Happy weekend
When Warren first came on the screen I thought WOW he’s lost weight , then when he said I was on my honeymoon…….. well it became self explanatory LOL
Happy Weekend!
Good morning? It’s Friday night!
Saturday night here 😛
Looks cool, seems like a good board game adaption of the PC game.
The Fall/Autumn Multi System WW2 Campaign Idea is at 1:20:45
No dedicated time code!!! Me and @oriskany will have to apply the thumb screws to @lance 😉
This is gonna be an epic project. Thanks very much for letting me help. Operation Zeus 1943 will be a worthy “prequel” to the Lloydoslavian War of 1985! 😀
Help??? You may not have realised it but you are the main man lol 😉
@oriskany if it is only half as good as the History of Lloydoslavia it will be a great read. I totally believe in your abilities 😉
Thanks, Warren, @setesch , and @rasmus – and Happy Birthday! 😀
Yeah, a few months ago Warren was pitching the idea for a WW2 campaign, and on a weekender episode asked for ideas. It sounded like we wanted a campaign setting that started with a basis in WW2 history, but wasn’t “bound” by any real history going forward.
People at the time were also expressing something of a “been there, done that” feel to WW2, so we really wanted something new.
All that said, we didn’t want to swing too far afield to where it became “Weird War 2” – we wanted it to be grounded on a historical baseline so players could leverage the WW2 armies they already had available.
I also thought we could maximize our chances for potential player participation by including as many factions as possible. For example, I know a lot of people have big Eastern Front armies (like Warren’s 8th Guards), and are interested in that, so we also wanted to come up with a way to let them play as well.
So when it comes to factions, we have lots of POTENTIALS. I don’t want to promise anything because I’m sure there are system constraints on the back end. But from a historical / creative perspective, we have:
MAIN FACTIONS: Soviets, Germans, Italians (not invaded yet), British, and Americans, even Free French.
SUPPORTING FACTIONS: People can play New Zealanders, Canadians, Australians on the Allied side, Tito’s leftist Yugoslavian partisans on the Soviet side, or even Croatians on the German side.
THREE WAY WAR? Although the Soviets and Anglo-Americans are of course (ahem) “allies,” the whole point of this invasion is to block the Soviets from grabbing too much of eastern Europe through the process of the Third Reich’s collapse. So while the Germans and Italians are fighting both the Soviets and the Western Allies, these two sides will be furiously racing against and competing with each other for key objectives.
Soviet, American, British, German, and Italian forces are all fighting simultaneously in the same general battle area. Not only does this provide great variety and allow more people to participate with armies on hand, it provides plenty of opportunity for (ahem) an “accident?” … leading to a second stage of the campaign could see a full-scale shooting war erupt between Western Allies and the Soviet Union?
The creation of Lloydoslavia?
Didn’t recognise you from your thumbnail pic 🙂 Beard really looks good on you @oriskany.
At 130am @warzan is talking about jumping into bed with us. Not just a little bit disconcerting.
At least I know you will have kept my spot warm lol
@warzan great to see you back mate, let’s see some of the wedding photos
When I get em I’ll see what I can do lol
Great start to the weekend. Nice content guys.
Board game looks cool.
Would be awesome to play yourself in a game
Much like the mechanic that Dark Souls has created to give a flavour of the original game, This War of Mine seems to have done something similar. It’s a pretty interesting idea, I’m going to watch a few more play throughs before making a decision on backing, but I think I’m close.
Come on Jammie Dance!!
If I was Bren , when Warren was talking , I would roll eyes or sneak on signs ‘Warren does it with 28mm’ etc…
Lol
This War of Mine looks very good! Another KickStarter on my list.
Gotta love some post-apocalypse. 😉
I am wondering with the operation Zeus that given the timeline and the allies going through the Balkans and Greece that when the Soviets realise what the Allies are up to and trying to stop their influence in Eastern Europe will drive south into Afghanistan and then India so they can get an Indian Ocean Naval base that they gave always wanted and also divert a lot of British troops as well .This would bring the Japanese into play as well .
Great stuff @torros!
Definitely a great idea, @torros . I think this will depend on two major constraints:
a) How “wide a stage” the team and the system will be able to support. Right now the prospective battle area barely covers the former Yugoslavia.
b) How far we want to push the Soviets vs. Allies angle – because Afghanistan and India are British dominions at the time, right? So this would be Soviet armies actively invading the British Empire.
But who knows? In the end I think we just want an arena where whoever wants to can participate with the WW2 armies they have on hand. 😀
I have also an idea about Nationalist partisans fighting on different fronts to make sure they have a country once the war is over. I guess it would a bit like the Balkan wars in the early 20th century and 1990’s. In an ideal world these would be NPC’s in a campaign but might be a step too far for Operation Zeus
Would the Soviet Union even be able to invade Afghanistan + India( the Indian volunteer army were over 1,5 million strong making it one of the largest volunteer forces in history.) if this is set after Stalingrad and still be able to push back the Germans? Despite claims the Sovjet Union were running low on manpower and with out the allied supply would they had the means to push the Germans back without the oilfields of Caucasus?
That Shiva set does look super inspired by Temple of Doom, they do look awesome for using in Frostgrave as well!
Great idea!
I have been a fan of Michal Oracz since Neuroshima Hex. I love that game and it was obvious that I should pledge for this as well. Love this game and love the theme. Once again, Michal Oracz proves why he’s one of the best game designers in the industry nowadays!
Very cool, looking forward to this game.
Another Saturday and barely two minutes free from the kids to download the weekender ready to watch on the train for Monday. Looking forward to it.
Wowho I am famous for just my birthday ; )
Just like Jesus…
Spits tea out lol
Jesus was also famous for his catering
…and his illusions!
I’ll get my coat!
And we might have the same hair due …
is there a miniature of King George VI and Winston Churchill out there or is it time form me to get some greenstuff out ?
https://www.blackscorpionminiatures.com/product_info.php?products_id=32
ok then maybe i just save the greenstuff King George VI
Go for it!
ya but in which pose ?

C
B just looks majestic.
Okay, everyone … I found some quick confirmation of the “Churchill Plot” to actually LAND (i.e., hop out of a landing craft) at Normandy.
