Welcome aboard, and great job! You are a very talented painter. You remind me of Bob Ross. “Happy little trees…”
I was going to say: “Happy little termies” 😀
Yeah men, great video there Romain, thanks a lot
I really like the red wash you made for the gold. What water:paint ratio did you use for the mix?
The paint-water mix should be at that point where it lets you see your palette in transparency… I’d say it’s about 60% water, or maybe 70% water, tops… ish. I’ve never measured it precisely… Since I only use one or two coats of it (this is simple painting… It takes only a few hours… The more coats you do, the better the end result, but the more time you spend…), it still needs to have quite a lot of paint in it compared to a glaze. It’s definitely thinner than a GW wash, though, so that the pigments really travel… Read more »
One of these days, I’ll show you how I did the eyes (a simple prussian blue wash) and how I did the edges of the blades in ivory so that the blades looked neat instead of crappy…
These were the bits that were edited out of the video, but it’s very very simple to do, and you can see the result in the 360° view, so it’s all right !
Thanks everyone for the nice comments,
BoW Romain
absolutely fantastic tutorial and gorgeous scheme, shall definately be boring that one!!
Great delivery of the tutorial on your part Romain…..pity about the editing out crucial steps…..tut tut BoW 😛
Look forward to watching alot more of your work!!
Amazing videos, Romain. Interesting techniques too. Might try that primer trick sometime, see if I can pull it off.
And I wouldn’t call those traffic lights on his back, I’d call them turn signals. Turn Signals on a Terminator.

The best 3 color every made for BoW.
Indeed has been made by a Frenchman. 😀
Like the way Romain paints. Professionally, as I try.
That was totally amazing great tute and you didn’t need to use heaps of paints either hope to see more in the future
It’s cool. And you did a very good job man! Glad to see the bar being raised. I am not a fan of the techniques personally but that’s from one painter to another 🙂
Hope you enjoy working with those nutters!
John.
Haha Jon i thought you wouldn’t be a fan… 😛
Btw Romain it was a great tutorial… i want a Romain!
And i wonder why Justin edited out soem of the painting parts… hmm… are you sure you and Justin aren’t long lost brothers… because you look alike.
Yes, I thought so… Very different techniques, indeed. I saw some of your work at the studio, and I must say what you did with pigments is amazing !
I know I couldn’t paint a tank that well.
I do enjoy working with those nutters… And I hope to meet you at some point !
BoW Romain
HAHA! Man it will be a pleasure to meet you sometime 🙂 I am sure I can learn a lot off you if we both get a chance to sit down!
Amazing work, look forwad to your next painting tutorial!!
I rly liked this tutorial hope to see more of romain very calm and relaxing voice to listen to imo.
I like the effect but wouldn’tit be better if you time-lapsed the vid just like Les from awesome paintjob does? It would be much easier to watch it if it wasn’t over an hour long.
Good things take time…
Believe me, Justin timelapsed and cut in all the right places… And a good thing he did, too !
BoW Romain
I know that it takes time. And your time was well spent. It’s just my personal preference, which is a result of lack of time:). Or maybe it’s because I’m an ork player used to paining lots of miniatures at one time? I dunno. I justlike Les’ style better. Which doesn’t mean your vid was not informative or entertaining. Thumbs up anyways 🙂
Les is very good indeed… And he’s way better at painting sci-fi miniatures, especially the 40k ones. Les has an airbrush though, and that changes everything. I’m more of a Fantasy painter, I like subdued tones and a somewhat realistic palette, I have to force myself to use vivid colors. If I may add something, this is the first Marine I’ve painted in a loooong while… And this was my first video… And I wasn’t sure of the structure it would have once edited… Next time, I’ll be sure to do clear steps, you’ll be able to skip or fast-forward… Read more »
True. I actually favorited some vids on youtube which i find momst informative and go back and watch them to clear things up or to remind me how to use this or that technique. It’s a really great way of learning
I just wanted to say that i tried the power sword method today and it worked pretty good tho i used greens instead of blue came out pretty nice 🙂
Good for you ! I’ve had good results with purple as well, but red is a little trickier to do.
BoW Romain
All I have to say this was the most intresting 3 colours up, intermediate with lots on intresting techniques looking forward to more.
Very nice! One thing I’d like to see more of on painting tutorial videos is a short montage at the end showing the finished mini from close up and a few angles (I know you tried to show it in your hand at the end).
a fantasy painter :O:O:O:O AMAZING!! cant wait to see more fantasy stuff there just isnt enough of it around!! lets be honest…painted one space marine…painted them all 😉 haha
How very true…
BoW Romain
A very informative tutorial, showing a number of very useful painting techniques – it’s virtually a 3-D painting. Many thanks!! The Grey Knight’s armour seemed almost to glow when finished.
Just want to say that I created an account to say thanks for the tutorial. I got a lot of good ideas from this. I’m doing my GK in a black metal look and the undercoating ideas should work great going black / dark grey / boltgun with the sprays, plus the palette is brilliant!
nice job love the swords
