Great part 4, you really let loose in this one. Bleeping funny, Romain. I had a quick question for you, why is boltgun metal (or darker steel color) used to basecoat of metallic gold? Wouldn’t that throw off the color of the gold? I always wondered and thought you’d be a person would could explain. Thanks!!
One other thing, what’s the color you mix with the gold before adding the wash? It looks very nice.
I didn’t mix anything with the gold before applying it… Just water. What did you think it was ?

I did no such thing in the tutorial… I basecoated iron/steel with Boltgun Metal, and gold with Glorious Gold. I did give steel a wash of brownish color to harmonize it a bit, and to put in some rust and dust and grime, but that’s it.
That said, for a “dirty” gold, or simply a yellowish metal look, you can indeed basecoat with a steely color, preferably mixed with grey or dirty yellow to diminish the metallic shine… Then you brush or highlight with more golden hues.

The colour gradient on the dread is really outstandingly good. Shame I could never muster the patience to paint my minis with thin layers like that. But its great to be shown how it is done. Great job and really instructive to watch. Looking forward to the next instalment!
Really like the look of the glorious gold with the royal navy brown wash. I will definitely be using that combo.
Loving the painting installments, as they help inspire me when I need a bit of encouragement. Keep up the good work! I can’t wait to see this Dreadnaught finished.