A few quick excerpts:
King George VI wrote a letter to Sir Winston Churchill on May 31, 1944. [That’s just a week before D-Day.] Its contents were shocking: the prime minister, pushing 70 years old, and the king, pushing 50, both intended on landing on the Normandy beach on D-Day. How was their plan foiled? Sir Winston Churchill, a veteran of the Boer War in Africa, was no stranger to combat. King George VI, a veteran of the First World War, was also familiar with battle.
Later on …
… When Churchill proposed that he would land on the beaches at Normandy with the British troops on D-Day, King George was shocked. “I don’t think I need to emphasize what it would mean if…a chance bomb, torpedo or mine should remove you from the scene,” he explained in his letter to Churchill.
King George thought that he would deter Churchill by suggesting that he join him in the D-Day landing. Churchill, “the Lion”, was all for it, however. Admiral Ramsay intervened and explained to both leaders that they were needed at home to make crucial decisions if D-Day did not go as planned. “I would ask you to reconsider your plan,” wrote King George to Churchill.

Truth is stranger than fiction. 😀
Happy weekend!
Love the idea of operation Zeus!
But how do I bring my japanese forces into it? paratroopers? or a japanese carrier group coming up through the Suez canal? after all its a long march from Burma 😉
And sign me up for that weekend 🙂
An idea has been punted in up above there by @torros
Obviously we dont want to streatch stuff too far (i have my dinosaurs waiting in the wings lol) but lets see if there is a realistic way it could happen
Otherwise join my 8th guard 😉
@warzan, @torros, @oriskany and @ reiton I like the idea of focussing the battles on the Balkans much more than a free for all over the world. But instead of having the USSR invade through India, and create a huge new ‘what if’ campaign, why not extrapolate a bit in the Pacific?
Germany had colonies in Southeast Asia until they lost WW1: German New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Bougainville, Micronesia, Nauru, Marshall Islands, Mariana Islands, Caroline Islands and German Samoa.
How about, as part of this what if, Germany had done a deal with Japan and reclaimed the territories it lost in the peace treaties following WW1? The British, US and Japanese are already in the area, although the Soviets are still a long way away…
Perhaps this needs a bit more thought. Actually, Germany also had some colonies in China. If it took them back from Japan too, that would place them and the fighting nearer to the Soviet Union…
Spot the man playing endlessly with that bloody ring, sliding it (seductively?) up and down that finger lol
Seriously any tips for a guy who never wears a ring or stuff like that, how do you stop fiddling with it (the ring, behave yourself)
i think you are done for in the case of your right you are doom to foddeling it like Golom in the lord of the ring
I usually take mine off when I sit down to do anything.
I will lose it (then it’s game over man, game over)
Not if you always put it in the same place. Learned that lesson the hard way lol
just keep it on
get a chain for it @warzan ?
The scary thing is that eventually it will look like you’re wearing it when you’ve taken it off. I mean a ring tan mark, how the frig does that happen……………….22yrs of blissful marriage!?!?
😉 😉 😉
Took me a long time to get used to wearing mine, before that the extent of “jewellery” I wore consisted solely of my watch. Just takes time to let it bed in (for want of a better term).
Just make sure you don’t do what I did. Few weeks after the wedding, sat at my desk at work, had been fiddling with it so it was sat loose on my finger just above the knuckle, swung my arm out in a gesticulation and shot the ring across the office (on the 2nd floor), watched it bounce off an open window and thankfully back onto the floor! That was a proper slow-mo “noooooooo” moment! 😀
I put mine on a thong….. around my neck 😉 (seriously that’s what they call those things, thongs, search it Amazon and see how that goes!)
That way it never goes missing, I don’t have to worry about playing with it and if you tell the Mrs ‘ just wanted keep you closer to my heart’ then you get bonus points and we all know what happens with bonus points…
Precccioussss ?
25 years and I’m still at it mate, you will or wont stop fiddling at your own pace….
loved the PC game version. depressing as hell.
If you like being depressed as much as real multi-player options in a game, you will not be disappointed. What the two gentlemen mentioned only ever so slightly during their chit-chat is that TWoM is a solo-player game without any real multi-player options. The story book is passed to the next player each phase (morning, night), but the player in charge makes all the decisions for all the characters in the group. Both authors of the game confirmed this, one on BoardGameGeek, the other in an AMA on Reddit.
Yes, of course all players can talk and discuss which actions should be taken — but communication between players is something you always have, for every game in the world from Monopoly to Risk. Whenever six friends come together for a couple hours, they won’t just sit there and move their meeples in silence, so considering this obvious and normal human behaviour as a justification to call it multi-player, when in fact it’s nothing but the «baton passing» of the single player game around, is rather an alibi in order to be able to write the currently chic and popular word ‘co-op’ on the box.
If you understand multi-player as multiple players who need to combine their individual talents, decisions and actions in order to reach a common goal, than you can look forward to being depressed by the board game just as much as you were by its digital counterpart. 🙂
Hope you had an amazing time @warzan
Just about to watch this episode but this war of mine is a fantastic PC game so I can only imagine the board game will be great too.
Great to see Battlegroup on the show. It’s a great game and would love to see you guys get the author on the show and show a game. The blog post that’s started by oriskany is excellent and gives a great overview of the game. A WW2 campaign starting in September, brilliant, can’t wait!
i do like the look of those models from the CMON crawler.
Great prize as ever guys
this war of mine suddenly really became this war of MINE:) im a backer and I look forward to painting and playing:)
Happy weekend! I’ve backed This War of Mine Kickstarter. It looks amazing plus the stretch goals are excellent too. The original is worth getting. Brilliant but brutal theme.
Just downloaded This war of mine on steam a week ago. And I have to say that it is an amazing morally intense game. First computer game in years to keep me up all night. Looking forward to see a gameplay video of the board game.
I like the Operation Zeus concept a lot – and I have been toying with Battlegroup already. It can be adapted for 15mm/20mm and maybe even 28mm if you tweak the range/effects scales slightly (I believe some people have done that).
