DreadBall Season 2 Project Kicks Off Soon From Mantic Games

Mantic Games have set the wheels in motion for DreadBall Season 2 to appear on the horizon and indeed your tabletops in the near future
So what's going to be new within this update of the game?
- Enhanced Game Play – Faster to play, simpler to learn and easier to collect, the new edition will streamline 6 seasons worth of rules, FAQ and errata without losing any of the soul of original DreadBall.
- A New League System – built from the ground up, offering unprecedented options for team building
- Improvements based on your feedback – Reworking Jacks, Giants and MVPs to become central to the game are high on our priority list!
- Balanced Teams – each team will have a unique play-style and will be fairly balanced for competitive gaming.
- And more!
Which all sounds very good to us. As well as that there's good news on the way for people wanting to get into DreadBall as they have plans on another Core Game Set.
"DreadBall 2nd Edition will be spearheaded by a new 2nd Edition core game, which will include the new rulebook, an up-sized pitch and two new teams. The tooling and production will be funded on a simple, short Kickstarter in July, which also builds awareness of its retail launch in 2017. You’ll get updated rules for every team and Dreadball Ultimate will also get the 2nd edition treatment."
A Kickstarter in July means we could see some very interesting optional extras too coming our way. Mantic have always been pretty spot on with their fundraisers.
All of the existing teams will still remain playable which is a good sign and you'll simply have updated tweaks to their rules allowing you to use them in the new edition.
Twin that with the fact that DreadBall Xtreme will remain as is as you still have plenty of cool ways to play DreadBall.

Had sworn off KS for a while, but will look in on this as I like the game.
Why is that? I am new kick start backed my first one recently I am genuinely interested.
It’s so easy to spend too much!
So besides impulse control? Is there anything I should be worried about?
There’s only three things you should be worried about :
(1) only invest money you can afford to lose, because Kickstarter & co is not a webshop
(2) don’t worry too much about delays (they will happen)
(3) don’t forget about the project once you’ve invested

Really? Not if you read the kick starter comments, or their own forums. Then you see the rules get rushed, lots of late or compleletly missing deliveries, and loads of missing parts. Almost like they are just milking kickstater with empty promises. Mantic need to grow the company and stop with kickstarters before they annoy everyone in their target audience.
Lots ? Isn’t that exaggerating things a bit too much ? Are we going to hear about this for all eternity regardless of how their new kickstarter(s) are doing ? Compared to the horror stories about projects failing or people getting scammed there have been far riskier companies to back. Yes, they’re not perfect. However they did say that they’ve learned a few things from the Dungeon Saga issues (like keeping their project simple). And all things considered it is more like an investment than a webshop. Well their last two fulfilled kickstarters were a mess. Dungeon Saga was clearly rushed to get it out the door for christmas, a rulebook full of errors, an incomplete rule systems, mysteriously absent content, abysmal quality control over its shipping process, and to top it all off horrendous communication from Mantic, especially concerning the problems with the kickstarter. Hell, some people are still waiting for their pledge to turn up over half a year after shipping supposedly started. After the Deadzone kickstarter I won’t give Mantic a penny – quality control is near non-existent and customer service is poor.
A shame as they have a lot of good ideas but until I see them getting on top of that, I will spend my hobby money with companies that do deserve my custom.
I love that one of their big selling points at the top of the page is balanced teams. I guess nobody bother to try that the first time out. Mantic is a joke. Play Guild Ball if you want a great sports game all.
I’ve had nothing but good experiences with Mantic. Any issues have been dealt with quickly and well.
I’m pleased to see this Kickstarter (although I hope they also release the new rules for free for those that don’t back it) as I do think some aspects of the game need tweaking. A recent league we’ve been playing has been somewhat ruined by rather OP Nameless side(s). We were just discussing that, if playing a league in the future, we may ban Nameless. Therefore the above announcement is very welcome.
I’m the same. I’ve been nothing but thrilled with mantic for some time now. I’m not completely unaware that issues have occurred with some people but their latest offering, Deadzone v2 is absolutely brill. The rules are excellent, the minis are ok and the terrain is fantastic. It was a much simpler kickstarter though, which seems to mean they have learned from previous mistakes where they seem to have overstretched themselves. Yes I’ve just received another well packed KS package. Out of 7 shipments, only one was missing items, and these were received in due course after going through the missing items process.
Kickstarter is the greatest marketing tool they have available for this kind of game launch, it helps draw more people to the game, the backers get to offer feedback as the project progresses and its less of a financial risk to Mantic.
I have yet to hear from anyone who backed a Mantic KS who DIDN’T get their pledge. Sometimes bits are missing, etc, but they always sort it out in the end.
I’m an original Deadzone backer and I’m STILL, years later, getting free updates to the game. They treat their backers well. I wish all KS companies could make the same claim.
The free rules was a nice gesture, the mass of poor quality tat that was the product even after replacement of faulty parts was not.
To be clear, they are not a terrible company, you will get your pledge that I don’t doubt, it the issues and quality of product that I questions.
Ive found most Mantic Kickstarters a good experiance, everything arrived and any errors were fixed

