About the Project

Since I bounce around on what I am painting, I am just opening a project to post what I am working on now.

This Project is Active

March Crisis Protocol Releases and a couple of Starter Box models.

Every third weekend of the month, I have a Crisis Protocol game, so it inspires me to get something new painted for it.  Earlier in January I had completed the entire set of playable characters for the game, but with the early February releases and now the March releases that statement was no longer true.  Now I am caught back up again.

With both my Shatterpoint and Crisis Protocol minis, I try to paint some terrain too, or it will never get painted.  Especially Crisis Protocol where terrain is an integral part of the game.  So, this time I pulled some of the items I have not painted from the second starter set.

Finally, the ongoing saga of my experimentation with oil washing.  Talking to one of my friends he said, I should use mineral spirits and not linseed oil to thin the oil, or it will take forever to cure.  Almost two weeks later it is getting close to the point I can work on cleaning it up.  So while what I did was not a disaster….don’t use linseed oil.  Here is the current picture.

Fistful of Credits and We Are Brave squad packsFistful of Credits and We Are Brave squad packs

We start with the two squad packs, nothing really special here.  I did mess around with wet blending on the Queen’s attendants.  It is nice painting a full Starwars job, without a single light saber or any storm troopers.

With both my Shatterpoint and Marvel Crisis Protocol paint groups I try to paint some terrain with them.  So after 40 or so years of not using oil paints, I decided to try to use some oil washes.

More Shatterpoint

The bridge is done with a primer of The Army Painter Gun Metal and then a oil wash mixed with linseed oil and black paint.  While the base is done with Two Thin Coats Sir Coats Silver and The Army Painter Dark Wash.  Unfortunately, as of 5 days later the oil paint has not dried enough for me to complete the paint job.  I went a little heavy with the oil and it is taking it a long time to dry up.  I do have a couple of comparison photos below, but the bridges are not complete yet.  Hopefully, I’ll be able to add them in my next update.

Finally, I decided to make this my 2024 painting blog, so to keep count.

All three boxesAll three boxes

Thanks to the Unofficial Hobby Hangout, for things people may want to know.  First the paints I use, standard colors my current range is 2 Thin Coats, except for two sets.  I have the skin tones paint set and the metallics paint set from The Army Painter.  Contrast paints/quick paints in general are Games Workshop’s, but I do sometimes use The Army Painters.  Finally, Airbrush paints are from Miniatare.’

Since I currently regularly play Crisis Protocol and Shatterpoint you will probably see a lot of them in this blog.

Black Panther and Killmonger on their scenic base.Black Panther and Killmonger on their scenic base.

One of the things I do not like about The Army Painter’s skin tones set, is the washes are very shiny.  I have not had a chance to clear coat these models and if you look closely at Killmonger’s hands and neck you should see the light reflecting off them.  On bigger models it will even shine through matt clear coat.

Black Panther is done in a deep purple too, instead of black.  I find that adds a little more interest to the model than a regular black and grey look.

Finally, the terrain that came in the Wakanda boxes.  I said to myself, “Myself, you know what would make this easier?  Prime it all in Fur Brown!”  You know what color I ended up never using?  Fur Brown, how did you guess?  Actually, I did try to use Fur Brown, but The Army Painter Fur Brown and Two Thin Coats Fur Brown are nowhere close to each other.  So, I ended up rebase-coating everything and you see the results below.

I also had no idea what to do with the Vibranium carrier, so I got out my airbrush and did a variation on the box cover art.

Two Shatter Point crews. Two Shatter Point crews.

I was building out some of my Star Wars Shatterpoint miniatures and got half of the four crews I had on my painting table done.  Starting with the Witches of Dathomir, these I could not wait to paint.  They were an interesting color, and I couldn’t wait to do the green fire effect.  So without further ado, here they are.

The second crew I was less excited about was Mace Windu and his crew.  It’s just another jedi in brown robes with more Stormtroopers.  Yes I know these are not stormtroopers but all the same.  These especially are just as bad as the rest, since unlike other Arc Troopers that have a splash of color, these don’t.  I mean I don’t have a shelf of nothing but Stormtroopers waiting to paint, or have already painted a million of them, below I have posted a list of painted Stormtroopers going all the way back to the 80s.  It might be the 90s, I don’t remember when West End Games were making Star Wars miniatures.

Celestial GigasCelestial Gigas

To start this project I have added the Celestial Gigas from Middara.

These are from the Kickstarter extras for the game.  We have been playing for almost two years now.  I have painted the game over that time.  Here is the full Act One miniatures.

For those of you who are not familiar with Middara, it is a Hero Quest clone which you play your way through a choose your own adventure style of narrative.  The art style/game feel is Magical Girl Anime.  Currently only Act 1 is available, and it has taken us almost two years of playing every other week to be close to completing it.

Act 2 and Act 3 are still in development and awaiting Kickstarter fulfillment.

If you like Hero Quest/Descent/All the Warhammer dungeon delvers you’ll probably like this one too.