I am working on my own What If? idea but that is for later 🙂
I skipped the Dark Souls thing as I’m trying to be a bit more selective with my pledges, but TWOM actually looks like it could make a pretty cool board game all by itself. Wonder what the next computer game to make the leap to board game will be,
Happy weekend
That’s an other Kickstarter I want to back
What a blast to see you all – and Oriskany, great, inspiring job! Fantastic show!
Thanks very much, @tuskar ! 😀
Happy weekend
That would have to be one of the coolest prizes I have seen on BOW and if the board game captures the feeling of the electronic game … it will be a killer. I discovered TWOM quite by accident when looking for something interesting to play on my tablet when on a 7 hr bus trip out to work on a mining camp for a week. A trip I was not looking forward to, zipped by and left me going .. damn I am here already .. I have to stop playing now 🙂
Good morning! This war of Mine is such an awesome videogame I wonder how that translates to a boardgame. I liked the How-To-Play video on the kickstarter page so it’s looking real good.
This war of mine seems cool.
Good morning everyone. Is the leader character of the TV crew not a parody of ming the merciless from flash gordon.
It’s (almost) the Weekend!!
I did some development work around AI control systems over 20 years ago, and things are only getting more and more ‘intelligent’. Many a supposed computer game AI system is actually just simple reactive algorithms and often these actually (shock horror) ‘cheat’ for want of a better word because they know what cards you have etc.
How many games are actually about working out how to beat those AI algorithms, and once you’ve done that then it’s “game over” as the challenge is won. Dark Souls (video game) proposition is actally just a series of such challenges; it’s interesting that the board game will play on that – looking forward to it.
But now imagine this… just as you start to learn how to beat the AI, it has also been learning about YOU, and how you play the game. Next time you play it changes things up… it may even exploit your playstyle to suck you into a trap!
That’s where we’re headed folks…
Next level. You and your friends have been playing a game against the AI for a while, which been learning about each of you.
A tourney’s coming up and you want to get some practice? “AI – play against me like Bob!”
Bob can’t make an evening of group gaming? “AI – fill in for Bob!”
The racing game ‘Forza Motorsport’ actually has that kind of stuff.
In the first version of that game for the original Xbox you actually had to teach your ‘drivatar’ how you’d race and the ‘AI’ would learn.
When the version for the Xbox One was announced they made a big deal out of the fact that they were using cloud-based services to create these ‘drivatars’.
If you’ve either played Forza 6 or the current (free) pc version called “Forza Motorsport 6: Apex” then you will encounter AI racing cars that drive like real people.
And as a result they don’t drive in a predictable single file like the AI does in most racing games.
This article explains it in detail :
http://research.microsoft.com/en-us/projects/drivatar/forza.aspx
Caught a program about churchill in ww1 on the tv recently, a repeat of this documentary. Ties in nicely with Op Zeus…
http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b037w3bj
Was probably on one of the more obscure non-BBC channels further down the list.
Very nice prize for “This War of Mine”.
In regard to “Operation Zeus”, don’t forget the decoy invasion that the allies made into Scandinavia (would be awesome to see Finland involved in this).
Well, what do you expect from any wargaming action from Czech Republic, country with greatest beer consumption level and best beer worldwide…
Drink and paint, beergames…
Enjoy!
This talk about the War of Mine makes me all the more interested to buy the video game..
Another awesome weekender video again troops. Thanks for filling me in on my hobby gossip for the week. Congrats @warzan on getting married. I’m walking down the aisle in 3months too. Exciting times! And cannot wait for the WW2 campaign. History buff in me craving to get out 🙂
Congrats!
Best advice I actually got on here and I took it, forget about everyone and enjoy your day with the bride
You will never get around them all anyway 🙂
This War of Mine looks like a really good co-operative immersive game.
Good update. This war of mine looks good, and had not heard of it before seeing it on BoW
that’s another good thing
I’m already supporting This War of Mine on Kickstarter; I’ve spent some time in the Balkans, and am really keen to play through a scenario where fighting is rarely the best option. It’s also interesting (from a KS perspective) to see the minis versus gameplay discussion heat up whenever a new stretch goal is offered.
Well I have definately added this boardgame to my wishlist just like the computer version on my steam account, oh wishing away….
@warzan
I fiddled with my ring for the better part of my marriage.
After 16 years of rubbing I managed now to -unsurprisingly but totally unintentionally- erase her name .NOT GOOD. Now I have to find a way of engraving it back before She finds out..
Operation Zeus sounds epic!!
I will have to get my Panzergrenadiers ready by September then!!!
Would love to come over and meet Oriskany 😎
I’m gonna sign up for a weekend!!!
@warzan don’t take this the wrong way, but you need to go away on a regular basis as loads of cool stuff was released while you were away lol ;)…..
Great show as usual…
Lol agreed
Game looks great and a nice change from the current kickstarter fare, I like the way they have designed the house to make it playable as a board game- being able to upgrade rooms by building beds etc,
I’m watching the bit about This War of Mine a second time. While most tabletop games exist in a fairly amoral bubble, I love the moral dimension. It’s what I look for in books (IMO mainstream fiction does this much better than genre fiction) and to see it in a game … count me in!
In fact I’ve just pledged. I’m still watching the chat again though.
I think that it is great that a game such as this war of ours can be out now. Imagine trying to get that game out as little as ten years ago? It would have been just impossible yet now we have a robust game with amazing mechanics. I really impressed with it. I just wish sometimes I didn’t live in the hobby wasteland of Australia.
This war of mine looks amazing, detailed and heavy in a way that makes it not everyones cup of tea. Having said that a game with the consequences of war is something that is long overdue. I am not a person who does Kickstarters but this along with the add ons etc has to be something that if I could I would. The figures look impressive, the add ons look spot on and really need to be shown. Orphans etc are what war makes and seeing them in the play add ons makes this game as good as it probably gets, in the darkest way this may be the BEST war game cannot wait to get hold of it.
On the subject of AI GMs, you could rate the AI after each game on how fun yuo found different aspects of the experience. The AI’s primary goal could be to get the best score there. It could also compare scores vs demographics based on your profile details, and even learn to tailor games vs your personal preference. This would stop it being about the AI defeating people at all times.
There seems to be a good trend of PC to board games at the moment! Nice to see such a good concept making the journey too!
