Every so often, you will see a post from me that will combine two of my hobbies - usually one obscure hobby of mine combined with board games. Whether it be the combination of painting, sewing, peering into nature - I love the breadth of board games that are released nowadays. And that designers are combining some of the coolest of hobbies, with the concepts of board gaming.  Now, confession. I am a full-time plant mom. I spend hours within my day making sure that all my herbs and plants are getting lots of sunlight and are happy, healthy and well-fed. So when I found out that Verdant by Flatout Games would be heading to Kickstarter this year, I was filled with delight. 

Fantasy Realms from WizKidz is one of the reasons why I love card games. Why? Because they are quick, they are fun, and if they are strong enough - they do not take too long to pick up the rules.

I don't know about you, but I learn a ton from board games. Being a bit obsessed with animals, nature and the world we reside in. Photosynthesis taught me more about biology than I ever did at school, and I can thank BioViva for teaching me a world of knowledge about our world when I was growing up. But there is a new board game on Kickstarter right now, entitled Earth Rising. Giving 1-6 players a chance to mould our modern-day society into a sustainable world within the next 20 years. 

Last August on Kickstarter, a board game really took to me, especially thinking that it would be the perfect family game for myself and the kids. And now it is coming to retail later this year, welcoming Dollars to Donuts to a tabletop near you.

Keyper by R&D Games was out a few years back in 2017, filled with fun for two to four players as they all cooperate and compete within their village throughout each season of the year. In 2019, Ben had his eyes on the upcoming expansion, and it is now up on Kickstarter now smashing through the initial target. Where players take to the opportunities of both the shallows and the depths of the sea in Keyper at Sea. 

I have said it before, and I will say it again. Dinosaurs are a huge theme in board games at the minute. And I know that I have claimed the year 2021 - the year of the dinosaur, Pandasaurus Games certainly did not let us down in 2020 with the release of God Loves Dinosaurs. As feared as the human race is, there is one thing since the dawn of time that we as a dominant species of the planet are not winning. We are not sitting at the top of the hierarchical food chain. This food chain has taken place since the dinosaurs roamed the earth, starting with small prey being hunted by larger predators and ultimately being consumed by the top of the top, dinosaurs.

Mantic Games are back on Kickstarter with a project aimed and bringing a range of expansions to Hellboy: The Board Game. There are three expansions for you to pick up plus their new Hellboy: The Dice Game!

After playing board games for so long, you tend to find the same style of game reskinned into a new reimagined adventure. Whether it be in woodland, next time rehashed into sci-fi. I love to find really unique board games alike anything I have ever played before. Canvas is a game that boasts individuality and ties in the artistic ways of the player. Now Canvas by Road to Infamy is back up on Kickstarter with a reprint of its stunning game along with an expansion entitled Reflections. 

Have you ever played Galaxy Trucker? Originally, this game was released in 2007 and I would personally consider this a bit of a classic. The successful card game is getting a relaunch, with updated artwork and slight game changes to bring the space-fuelled adventure to 2021.  

Over the past few months, we've been keeping an eye on the upcoming fantasy skirmish game from Freecompany, the Eldfall Chronicles. We've been given a glimpse into the world, the factions and even a bit of the gameplay and now we have confirmation of the date it's coming to Kickstarter on 18th May if you want to stay informed you can sign up on their website now. 

Quirky and short play-time games are what I look for when it comes to a card game. Something I can pick up and not have to use my brain without it falling into mush due to intense strategy. From the people who made Exploding Kittens, comes a brand new game that requires no board, 15 minutes and one friend to play with, named A Little Wordy.

When most of us hear the term Grease Lightning, we tend to think of Danny Zuko standing on top of a Ford De Luxe pointing shamelessly. However, Wizkids have announced their new push-for-luck board game with the country Greece as opposed to Grease, where players race across the Mediterranean Sea, leaving opponents amongst the waves behind them. 

Do you remember Gravwell? Gravwell was a really popular game that was released all the way back in 2013 and was complimented on the simple yet elegant rule style. Now the space-lurking board game is getting a second edition this year, bringing new features and a modernized refresh to the game. 

I am really loving the releases coming from AEG at the moment, there have been board games aplenty in all different types of themes and mechanics. There was Cubitos, and then Sheepy Time, and now we are heading into the woods, and putting ingredients in the Cauldron with Whirling Witchcraft. 

A new board game, Virtue has been announced by Designer Max Robbins and Publisher Dragon Egg Games, which promises to be coming to Kickstarter this year. This cooperative experience of good-vs-evil is set to challenge the constructs of internal conflict, decision making and ultimately shaping who your character is as a human being. Will they sit take the side of the angels, or will your choices be sways by the demons? 

Up on Kickstarter at the moment, there is whimsy in a new layer and genre! Bringing adorable robot miniatures into the forest in a mechanical friendly, rondel, worker-placement style game - Transmissions. 

Yet, there is a new card game on my radar! And it is up on Kickstarter now smashing through individual stretch goals at a fast pace. Incoming Bone to Pick published by Lycan Studio, a quick semi-cooperative party game, with several different game modes including a campaign - all of which to take down the pesky undead. If you are familiar with Shardhunters and Ausonia - you will love the idea of Bone to Pick. 

There are some new expansions ready to hit Kickstarter for Riot Quest on April 20th this year. Including the Boss Fight Expansion, Heist Expansion, Bounty expansion and a handful of new heroes ready to join the wreckage - in the upcoming Kickstarter Chilly Con Carnage.

After delays and much anticipation, Umbra Via by Pandasaurus Games is now available. You can now unlock the secrets to a mysterious ancient pathway and guide your way by laying tiles and exploring deeper into the unknown - with the hope to pick up all of your flowers along the way. 

The original Marvel United blasted onto Kickstarter and seemed to find its place as a good gateway game for those looking to introduce people to the hobby. It also delved deep into the awesomeness that is the Marvel world and CMON managed to excite many a fan with the array of heroes and villains they included.
