I’ve read. Marines get a bonus in close combat against aliens and predators when fighting in familiar terrain!? Has anyone at Prodos actually watched the movies!? River Horse would have nailed an AvP game.
This Glacier King looks totally awesome! He tanks the tanks 😉
Not a big fan of the Terminator stuff, but those Labyrinth models are exceptional, looking forward to that one. Hunger games has massive potential too, glad to see River Horse going form strength to strength.
Great video again guys, thanks.
Liking that you’ve embiggened Ben. Tremendous stuff!
More relevant comments later. Possibly.
Yes, he’s better at visible size. 😎
Relics section was great……Gavin is so handsome….. Im typing this of my own free will……..I am not under duress……..
But seriously, Alessio’s Waterloo game is on my ‘to buy’ list and I cant wait for the relics stuff to go to retail…..Want to expand my Nuem.
Sounds like some good stuff coming up for us Beasts of Water Backstagers. Pass the scuba gear.
Hey, you know what’s a great solo game? Paaaaaaathfinder. It’s not a game you can chuck in a bag and carry with you though, so while its a club favourite for coop and my go-to game when I’m home alone, I’ve started to get back into the LotR LCG. It’s hard as nails but you can at least fit everything you need for one session into a big deck box. The same is true of Shadowrun Crossfire but somehow Catalyst made a game that is even harder than LotR!
It truly sad to know David Bowie is gone. Shame he will never get a chance to see his likeness in the Goblin King model.
Those Labyrinth figures are incredible.
Great show.
John, excellent job on the mountain troll!
On the A-10 the USAF has always placed the job of close air support at a lower priority compared to it’s strategic arms such as Missile, Bomber, and Transport components. This is just military politics and resource allocation. It is sad as the A-10 is one of the best platforms they have ever had. Why it makes sense to the war fighters to simply make some new ones there are no fat cat deals or development projects to be had in doing something like that. You have to feed the military industrial complex therefor you have to develop something new. Sorry for the rant 🙂
Really enjoying these, I just say their becoming a regular weekend activity tuning in for these.
So, excited about Labyrinth minis cause I’ve always loved that quirky style… speaking of which awesome relics puppets!! As soon as disposable income is a thing again I’m buying a bucket load of those!!
Labyrinth! Are you kidding me? This is awesome news guys. Thank you so much for breaking this story for us. I am super excited to purchase this game in June. You’re right, it was such tragic news of David’s passing, and I do hope the approval of the models (Goblin King etc.) will get approved.
I really have fallen in love with the information you guys have to share with us, Beasts of War. I literally cannot see myself not having the backstage pass from here on in. In it for the long hall without a second thought. Backstage for the WIN!
I’m really, really going to be needing those labyrinth models.
Great show, i even watched it twice…………….
Looking forward to “Labyrinth”, as i wife was and still is a big fan of the film and David Bowie. I know she was very up set when the news told of “Mr Bowie`s” passing, so when the game is released i`m looking at getting two copies. One to play and the other to paint the figure`s for her to put on display in her glass cabinet…………
great show, just back from a 9th age tournament (largest in UK to date), no one rage quit the game
I love how that truck resembles a 1980s Ford Ranger.
Always great to see Alessio talking about his latest projects , his excitement is contagious . Going to have to pick up Terminator now and Labyrinth when released . From what I recall from my model aircraft years , the A-10 has a titanium bath tub shaped armoured cockpit liner for the protection of the pilot . It also can land with the wheels in the up position as they still hang below the fuselage , so an easy belly landing on tarmac. Also the engines and IRC both tail wings ( maybe main wings ? ) are inter changeable to either side of the aircraft so its easier to repair from other damage A-10s .
Thanks for a another solid show guys! Took me 2 days to finish it because of work! Now i’ll go catch up to the XLBS!
Great show guys!
I have to agree with @dignity the new Terminator stuff stands out.
I hope to see relic guys at salute this year to have a demo game. Models look interesting.
Do not even think of letting Alessio create some rules for any 40K Chaos Lord. 40K Chaos has still not recovered from the last time he gutted them, and I will not yet forgive until Chaos has been reworked – and maybe not even then.
It will be interesting to see how Hunger Games does. It’s a huge IP obviously, but not necessarily one that will appeal to wargamers. It’s also not immediately obvious what they will focus on. Will it be about playing one or more of the main characters in skirmish combat, perhaps inside the games themselves? (Pick a child character and fight to the death?) Or will you lead armies against the city people?
I’m not the target audience of the books or films, which I should state before saying that I wasn’t very impressed with them (the first 3 films anyway, I haven’t seen the last or read the books). Not that I object to kids enjoying them – and better that they have fun reading than don’t have anything that inspires them to read – but I’m not sure how they’ll make the game a success. Getting the IP could turn out to be a poisoned challice…