I’m going to have to check out This War of Mine, looks interesting.
Can’t wait to see more of Massive Darkness.
Operation Zeus sounds absolutely epic! You should most definitely host a weekend event, possibly with all kinds of preparation logs tying in. Hobby lab, painting armies, building tanks, there is so much potential! Really looking forward to it.
The main guy in that Shiva set for 7TV looks very much like Ming the Merciless, the old Buster Crabbe one from the ’30’s.
Not sure that the rest of them fit into that though, so maybe its a coincidence.
Great video again guys thanks.
happy weekend!
great show guys! love the operation zeus concept I really would like to participate in it not sure if I have much time by the end of the year we expect my little one to see the light of this world in august so its very possible I will be swamped taking care of my wife and him. But if I find the time I will join the fun.
regarding battlegroup I bought the BG PDF rulebook last december but didn’t had much time to give it a go. After reading Oriskanys and Piers article on it I bought the Kursk PDF to get a better understanding of how it works and I like it. I’m still busy getting my US para troopers on the table but I’m getting there. Motivated and inspired by the article series, yavasa and piers forum post I will post my own little plog on building my US para trooper force.
I would love to see a BG FTW series if possible with Oriskany, Dave, John and Warren! In the end FoW FTW was the show the brought me to BoW and back to wargaming.
Have a great weekend!
I’ve heard nothig but good things about the This war of mine computer game, and that board game looks just as good.
Campaign sounds fun, can we go as small as playing Tanks?
Like the sound of operation Zeus.
about Churchill, if I remember correct he wanted to be on one of the flagships during the first wave but the King had to hold him back stating it would be really bad if he gets killed and England has to vote for a new prime minister during the war. Please correct me if I’m wrong.
Btw I love the picture of Churchill and the King lounging on a landing craft during the invasion…
The game looks good , but how this will work out is a mystery to me
@warzan – I think the leader of Shiva looks a lot like Roger Delgado as he appeared as The Master in the Doctor Who story The Daemons.
This War of Mine looks like a really interesting take on the video game – I’ll defo be keeping an eye on that.
As for companion apps for games – this could be an amazing step forward, especially for dungeon crawlers. Can you imagine a narrative driven campaign run by a companion app with full voice over. Would be amazing.
I understand that is what GM/DM’s are for, but not everyone has access to someone that is a brilliant GM/DM to make their games better – this is an amazing way forward for the industry!
Good to see Warren back, congrats again and nice to hear that you had a good honeymoon!
The app for Descent sounds awesome. I wonder if they are going to do something similar for Imperial Assault.
And loving the Battlegroup coverage. I have most of the books but I’m to yet to play a game of it. Gotta get those 15mm armies dusted off and back to the battlefield.
And oh yes definitely looking to take part in Operation Zeus!
I hope i will have possibility to play this game
I might need to get that game.
Great, as always.
great to see @warzan back our resident Lurve albatross it seems, cue the Barry White….lol
Prepare for my ultrasonic rumble of luuuuurrvvvveee
Love this war of mine. Been playing on Steam and tablet since it was released. Very excited to see what the table top version will bring
Ooooo Operation Zeus sounds fabulous. I need to speed up on painting my Germans! 🙂 As for the Japanese. They can be easily incorporated into the fray. @torros posted a cool idea. They can also use the opportunity and strike again from China if we are going alternative all the way. So we have the Japs fighting Americans, Brits and Soviets. Everybody wins. 🙂
Seem like the area of the campaign might be limited to just the balkans so it is a long strike from the east ….
See http://www.beastsofwar.com/groups/historical-games/forum/topic/operation-zeus-suggestions-speculations-and-unhelpful-nonsense/
Looking forward to Massive Darkness & This War of Mine.
Been seriously eyeing up This War of Mine KS. looks very cool.
If we can assist with the campaign @oriskany let me know…
Always fancied doing Leros…
I hope I didn’t mangle that interview too badly … 😐
happy weekender, warren I can watch a weekender with just you, as long as there is a weekender 😉
This War of Mine is looking very cool. I really like what they have planned for the app according to the latest update.
Hmmm…. WW2 gaming weekend with BoW you say…. tempting!
Am very much liking the look of Massive Darkness. The new WHQ was a bit of a let down for me (tried it at WH Fest last weekend) in that it didn’t scratch the dungeon crawler itch. MD however looks like it could do the trick, so I shall eagerly await more info
Love to be a mini in this war of mine but if I do not win could they do a Warren & Justin ice-cream van ?
BOW team don’t forget you have the BG rules in the Battlegroup Kursk Book ;).
Operation Zeus sounds cool, a weekend would be great:). I wonder where a strategic bombing campaign would fit in from the Allies against the Soviets?
Potential match ups T-34/43 against Sherman M4’s (no Firefly’s/M4A3 76mm at that time period). Also I guess lend-lease would not be happening, so the Soviet supply lines might be hampered on their advance?
This WW2 campaign is the stuff of dreams, truly fantastic that your are making this come true 😀
TWoM is the kickstater pledge list for the end of the month, it might just be one if the best coop games out there. The PC version is well worth a look aswell, even if you mostly end up sick and starving and feeling a bit hopeless when thinkin that this is what people are “experiencing” this very day.. That make this game feel even more important.
I don’t think i’d like to play with AI GMs that are predominately, or even at all designed to learn and reproduce what’s fun for you. What i would like to see is AI GMs that mimic the personalities, aims and reactions of the creatures and enemies you are fighting against ( as opposed to mimicking a GM who wants to win, or an ‘are we having fun yet’ GM ). For example, if we take our adventures into a stronghold of ‘brutish, bumbling, battle loving orcs’ then i’d like to see the AI play the individual orcs as disorganised, wanting to get into a fight, and with no particular aim or strategy. If on the other hand we pit our adventurers against an undead horde controlled by a ‘powerful, micromanaging, cruel necromancer’ then i’d like to see the undead acting as a horde, unconcerned for their own ‘lives’ but non-the-less tactical, strategic and co-ordinated, as well as on occasion being ( for the amusement of the overly self confident necromancer ) cruel. In essence i’m interested in more of an RPG GM.
