@phaidknott you bring up something that I have been musing.  The complexity and ability to balance a game is partly determined by the variability in your factions and units.

I may be wrong in this, but from my limited experience, a Norman, a Viking, a Saxon are usually very similar in a rules system and fight in a similar way.  Take a fantasy game, a Dwarf, Elf and Goblin… these have to be very different different Dwarfs will be slow, hard to kill, Elves fast, skillful but squishy and Gobbos, numerous, squishy and generally crap.  As a human is generally very similar, it is easier to balance.  I’m perhaps making this too simple.