As a Mantic backer and a ‘Dust’ backer, you’ll be fine with Mantic…..
I’ll be getting into that, for the new ruleset and maybe the new teams. I haven’t had much issues with Mantic kickstarters in the past. One had missing items wich were quickly replaced and i got extra stuff to compensate for that! Some were a bit late in shipping but, all in all, fine.
I recently purchased one of the bigger packages for the new deadzone and the minis are nice, the terrain is amazing, and I look forward to seeing if I can find room in my heart (and budget) for dread ball
I wonder GW are evil enough to release of Blood Bowl around the same time as this kickstarter …
Granted, the gameplay is different.
And the old GW certainly wasn’t brilliant at marketing their product.
They definitely have got to be aware that they’re competing for the same type of gamer.
I’m possibly in the minority here, but there’s no competition IMO. Dreadball does what Blood Bowl does but in a fraction of the time with a fraction of the annoyance. It needs this refresh. Balance is the big issue (our league have agreed not to use some of the more powerful teams but it’s still not perfect) but I’m interested to see what else they change. @limburger they are two very different games in my view, I like how Dreadball plays and I think its a little bit of a dis-service to just see it as a bloodbowl clone. It does have some of the same issues with campaigns. It is however hockey compared to American Football, a very different game and experience.
I agree they are competing for the same gamer, to those people I’d say give Guildball a try <<)
I’m aware that there’s differences, but to outsiders those might not be that apparent.
Especially if one of those games has the theme that’s easily recognised and a (potential) marketing budget that could easily dwarf that of Mantic. They even have the option of using their pc game as an additonal opportunity for attracting a new audience.
Guildball at least has a dramatic different setup (smaller teams) so it isn’t as easily compared. Despite all of that there will be comparisons to the 500 pound gorilla in the room that is GW’s Bloodbowl.
If they go with the new PVC they used in Deadzone 2 there should be some cool sci fi models coming from this.
I’ll have a look at it when the Kickstarter is running. Given the number of games I play (very few) I’m not sure I have any good reason to buy into an updated ruleset. But I still like to collect and paint the teams.
6 x 4 & green would have had me thinking of indulging.

I.m still waiting on a DBX Frenzy Wave 3 shipment atm. Sometimes its a bit of a struggle to deal with the Customer Service (however they have recently replaced the chap who was there when thing went a bit wonky a couple of years ago, and with whom I had the problems with). However I would say that I actually prefer the one piece season 4 to 6 teams to a hard plastic option. They were very clean castings (unlike the season 1-3 minis), and very well sculpted. I have everything for Dreadball and have run several leagues. I’m curious to see what they’re doing with a second edition. Not sure if they’ll get more money from me this time though. It would be nice if previous backers get a rule update like we did for Deadzone.
im guessing this is mainly to redo the models? mantic have said that restic aint that great a material, so maybe redo the teams in metal/resin/plastic?
I kinda wish Mantic would do away with the kickstarter format and try focusing on their relationships with FLGS. It’s great to back a kickstarter and get your stuff, but when none of your local game stores carry Mantic products, it’s hard to find opponents.
Also, being a backer of 3 Mantic kickstarters, I think Mantic really needs to improve their communication with their backers especially when products get changed or pledges go missing. I think they would avoid a lot of flak if they would keep backers in the loop and not act oblivious to problems.
DreadBall is a fine game that can do with some updating. I’m looking forward to playing a 3 game series with my pal in the next few weeks. BUT: I cannot reccomend doing a Mantic Kickstarter after the balls-up that was (still is) the Dungeon Saga campaign. There are still some items (game books) that are being vaguely promised for this year in digital that were supposed to be printed last August. I will be waiting for 2nd edition DB to arrive in the shops.
I am looking forward to this. Any idea if the refining of rules puts all the previous “Season books” and Dreadball Extreme in one place?
Hmm… A while back, Mantic said that they would only do kickstarters for new games. Once a game is out and established, then no kickstarters for that game, just straight releases. I thought Dreadball would be established by now…
I don’t see why this needs to be yet another one of Mantic’s Kickstarters. I am mostly okay with a second edition rule book as an idea to clean up the rules and get 6 seasons worth of ideas in one book, but the game had nearly 30 teams and like double that in what should be called ringers but incorrectly called MVPs. Does it really need two more teams to make the excuse for another Kickstarter mini or otherwise?
i’ve never felt anything but pleased from my dealings with mantic in kickstarter, plus Dreadball is a fantastic game with tons of variety and strategy built in, i’ll be very happy to see whats offered to veteran players.
Problem Mantic has is as a small company they need to grow and KS is a good way to do that but as with such a medium issues happen. Its a double edged sword, you get funding for that new project but at the same time you get the added complexity if the project goes nuts and becomes to unwieldy with to many backers for a small company What one feels is Mantic’s saving grace is the fact that they are actively trying to improve areas they have admitted are an issue and be public about it.