One of the things i like about miniature games is that they don’t involve a screen, so i’d prefer to have AI systems that are card / dice / table based.
If that’s what you find fun maybe that’s what it would do 🙂
I see the logic, but i want it to do those things ( whatever those things are ) regardless of how fun i find them. I want the necromancer to be cruel even if i don’t find it fun. Also, I don’t want to have to make a judgement and feed that back into the AI. I know this is BOW heresy, but i don’t find that the word fun is a good way of describing why i play these games, and the word is a good indicator that it’s not the kind of game for me. I suppose it depends on how you define fun, but you have to generalise that definition to the point of meaninglessness for it to apply in my case.
This War of Mine is looking interesting… different than most of the stuff on the market…
Cool stuff,
welcome back Warren
I like the sound of This war of mine, sounds like something my gaming group would embrace with open arms. As for operation zeus might be the tipping point for getting them into ww2 in some fashion.
Aww, great to see @warzan all loved up. Huge congratulations to you Warren. Good on ya! 🙂
Gotta finish my US Army for this, hopefully Bolt Action is in the planned campaign!
‘This War of Mine’ has some decent gameplay chops. Think I might like this one better then Dead of Winter.
Good one
The sculpts for ‘this war of mine’ looks really good.
Need to check our the pc game
This war of mine board game looks like it will be a faithful representation of the PC game.
Would not Operation Bagration arguably the most successful operation of the entire ww2 which occurred about the same time as D-day and destroyed an entire German Army group middle be an option?
Great call, @rollsk1 – Operation Bagration was indeed the “granddaddy of them all” – three times the size of Overlord and did far more to actually smash the German war machine. Busch’s whole Army Group Centre was basically vaporized in that offensive.
In regards to Zeus, we just wanted to …
a) not be “stuck” too deep in real history, allowing enhanced player freedom (and less constraints on the web / engineering side)
b) allow for more factions. People are only going to play with the armies they have, and if we limit the field to, say … just Soviets and Germans, we leave out potentially hundreds of players with British, American, Free French, or Italian armies. The more factions we have, the more inclusive we can be for the most players. 😀
Even if it pains me I cant argue historical accuracy over playability and fun^^.
People oddly like to play as Yanks and British 😉 . Hmm Romania should still be an axis powers aswell as Hungary. One could actually get Hungarian para trooper’s involved in the Balkans. Finland would then perhaps have to go on the offensive from the karelian and cut of the Leningrad railway junction which would lead to the city’s fall which would unlodge a not inconsiderable amount of German forces.
Allot to think about:)
Great show guys.
CMON do make some great board game miniatures.
oooo… operation Zeus sweet, have to figure out how to get some naval actions in, though you dont want another Galliopoli.
i am assuming that the Japanese are going to miss out on this one…lol
i would be up for some gaming at BoW HQ…:-)
Brought the battlegroup rules but not really looked at them, well that’s going to change.
The War of mine looks really different of all the game i know and i really think that game play is for me so just in case i have pledge for it i just don’t want to miss it 😉
The operation Zeus idea looks great. Don’t know why no one has done it before.
Just bought a German army. Hmmmm. May have to get the guys together for September…..
Great show as always.
this war of mine looks very interesting as does the con game, and operation Zues looks to be a great idea.
This war of mine is a great PC game. Can’t wait for the board game.
This war of mine looks like a unique take on War. Havent played the videogame but will check it out now. Also Massive Darkness is first CMON game Im tempted to buy – It looks good.
Operation Zuess, fascinating idea
Great show all. This War of Mine looks interesting. Operation Zeus on the other hand sounds Outstanding!
I have recently tried out the Battlegroup rules. I really liked them. I have played FoW since first edition. The complexity level is about the same. They just handle things differently. Infantry is much better in Battlegroup. For now mine is still based per FoW it will be awhile before it is all re-based as I have all of the major powers and many of the minor powers.
Oriskany, I look forward to following your articles.
Nice, I think this game will give a good gaming experience. I am glad I am backing this one!
Happy weekend 🙂
Go is a Japanese game. It can be scale in difficulty as well .
This war of mine looks good. Wish the diarama was part of it 😛 Congrats and good to see you back Warren.
@oriskany 1:11:19 “Once your total value of total number of battle rating counters has reached your Battlegroup’s beginning Battle Rating, the game is over. That is when you’ve lost.”
Not accurate. The total value on your chits has to _exceed_ your Battlegroup’s Battle Rating before your force is ordered to withdraw. Being equal to your BR doesn’t loose you the game.
Mini rule book, page 43, second paragraph: “[…]when it exceeds the battlegroup’s total battle rating[…]the battle is over and you are defeated!”
Second paragraph in the middle column – my bad =p
I’ve backed the kickstarter and this game looks so awesome
Happy weekend
This WW2 campaign sounds absolutely incredible. I’d love to come over for some games. Already rounding up the guys in the club, so everything will be ready and we can get a lot of games in.
This war of mine looks to be a very interesting game! cant wait to get a game of it
This war of mine looks like a very interesting game, that’s for sure
I did not know the game, but the more I here about it on BoW, the more I am interested in both the mobile game and the board game.
…It sounds like THIS WAR OF MINE will be as good on table top as it is on the PC….Will have to check it out….By the way Awesome Foliage @warzan 😀
I beg to differ on the childbirth. Two of my kids were born at home and it was beautiful. (more so for me as the man I I did not have the pains, but got the endorphines for free). Nothing horrifying, Just the beauty of something so special and yet natural.
Yup 2 of my three ended up in intensive care (but are both fighting fit now) 🙂
Different experience entirely, home birth sounds lovely, did you have a pool?
And speaking of ‘Machine Learning’ : https://studio.azureml.net/
One of the examples tries to predict your chances of surviving the Titanic :

So after looking into Dungeon Saga, Warhammer Quest, the app-updated Descent, Massive Darkness, Dark Souls, etc. we need a head-to-head Best Dungeon Crawler deathmatch, or at least a 2016 awards category anyway.
Massive Darkness is another thing to go excited about, I’m sure we’ll get another boat load of freebies from all the stretches but I always look forward to the playthrough vids thy do as well
Really enjoyed the King’s of war battle too this week with Justin
Great weekender!!
