Following a demo of the game recently I decided to dig out some Malifaux boxes (this box and Gremlins – Som’er Crew: The Bayou Boss)

I purchased sometime ago, my purchases were based on the look so that isn’t too bad a way to start a new game.

Malifaux is a weird steampunk setting using cards instead of dice.

The base rules and new cards are available to download for free from Wyrd

The box is a 2nd Edition starter crew with six 32mm miniatures in hard plastic they are real proportions which means very slender and I am not sure how they will stand up to my heavy game play (time will tell)

Mei Feng
Kang
Emberling (in 3rd Edition renamed Forgeling)
3 Railworkers

The game is usually built around “Factions” and “Master” an the “Master” in this box is Mei Feng who happens to have two Factions

  • Ten Thunders
  • Arcanist

Ten Thunders:
Dabbling in assassinations, blackmail, racketeering, burglary, gambling, kidnapping, smuggling, drug trafficking, and anything else deemed illegal, the Ten Thunders is a crime syndicate primarily based in Malifaux City’s Little Kingdom. Sworn to secrecy and expected to willingly give their lives for the organisation, members are exceedingly devoted to their cause, which is to ultimately gain control of Malifaux in its entirety.

Arcanist:
A secretive branch to the Miners and Steamfitters Union, the Arcanists believe that humans should be given free rein to embrace magic and revel in its power. To outsiders of the organisation, they are seen as anarchists and criminals, but to those who share their vision, the Arcanists are an ambitious collection of everyday working men and spell-casters that are capable of truly wondrous feats.

Mei Feng is the leader of the Foundry, a division of the M&SU that builds the railroads that stretch across Malifaux.
The second element to building a crew is that they are built around the masters keyword which for Mei Feng is unsurprisingly FOUNDRY

Rail Crew contentsRail Crew contents

Crews are built using Soul Stones as a resource the usual number is 50 and it is suggested you may wish to hold some back for upgrade or for in game actions.
The “Master” and totem are free. So Mei Feng and her totem which is the Emberling are free the following are then purchased at base cost:

Key Word: FOUNDRY

Henchman:
Kang (*) – Cost 9

Minions:
Metal Gamin x3
Survivor x3
Rail Worker x3 (*) – Cost 15 (3×5)

Enforcers:
Forgeling * (preciously Emberling)

Neil Henry
Willie
Metal Golem (previously called Rail Golem)
Mechanized Porkchop
Sparks

You can also use models with a VERSATILE keyword from the Masters faction or Factions.

So for Mei Feng:

Ten Thunders
Dawn Serpent
Fuhatsu
The Lone Swordsman
Lust
Minako Rei
Obsidian Statue
Samurai
Shadow Effigy
Shadow Emissary
Tanuki
Ten Thunders Brother
Terracotta Warrior
Yasunori

Arcanist
Arcane Effigy
Arcane Emissary
The Captain
Envy
Mechanical Rider
Mecharachnid
Saboteur
Soulstone Miner
Steam Arachnid
Steam Arachnid Swarm

In addition for cost +1 you can add other models from the “Masters” faction.

If that seems a lot of book-keeping there is an app called Bad Things Happen available for Android and iPhone.

So my Starter box amounts to 24 Soul Stones, which means if I want to move to 50 I need to add some things to my Wish List from the items above…

So with the advent of 3rd edition the old boxes are on special currently so have purchased:

Survivors

Neil Henry

Metal Golem

Willie

So the only remaining models to complete this keyword are

Sparks

Mechanised Porkchop

Which are available in the Bayou engineering M3E pack which also comes with 3 more Survivors which I don’t need!!
