Osprey Take Us Back to the Days of Medieval Warfare in Lion Rampant

Osprey Publishing have currently got a new set of wargame rules up for pre-order. It's time for us to have some fun storming the castle as we recreate medieval warfare in Lion Rampant.
Lion Rampant brings us the rules for skirmish level gaming in a period of history from which some of the most iconic figures of the past emerged. William Wallace, Robin Hood, Richard the Lion Heart, all figures who we can now bring to the table for some small scale combat.
Usually, medieval gaming seems to focus upon the larger battles that took place in this time, so it is good to see something which will allow gamers to start building a collection of minis suitable for the time, without the pressure of having to assemble a full army. The book is currently up for pre-order and should be getting released in about three months time, at which point we can all indulge in some historical slaughter.

I have heard mixed reviews of this from various sites who have been playtesting
Osprey rules are generally cheap as rules sets go. It’s certainly something that would interest me so I will keep my eyes and ears open.
Fro a guy who likes hundreds, nay, thousands of figures on the board at one time, ‘skirmish’ is a dirty word lol.
Too much painting involved and too much money required

Money has already been foolishly spent: some figures painted, others stacked in piles around my work table, like pillars of misguided ambition. Just looking for a way to justify all of it 😉

I have to agree with you on this. I play a mixed bag of skirmish games from Saga to Infinity simply because I really don’t’ have the time or can justify the expense of playing the big armies. Skirmish games allow me to have fun dabbling in several systems without massive commitment. I like painting minis, however the effort required to paint several hundred medieval knights with full heraldry would turn a hobby into OCD. I do admire the people who have the time and discipline to do it.
Ooh a man after my own heart, I love my large scale wargames. However I really like the Osprey wargames, they are fun for quick games or you can ‘borrow’ bits from the rules and put them into your games. I will be getting this when it comes out.
Actually, while I like the large armies, the big thing with Skirmish games is that they are far easier to have fully painted forces without a month or so of painting and you need less terrain. It also means that you can focus more on the details of the minis, less need for generic blending of appearance to make them fit together. Then you also, normally, then have a small section of your large force that can work for a second game…and is also normally easy to transport with you on the go. This sounds good to me. After playing some WW2 skirmish games and enjoying the fun that can be had with a few miniatures, a skirmish sized medieval game sounds just up my street