Nice idea for ww2.
Happy Sturday!
This war of Mine sounds really cool. Warhammer Quest and now Massive darkness, its a good time for the dungeon crawl.
Great show guys! Thanks for the This War of Mine part, this game is very tempting! Massive Darkness is also tempting, i will look into it.
See you Sunday!
Will Operation Zeus be entirely Battlegroup or a mix of systems? Heard of a number of other rules but no idea how they play except they are popular. Rapid Fire I think being one.
My understanding from the video was that you will be able to use whichever WWII system you want to use.
Thanks, @admiralandy – I can provide at least a partial answer to your question – Operation Zues will definitely not be only Battlegroup. 🙂
Multiple systems will be supported. Exactly which (and how many) systems will be used depends on a few factors.
First up, here’s a basic overview of the project. In summary, it seems Beasts of War wants to replicate the recent success of their awesome Infinity “Flamestrike” campaign, this time in a quasi-WW2 setting. So most of the features that were in the Flamestrike Campaign they may try to work into Operation Zeus.
This would include people submitting battle reports, people rating other peoples’ battle reports / videos / photos, an extremely free-flow engagement system, tracking how many victories each faction has won, tracking how many battles have been fought over different locations, who’s won the most victories in each location, “AI historians,” etc.
The only major functional difference so far is that Flamestrike was obviously one system (Infinity), Zeus will have as many systems a possible.
Possible limiting factors:
1) What companies reach out to support / participate in the project as Corvus Belli did with Infinity Flamestrike.
2) A way to measure the points / resources from different systems. We’d have to come up with something to equate … say, 1000 points in Flames of War vs. a company in Bolt Action vs. kampfgruppe in Battlegroup etc etc. This is going to be especially tricky when it comes to games like Bolt Action (platoon level, maybe 20 guys on a side) vs. larger systems like Battlegroup or Flames of War where you’re playing companies or possible battalions (up to 300+ guys for really big games).
How do we do all this without “nerfing” the big battles, while at the same time not making the smaller games (and players) feel insignificant?
THEN you have to take all these subtleties and permutations and code them into a suite of automated, web-based tracking tools.
Rest assured, guys … smart people will be working on this stuff, but there are lots of problems, constraints, and obstacles that those of us on the consumer end don’t see.
Cool Mini or Not looks like they have done it again. I don’t play video games much anymore so I’m not familiar with this game. The boardgame version looks fantastic though and seems as though it sucks you right in to the grim atmosphere.
The campaign sounds like a great idea.
Another great episode of the Weekender! Thanks guys! Really love the look and feel for This War of Mine will definitely have to check it out and the video game.
Really looking that “this war of mine” game. I bought it on PS4 and i really enjoyed it a lot… the board game looks incredibly similar, would be nice to try it with friends.
We just picked up This War of Mine on Steam. We are trying it out this weekend.
This War of Mine is my current “Most Anticipated Board Game” it looks amazing.
Seems like the board game will be a good rendition of the online game. Would very much like to own the board game actually. Thank you for the giveaway!
The models from This War of Mine look like they’d be perfect for The Walking Dead from Mantic as custom/future characters.
I am really tossing up about this. If even a small amount of the feeling the PC game gives you can be translated into the board game then I think I’m in. It’s a basic idea yet so intense. Great overview.
Disappointed to have missed the live blogs, but at least now I have some reading to do. Thanks guys!
Nice to see a videogame to boardgame adaption that isn’t just phoned in.
I’m not sure about the game, but the miniature sounds amusing.
Well, that special miniature is sure something unique to win!
The new campaign sounds fun – guess it’s time to finally get round to putting my Bokt Action army together 🙂
This game looks fantastic 🙂 Definitely worth checking it out on Kickstarter.
Brilliant campaign idea! I love your creativity
The meat grinder in WW2 sounds cool-look forward to it happening.
Another enjoyable show
Sounds fantastic; why not? I’d look appropriately grungy as a mini in that game =P
Happy sunday for you all.
Intrigued by TWOM as a board game. The computer game got really boring after a while
I think the Shiva Guru/Sorcerer looks a little like Ming the Merciless from Flash Gordan & Kali possibly Mings daughter.
A WW2 campaign? Where do I sign up? 😀
I think you just did, @neves1789 . 😀
Looks great, can’t wait to see some more detail!
Commenty McCommentface.
I remember hearing it was coming to KS, but totally missed the launch. The digital game is unforgiving, wonder how the analogue version will fare.
I really like the civilian models from This War of Mine, but I don’t tend to do many board games. Will it be possible to purchase them separately?
I think I’d fit in pretty well as a TWoM miniature. I’m an overweight long haired guy with glasses, not many of those in this game 🙂
The sculpts shown are awesome.
You will love the Czech Republic! My favorite place in the whole world! 🙂
Although its not what I would normally go for in a boardgame, I’m really liking the look of This War of Mine.
This game is on my Steam wishlist.
Love the idea of a boardgame.
All in all looks pretty exciting.
This sounds cool. This war of mine is one of the most thought provoking games I have ever played.
Wow…its a good videogame. Boardgame sounds good.
This looks like a great adaptation of the pc game. Look forward to playing it.
Looks like a really interesting game, can’t wait to try it.
Great idea! We should have more of these!
Hmz now you got me interested in this kickstarter too… You guys cost me a lot of money 😀
🙂 nice
I really like the idea of the apps to assist with rather than replace gameplay as I think it will help deal with some of the more complex elements that maybe put people off from jumping into the more complex boardgames. Don’t really play video games anymore so wasnt aware of This War of Mine, but the boardgame does look interesting and another take on coop play which seems to be a more common trend these days. I have backed some of the other Awaken Realms stuff and they seem to be branching out in all sorts of cool ways.
Have not played the computer game but love the idea of a game based around normal people just trying to survive. I notice the PS4 version has children in it, does anybody know if they have plans to add that to the game. Does anybody think there are other real life situation that could make good board/computer games, not just simply being a hero or soldier. For me getting up in the morning to go to work is a bloody quest on it own, ha ha
The last stretchgoals unlocked is “orphans” featuring a ‘boy’ and ‘girl’ miniature… so yep, they’ve got the kids in.
