About the Project

I wanted to improve my NMM so I painted the Aries Knight from Kingdom Death.

I bought this figure a while ago. As is the way with Kingdom Death their resins are often a limited run and need to be bought quickly. For once I got in on time and picked up this knight.

The detail and casting was excellent. Some parts of the cape need filling on their joins.

I was a little unsure on the posing but as the project went on I came to like it.

The figure is tall. Much larger than a typical 28mm.

The Base

I kept the base simple. I rolled a brown stuff marble floor. It’s not perfect but I find base rolled efforts rarely are. It’s good enough.

I coloured it a light grey and painted in yellow, blues and reds on different areas. Then finally I glazed over gradually reducing portions of it with a dark blue to show a progressive gloom.

Painting the Cape

I wanted to try and add some texture to the cape and started by using a dark red basecoat-Scale Color Deep Red. Then I added marks using Scale Color Birch on raised areas and anywhere that would appear to fray. After this I’d go over the marks with Blood Angels Red to blend them in.

I repeated this approach several times but I wasn’t happy with the result. Second time round I tried using marks again but this time with Mars Orange and Birch again. After this I glazed a little with more watered down Blood Angels Red.

I found a tutorial that explained the process. I’ll link to it here:

I used three blues for the armour progression, all Scale Colour: Deep Blue, Mediterranean Blue and Sky Blue. Final highlights made with white. In between I’d glaze using thinned Deep Blue.

Painting the Gold Areas

I followed Scale Colours guide to painting the gold NMM. This involved layering from brown to yellow up to whitish tips. Colours used, all Scale colour: Gobi Brown, Sahara Yellow, Tenere Yellow and White Sands.

The colour appeared a light gold to me. Other examples of gold NMM appear a saturated yellow to me. I resisted the temptation to glaze a yellow and stuck with the lighter look. I think it went better with the black armour.

It’s all done. I took a bit more time than I normally do with this miniature and I’m happy with the result. Back to more army painting now.