God this game looks soooooo good – in every way imaginable.
Only if. …
Then I could play with myself. ……as a mini
Already backed this !
Hope it will get as good as the PC Game
Looks pretty cool.
Great show this week, thanks guys
I’ve been waiting to get into Dead of Winter… but with TWoMmits a no brainer- definitely backing this KS. But a custom mini would be great too…
I’m really excited about this game. I’ve had the PC version saved to my Steam Wishlist for a while and will definitely be giving this a go as a board game.
Nice models.
This War of Mine seems awesome!
This is a great opportunity, I really wanted this game.
Thanks for the contest
I wonder how well a mini will resemble an actually person…. It be cool to see this process
Awesome prizes as per usual 🙂
This war of mine looks very cool, I have the Ipad version and I can’t stop playing!
really good show this week guys This war of Mine and battlegroup look nice
Fun stuff!
Great Show guys.
This War of Mine looks very intriguing. A challenging set of game mechanics.
Operation Zeus gets two thumbs up!
I’m in. This game looks to be something my game group and my family would enjoy.
Nice episode. I’m looking forward to trying Descent with that app.
Warren congratulations. Good to hear you had a fantastic day and a good honeymoon.
I really love the Lost Patrol project. I followed it completely. I think you guys did a fantastic job, but I have to say. I should replace the Scouts with Catachan Jungle fighters. And to make it complete, I would replace the genestealers with the Predator Young Bloods. They look so fantastic. Or maybe some prodos aliens. I really love the feel of the old Predator and Alien movies.
I like the Temple of Doom Shiva miniatures. Very simple but coollooking miniatures. I think they will be a very big fun painting. I agree the lowest look like Shredder from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
Love the Massive Darkness game. I like the miniatures, they have a bit of a Confrontation feel, but a bit darker. I am a fan of the elf. And a true coöp game is fantastic. I don’t have DM’s in my gamegroup. I agree with Warren, the most 3D sculpt miniatures are too clean. I love the old sculpting, but these look good too.
The interview about Battlegroup is good information. I think I still choose Operation Squad and Tanks, because I like pick&play games, but still information is always welcome. Operation Zeus sounds as big fun.
Or replace the scouts with the Youngbloods and the genstealers with Aliens – but that might take some of the feel of the game
Happy weekend. I’ve played the video game and have to say it is one of the best and most meaningful 2d game I played. I am excited to see that the board game gives the same feelings of desperation sorrow and connection to your character.
Awesome computer game, really looking to see the board game. 🙂
Well looks like I’ll be picking up the board game as well as the computer game at some point then
Happy Saturday
Wow, so much going on. Thanks for the awesome welcome back after my few week absence due to finishing out the school year.
I like the look of the civilian types. Would fit well in my post-apoc scenarios.
I want to be in this game 🙂
Very cool with Lost Patrol…now I’m off for some aquatic plants…
Loving the idea of the board game…. Welcome back Warren and congratulations to you both :o)
I have This War of Mine on steam. It’s a good game. I lost my first group. It’s kinda an emotional game for me. I had a hard time making tough choices at others expense. I know it’s the point of the game but dang, never thought it would do that to me they way it did.
I look forward to seeing what the board game is like. Hope it would stir the same emotions as the pc game.
um, Hi Can it be the weekend again please?
I absolutely loved This War of Mine on PC despite the grim background of the game.
It’s not funny, it’s not hopeful but it is the best game actualy allowing you to experience first hand the harsh conditions of civilians trapped in a warzone for months (Syrian conflict by exemple and a few others come to mind immediately).
The best game of 2014 without hesitating.
I hope the boardgame is gonna be able to really depict with the same tone this so dark context and allow for heartbreaking decisions.
Kieffer
Great show as always. Good to see Warzan back and loved up. Now, as I’m a day late, it’s time for xlbs!
I want it, I need it!!!
Great weekender, thank you. This War looks great and is worth getting just for the minis.
Good show guys.
For those that play WW2 operation zues looks like a good bit of fun.
This War of Mine looks amazing. Awaken Realms is really doing some good stuff.
The Prodos miniatures are excellent.
Where does the Shiva crew come from?
Interesting the WW2 campaign. I just started with bolt action, maybe I can join you in the reconquest of Europe (Y)
war of mine looks a winner
Really like the look of ‘This War of Mine’ the mechanics sound really fun! — I also immediately thought ‘Necromancer’ when I saw that Shiva Mastermind 🙂
No idea they were making a board game version of ‘this war…’, it would give me something to do in hospital!
Hope you start keeping out of said hospital
Awesome show. This war of mine looks ace. Real unique game
Welcome back Warren and keep the lovefire burning!
Like the idea of the campaign. Please let’s have allies and Germans fighting the Russians.
another great episode as usual
This War of Mine – I read that title and a parody of the song “this little light of mine” pops in my head everytime,
Looks interesting
This looks realy cool
I adore survival horror and ‘This War of Mine’ looks amazing. Some of the mechanics remind me of the way consequences of earlier actions drives the narrative in ‘The Walking Dead’ computer games.
I take it number 4 is on rote? @warzan
Go for broke Hal 9000?
Is the AI going to be called sky the mother of skynet but @dignity bet me to it?
Sounds interesting @oriskany WWII 2.0.5? the beast at the back door push?
Churchill with his kinsman’s umbrella?
Yes yes yes Im so into operation zeus! my Poles 1st are ready to kick axis and russians and would love to do it at Beast of War beautiful tables! !
Wow what a weekender. So much good content. That TWoM board game is more than just a board game. @oriskany Great to see you. I’m loving the idea of this Operation Zeus. All my WWII units are late war so a great excuse and motivation to get something new off the ground. I had other plans for some projects this summer. Looks like I got a new one
Thanks, @huscarle and @zorg –
I wouldn’t worry too much about an army having too much late war stuff in it. I mean King Tigers, Pershings, and IS-2s may be a touch much, but in the end we’re trying to set up a fun arena where the largest possible number of people can participate with the armies they have in hand.
We’re also going to try and set it up where we can include the most systems. The only challenge there is going to be coming up with some common “units of measure” for forces involved in the campaign.
With the Infinity campaign it was easy, it was all one system so the points system could be leveraged. Here we’ll have all kinds of systems hopefully, with different points / units rating scales.
We’ll probably have to invent a simple system of our own so the automated interface, tracking, and reporting tools in the campaign website can drive the metrics as we saw in Operation Flamestrike.
Great show guys! I’m continually amazed at how diverse the gaming world is these days.
I have heard nothing but good things about the video game, hopefully the board game keeps high standards.
Looks like it’s going to be a sweet game!
This War of Mine is freaking crazy and great game for PC,so it’s really cool that it comes to our tables as a bordgame! Win a copy and mini of myself would be just great! =)
this is a really cool promotion guys, great job! also interesting discussion about AI and learning. excited for the next infinity week. and thanks for operation flamestrike.
Welcome back Warren and congratulations on your nuptuals..
Welcome back Warren.
Great show, I’ve got my eye on the This War of Mine kickstarter and I’ll have to pick up the steam game on payday.
Those CMON minis do look good.
Rahdo’s run through made me decide to back the project.
I love the post-apocalyptic genre!…and here we got something without the zombie-theme! Nice!
This War of Mine looks like a cracker 😀
Looking forward to Operation Zeus too!
I was tempted by Lost Patrol…now it may be an essential. Great to see Warren back and the EU Masters Coverage was really good too!
Another campaign AND a possible BOW event… Colour me interested!
This War Of Mine looks really good too, but you guys must be slipping – I’d already found and backed this one first!
The figures for massive darkness are lookin g really good
your A.I. Dungeon Master needs ‘mood input’ like the graph on the ITV Leader Election Debates – audience members had a mood slider from 🙁 to 🙂
excellent comp.. great looking game plus being in it as a mini. who wouldn’t want that as a prize.
another cracking show guys, keep up the good work
cant wait for this war of mine!
@warzan, regarding the ww2 campaign, ask @dignity for 2books, “fox on the Rhine”, and “fox on the front”. It explores an alliance between Patton & Rommel vs Himmler and the Soviets” there may be some inspiration for Operation Zeus.
Cool! Count me in. 🙂
Models look neat, marked the project.
Sounds like This War of Mine will be great.
hi.
I used to play wargames a lot. But now a days all of my WG frriends are missing. My actual gaming group its a lot more casual.
So recently I´ve bought Conflicts of heroes (PC). A natural succesor of ASL. Though it´s in my local store in a physical way, and looks amazing, the boards, the larger counters, everything.
But I need someone to play with.
So I.A. will always be my BFF.
From a wargamer in an island, not being literal.
War of mine looks epic!
Have backed the Kickstarter but would be great to win a copy for my son
Welcome back Warren!
I somply loved This war of mine when I discovered it on the PC. I actually cried a couple of times as the moral choices were really tough. I have been following it on the kickstarter and I’m thinking about supporting it as an early christmas present for myself.
It really looks like a great board game as well. getting a shot of actually putting myself in the game is both exhilerating and scary at the same time.
About the “stormpooper” t-shirt; at my work we have a rule that if you can get from your work space to the toilet, poop and get back to work with in 1 minute, you are granted the title of “Stormpooper”. A title that only very few have obtain!
So many games…so little time. CMON game seems likes it’s going to be awesome.
This war of mine has great mechanics and seems very immersive
This War of Mine looks like a fantastic game, also really interested on the CMoN section.
Hi everybody, have a nice week and congratulations to Warren on your wedding, I wish you the best.
I am loving all the new boardgames coming out. They keep getting better and better. Bring on “War of Mine”.
Right on!
This war of mine the pc-game is awesome i hope that the board board game is so too. 🙂
WANT
This game looks cool, I’d really like to win it.
War Of Mine looks interesting!
This war of mine looks AMAZING!
Good morning, what a great episode!!
Im in love with this war Of mine, how can a game touch your moral sense and as said, struggle in the way Of surviving like never seen before.
I think in this area offers a new dimensión on boardgames, isnt just play its like you where making chances like on the real life, awesome!
About campaing sounds great, to many “what if” at least far One more posible One,
Like the idea Of three bloks, just imagine german joinde the usa against soviet advance.
The show was super!
I was watching this in bed in my pyjamas. When Warren threatened to sit next to me under the covers, a horrible chill ran through me and I actually looked at the door just in case!
I would love to have the miniature and watch people fighting to see who would play me 😛
I’m really excited about the increasing number of computer games becoming board games and board games becoming computer games. This continual cross over will only build both hobbies and as the potential to really develop into something new. It’s been discussed before but we will increasingly see technology joining in on the tabletop, not to replace but to enhance. So imagine a game series where you play out the operational encounters on the table top and then head home, between games, to play out the tactical and operational elements on the computer…. Best of all worlds
This War Of Mine looks like a really original boardgame.
I hope this War could be really mine…
FFG were pretty successful in combining a board game with an app when they made their XCOM game.
@warzan Count me in for the artwork and illustrations
This war of mine is a fascinating setting for a game, I wonder how much the creators consulted people who had been in the real situation of surviving a warzone.
I have become a bit obsessed with the idea of This War of Mine. It seems such an original and deeply human game. I am going to have to have serious words with my bank account come payday with regards to the Kickstarter!
This war of mine looking great
This War of mine looks interesting!
I have This War Of Mine on my laptop. It’s been installed for about a year, but I haven’t even tried it yet. Must sort that out.
And huge props for @oriskany and @piers Battlegroup articles. Great game, and well deserving of some coverage. Just recieved my Fall of the Reich book a week ago, can’t wait to put it on the table!
I wonder how the AVP sentry guns will affect the game and if Prodos will make any specific scenarios for them. I hope so. I could do with some more.
A miniature of myself! Wow!!! I have added the game to my steam wish list 🙂
Battlegroup sounds fantastic!
This War of Mine is a fantastic computer game, would love to own the boardgame!
Can’t wait to get my hands on the “This War of Mine”-box. Looks amazing!
Nice intro to This War of Mine, guys, it looks like an interesting game. Especially for the competition winner playing as themselves.
There can be only one!
When does the contest end?
